England prepare for 2018 World Cup bid (27 July 2004)

England are dusting off their bidding process files and preparing for yet another assault on hosting the World Cup tournament, this time with the year 2018 as their goal. Apparently UKSport has already held meetings with government ministers and the Football Association has also been involved in preliminary discussions.

However, with Great Britain currently bidding to host the 2012 Olympic Games and the successful nation(s) due to be announced during June 2005, so the Football Association will not commit to proceeding with the 2018 bid before then.

As England's last World Cup bid for the 2006 tournament ended prematurely, receiving only two votes in the first round, UKSport has instigated a more professional bidding process this time around. Parties involved feel they have a strong case for being awarded the 2018 tournament, now FIFA has a rotational system in place to ensure the event takes place on a different continent every four years.

The 2006 event will take place within European shores, while South Africa has won the rights to 2010. Now, as Brazil looks to be favourite for 2014, it should almost certainly be Europe's turn to host again in 2018, assuming no other Asian country, apart from Japan or Korea, can come up with a serious bid.
