Canada announces Gold Cup squad

The 23 players who will represent Canada at the Gold Cup have been selected.

Manager Benito Floro named his squad for the competition on Tuesday, one week after Canada completed a 6-0 win on aggregate versus Dominica in 2018 World Cup qualifying.

Comprising the squad are 10 Major League Soccer players, including Marcel de Jong of Sporting Kansas City, Tesho Akindele of FC Dallas, Jonathan Osorio of Toronto FC, Russell Teibert of the Vancouver Whitecaps, and Cyle Larin of Orlando City SC.

Canada is unbeaten in its past five matches, although the majority of those results have been achieved against Caribbean minnows.

"It is true that good results always help," Floro said. "But now we are going to play against three teams that are higher ranked than us so we need to show that we are growing and developing against those teams and show that we are doing things in the right way."

Floro's squad will assemble in California on June 28 before kicking off their Gold Cup campaign in July. Canada will compete in Group B against the likes of Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Jamaica.

Here are the 23 players selected by Floro:

Goalkeepers

Lars Hirschfeld (Valerenga), Quillan Roberts (Toronto FC), Kenny Stamatopoulos (AIK Fotboll)

Defenders

Marcel de Jong (Sporting KC), David Edgar (Birmingham City), Andre Hainault (VfR Aalen), Dejan Jakovic (Shimizu S-Pulse), Nik Ledgerwood (Energie Cottbus), Ashtone Morgan (Toronto FC), Karl W. Ouimette (New York Red Bulls), Adam Straith (Fredrikstad FK)

Midfielders

Tesho Akindele (FC Dallas), Kyle Bekker (FC Dallas), Julian de Guzman (Ottawa Fury FC), Simeon Jackson (Coventry City), Jonathan Osorio (Toronto FC), Pedro Pacheco (Santa Clara), Samuel Piette (Deportivo de la Coruna), Tosaint Ricketts (Hapoel Haifa), Russell Teibert (Vancouver Whitecaps), Maxim Tissot (Montreal Impact)

Forward

Marcus Haber (Crewe Alexandra), Cyle Larin (Orlando City)

Sucks that Atiba is injured.

Borjan missing in between the sticks as apparently he turned down the invite due to club commitments (Champions League qualification games) :(

Didn't even think of him, good question!

Has he been in form for the Timbers? I think he only started playing again less than a month ago.

Yeah Johnson needs more game time...

Atiba is Canada's best player and a big loss to the team.

Always interesting to see Pedro Pacheco picked, but from the games I remember he rarely sees the field...

I believe Will Johnson turned it down to focus on club since he's missed so much time for Portland after the leg break.

Can not score a goal for the life of them. Will should be with Portland. Team Canada does not need any guy that has no respect for his country. One must be proud of the guys out there they gave it all.
Fifa Fifa kick us in the arrs. Hard to watch. Should have been a goal. Subs did not help. In my opinion there should have been no subs in a game like that.
Old guy is trying hard but unless we find a goal score there is no way.
