OneSoccer hosts Asa Rehman, Oliver Platt, and Gareth Wheeler convened on Monday for a roundtable discussion about all things Canadian soccer, streamed live on OneSoccer's YouTube channel. The trio began by recapping the weekend in soccer, particularly Bayern Munich's triumph in Saturday's DFB-Pokal Cup final, where Canadian teenage Alphonso Davies once again put in a strong performance starting at left fullback. With Bayern now completing the German double and looking ahead to the resumption of the UEFA Champions League, the hosts discussed whether the Bavarian side might have a chance to complete the treble — and how close this one year would put Davies to being considered the most accomplished Canadian player in history. "I think it would obviously be the greatest season for a Canadian player ever," Platt said. "Whether he can be the most accomplished, compared to other players who did it for longer — (Paul) Stalteri, (Julian) de Guzman, Atiba (Hutchinson) — I think that's up for debate." The show then turned to the Canadian Premier League, where the panel discussed some of the challenges involved with returning to play for the 2020 season. Platt asserted that, as has been previously reported, the league is making progress in its decision, and is now working on choosing a location to begin play. "I think the league and all the owners are taking their time and taking a wait-and-see approach to see which route makes more sense," Platt said, "but there are issues that come with the long wait. One of the issues going around the league the past few days has been getting international players into the country." In the wake of York9 FC announcing Monday that it has had to release Peruvian striker Adrián Ugarriza, Platt explained that travel restrictions could have a similar impact on several teams with players trying to come to Canada from abroad. All in all, though, the group agreed that there's not necessarily a need to rush into any decisions. "I'm okay with waiting (for the CPL season) until all the boxes are checked and everything's properly planned through," Wheeler added. The show moved on to a discussion of the changing youth football scene in Canada, prompted by a recent article in The Province by J.J. Adams. "There's just more ways to be seen as a talented player, and more ways to be developed in the right way," Platt stated. To cap off the conversation, the group spoke a little about Atiba Hutchinson, and what his future might be with the Canadian national team, and then they finished by breaking down several of the rumoured proposed formats for Concacaf's 2022 World Cup qualification campaign.
