Heymans, Hartley win bronze in diving

TSN.ca Staff w/files from CP

8/16/2004

ATHENS (CP) - Emilie Heymans and Blythe Hartley won Canada's first medal of the Summer Olympics on Monday, a bronze in the women's synchronized 10-metre event.

Chinese teenagers Lishi Lao and Ting Li won the gold and Russians Natalia Goncharova and Yulia Koltunova the silver. Heymans, from Montreal, and Hartley, from Edmonton, previously finished seventh in the synchro springboard.

The Canadian pair finished with a score of 327.788. Lishi and Ting finished first with a score of 352.14, while Goncharova and Koltunova of Russia recorded 340.92 points.

Both divers have better chances at medals in their individual events -Heymans in the 10-metre and Hartley in springboard.

It was a morale booster for the Canadian divers who had yet to hit the podium in early diving events.

"I feel like we really needed this event because they were kind of down after the first day," Mitch Geller, head coach for Canada's diving team, said.

"I think this is a real boost that will get everybody up for the individual events," he added.

The 10-metre synchro event was a warmup for Heymans, the world champion in the individual event. The preliminary round of the women's tower starts Friday.

Heymans won a silver in the same synchro event four years ago in Sydney with a different partner.

Remember Annie Pelletier? Man she was one hot Canadian diver.

Oh Canada.
Question do the other atheletes have to stand around the outside of the trampoline with their hands in the air ensuring the jumper does not fall off like in elementary school?

Trampoline?

How did we do in waterslide?

We lost, but we tried our best and it was a great learning experience. We went there trying to better our personal best and we did. We're happy with our accomplishments.

You know the story.

Croatia 3 Medals
Canada 2 Medals

Added another bronze in tennis... :)

Apparently members of Croatia's soccer team are performing in both 3m and 10m diving. Canada doesn't stand a chance now in the medals race vs Croatia!

And by the way people...when has Canada ever done well at the summer Olympics other than in 1984 when every steroid induced Eastern Bloc nation was boycotting the games? Seriously now...our swimmers have averaged TWO freaking medals at Olympics and now we're shocked when we get zero? Hardly ever the world power there.

What we're seeing from Canada now is how many medals can be won by a country with high drug testing standards and whose judges are not corrupt.

well said, 9-1-1

still was a bit dissapointing to be tied with Mongolia for as long as we were.

wrt the swimming, there were only 5 personal bests of all roughly 50 swimmers, and 3 of those came from the same guy. Thats my beef with them, not how many medals they got. If they all got personal bests and we got no medals, that would be much better in my view.
This is it, the big show, it would be nice if they were prepared for it......
