Exclamation CONCACAF Gold Cup 2009

Competition starts next week I think.

Canada plays Jamaica July 3rd, the game will be on Sportsnet.
Canada plays El Salvador July 7th.
Canada plays Costa Rica July 10th.

Here's the Canada roster:

1- G- Greg Sutton
2- D- Adrian Cann
3- D/M- Mike Klukowski
4- D- André Hainault
6- M- Julian de Guzman
5- D/F- Kevin McKenna
7- D/M- Paul Stalteri
8- M- Marcel de Jong
9- F- Ali Gerba
10- M/F- Willi Johnson
11- D- Richard Hastings
12- M- Issey Nakajima-Farran
13- M- Atiba Hutchinson
14- D- Dejan Jakovic
15- M/F- Josh Simpson
16- F- Simeon Jackson
17- D/M- Jaime Peters
18- G- Joshua Wagenaar
19- D/M- Kevin Harmse
20- M- Patrice Bernier
21- M- Chris Pozniak
22- G- Kenny Stamatopoulos
23- F- Charles Gbeke

Head Coach: Stephen Hart
Assistant Coach: Tony Fonseca
Goalkeeper coach: Paul Dolan
Manager: Morgan Quarry
Video Coordinator: Vic Mendes
Physiotherapist: Ted Tilbury
Equipment Manager: Mike Moretto
Head of delegation: Victor Montagliani

I'm looking forward to seeing what the youngest members of the squad bring and how well they gel with the key regulars, specifically JDG & Attiba.

Prediction: Canada goes 1-1-1 and makes the quarterfinals.
If you could... Would You?

<offtopic>
Harmse was traded to Chivas USA yesterday/today from TFC

Gerba was recently signed by TFC

Sutton was recently cut from TFC

Gbeke is not MNT quality from what I have seen (and heard).

Regs, With no Rob Friend Gbeke is next best "Big Man" that can hold the ball up if Hart decides he needs a target man, I can only assume that is why he was included.

He has been more consistent so far this season than Haber (who also could have been called upon to be a Target Man) with the Caps.

Simeon Jackson is the guy to watch for Canada up front as Gbeke has been rotting on the pine since his crap with Charles at the Miami game. Gerba has been accumulating rust etc.

Although he is playing in the 3rd tier of the English Pyramid with Gillingham, Jackson just scores goals. he had 42 in 93 Appearances for Rushden and Diamonds, and now has 21 in 59 for Gillingham, and has 1 in his lone Cap for Canada. What is also cool about this lad is he was born in Jamaica and we have capped someone who might have played elsewhere, and I might suggest we'll see Hart starting him against Jamaica.

And forget about guys gelling with JDG and Atiba, those guys need to learn to gel with each other first

My Lineup would look like this if I'm Hart since the last Gold Cup was somewhat successful with the old 4-1-4-1

------------------Jackson or Gerba-------------------
Nakajima-Farran-----JDG-------Atiba-----------Bernier
--------------------Harmse or DeJong----------------
Klukowski---------McKenna--Hainault----------Stalteri
-------------------------Sutton---------------------

Which Keeper?

They have 4 now in
Begovic (Not with squad, and probably the most talented)
Sutton (Who is now unattached and played vs the Whitecaps June 2nd in the 2-0 Loss)
Stamatopoulos (Who has 5 caps, with the last in 06. Plays in Norway I think.)
Wagenaar (23 apps for Yeovil Town in CC League 1 last year)

Sutton has the Number 1 shirt according to the above team list, so I'd suppose he is starting, although I'd probably think we might see Wagenaar too.

Dani Fernandes is still the best keeper that qualifies to Cap with us as he has only played one Exhibition game against a Middle Eastern team (not an A Friendly or cap call) and a 20 min sub app in another non-counting game.

He can still switch and appears to have fallen from the #2 spot behind Beto for Portugal to the number 3 or 4 spot behind Morerria at least.

Yes he is.
That being said...

That last game was a tough one for him though, he couldn't be faulted on either of Toure's goals, except that he maybe could have flipped the ball over the net on Wes Knight's shot that he parried onto the foot of an Unmarked Toure, but that would have been hard to do as Knights shot was close(ish) range and a laser.

maybe this thing is up for Wagenaar to get his hands on. From what I have read he has done well since being dropped in to Yeovil's setup since the departure of Begovic...

Their Midfield and Backline should stack up pretty well to USA and Mexico at this tourney based soley on the fact that they will be bringing B Sides.

It does hurt not having David Edgar, DeRosario, Serioux, Brennan, and others though. It's too bad "The FC's" Canadian's are going club over country, but that is what you'd expect when this little Gold Cup tourney is played every two years and not four like the rest of the Federations... Jack Warner's little fundraiser

But Canada needs more games and tourney's so this is good for Canada, and Brennan & DeRosario will most likely not be involved come the next WCQ so it is a good thing to get youngins out there and playing, although deRo is the face of Canadian Football as long as Julian DeGuzman is abroad for club and Jono DeGuzman is waiting for the Netherlands (which will never come imho, unless it is Olympics only (which don't count as full caps, or just gets capped tied to deepen their player pool))

The Rosters for El Salvador and Costa Roca are fairly generic... No big names, No Big Clubs, and far less of their guys are playing MLS or Abroad, which sometimes means not as talented, but have better chemistry (And Diving Skills)

El Salvador has one player playing outside of their domestic league: Alfredo Pacheco plays for New York Redbulls.

Costa Rica has 1 player in MLS, 7 in Europe, and 1 in China of the group not playing in their Domestic League.

One more in my chain of posts on the topic

Surprise Surprise.

tentatively the Gold Cup game is only scheduled to be shown @ 8pm Local time on Sportsnet West and Ontario, not on Pacific or HD as there are more important things on like:
-Darts
-Primetime with Bob MCCown
-Poker after dark
-Mariners vs BoSox
-Jays vs Yankess

FFS.
