Former MLS MVP Dwayne De Rosario announces retirement

Dwayne De Rosario is hanging 'em up, exchanging his boots and kit for some dress shoes and a spiffy suit.

The 36-year-old, who most recently played in MLS with hometown club Toronto FC last season, revealed on Sunday that he has made the decision to step away from the game.

Salute to all my fans/family who supported me throughout my #MLS career I am humbled by all your love & support. It was always a dream of mine to represent my family & community #Scarborough #Toronto #Canada to the best of my ability everywhere I played. Know that dreams come true. I'm excited for what's next with my new role in MLSE as ambassador. Again, I #salute you all. @torontofc @houstonDynamo @sjearthquakes @dcunited #NYRedBulls

The photo, highlighting his myriad accomplishments in MLS, was accompanied by the following message:

De Rosario, who began his MLS career with San Jose in 2001, also spent time with Houston, the New York Red Bulls and D.C. United, winning four league championships and earning MVP honors in 2011 while starring for D.C.

He retires as Toronto FC's all-time leading scorer, finding the net 28 times for the Reds over two separate spells. He will take on an ambassador role with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Canadian club.

Affectionately known as Dero for much of his career, the attacker will, in his home country at least, likely be remembered most fondly for his scoring exploits with the Canadian national team, where he is the all-time leader with 22 goals in international competition.

So would his new role be something like that held by Carl Valentine @ the Caps?

I wasn't always a fan of his when playing for the MNT but gotta give credit to the guy as he was pretty successful in MLS.

Show me the money!
