Default St Pauli upsets Hertha in German Cup 3rd Round!!

Johnny Sulentic's 3rd Div St Pauli upset Bundesliga powerhouse Hertha 4:3 in extra time yesterday! Reports that i have heard, say that Johnny came into the game around the hour mark. Rumour also has it that he set up the winner. Still trying to find the articles, but here's a lil something from a hertha site. Congrats Johnny and team!!

From a Hertha Webstie:

Quote:
Third round disaster for Hertha

What a bitter defeat! Hertha was dramatically knocked out of the FA Cup at the third round stage, losing 3-4 after extra time against the third division cult side St.Pauli. What makes the defeat all the more unbearable is the fact that Hertha blew a two goal lead.

Furious start

Hertha began the game at a furious pace, undaunted by the potent atmosphere created by the capacity home crowd. The Bundesliga side combined well and made the home side look ordinary at first.

Pantelic scores first away goal

On 8 minutes Hertha was rewarded for their early dominance, as Arne Friedrich broke down the right from where he put a pinpoint cross into the area, where Marko Pantelic was lurking to open the scoring with a fine left foot shot. It was the Serb’s first goal for Hertha away from home and it gave his side the perfect start!

Gilberto doubles the lead

Hertha kept up the pressure on the home side and on the rare occasion where St.Pauli broke clear, Hertha dealt with the danger well. Pauli lost possession going forward four minutes before half time; Cairo took the ball and moved down the left wing from where he crossed to Gilberto who was standing on the left edge of the penalty area. The Brazilian met the pass on the volley and the Pauli keeper hardly even saw the ball as it flew past him and into the net. 2-0 to Hertha!

Dinzey-Mazingu pulls a goal back

St. Pauli to their credit, never gave up during any part of the game, and deservedly pulled a goal back on the stroke of half time, as the former Hertha player Michel Dinzey-Mazungu capitalised on a Friedrich mistake, much to the delight of the home crowd in the legendary Millerntor stadium in Hamburg.

Pauli fights back

After the break the home side had the wind in their sails and began to attack Hertha with more frequency, with Luz posing the greatest threat. Hertha for their part could have extended their lead, but Marcelinho missed a couple of good chances from promising positions. That lack of prowess in front of goal was to backfire on the capital city side. On 86 minutes, Dinzey-Mazungu put in a corner which was headed home by Luz, to send the home crowd into delirium. The referee blew for time and both sides got ready for extra time!

Herth takes the lead again!

On 104 minutes, Gilberto was fouled some 30 metres out from goal. Up stepped Marcelinho to crash an unstoppable shot into the net to give his side the lead again. Hertha sat back on their lead and they were to pay for that decision. Pauli refused to lie down and attacked the visitors with a vengeance. Ian joy waltzed into the Hertha area unmarked, from where he fired in a fine shot to put the third division level at 3-3.

Oh no!

Disaster struck for Hertha during the second half of extra time. A free kick from the left was nodded home by the unmarked Palikuca on 108 minutes. St. Pauli cleverly defender their lead and ran out the deserved winners, Hertha must try again next year…

Hertha line-up:

Fiedler - Fathi (110. Zecke), Madlung, Samba, Friedrich - Gilberto, Bastürk (81. Marx), Marcelinho, Cairo (74. Boateng), Kovac - Pantelic.

Goals: 0:1 (8.) Pantelic, 0:2 (41.) Gilberto, 1:2 (45.) Dinzey-Mazingu, 2:2 (86.) Luz, 2:3 (97.) Marcelinho, 3:3 (104.) Joy, 4:3 (108.) Palikuca.

Now they face Werder Bremen in the quarters but it's at home.......Celtic has a lot of fans who follow St. Pauli as there appears to be quite a tie between the clubs.......
