Any guesses who the firsts will be? I’m betting Nail from Surrey for his goal and two assists against Metro Ford, a game I’m pretty sure I saw Azzi at, and AFC for beating veteran laden and Provincial Champions, Peg.

The PotW usually comes from a game Azzi was at. Nail's a shoe-in. However, Azzi loves the youngsters winning the award once in a while and the 16 yr-old Sap keeper has a slight chance.
TotW - recently promoted AFC should win it, but Azzi can't stand those guys. Look for Surrey's dominating performance to edge out the melonheads.

Hos just to let you know the shirt did come off F.Y.I. Little dissapointed in the pegasus players losing there cool. I hope they sort things out so they can win the nationals. Good luck peg. As for goalies of the week I would have to say it should go to Bucky after not playing for one year and metro ford giving him the snub. He sure showed that hes the best keeper around and that he desereves to be in this league. We don't care if azzi doesn't give us team of the week all these stupid awards mean nothing if you don't win when it counts at the end of the year.

WEEKS # 1 and #2 -- 2004-09-21

The newly-promoted AFC Leopards are the talk of the town after winning their first two games in the always tough and very competitive Premier Division of the VMSL. Last week the Leopards shut out the defending Province Cup champions--Pegasus FC--by a convincing 2-0 margin, while this past weekend AFC edged Columbus-Clan FC by a 2-1 score. Against Pegasus FC, Iain Sneddon and Terry St. Louis scored the goals, while Tyler Silvestre registered the shutout. Against Columbus-Clan, the Leopards struggled somewhat in the opening half allowing the home team to dictate the pace of the game. In fact, Columbus was very unfortunate not to take a well-deserved lead into the dressing room as AFC goalkeeper Tyler Silvestre came up with a couple of miraculous saves. It should also be noted that Columbus hit the woodwork on a couple of occasions before the Leopards took the lead totally against the run of play. Andrew Riopel scored both AFC goals, while midfielders Tim McMorran and Terry St. Louis turned in outstanding performances. Joey Scigliano scored the lone Columbus goal on a late penalty kick. As a result of the two victories, the AFC Leopards are leading Group 'B' of the Premier Division with a 2-0 record--the only team with a perfect record.

Also in Group 'B', the defending VMSL champions Surrey United also got off to a good start by clobbering the Metro-Ford Wolves 4-0 in the season opener. Newly-signed Niall Thompson gave Surrey a 1-0 halftime lead, a lead that the visitors never relinquished. Dave Hleuka, Sean Crocker, and Shawn Blakeway scored second half goals to solidify the emphatic margin of victory. This past weekend, however, Surrey United ran into a determined opponent in Sporting Club and had to settle for a 1-1 tie. After a lively start by the Portuguese club, Surrey came back strongly to dominate the first half but failed to capitalize on 3 clear chances. Thus the game remained scoreless after 45 minutes of play. Surrey United finally broke the deadlock in the midway through the second half when midfielder Christian Harbo headed home a Luke Ash free kick. A few minutes later, Sporting's VMSL All-Star Gomes brothers combined to create a quick counter attack. Mike Gomes burst down the middle before threading a great through ball to Mark Gomes who cleverly chipped goalkeeper Drew Smiley for the tying goal. Sporting Club had also tied the first game of the season against Columbus-Clan FC by a 2-2 score. Paulo Almeida and Steve Frazao scored the Sporting goals, while Romeo Cuter and young Stefan Leslie replied for Columbus.

Also in Group 'B', the newly-named Vancouver Firefighters got off to a so-so start by drawing both their opening matches. Last week, in a cross-over game against the Burnaby Canadians, the Firemen got a goal from Bob Anderson to secure the 1-1 tie. Playing coach Steve Millar replied for the Burnaby team. This past weekend, the Firemen were held to another 1-1 draw against the much-improved Metro-Ford Wolves. Jeff Potratz scored the Firefighters' goal, while Jay Gangnes replied for the Wolves.

In Group 'A', Westside Rino got off to a good start, tying the newly-promoted Croatia SC 1-1 in the opening match and defeating the always tough Sapperton Rovers 3-1 this past weekend. Playing coach Boban Aleksic scored the lone Westside goal against Croatia, while young Denis Dobrozdravich replied for the visiting team. Against Sapperton, veterans Steve Dickinson and Rob Hall, as well as young Cale Simpson, scored the goals for Rino's team, while Kent Waechter celebrated his release from ''Goalkeeper's Purgatory" by scoring Sapperton's goal. The previous week the Rovers had edged ICSF Inter 1-0 on a goal by veteran Ted Ullrich.

