Get in CCB! That's the result I'm sure many of us wanted.

Took in second half of Rinos-Croatia after Whitecaps game. 87th minute winner from Yli-Hietenan as Croatia keeper let ball slip through his legs.

Good 45 minutes and both teams hit woodwork, Croatia twice, and with Croatia also having a goal disallowed for offside.

The field has been halved as we move closer to naming a BC Champion for 2019. The remaining eight sides will all be starting to believe that this will be their season. The surviving sides have quite the pedigree as well, with three league winners, a cup champions and the defending BC and National champions. Will the ultimate winner come from one of those teams? Only one way to find out...

Completely Baseless Predictions
Men’s A Provincial Cup

First Round: 6/8
Overall: 6/8

Quarter Finals:

Cowichan FC (VISL)
v Coastal (FVSL) - Sunday 12:00pm @ Sherman Road Turf, Duncan
Once again things have been disappointing for the VISL in this tournament. Cowichan , their league champion, is the only of their five entrants to advance past the first round and that was at the expense of another VISL side in their 1-0 win over Bays United. Regardless of the rest of the league, Cowichan have some into this tournament with designs on winning it on home-ish soil in Nanaimo come May 12. Their draw has them at home all the way up to the final and, after reaching the semi-finals last season and being ousted at home by eventual winners Rovers, they will be hoping this year their home turf gives them an edge. For Coastal it is back to back trips to the Island having overcome the journey to Victoria last round, beating Lakehill 2-0 led, as usual, by talisman Jake Starheim. He will take his troops up Island in this round so it will be interesting to see whether Coastal can claim the mantle of road warriors or if the back to back trips will have them less than motivated. Despite somewhat flying under the radar this season and missing out on any silverware to this point, Coastal will surely have being buoyed by their opening round win and, irrespective of their rather indifferent finish to their domestic campaign, must surely have been sparked back into motivation as their quest for the Province's biggest prize goes on. In lots of ways these two teams are a lot alike, given that they both clearly have the pedigree to reach the final, and likely have had for some years now, but, for a variety of reasons, have always seemed to find a way to come up short. This season could well be the year for one of these long overdue sides, but it can only be one who advances here. I think this match is likely to be nip and tuck, probably decided by the first goal of the match. That is how the first round matches for both these sides played out and I think we are going to see something similar again. It's a toss up but I will give the nod to the home side, especially with the travel factor.

Port Moody Gunners (FVSL) v CCB LFC (VMSL) - Saturday 4:00pm @ Trasolini Turf, Port Moody
Without a doubt this game is the Match of the Round. This is the FVSL/VMSL rivalry at its best with the FVSL champions hosting the VMSL runners up. Adding a further layer to this one is the fact that CCB epitomize, in the eyes of the FVSL admin, everything that is wrong with amateur soccer in BC and the VMSL specifically. It also so happens that a prominent FVSL admin member also happens to be directly involved with running Port Moody and will be on the touchline for this one. CCB went on a very well publicized summer recruitment drive, luring top talent from all over the Province to their club through (allegedly) nefarious means. For their part though, they have leaned into the "sold my soul" mentality and seem to relish their role as the villains. On the other side of the coin, Port Moody have leveraged their location and SFU connections to assemble a top squad and one that were both UPL and Soccer City Cup champions in the FVSL. This means we will have a plethora of attacking talent on display in this fixture from the Milads, Mehrabi and Rahmati, plus Yassin Essa and former Whitecap Caleb Clarke for CCB to Cole Almond and UPL Golden Boot winner Graeme Meers for the Gunners. Hopefully that also translates to plenty of goals as well. Away from the goal scoring limelight, Port Moody will be hoping their secret weapon can be UPL MVP midfielder Mark Talisuna. The man in the engine room for Port Moody has caught the eye all season and one or two more cynical voices have already began to speculate about which VMSL side he will be suiting up for next year, which is exactly the sort of rhetoric that should really spice this clash up. Plenty of quality players, yes, but there is also that noisy neighbour/annoying little brother relationship between the FVSL and VMSL that is likely to bubble over in this one as well. The VMSL's dominance in this tournament has been well documented over the years and is a rather large bone of contention between the leagues. The FVSL have been banging on the door though, reaching the final in consecutive seasons. Port Moody are arguably their best hope this season and to keep the FVSL's dream in full focus they will need to slay the proverbial dragon in CCB. Hopefully this one serves up a classic. As for a winner, there is no question that both teams have the pedigree to advance. However, I think this is a classic case of if you want to be the man, you have got to beat the man and so, until proven otherwise, I will have to go with history and pick the VMSL side to advance once again.

