Mexican continues wave of acquisitions (3 August 2004)

Jorge Vergara, owner of renowned Mexican club ‘Chivas’, announced on Monday in conjunction with Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber, that his new team is to be located in Los Angeles and will play at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.

Grupo Omnilife Founder and CEO, Jorge Vergara, purchased the rights, to become the Major League's eleventh team from 2005, for $10million a year ago. He explored various different stadium and location options, in several American cities, before deciding on Los Angeles.

Vergara is the owner of Mexican powerhouse Club Deportivo Guadalajara, a team usually known as simply ‘Chivas’, as well as the Costa Rican giants Saprissa, but he introduced Antonio Cue, a Mexican real estate entrepreneur, into partnership for his latest venture with the Los Angeles-based MLS team.

The 2005 MLS season will kick off with twelve teams next spring, for the tenth time in its brief history, and Los Angeles will be home to two of them, the other being the previously announced Salt Lake City organization, owned and operated by Sports Capital Partners LLC and longtime sports executive David W. Checketts.