In other Group 'A' games, Trollers FC defeated Khalsa Sporting Club 3-2 in the opening game with Tom Adamson scoring twice and James Possee once. Shammi Birring and Pammi Birring replied for Khalsa. On Day 2 the Trollers lost by a 3-1 margin to ICSF Inter, who had--as we said earlier--dropped a 1-0 decision to the Sapperton Rovers in Day 1. Youngsters Sheldon Maistry, Alexander Marrello, and Tino Cucca scored the Inter goals, while Tom Adamson once again scored for the Trollers. Khalsa SC made up for its opening day loss by handing Pegasus FC its second consecutive loss--by a 3-1 score--during Day 2 activities. Pammi Birring, Pawan Bains, and Chetan Jhooty scored the Khalsa goals, while veteran Rob Reed replied for Pegasus.

TEAM OF THE BI-WEEK: AFC LEOPARDS for their gritty performances in defeating the Province Cup champions Pegasus FC and the rejuvenated Columbus-Clan FC. Seldom do we see a newly-promoted team in first place with a 2-0 record after 2 weeks of play.

PLAYER OF THE BI-WEEK: Goalkeeper TYLER SILVESTRE for his two outstanding performances in leading his team, the AFC Leopards, to two consecutive victories. Silvestre made several brilliant saves, particularly against Columbus-Clan FC, to preserve the margin of victory. For his excellent performances, Silvestre will receive a prize of a pizza for two from PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The prize is available up to 2004-10-14. WEEK # 3 -- 2004-09-28

It's becoming more and more obvious that the AFC Leopards are serious contenders for the VMSL Premier Division title. After winning their first two games, the Leopards faced the powerful, and undefeated, Surrey United at South Memorial Park in Vancouver on Sunday. The match lived up to its expectations as both teams gave their all in their quest for victory. At the end, however, it was the newly-promoted Leopards that emerged as victors against the defending VMSL champions. After a scoreless first half, Chris Clarke capped off a brilliant individual performance by finishing off a marvellous run by rifling an unstoppable shot past Surrey's fine goalkeeper Drew Smiley. Midway through the second half, Marcello Giunto scored what proved to be the winning goal. A late penalty kick goal by Surrey United's new acquisition--Cam Wilson--made the last few minutes very interesting, but the Leopards held on for the well-deserved victory. Trinidad and Tobago international Terry St. Louis displayed incredible ball skills in his midfield position, while goalkeeper Tyler Silvestre once again turned in an outstanding performance. The Leopards' record is now an unblemished 3-0, obviously good for sole possession of first place in Group 'B' of the Premier Division. Surrey United, on the other hand, slips to 1-1-1, 5 points behind the group leaders.

On Sunday, at Hillcrest Park in Vancouver, the visiting Trollers FC upset perennial powerhouse Westside Rino by a narrow 2-1 margin. As a result of the victory, the Trollers now find themselves in first place tie--with the Sapperton Rovers--in the tight Group 'A' standings with a record of 2-0-1. Veteran Shane Carphin gave the West Vancouver team a 1-0 half-time lead, a lead that was doubled when Sean Taylor scored early in the second half. A late marker by Westside youngster Phillip Lensky did not alter the final outcome of the contest.

Also on Sunday, at Adanac Park, the Italian derby took place as Columbus-Clan FC defeated ICSF Inter by a 3-1 margin in a cross-over match. The first half featured a rather intense midfield battle with few scoring chances and no goals. In the second half both teams opened up offensively with several clear-cut scoring opportunities. Midway through the second half, Columbus opened the scoring when Romeo Cuter sent Alex Elliott on a breakaway, an opportunity that the young 17-year old did not waste. Soon thereafter, veteran Joe Scigliano poked in a loose ball from a mad scramble in front of the Inter net to give Columbus a 2-0 lead. ICSF replied quickly as Brian VanSchagen blasted one of his patented long range shots past Columbus' fine goalkeeper Luca Dalla Pace. Late in the match, veteran Carmine D'Onofrio fed an impeccable through ball to Alex Elliott who proceeded to tuck the ball in the back of the Inter net for the insurance marker--and his second goal of the game. The victory evens Columbus' record at 1-1-1 in Group 'B' of the Premier Division, while Inter is now at 1-0-2 in Group 'A'.

In yet another Group 'B' Sunday game, this one at Hastings Bowl in Vancouver, Sporting Club had to settle for a 1-1 tie against the feisty and determined Metro-Ford Wolves. Sporting took the lead very early in the match on a superb strike by newcomer Zhou Zhang. Metro-Ford's fate seemed doomed when veteran defender Tim Harris received a red card late in the first half but the Wolves showed a lot of determination and finally tied the game when former Whitecap Andrew Veer set up Richard Price who slotted home the equalizer from the edge of the box. Forward Jamie Fletcher and defender Brook Scott were outstanding for Metro-Ford, while the Gomes brothers, Mike and Mark, were their usual brilliant selves for the Portuguese team.

