With the Thanksgiving Weekend approaching, some teams have made it a short week with a couple of mid week matches. Last week produced some movement at the top of the table with the top six all fighting it out against each other while some of the teams in the bottom half were able to make up ground. It seems like we just got started, but already this week we will pass the quarter pole for the season, meaning the promotion race is already approaching its adolescence.

Completely Baseless Predictions - Week 6

Vancouver Greencaps v Rino's Fury
Things are headed straight towards panic stations rather quickly for the Green-men after their 2-1 loss to ten men Chinter last time out. At the top of their list of issues at the minute is the fact that they cannot seem to score goals at all, having netted just four times in five games. Their defense is not stellar, obviously, but it seems as though if they could put the ball in the net on any sort of regular basis that they should be able to start grinding out some results. The next issue, though, is their schedule. They have slumped their way through most of the upper and lower mid-table sides and come away with nothing to their name whatsoever. That is problematic given that leaders GN and Richmond are both still on the horizon. Before those encounters, however, they have two more dates with teams that stand to be mid-table outfits beginning this week against Rino's and then next week against Sierra. The desperation needs to show here for the 'Caps as striking out here could almost be a death sentence. After the heavy hitters they finally get the other struggling sides in NorVan and Santos, but they are already four points back of NorVan, who represent safety at the moment, and if they have another barren month they could well be farther back before that encounter. Rino's started slow themselves but have, as expected, clicked into gear. That being said, they were only able to scrape past the woeful Santos 1-0 last time out, so perhaps things are not quite as tickety-boo as they seem in the Fury's world. Mid-week games tend to produce draws and Greencaps should be willing to bite your hand off for a point if you offer it to them at the minute. Maybe their desperation gets them a result here, but the smart money is on Rino's.

Westside FC A v Richmond Hibernian
Up next in the UBC victory lap is Westside and there is some decent history here. Given the links between these sides, and the fact that they are both in the the top half, this has got to be the MOTW. In their glory days, Westside was a conduit for UBC's budding young stars to have a place to play outside of the college season and this also led to several of those former varsity players choosing to suit up full time for Westside after their college days came to a close. This was long the back bone of Westside's success through their Rino's days in the 90s and then in the early part of the new millennium. The relationship waned and Westside began to struggle, but a few seasons back the relationship with UBC was rekindled and it led to promotion from Div. 1 and then a trip to the Provincial Cup semi-finals the next season. It looked like the good times might well be back again for the Westsiders but somewhere it all crumbled once more, and this time it rather spectacularly led to their immediate relegation. There were talks of UBC wanting more control over the development of their players in the VMSL and to essentially "run their own show" and they finally found that fit when relegated Richmond were willing sellers. So here we now find ourselves as these two sides will meet with many a familiar face on both sides. For example, Zach Karmel, who has chipped in with three goals through "Richmond's" perfect start, was the talisman who led Westside to that run in the Provincial Cup. There are new faces though, such as UBC leading scorers Sebastian Dzikowski and James Graham, who know nothing of the UBC/Westside relationship, but how Westside would love to have them in their colours these days. Instead, these sides will clash in a fixture full on intrigue, if not true competition. "Richmond" look the class of the league and will be favourites every week barring a major reversal in form. That being said, I am sure Westside will give this game everything they have got, so expect a top effort, just maybe not a top result.

VAFC Santos v Westside FC Sierra
It is difficult to know what to read into Santos and their improved performance in only losing 1-0 to Rino's last week. Rumours are that the new partnership with Burnaby Metro on the managerial front has provided some reinforcements, but are these the types of players who can make Santos now competitive at this level week in and week out? Or was last week just a combination of a good day for Santos and a bad day for Rino's (that still produced another Santos loss mind you...)? This week should give us more clarity. Sierra spotted struggling NorVan a two goal lead before roaring back to take all three points. The former Burnaby leaguers are also still somewhat of an enigma at this level, but you would expect them to have more than enough to see off Santos in this one.

