Vancouver Whitecaps v Atlanta United – The Story In Pictures

Vancouver Whitecaps’ winning run was firmly stopped at two when the MLS champs came to town on Wednesday night.

Atlanta had turned things around in style after a poor start to the season and a 1-0 win at BC Place made it five straight wins and six victories from their last seven. All their wins have come without giving up a goal and when Josef Martinez tucked away a 29th minute penalty it felt a long road back for the ‘Caps, and so it proved.

Maxime Crepeau put in another tremendous performance for Vancouver, pulling off a triple save in a fierce second half spell of Atlanta pressure, but the Whitecaps just simply couldn’t get their midfield going once again, with a severe lack of creativity a continuing worry.

All in all the better team won and AFTN photographer Tom Ewasiuk (@ResidualImage) was there to capture the action before, during and after the game. Here’s their “Story In Pictures”, with a full Flickr slideshow at the end.

Not a lot had happened, but that quickly changed when Lass Bangoura sent Pity Martinez tumbling in the box in the 27th minute to give Atlanta a penalty

A low crowd of 16,138 was reduced further when Whitecaps supporters continued their 35th minute walkout in protest at the club’s handling of the historic abuse allegations leveled at a former coach of their women’s team

Atlanta looked to increase their lead in the second half but found Maxime Crepeau once again being in fine form in the Vancouver goal

The Whitecaps just couldn’t get much going but substitute Joaquin Ardaiz came close to getting his outstretched foot onto a late Lucas Venuto low cross to the back post. It wasn’t to be and the ‘Caps fell to a 1-0 defeat.