Also in Group 'B', and also on Sunday, defending Province Cup champions Pegasus FC gained their first point of the season by holding the Vancouver Firefighters to a 1-1 tie in a match played at Newton Athletic Park. Both goals were scored in the first half with Chris Jarvie giving the Firemen the early lead and defender Darrin Burr heading home the equalizer late in the half. Jeff Skinner, Todd Gronlund, and Rob Toth turned in fine performances for the Firefighters, while Ryan Powell and goalkeeper Steve London played well for Pegasus FC.

On Saturday, at Adanac Park in Vancouver, the Sapperton Rovers held on to their share of first place in the Group 'A' standings by edging the last place Croatia SC by a 2-1 score. Luke Hogan converted a fine pass from veteran Paul Favaro to give the Rovers the early lead. Midway through the second half, with the score still 1-0, veteran defender Brian Donald was ejected from the game by referee Mauricio Navarro. Playing short-handed did not seem to affect the Rovers as they doubled their margin when Ted Ullrich headed home a fine cross from young Robert Sing. Newcomer Ruben Castelblanco narrowed the margin when he converted a fine pass from Paslar Mohammed, but it was a classic case of too little, too late for the Croatian club.

Finally, also on Saturday, the Burnaby Canadians stayed one point behind the Group 'A' leaders by defeating the homeless Khalsa Sporting Club by a narrow 2-1 margin. Khalsa took the early lead on Pammi Birring's third goal of the season, but the Canadians replied with two goals of their own in the second half when Tony Gaita--on a penalty kick--and brother Gino Gaita scored. Khalsa mounted an energetic late attack in search of the equalizer but was stymied by the spectacular goalkeeping of Burnaby's Trevor Jones.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: AFC LEOPARDS for their third consecutive victory, this latest one at the expense of defending VMSL champions Surrey United. Seldom do we see a newly-promoted team in first place with a 3-0 record after 3 weeks of play!

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP UPDATE

On Wednesday, October 6, BC Province Cup champions Pegasus FC got off to a great start by defeating the Nova Scotia champions--Halifax Celtic--by a 3-2 score in their first game in Prince Edward Island. Halifax took the early lead but Pegasus fought back and got the equalizer from Nico Berg on a great set-up by Mike Dodd. Dodd then proceeded to score two goals of his own to lead his team to victory.

WEEK #4 -- 2004-10-05

Trollers FC, perennial under-achievers in the VMSL Premier Division, have finally emerged as real contenders by taking over sole possession of first place in the very competitive Group 'A'. In a battle for first place honours, the Trollers edged the Sapperton Rovers 4-3 on Saturday at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver. Sapperton took an early 2-0 lead and it looked like it was destined to be a nightmare of a day for the home team. However, under the expert guidance of newly-acquired coach Andy Bramley, the Trollers stormed back and eventually took home all 3 points. Veteran Ted Ullrich opened the scoring at the 5th minute mark, while young Emilio Bottiglieri blasted a vicious 20-metre drive into the top corner for the second Sapperton goal. Before the end of the first half, Tom Adamson took advantage of a Sapperton defensive blunder and narrowed the margin by scoring the first of his 3 goals. After Adamson had tied things up early in the second half, Ullrich once again gave the Rovers the lead only to have Shane Carphin restore parity for the Trollers. Adamson's third goal of the game, at the 80th minute, wrapped things up for the West Vancouver team. The victory gives the Trollers sole possession of first place in Group 'A', while the Rovers are now in a 3-way tie for second place.

Also in Group 'A', the Burnaby Canadians and ICSF Inter fought to an exciting 1-1 tie on Saturday at Burnaby Lake's Turf field. Inter opened the scoring on a brilliant run by Sheldon Maistry who beat two defenders before crossing the ball onto the path of Joseph Marrello who had no difficulty in slotting it home for the go-ahead goal. Former ICSF player Gino Gaita tied things up before the half-time whistle. In the second half the Canadians had most of the ball possession, but Inter proved to be very dangerous on the counter-attack, due mostly to the speed displayed by young Maistry. The tie leaves Burnaby in a 3-way tie for second place, 3 points behind Trollers FC, while ICSF is now in penultimate position with only 4 points.