NorVan Storm v GN Sporting Club
The taste of defeat is no doubt not sitting well with GN after they were handed their first loss of the season by league leaders UBC last weekend. Fortunately for them NorVan are still stuck in first gear with just one win and four points so far this year, providing the perfect opportunity for a bounce back game. The North Shore boys are all over the board through five games of the campaign. They recovered from a two goal deficit, they have thrown away a two goal lead, they have kept a clean sheet and they have been shutout. Stability seems to be the thing that is really lacking in the Storm's camp, more than attacking or defending necessarily. It is a long trip across two bridges on a long weekend for a team that has a history of laying the occasional egg in GN, so perhaps NorVan can catch them short staffed. All things being equal, however, surely the Surrey/North Delta boys are the favourites here.

Coquitlam Metro Ford Lupi v Club Inter EDC Burnaby B
A trip to the city got Lupi back to winning ways as they bested Strikers 2-1 in a match that saw the two sides come into it in a dead heat in the standings. Lupi are now tied for second place and while their ability to get promoted is still unlikely at best, with big brothers Wolves still rooted to the bottom of the Premier table maybe there is just a little bit of extra motivation in the camp for the Tri-Cities boys at the minute. Of course, Metro Ford got off to a similar barnstorming run during the first half of last season before dropping like a rock once winter hit and they are still to face the other top sides in GN and Richmond. You can only beat the teams in front of you though and, for the most part, Lupi are doing that at the minute. Inter come into this match on the back of two very important wins on the spin against bottom sides Santos and Greencaps. That has given them a six point cushion on relegation and they also got the chance to bang in a few goals. Perhaps this will give them some momentum to carry with them for their trip to Coquitlam but, realistically, those results do little to wallpaper over the serious crack that had shown during their first matches of the season. The man with four names, Andres Mauricio Rojas Rodriguez, has emerged as the talisman for Chinter B and they will need him to continue to produce if they are going to have any hope of getting a result this weekend.

Burnaby Metro Athletic v Vancouver Strikers
Disaster has struck for Burnaby Metro after back to back losses, the latest of which was a 4-2 reversal at the hands of Westside. This has seen the promotion hopefuls sink into a three-way tie for sixth place and the concern now is beginning to become less about the number of points between them and the promotion places and more about the sheer number of teams they are going to need to climb over, especially with games against GN and Richmond still to come. Now, presumably Metro could look at those fixtures as opportunities for "six-pointers" to try and make up some ground on the sides above them, but, given their current for, that does not seem entirely realistic at the minute. Newly promoted Strikers have made hay from a softer schedule to begin the season, though they are coming off a 2-1 loss to Lupi, but that should still buoy them somewhat as they begin to encounter the well-established sides at this level. Evidently Burnaby Lake is not available over the holiday weekend, so Metro have been relocated to Point Grey, which makes this more of a home game for Strikers than them. You would usually expect Burnaby to be the favourites against a newly promoted side but, given the current form of the two teams, I will saw this one is a saw off.

You're predicting CMF Wolves to get relegated from Prem? That's the only way Lupi could go up...

what happens with greencaps if they get relegated? They already have a team in Div 2
That's fine from a league perspective. It's only Prem where you can't have more than one team per club. Functionally though, given their struggles at the minute I wouldn't be surprised to see Greencaps go to just one team again next season, potentially opening up a bonus promotion spot in Div. 2. Then again, their Div. 2 team is looking like potential relegation fodder as well currently which would make that moot.

Folding the two teams into one seems to make the most sense.

They look like they have enough players to field a high end Div 2/bottom third of Div 1 team, but not enough for two. Struggling as a result

God times have changed.

Back in the day, the first signs of cold would guarantee a win over GN Sport. Ironclad. Also, a run of sales on mittens at the local K-Mart counter.

This Week:
GN Sport vs VAFC Santos: GN 7- Santos 0, I will be shocked if Santos show up
Richmond Hibs/UBC vs Norvan Storm: Hibs 4- Norvan Rain Drops 0
Inter Chile vs Burnaby Metro. In the Burnaby derby, BM 2- Inter 1 with 2 red cards
Westside Sierra vs Greencaps: WS 4- Greencaps 0... men against old men in this one
MOTW Vancouver Strikers vs Westside FC A: After their big point last week behind some solid coaching I see Westside winning this one 3-2
Rinos Fury vs Metro Ford Lupi. Metro Ford has one good team in the top two flights of the VMSL and it is the Lupi, I see them dropping 5 on Rino Fuzz

It would seem that Richmond are invincible no longer, though they remain undefeated and in first place. After the first blemish on their record, will it signal an opportunity for other teams to have a go at them? Or will they continue to lead the way comfortably leaving the other sides to fight it out for the second promotion place? Time will tell...

