Default The CFL 2006

The season kicks off tonight in the shadow of the WC. I haven't heard much, if anything about the Lions/Roughriders game tonight. It could be a good one.

Reccos? You heading to this?

Discussion for the CFL season(all games and teams)can take place here.

Lions! Woooooooooooo. Power! Wooooooooooooo.

Yes, went to the game. Not a huge crowd - 27,000 but that is expected at this time of year. Toronto June 30 will be a good house with Ricky Williams.

Dickenson was incredible spreading the ball around.
Clearly the off season tweaking of the offence has reduced last year's painfully slow developing crossing patterns and massive numbers of QB sacks that came from every team blitzing the crap out of them.

The Lions did stretch them laterally at times including a five yard crossing pattern to Tony Simmons that he took 70 yards by exploding down the sidelines like an Olympic sprinter.

The good thing about this year's offence is the quicker developing passing patterns that allow Dickenson a faster release and less looking from sideline to sideline which is too slow and gets him killed. This guy from the shotgun reads defences better than anyone and with more patterns downfield he was brilliant. The downfield attack opened up the crossing patterns where last year that was done to try open up the middle and longer pass plays.

The new O line guys look pretty good. The run sucked but it may have been that with the game out of reach by half time (the way Sask played) they decided not to show more of their play book than they had to.

Jarius Jackson played like a nervous and skittish rookie for the whole fourth and it was his two and outs that led to late Sask scores. They have some stuff for this big QB that I saw at their training camp scrimmage that would have better served him last night but I suspect they chose to not use it as the game was over at half time.

The defence looks pretty solid and improved. Not sure if Javy Glatt the UBC guy is better than the import Jamal Johnson at MLB based on last night. The new DL Aaron Hunt looked great. Far better than his brother's Reggy's def side.

This is a good team that should play some exciting ball this season.

CFL BROADBAND

http://www4.insinc.com/cfl/

If you are a die-hard and are looking to watch a Lions home game that is 'blacked out', here is an option for you.

The 'super player' feed is awesome as long as you have the bandwidth and is pretty much the same as watching the game on TV if you go full screen.

If you have friends out of the country who are looking for CFL games, let them know as well!

Cheers,

~Regs.

If there ever was an argument for getting rid of the single point, it happend yesterday.

What the heck was Buono thinking? Pierce just marched them down the field for a game tying TD, why not give him a chance to get close enough for a field goal? Kicking the ball(at least trying to)through the endzone is gay.

I'd consider firing Buono for such a stupid move.

I agree that it was a boneheaded move for Wally not to at least move a little closer...but...a loss will make them more fired up to run into the off season!!!

Default Grey Cup Champs

Great Game today, it was easily the best football game on today!! The Lions played great and the lead and win was never in doubt, Dickson was the MVP which I think should have gone to the kicker. The play of the game was Jackson's diving catch....brillant!

Finally a Grey Cup Game worth watching!

Eh, did you see San Diego/Denver? I know I didn't. However a 35 - 27 game.....with someone as good a L.T.......must have been a better game...

I didn't even realize there was a CFL game on today.

By half-time, I couldn't stop thinking about that CFL commerical from a few years back: "Boo hoo. We are French. We are diff-raunt."

If anyone can find a video of that on-line somewhere, that'd be great. I haven't been able to so far.

It was a good game - interesting throughout - and definitely not a thriller. Last year was a better offensive display but then again BC Place was a lot warmer than outdoors at Winterpeg.

Dickinson put them consistently in decent positions to score McCallum's record 6 FGs and the Lions defence was terrific.

Two plays that might have made this a different finish and added more excitement, were the Dickinson fumble whistled down too soon (Als would have scored a TD easily on that one) and the goal line stance where they knocked the ball loose from Robert Edwards.

That was the best Lions defence in years. The offence went a little cold as the game went on, but Montreal's defence played great too. Dickinson and Joe Smith's running in the game gave BC a big edge. Montreal had too many 2 and outs.