In the third Group 'A' match, played on Sunday at Adanac Park, Khalsa Sporting Club defeated the last place Croatia SC by a 4-2 score. Croatia took advantage of a lacklustre first half Khalsa performance by taking a 1-0 half-time lead on the strength of a goal by Lucas Cimoszko who converted a fine cross from Mustafa Demirici. Khalsa seemed to wake up in the second half and exerted some heavy pressure on the Croatia defenders. Led by VMSL all-star midfielder Matt Mori, Khalsa scored 3 unanswered goals early in the second half to put the result out of Croatia's reach. Matt Mori, Dave Mori, and Pammi Birring--with his 4th goal in as many games--scored the 3 Khalsa goals, while youth call-up Chetan Jhooty added the insurance marker late in the game. Playing-coach Davor Pavlovic scored the second Croatia goal, but it was a classic case of "too little, too late". Khalsa thus finds itself in a second-place tie, while Croatia is still at the bottom of the Group 'A' standings.

In a cross-over game, played on Saturday at Cloverdale Athletic Park, Surrey United--of Group 'B'--tied Westside Rino 1-1 in a very drab and uneventful performance by both highly-regarded teams. Westside took the lead midway through the first half when Steve Dickinson converted a highly-controversial penalty kick. Ten minutes later, young Sean Crocker tied the game up with a cracking right foot shot from outside the penalty area. The second half failed to produce a winning goal, due mostly to the fact that both teams appeared devoid of any attacking creativity. The result leaves both teams in the middle of their respective tables.

In a Group 'B' match, played on Friday evening at Mundy Park in front of large number of enthusiastic spectators, the AFC Leopards edged the Metro-Ford Wolves by a 2-1 margin. The game was an exciting affair for the entire 90 minutes as both teams took turns attacking. After a scoreless first half, the Leopards took the lead midway through the second half when Trinidad & Tobago international Terry St. Louis unleashed a marvellous 30-metre shot into the top corner of the Metro-Ford net. Late in the game, an Aaron McHardy free kick was inadvertently deflected into the net by a Metro-Ford defender for the winning goal. Seconds later, Azad Palani notched the Wolves' lone goal on a fine set-up from Andrew Veer. As a result of the victory, the Leopards remain unbeaten--with a perfect 4-0 record--and at the top of the table. Not bad for a newly-promoted team!

Also in Group 'B', Columbus-Clan FC defeated Pegasus FC in a match played on Saturday at Hastings Bowl. Jason Elligott, Keegan Ayre, Tiernan King, and Stefan Leslie scored for Columbus, while Frank Lore and Ryan Green replied for Pegasus FC. It should be mentioned that Pegasus FC was resting several of its top players in preparation for this week's national championships in Prince Edward Island. Finally, in Group 'B' action, the Vancouver Firefighters took a well-deserved 3-0 half-time lead and eventually defeated Sporting Club 3-1. For the Firemen, Trevor Bourne scored twice and Jeff Potraz once. Sporting dominated the second half and finally got its lone goal from the foot of Steve Dormer. Mike Frank, in the Firefighters' goal, was absolutely outstanding throughout the second half.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: TROLLERS FC for their thrilling, come-from-behind 4-3 victory over the Sapperton Rovers. As a result of the victory, the Trollers now hold sole possession of first place in the Group 'A' standings.

WEEK #5 -- 2004-10-12

The 5th week of the 2004-2005 season provided a couple of surprising results that could easily be classified as huge upsets. In Group 'B' of the Premier Division, the previously unbeaten AFC Leopards were demolished by Sporting Club, a team that had yet to win a game during this season! The 5-0 final result pretty well sums up a totally lacklustre performance by the Group 'B' leaders and, on the other hand, a superlative effort by the underdogs. The game, played on Sunday at South Memorial Park, featured a reasonably evenly-contested first half, a first half that ended with Sporting leading 1-0 on the strength of Steve Dormer's goal. However, the Portuguese team totally took over in the second half and scored 4 unanswered goals. Ryan Dormer led the way with a couple of markers, while Trevor Rosencrans and young Steve Frazao added a goal apiece. The result leaves the Leopards in first place with a 4-1 record, while Sporting Club is now in the middle of the table with a record of 1-3-1.

Also on Sunday, at Hastings Bowl, the Vancouver Firefighters remained the only unbeaten team in the Premier Division by defeating Group 'B' counterparts Columbus-Clan FC by an emphatic 5-2 margin. Columbus took the early lead when Alex Elliott--last season's GOLDEN BOOT AWARD co-winner--headed home a fine cross from Tiernan King. Shortly before the halftime whistle, player-of-the-match Chris Jarvie, knotted the score for the Firemen. The second half belonged entirely to the Firefighters as they scored 3 unanswered goals in the first 20 minutes. Trevor Bourne, Chris Jarvie--with his second of the match--and Jeff Potratz put the game out of reach with 3 goals in rapid succession. Columbus tried to bounce back and was rewarded when Joe Scigliano converted a fine pass from veteran Carmine D'Onofrio. But it was too little, too late as the Firemen responded with a 5th goal by Lucas Barrett in the dying moments of the match. Jarvie, Bourne, Graham Poole, and Greg Pears were outstanding for the Firemen who now climb into second place in Group 'B' with a record of 2-3-0. As a result of the loss, Columbus is now in third place with a record of 2-1-2.