Croatia SC (VMSL) v Rino's Tigers (VMSL) - Saturday 4:00pm @ Burnaby Lake West #4, Burnaby
These two domestic rivals will lock horns once more in a bottom half of a draw that has hardly been kind to the teams who saw their names come out of the hat later. Rino's already had to overcome a solid domestic opponent in Coquitlam, while Croatia, the VMSL champions, were handed last year's Provincial runners-up in Langely from the FVSL. As it was though, on the day neither team's opponent was particularly up for it and both these sides ran out easy winners. Now though they clash head to head, just as they did in their final league game of the campaign. Both new that match was a must win is they were to harbour an chance of claiming the VMSL title, though in truth most though surely that CCB, with two matches in hand, would be wind up as champions. After a tense, tight affair and injury time goal saw Croatia take all three points and then, after CCB self destructed, the VMSL crown as well. They will be hoping their new talented cast featuring the Malamura brothers Mark and David plus Colin Jaques and Daniel Davidson can lead them back to Provincial Cup glory under the watchful guise of veteran player/coach Johnny Sulentic who was at the heart of the 2014 BC Champioship winning side. Rino's however, are set to be a different squad then the one that played on the final day of the VMSL campaign. That Rino's side was void of a handful of players either trialing at CPL outfit Pacific FC or away on UBC duty. The Vancouver boys will be hoping that a full strength side tilts the balance of power back in their direction and this time they will have the extra gear necessary to find the crucial goal. In doing so Rino's will exercise some demons after their administrative disqualification from last season's tournament when they looked to be potential title contenders. One assume this should be yet another tight affair after Croatia won both league meetings by just a single goal. That history would suggest the Europeans should be the favourites here, but I think Rino's have a point to prove after last year. Assuming they have a full roster to select from, I think that the Vancouver boys will find a way to edge this one.

BCT Rovers Tigers (VMSL) v Abbotsford United (FVSL) - Friday 8:30pm @ Cloverdale Athletic #2, Surrey
At the bottom of the draw, defending BC Champions Rovers were able to overcome a West Van side that had just a few weeks earlier beat them in the Imperial Cup final. Their reward is a home date against the FVSL's Pakenham Cup champions, Abbotsford United. Abby have been punching above their weight all season out in the Valley, pulling off some great results against all the top sides in their league. However, it was still not enough to see them finish any higher than fifth place. While they showed their pedigree in winning the Pakenham Cup, this would be a stunning result if they were to overturn the BC and National champs with the likes of former TFC man and VMSL Golden Boot winner Nick Soolsa among their ranks along with cohorts Pavi and Ryan Dhillon and Cam Hundal. If any side has proven this season that games are played on the pitch not on paper, it is Abbotsford, so write them off at your own peril and Rovers have shown some fallibility this season, particularly when they are at less than full strength. However, given they are the home side and got to pick the day at time for this one it stands to reason that they should be fully staffed. Assuming they do in fact have a full squad to chose from, expect this one to be fairly straight forward.

The buzz for this year's competition has been non-existent from BC Soccer. It's been disgraceful and shows you just where they prioritize the men's adult amateur game in the province. Really unacceptable imo.

From the initial diabolical website to no mentions of the matches or results on their Twitter feed, no sharing of articles from myself and others, and no sharing of videos from myself and others.

Lots of plugs for Pacific FC of course, which is far closer to some people's hearts than the local leagues. Hopefully the member clubs raise this with BC Soccer and ask them why. If Cowichan don't make the final, the attendance is going to be atrocious on May 12th, if they even publicise it at all.

Are you new here? LOL.

The amateur mens game around here has long been completely disrespected by anyone outside the immediate circles. It's nothing new. Basically, since it's not professional, it's strictly considered rec ball, and who would come out to watch rec ball.

The top competition in the Province has reached its penultimate stage and we have two fantastic match ups on offer. Will we have a return to an all VMSL final? The FVSL has spoiled that party the past two seasons, but they will not be in the showpiece event this season as all three of their remaining representatives were eliminated in the last round. The only potential spoiler left is Cowichan and what a spoiler they would be as they look to get the VISL back into the final for the first time since Gorge won the title back in 2010. It had been an all VMSL affair through until 2017 when Aldergrove crashed the party and now the Mainland league are looking to reclaim a monopoly on the fixture. Can they accomplish the feat? Or will the Islanders make a splash?

