After the first set of fixtures, there've been a few impressive performances from some unlikely names. Paulo Wanchope was dangerous for Costa Rica, while the Korean keeper, Woon Jae Lee, made some really nice stops the other day.

But above all, Philipp Lahm has really impressed me. Although he played with Bayern last year, I haven't had much opportunity to watch him. So far he's been fantastic. Virtually every offensive opportunity German generates, begins with him.

Performances? How about the referees? I totally think there's some sort of crap goin on in the background of the tournament. Italy vs. Ghana - a clear two handed push in the box and no penalty call against ITA

USA vs. Italy - phantom red cards

Italy shouldn't need the help!

Phantom red cards?

That elbow was as bad as anything you'll see in the UFC

And the studs showing slide tackle to the ankle was definately worthy of a red

The second yellow to Pope was definately suspect, I'll agree with that one

The refereeing has been horrendous.
But to get back on topic..
The best two breakout performances I have seen have been:
Lahm and Messi in his half game v Serbia.
I know the world already knows about him since he has been at Barca since he was 12 or something... But he put on a show.
If he doesn't get some starts soon something is up...
