Default Surprise? Crazy Greeks!

No surprise here. Watch a local Vancouver Greek League game on a Sunday. Hot tempers and tighter than average shorts make for great entertainment.

Who needs international soccer?

Pre-game conversation just before kick-off on Saturday:

"Vassili, you lost some weight?"

"Yes, lot's of shugging mun. Lot's of shugging. You should see me, one leg here, the other there, beautiful mun. I'm ablaze beby. I'm ablaze!"

"Whose leg?"

"My leg. Her leg. Who give a sheet mun? I show her who boss."

And that's what it's ultimately about with the Greeks. Who is the boss?

Crazy Greeks. Got to love them.

Greece handed FIFA suspension

Written by: Stephen Sharp
ZURICH, Jul 3 (SW) - FIFA have suspended the Greece national football team from participating in any international matches due to government interference in the Hellenic Football Federation (HFF).

World football's governing body clearly states that each individual association must be independent from their nation's governments and FIFA said in a press release that they had issued an ultimatum to clean it up back in September of 2005, but failed to come into compliance.

The release in part read: "In spite of repeated warnings from both FIFA and UEFA, the commitment expressed by Greek government representatives to amend the law on sport to irrevocably recognise that football matters can only be decided by the HFF and its subordinated football structures has not been respected. In fact, the recently-presented draft of a new law on professional leagues constitutes another example of interference from the government in football affairs. Therefore, the FIFA Emergency Committee has determined that the deadline would not be met by the HFF and that the suspension of this federation was necessary.

"This decision means that the HFF and all of its members (clubs, players, officials) are suspended with immediate effect and until further notice from all international contact, which also includes participation in international competitions at all levels, the organisation of international matches in Greece and the appointment of officials for international duties."

Greece, who won the 2004 European Championship, are due to play in a friendly against England on 16 August and their first Euro 2008 qualifier, set for 2 September against Moldova. Their qualifying group also includes Hungary, Malta, Norway, Turkey, and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Thank you for asking and yes they won 4-0 and are off to Nationals in October. One of my players is half-Greek so he's manageable.

FIFA lifts suspension on Hellenic Football Federation

Zurich, 12 July 2006 - The FIFA Emergency Committee decided today (12 July 2006) to lift the suspension on the Hellenic Football Federation (HFF) after receiving confirmation that the Greek Parliament had approved an amendment to the national legislation relating to sport in order to bring it into line with the requirements of the FIFA Statutes and the relevant UEFA regulations.
The Emergency Committee had suspended the HFF on 3 July 2006 after adjudging that the situation of the Greek federation did not comply with the principles of the FIFA Statutes regarding the independence of football associations and their decision-making procedures. Discussions were subsequently held between FIFA and the HFF, as well as between the latter and Greek government authorities.

As a consequence, the Greek Parliament voted on the night of 11-12 July to introduce the following amendment to national legislation regarding sport:

"Specifically, for the sport of football, all the subjects of functioning and organisation of the sport, the Hellenic Football Federation and its members are self-governed by the HFF and its bodies, according to its statutes and regulations, as well as those that are determined by the Union des Associations Européennes de Football (UEFA) and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), even if different regulations are provided in the law 2725/1999, as it is in effect in the athletic legislation. Subjects of audit for the subsidies that the HFF receives from the state, control of legality, public order and safety are subject to the exclusive competence of the state."

In view of this amendment, the FIFA Emergency Committee deemed that the HFF is now in a position to respect the statutes and regulations of FIFA as well as those of UEFA. As a result, the suspension previously imposed on the Hellenic Football Federation has been lifted as of today

I had a feeling that this would be resolved quickly. The Greek governement is no different from any other when it comes to red-tape, but we are talking about soccer here.
