Third division St Pauli stun Bremen in German Cup

FRANKFURT, Jan 25 (Reuters) - Third division St Pauli produced another huge German Cup shock on Wednesday, beating Werder Bremen 3-1 to clinch a place in the semi-finals.

Florian Lechner celebrates St Pauli's famous win against Werder Bremen
Cash-strapped St Pauli, who knocked out Hertha Berlin in the last round, took an early lead on their snow-covered Millerntor pitch with a neat finish from Michel Mazingu-Dinzey.

Johan Micoud equalised for title-chasing Bremen in the 27th minute but Fabian Boll and Timo Schultz bundled in second-half goals to send St Pauli clear.

Home keeper Achim Hollerieth saved a penalty from Tim Borowski to clinch victory for St Pauli, based just off the infamous Reeperbahn in Hamburg's red-light district.

Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf was critical of the decision to let the game go ahead after heavy snow left the pitch extremely slippery.

"If you just want to have fun you can play in these conditions but if you're being serious you can't," Schaaf said. "Playing a game like this was dangerous for the players."

Arminia Bielefeld beat Kickers Offenbach 4-2 on penalties to reach the semi-finals after the match had finished 1-1 after 120 minutes.

Eintracht Frankfurt also made it safely through against another second division side, winning 3-1 away to TSV 1860 Munich.

Frankfurt fell behind to an early goal from Stefan Reisinger but Francisco Copado grabbed an equaliser in the 21st minute and further strikes from Ioannis Amanatidis and Alexander Meier sealed victory for the first division side.

Bayern Munich secured their place in the semi-finals with a 3-2 extra-time win at home to Mainz on Tuesday.

The draw for the last four will take place on Saturday.

St. Pauli 0 Bayern Munich 3

15' [0 - 1] O. Hargreaves
84' [0 - 2] C. Pizarro
89' [0 - 3] C. Pizarro

It was a good run, but it's tough beating Bayern Munich!

Good run by Johnny and team.