In Group 'A' action, Trollers FC remained solidly in first place by virtue of a rather uneventful 1-0 victory over the last place Croatia SC. Steve Lake scored the only goal of the match midway through the second half. Midfielder James Possee was outstanding throughout the match for the West Vancouver team, whose record is now 4-0-1. Croatia, on the other hand, remains at the bottom of the Group 'A' table with a record of 0-2-3. Also in Group 'A', ICSF Inter leap-frogged over Khalsa Sporting Club by virtue of an impressive 5-0 victory. Inter played a solid, all-round game from start to finish and fully deserved the victory. Mike Tempesta capped off a fine individual performance by scoring twice, while Brian VanSchagen--on a penalty kick--, Kevin Crouch, and Tino Cucca each added a goal of their own to the winning cause. ICSF is now in third place in the Group 'A' table with a record of 2-1-2, while Khalsa slips to fifth place at 2-0-3.

Gino Gaita, on a superb header from a Sal Cuccione cross, got Burnaby back in the game late in the first half. In the second half the Canadians pressed hard for the equalizer but, as luck would have it, it was Rino's boys who scored the insurance marker against the run of play when veteran Craig Chiasson sent a floating free kick onto the head of young Alex Kosanin who re-directed the cross into the Burnaby goal. The victory improves Westside's record to 2-2-1 and puts them in second place in the Group 'A' standings, while the Burnaby Canadians drop to the middle of the table with a 1-3-1 record.

On Saturday, at Adanac Park, the weekly cross-over match took place as the Sapperton Rovers (of Group 'A') hosted the Metro-Ford Wolves (from Group 'B'). After an evenly played--and scoreless--first half, the Wolves came storming out of the gate for the second half and scored 3 brilliant goals within 15 minutes. Andrew Veer, Jay Gangnes, and Brook Scott tallied for Metro-Ford to put the game out of reach for the Rovers. In true Sapperton fashion, however, the home team fought back and pressed hard for the remainder of the contest. The Rovers were finally rewarded when defender Kent Waechter headed home a fine cross from Emilio Bottiglieri in the latter stages of the game to make the final score 3-1 in favour of the visiting team. Defensively, Scott, Elliott Smith, and Greg Jones played very well for Metro-Ford, whose record is now 1-2-2 in the Group 'B' standings. The Rovers' record, on the other hand, is 2-0-3 in Group 'A'. Both teams are in penultimate place in their respective groups.


Who will be the Team of the Week? MF or Sporting, both with Superlative performances, that in turn is putting Azzi in a penultimate place for his decision.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: MIKE DODD, of Pegasus FC, for his amazing performance in leading his team to a well-deserved victory in the Canadian National Championships. Dodd not only was the top scorer in the tournament, but also provided some vital leadership in his team's midfield. WEEK #6 -- 2004-10-19

A showdown between the two top teams in the Group 'B' standings of the VMSL's Premier Division took place on Sunday at South Memorial Park when the undefeated Firefighters hosted the AFC Leopards. After an evenly contested first half, a half which ended 1-1, the Firemen took the game to the Leopards in the second 45 minutes of play and were rewarded with 2 unanswered goals. Chris Jarvie opened the scoring for the home team, but Ian Clarke equalized shortly thereafter for the Leopards. In the second half, Trevor Bourne headed home what proved to be the winner, while Jonathan Bula unleashed a wicked left-footed drive from well outside the box to put the game out of AFC's reach. The victory puts the Firemen in a first place tie with the slumping Leopards. Special mention should be made of the fine play of the entire Firefighters' backline composed of Jeff Skinner, Todd Gronlond, Greg Pears, and Ratish Kumar.

On Saturday, at Cloverdale Athletic Park in Surrey, Columbus-Clan FC stayed in contention for the Group 'B' title with a narrow, and hard-fought, 2-1 victory over the under-achieving Surrey United. Columbus opened the scoring early in the game as Joe Scigliano timed a perfect header to young Alex Elliott who found himself all alone in front of the net. Elliott, last season's GOLDEN BOOT AWARD co-winner, made no mistake as he slotted