As is often the case with the offensive play calling, the Lions emptied their play book in the first half and used every formation they have only to go conservative in the second half as far as passing went. In the first half the Lions used double tight ends, hitch screen throwback, sprint draw, swing screen in the backfield as well every possible passing formation in their arsenal. Second half, too risk adverse.

To give Montreal credit though, in the second half they changed up their blitzes which BC picked up easily in the first with Geroy Simon, Clermont, Smith and Jackson all taking a turn at blocking the inside DB blitzing down the middle. Instead of halfback blitzes in the 2nd half the Als sent their LBs plus delayed blitzes keying on what the RB did.

The Lions defence got bit conservative in the 2nd half and seemed to be playing a lot more zone with two safetys and less blitzing - just to prevent the Calvillo bomb or his favourite throws to the back side. It worked.

I have to disagree with that, though at first glance it seems right. Depending on the angle of the replay, you can actually see Jason Clermont being the closest player to the ball, but as soon as the whistle blows, he stops, Dickenson doesn't even try to get the ball back, and Montreal waltzes in and picks up the ball. The fact that the ball actually went to Montreal is bogus. How can you award someone a turnover after the play has been blown down? If the whistle didn't blow would Clermont have been able to scoop it up? (I say he would have) Once the whistle blows the play is over. It's unfair to call it a fumble when one team stops because the whistle has blown, the other gets the ball uncontested and then wins a challenge. Other than that you're spot on about the game

You may be right that someone from the Lions would have got the guy - not sure. This article at cfl.ca by the head of officiating spells out the rule on this. It is no different in the NFL. Seed the second part of the article.

CFL.ca

Question: In a few games recently I have noticed that the Jumbotron is showing replays when a coach's challenge flag was thrown. Is this legal?

Answer: All teams have in stadium video boards and use them to show replay to fans at the game.

The only stipulation related to Instant Replay Reviews is that the video board cannot show replays AFTER the Referee has made the announcement of a team's challenge.

They may resume showing replays after the Referee's announcement on the result of the challenge.

The same situation exists for a booth initiated review (in the last three minutes of the second half or overtime).

Once the announcement is made the video board replays must stop.

Question: There have been a few fumbles lately with officials blowing their whistles to stop the play and declaring the ball carrier down.

Then, in spite of the whistle, the play gets reviewed and the ball has been turned over to the other team.

How can you do that when there is a whistle on the play?

Answer: In the rules governing Instant Replay, there are provisions to use replay to review two kinds of plays, often referred to as "down by contact".

There are actually two approved rulings:

- one for a play when a ball carrier going down, fumbles the ball, and the play is allowed to continue to its termination.

- another for a play when a ball carrier is ruled down and officials think he fumbled after he was down.

Here are the two Approved Rulings from the Replay Manual

A.R. Runner down by contact

First and 10 on A20. A # 2 takes a handoff and runs to the A25 yd line where B # 22 contacts him.

A # 2 stumbles but does not appear to have gone down and officials allow the play to continue.

Replay shows A # 2’s left knee hit the ground at the A 25-yard line.

RULING: Reviewable play. A # 2 ruled down by contact and A ball second and 5 at the A25 yd line.

A.R. Fumble before runner down by contact

Team A ball carrier fumbles the ball with Team B recovering.

Officials rule down by contact at A's 30 yard line.

Replay shows that the ball was loose before the runner was down.

RULING: Reviewable play. B’s ball at point of recovery with no advance.

Here's the question i really want to know.

How come the lions kicked off in both the first and second halfs to start.

Montreal deferred and still got the ball in the first half. did anyone else notice this as i was thoroughly confused along with everyone at my buddy's where i watched it.

Its because BC choose the side to defend which gave Montreal the ball in the first and second as BC could have taken the ball in the first but decided to give it away.

The whistle thing still bothers me, it almost says hit people after the whistle just in case. For example, receiver catches ball, gets hit and drops it. Ruling would be an incomplete pass. A player on defense picks up the ball just in case and gets creamed by someone on offense after the whistle just to make sure he doesn't hold on to the ball in case the play is challenged and ruled a fumble. Very easy to get hurt, allthough it really doesn't happen often.
