From the Media Desk of the Fraser Valley Soccer League…

There was a surprise result this week in the Umbro Premier League that could well impact the title race when the finally count is tallied in a little over a month’s time. There was also an epic battle between a pair of longtime UPL rivals that saw once of the league’s rising stars stake a claim to a place among the elite players, only to be given a lesson by one of the very best the UPL has to offer as he took over the Golden Boot lead. Which teams and which players are we talking about? The place to find all the answers is in the UPL Review of course!

There was a helping hand in Division 1 for leaders Chilliwack FC this week. Second place Langley United B were beaten 1-0 by Port Moody Piranhas thanks to a goal from Matt Rosenlund and a division leading eighth clean sheet from Terry Jackson. This allowed Chilliwack to move within a point of clinching first place and a return to the Umbro Premier League when they demolished Abbotsford United U21 9-0 thanks to hattricks for both Nicholas Haywood and Malcolm Stafford. Not to be outdone by Jackson, Jonathan Vugteveen also notched his eighth clean sheet of the year in the win. Abbotsford’s loss also makes things interesting at the bottom where Langley FC gained three more points on them in the relegation race with a 1-0 win over TSS FC Rovers II. That win leaves them five points back of Abbotsford with three games remaining. Elsewhere, Noah Kroeker had all three goals for TWU Spartans B in their 3-1 defeat of Port Moody Gunners B and North Delta SC NEWWAY played out a 2-2 draw with Juba FC.

It is official in Division 2A. Congratulations to Abbotsford United B who are once again champions thanks to a 1-0 win over Division 2B leaders Abbotsford SA Red Devils. Goal number fourteen for the season for Tej Paul Kullar was the difference maker as United goalkeeper Arturo Ortiz Silva shut the door once more to put in him pole position to win the Golden Glove, notching an eighth clean sheet of the campaign. That loss for Red Devils meant that second place Langley United Dynamo were able to close the gap but, for the second week in a row, they failed to take their opportunity, losing 3-2 to Langley City FC. Also failing to gain ground in 2B were third place Surrey United SC who fell by that same score to Mission SC A in a battle of teams trying to lock down Provincial Cup berths. Another piece of business decided this weekend was the relegation battle in 2A. Westcoast Black Knights, led by hattrick hero Daniel Le Page, banked three big points in a 6-0 win over 2B last place side SAFC Hawks. That result, combined with last place Surrey United Elite U21 losing 1-0 to TSS FC Rovers III on an Armaan Boparai goal, mean that it will be Surrey who go down, while Black Knights secure another season in Div. 2. Despite another lopsided loss, SAFC themselves are not doomed to relegation yet, as they are still just three points back of WRU Vault FC who also lost this week, they were beaten 4-1 by Aldergrove United Lightning.

Seismic results at the top of both Division 3 pools have left us on the precipice of crowning this season’s champions. In 3A, for the second week in a row Langley United Impact delivered a decisive victory against a title rival, this time a 2-1 win over neighbours Langley United Highlanders. Goals by Paul Atwell and Jesse Richardson secured the points and put the Impact in a position where a win in their final match of the season will ensure they are champions. Other contenders, Westcoast FC Rowdies and Tri-City FC, will now have to hope for some help while doing all they can to keep the pressure on the Impact, as Tri-City did with their 2-0 win over PoCo FC Rockets with Nima Ranji scoring both goals. In 3B it was an important win in our Match of the Week for first place BCT Punjab FC over Ladner FC. A goal for Ladner’s Levi Shevernoha was not enough on this night as Mandip Singh and Muhhamad Talha Mansoor were on target for Punjab in a 2-1 win. A brace by Justin Lodge moved Fraser Valley Blue Devils back in to second place ahead of Ladner thanks to their 3-2 win over LOS FC. However, Punjab firmly control their own fate, needing just two more wins to clinch the title. In other results, Jack Mason had a top performance for Port Moody Rangers U21, netting a hattrick in his team’s 3-1 win over Langley FC Benders in 3A.

It appears the inevitable has become the official in Masters 1 as after beating Chilliwack Rapids 7-0, Port Moody Rangers have likely clinched the Masters 1 A crown. It seems unlikely, but if make up games from Week 1 of the season are to be played, then technically Rangers need one more win to make mathematically certain of their championship. Regardless, it is clear Port Moody are the top Masters side in the FVSL this season, so congratulations and best of luck representing the league in the Provincial Cup. In the B Pool, though, the battle for that title and the Provincial Cup places guaranteed to the top two finishers is heating up. Most teams had the week off for the long weekend, but North Delta Rangers SC B and Surrey United SC B tangled in a feisty affair that produced seven yellow cards and a 3-0 with for North Delta. This moves them five points clear in of second place Surrey. Similarly, most team had the weekend off in Masters 2, but in the one game that did go ahead Sanji Rana had a stellar outing, scoring four goal for Hurricanes FC in their 5-1 defeat of Westcoast FC Chargers. Meanwhile, even though some of the “younger” teams went ahead with games the Over 45 Division took a sabbatical!

In Division 4 make up games rounding out the 4A schedule gave Sts’Ailes Chiefs leading scorer Brent Durie a chance to stake a claim to the Golden Boot. He scored twice as the Chiefs closed out their campaign with a 3-3 draw against Westcoast FC Dons. That gives Durie 26 goals for the season, three more than his closest challenger Jason Brand from 4B’s North Delta SC United SJ who were idle this week but still have three matches remaining. Speaking of 4B, the title race rages on as Offside FC and WRU Cloverdale FC look set to go to the wire. Both sides had convincing wins this past weekend with a Kenneth Colosie brace and a Corey Manning hattrick leading Cloverdale to a lucky 7-0 thrashing of North Delta SC Pirates. Meanwhile, Azeez Dhanoa and Ajaypal Johal notched a pair each in Offside’s 6-0 win over Whalley Wakanda B to keep them a point up on Cloverdale, though they have played a game more.

MATCH OF THE WEEK

This week we check in on Pool B of Masters 1 where Surrey United SC B welcome local rivals South Surrey FC A to Cloverdale. With the new alignment in the Masters divisions, this season the top two teams in Pool B will advance to represent the FVSL at in the BC Soccer Masters B Provincial Cup, along with the winner of the FVSL Masters B Cup. Currently Surrey United sit perched in second place, but South Surrey FC are hot on their heels, just three points back. Surrey are led up front by leading scorer Trevor Tagieff whose seven goals on the season have helped to lift United to their current standing. However, Surrey’s real bread and butter is at the other end of the pitch, where goalkeeper Brian Ginther is among the contenders for the Golden Glove award, having recorded five clean sheets.

For SSFC, their danger men going forward are could be just about anyone on any given day, with the team taking a squad approach to scoring goals. They too are solid at the back, with Mike Arrano, who also has five shutouts to his name, keeping things safe defensively. With the finish line for the season nearing, if SSFC are going to make a move to real in their local neighbours the time is now. While both teams have just a few matches remain, Surrey do hold a game in hand, the two teams will face each other once more before all is said and done. These two fixtures seem likely to be decisive in determining who will represent the FVSL at BC Soccer’s post season tournament. The two sides did meet early in the season with Surrey United emerging as 3-1 winners on that day. Will history repeat itself this time around? Or can South Surrey avenge that September loss on route to leapfrogging their rivals?

Surrey United SC B vs. South Surrey FC A goes Sunday night at Cloverdale Athletic Park #5 with kickoff at 12pm.
