| Sad Bastard A Better Bastard | TheStar.com | Business | Rival hockey league to raid the NHL I have often wondered, especially during the Lockout, why hockey wouldn't persue, or perhaps couldn't persue a way of running leagues much in the same way Football (soccer) is in Europe. Basically each country would have an HF (Hockey federation) and a Pro League. -Canada (Biggest easily, especially with Dollar so strong. 1/3 of the $$ the NHL receives in revenue comes from the 6 Canadian Teams) -USA (Second biggest if properly paired ie, slashing the Miami's and Nashville's of the world out) -Russia (Dodgy money sources, but lots of it) - Sweden (Powerhouse Western Euro Hockey League) etc... And then your so called Champions League winner is awarded the cup. meanwhile every country has their own FA cups (or HF Cups if you follow along) and League Cups instead of playoffs. Obviously it would demand a shorter 'domestic season' due to top teams travelling to compete in the "Champ League" or "Stanley Cup Playoffs" ie Vancouver Canucks travelling to Jokerit or MoDo or Bar Eks Kaazaan Like it or not, globalization is a reality, why not in sports? Back on topic. Will this rival league ever get off the ground? Last edited by johnnybluenose; 12-19-2007 at 04:33 PM. |

| Premium Member A Better Bastard | I think it'd be sweet, but we'll never see it happen. They tried to make a league for the lockout and it couldn't fly, the Russians have more money but I just can't see it happening. Malkin could have made a killing in Russia but came here to make like 1/5th the money. Why? Russia sucks. |

| Not too bright BANNED | The rival league may happen but who will play there. The prestige league is the NHL. Unless the new league is going to overpay everyone by a bunch, not a single good north american player would play there. The Europeans may stay but i think they would rather play in the best league and that will be here. |

Fcuk me, I've always wanted more teams here and thought it's always been a fcuking joke that cities in the US that get 9K into the rink get teams while the likes of Winnipeg or Hamilton get fcuk all. But if that is true Johnny, I am pissed, and it's time Bettman got his ass canned. Fcuking mare... ![]() On topic. No league will ever rival the NHL - Period. As we have like 75% (Canadian) of the players in the NHL and more of a % in the minors, if the Europeans want to stay home that's fine by me. We'd lose a little lustre but not that much. I'm sure Don Cherry wouldn't mind... ![]() The NHL would be weaker but you can't fault the Europeans wanting their stars to play there. Hell, you'd see a lot of Canadians probably play there too. Interesting though.

| Premium Member A Better Bastard | It's kinda like the MLS situation if you think about it. Good players take any chance to play in Europe, but if they can't the settle for MLS. Beckham is an anomoly I'd say (plus he got $250M). It may get off the ground and take awhile, but it could happen. |

| Premium Member A Better Bastard | How about the NHL,AHL and the ECHL join up,,Like Soccer in the UK. 3 divisions. the bottom 3 NHL teams move down, the top 3 AHL teams move up and so on down to the ECHL. Then an average owner with heart a dream and some cash can build a new arena like in Winnipeg and shoot for promotion (NHL) and shitty NHL owners like say Edmonton lol or Nashville would have to buck up or get Religated. It would also make for a way better finnish to the end of the season. Hell a new arena in Victoria and the Salmon Kings could end up in the NHL,,Ya ok never happen, but the dream for Victoria hockey fans would be there and that would make the ECHL way more exciting