Men’s A Provincial Cup

Quarter Finals: 4/4
Overall: 10/12

Semi Finals:

Cowichan FC (VISL) v CCB LFC United (VMSL) - Sunday 12:00pm @ Sherman Road Turf, Duncan
Here Cowichan are again in the semi final of the Provincial Cup. They have been here twice before, including just last year, but both visits have brought only disappointment. The five time defending VISL champions will be hoping to end the curse on the Island and ensure the league does not got a full decade between appearances in the final. Fate was kind pulling them first out of the hat and giving them home field throughout the tournament and they have delivered the goods two matches in a row on home soil. Their opener was a 1-0 win over VISL cohort Bays United and then moved their kickoff to noon Sunday, presumably in hopes of making the travel for their Mainland opponents as much of a headache as possible. And why not? It's supposed to be a home field advantage and you don't get extra points for being accommodating. It worked a treat as well as they skated past Coastal FC from the FVSL 3-1 last time out. Now though, there looms a different beast altogether. CCB and their band of (allegedly) well paid, "sold your soul" mercenaries are making the journey over. The Surrey based outfit have already made one trip up Island, waxing Mid-Isle 3-0 in their opener. They then ran out to another 3-0 lead against FVSL champions Port Moody before the Tri Cities side made things interesting late. In fact, had the Gunners netted a penalty when they had the chance at 3-0 it could have been a different match altogether after it finished 3-2. Cowichan will need to rely on every bit of their VISL best defensive record to keep free scoring CCB at bay. It can be done and CCB have suffered a couple of dips in form this season, one of which cost them the title at the death, but they look to be back to their best now and will be eyeing the Provinces ultimate prize having fallen short of their other two chances at silverware this year. A good side and great home field advantage might be enough for Cowichan and they will be sure of a bumper crowd to cheer the boys on; but based on the VISL's record in this tournament and the pedigree off CCB's roster the traveling side have to be favourites here.

Rino's Tigers (VMSL) v BCT Rovers Tigers (VMSL) - Saturday 4:00pm @ Point Grey Turf, Vancouver
The Match of the Round pairs up the two beasts, Tigers specifically, from the VMSL. Both have had to negotiate tricky fixtures to get to this stage with Rino's battering a resurgent Coquitlam 3-0 before returning the nipping past VMSL champions Croatia 1-0. The Europeans had beat Rino's 1-0 at the death to win the VMSL title in their final match of the season but it was Rino's returning the favour in this tournament, as it was their turn to find the late winner. Rovers, meanwhile, had to immediately turn around and take on a West Van side that had beaten them just two weeks previous in the Imperial Cup final. This time though, just like between Rino's and Croatia, the shoe was on the other foot with Rovers advancing after a 3-1 win, the same score they had lost by in the cup final. They received a bit of a soft touch in the quarter finals, waltzing past FVSL Pakenham Cup winners Abbotsford 3-0, but that will have them in good form coming into this one as they look to defend their Provincial title and earn the chance to defend their National Championship. The story with both these sides is generally whether or not they are able to field a full strength squad. At their best, both teams would likely be clear favourites to win the VMSL title every season at a canter, but, due to injuries and other commitments, neither side is seemingly able to rely on having their best eleven available week in week out. The sides split their two league meetings with Rovers winning 1-0 in November and Rino's running out 4-0 winners in the reverse fixture. Safe to assume though that the losing side was not able to ice a full lineup when they succumbed to defeat. The offensive capabilities of each side are well known with the Dhillons, Pavi and Ryan, complimenting former TFC man and 32 goal Golden Boot winner Nick Soolsma for Rovers Tigers opposite Rino's leading scorer Declan Rodrguez and UBC standout Kristian Yli-Hietanen. Both sides also boast midfield maestros in Rover's Cam Hundal and Rino's SFU wizard Matteo Polisi. Again though, this one is likely to come down to which team can field the most complete cast of characters. Hopefully, for the neutrals, both sides will be at full strength and we will have a true clash of the titans. Assuming that's the case it should be a cracker, as well as a complete toss up. As for a winner, Rino's look motivated (though based on the video of their semi-final win, still less than enthusiastic about celebrating...) and of the two sides Rovers have been the less consistent throughout the year. It is fine margins this time of the year and that might well be just enough.
