Bay Area tremors felt over the Internet (2 August 2004)

Soccer Silicon Valley, a grassroots group formed to support the construction of a new soccer stadium within the San Jose and Bay Areas, has just launched its own website and announced that a major rally will be held in San Jose on 20thAugust.

The new website will keep fans informed about the latest construction negotiations and feature an on-going petition to government authorities, demonstrating that soccer is a worthwhile investment for the local community as a whole. As an aid to potential sponsors, it will also carry marketing and demographic information about the Bay Area and Major League Soccer.

The San Jose ‘Earthquakes’ are in desperate need of a permanent home, despite having been based in Northern California from 1974 onwards. Indeed, Major League Soccer's inaugural game was actually held in San Jose in 1996 and the Earthquakes have since won the MLS Cup championship twice, in 2001 and 2003.

Friday 20th August will see the Soccer Silicon Valley-promoted rally take place, from noon till 1:00pm, at the Plaza de Cesar Chavez Park in downtown San Jose. It is intended to celebrate soccer’s past, present and, most importantly of all, future within the Bay Area.

SSV is a grassroots association, comprised of soccer fans and players, along with interested businessmen and politicians, all of whom advocate the development and construction of a permanent soccer facility to house the San Jose Earthquakes, the Bay Area's only professional team, and also provide recreational soccer playing fields for the use of the entire community.

Their website can be found at www.soccersiliconvalley.com
