| Interesting..... Plot twist: CTV purchases 'Hockey Theme' Monday, June 9, 2008 It appears Hockey Night In Canada will now begin the search for a new theme song. THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO -- The saga of CBC's "Hockey Night in Canada" theme song took a surprising turn Monday as rival network CTV announced it has acquired the rights to the iconic tune. CTV said it will use the song on NHL broadcasts on TSN, RDS and during the broadcaster's coverage of the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. "The song has a long and storied history in Canadian sports and has become ingrained in the hearts and minds of hockey fans across the country," said Rick Brace, CTV president of revenue, business planning and sports. "It is an iconic tune, embraced by Canadians everywhere, and we felt it was imperative to save it. We know it will be in hockey forever, so there's no doubt this acquisition will create value for us." The theme was composed by Dolores Claman in 1968. CBC's licence to use the song expired at the end of the Stanley Cup final last week. "I am very moved by how so many Canadians have taken the hockey theme to heart," Claman said in a release. "Throughout our negotiations, CTV displayed a tremendous amount of respect for my family and the song." Earlier Monday, CBC had announced it asked Toronto sports lawyer Gord Kirke to mediate negotiations between the public broadcaster and Copyright Music and Visuals, the company that controls the song's rights. CTV said it made an agreement in principle Friday with Copyright Music and Visuals after CBC announced a $100,000 contest to find a new theme song. The contest announcement followed months of negotiations that failed to result in a new licensing agreement between CBC and the agent.

| Sad Bastard A Better Bastard | This is terrible, and as much as I hate CBC, the song is only famous because of HNIC, not the other way around. When is TSN going to get a good original idea, the 1 up 1 down is terrible, and now they have bought CBC's should-be-trademark |

The song will get played it seems: "CTV has secured rights to the hockey world's signature song just days after TSN landed a lucrative, six-year deal with the NHL to broadcast 70 games per season - all of them involving Canadian teams and - crucially - 17 featuring the Toronto Maple Leafs in hockey's hottest TV market. "'The Hockey Theme' song will now live on CTV Inc. properties TSN, RDS and across Canada on CTV during coverage of the upcoming 2010 Olympics," CTV said in its statement. | Member | this song is a hockey night in canada song, not a hockey anthem. I was watching TSN last night and they were so proud that they could play it and it was sooooo stupid. When you hear that song you don't think hockey, you think Hockey Night in Canada. TSN is a bunch of grass cutting losers. |

| Sad Bastard A Better Bastard | Or gouging a government owned public broadcaster. Fact is at the end of the day paying 3 million bucks to a composer that you made famous for the rights in perpetuity makes sense as a business move by a Private Company, I, If I was Scott Moore, would have a hard time justifying to the taxpaying public that we overspent grossly to buy the rights to the Theme. I am always critical of the CBC for them throwing our taxpayer dollars at the Sports Programs to keep Anne of Green Gables and Coronation Street available for viewing to the 14 people across Canada that actually watch those programs...notice the Ads during those programs are the Govt of Canada ads and the Hinterland Who's Who. The CBC only is able to sell Advertising during sports and the news, that is it. I think it is Funny that CTV thinks they have bought something fantastic... This will be a non issue within 6 months. |

| Member | You know what? Well fcuking done on her! She had a very valuable asset, her team used public support and sentiment of that asset to drive up the price, and she got it! I think it is great for her and her family. Those of you painting her with and evil brush…give your head a shake. You’d be full on stupid not to do EXACTLY the same thing. And, thank GOD CBC stepped away from the bidding. I don't see the value in them having this moving forward. That being said, I do see the value in CTV picking this up. They are the big dog in Sports Broadcast in this country. They will be the future HNIC rights holders (eventually they will just bid it up so high CBC won't go there). This song will help them build their brand. CBC already has a brand (for now), and personalities...they don't need the song. $1M for them was probably too high to justify. At the end of the day, CBC has no business being involved. They are a public broadcaster- one, we should note, that has enforced censorship on its personalities in the past- and have no place gambling w/ our public dollars in a high stakes arena. Leave that to the private sector. |

| Sad Bastard A Better Bastard | good call Dude, I was in no way trying to paint her with the evil brush...I just said she was gouging the CBC, She had her price, it was met, by another party however. And that is business. The true value in anything is simply what someone is willing to pay for that thing |

| Sad Bastard A Better Bastard | Inside CBC Sports: "You should be hung for treason" That link was emailed to me by kjohnsob I think it is pretty stand up for Scott Moore to blog or whatever about it. The CBC has handled this whole debacle pretty well imho. Some of the comments are fairly out-there though... ![]() |