Completely Baseless Predictions - Week 7

GN Sporting v VAFC Santos
The performances of the latest iteration of Santos seem to have improved. They are still losing, but it seems that they are at least competitive as it has been back to back 1-0 losses. Evidently the new relationship with Burnaby Metro management has supplied a handful of players that can at least put in a shift at this level. A trek to Delta on a miserable Friday night though should be a true test of whatever improvement they may or may not have made. GN got back to winning ways after their loss to UBC, though it almost all came tumbling down after they took a 3-0 lead, only hanging on for a 3-2 win over an average at best NorVan group. The change in seasons and weather may well be having its stereotypical effect on the GN boys and for anybody else I would likely suggest that they are ripe for the taking this week. However, Santos are hardly "anybody else" and I very much doubt this will be where they pick up they first point or points of the campaign.

Richmond Hibernian v NorVan Storm
After their draw with Westside took the shine off their perfect season, UBC will be looking to get back to winning ways straight away. Fortunately, NorVan are mired near the bottom of the league and should be a fairly straightforward task for the juggernaut UBCers. "Richmond" will host this game on their third different campus based field, though it seems they have secured a home at UBC through at least the end of November. The issue for NorVan is that they a prone to giving up early goal. Other than their lone win of the season, they have scored first just one time. Trying to play catch up against UBC is a recipe for disaster and if NorVan go behind early this one is all but surely lights out. With the league's leading goal scorer Seb Dzikowski having rediscovered his scoring touch against Westside, the odds are fairly good that UBC will bang one in here, making it an uphill fight for the Storm.

Club Inter EDC Burnaby B v Burnaby Metro Athletic
It was back to regularly scheduled programming for Chinter after they took care of business against the two bottom teams in the league. Their six points gives them an early cushion on relegation, which is really the only realistic aim for this group. That being said, their performance in a 1-0 loss to Lupi was surely encouraging internally, so maybe the former Chileans will fancy their chances against Burnaby Metro. Metro avoided another disastrous result when they got all three points in a 1-0 against Strikers to keep them realistically still in the promotion hunt. The biggest issue for Burnaby, though, is that they still have games looming against UBC and GN and they will likely need to get something out of those matches. If they drop further points between now and those games, though, it may all be moot. They need this result, but Inter will not just let them have it. Look for a spirited affair between local rivals in this one, but Metro's desperation should carry the day.

Westside FC Sierra v Vancouver Greencaps
There was only a single goal in it for Sierra in their win over bottom side Santos. Now they host the team second from bottom in Greencaps, who earned their first point of the season in a 2-2 with Rino's last week. Despite the difference in the current places in the the table of these two sides, this one looks well matched. Certainly it would appear set to be a cagey affair, with neither side clattering in the goals so far this season. The have been 15 goals scored between these two through 12 games, which does not exactly scream entertainment to the casual observer. Greencaps have been woeful to begin the season and even if they overachieved last season and have lost some pieces, one still has to think they are better than their record thus far. Sierra are favourites here, but only just and expect Greencaps to put in a solid effort now that they have finally got off the mark for the season.

Vancouver Strikers v Westside FC A
In a week where all the top six are playing teams from the bottom six, this is likely the closes we will get to a true MOTW. Strikers took advantage of a softer early schedule to put up three wins on the spin, but now they have lost two straight after a 1-0 loss to Burnaby Metro. Westside are coming in on a high after being the first side this season to get anything off "Richmond" when they tied 1-1 last week, a result that leaves the Westsiders well poised as they head into a stretch of games against the teams in the bottom half of the table. They will need to hold their nerve though if they want to be considered true promotion contenders, as even one slip could be catastrophic to their chances. Strikers certainly present a challenge, and will likely want to get the better of their local rivals from up the street in Point Grey. It has been the offense that has got the job done to this point for Strikers with last years leading goal scorer from their promotion winning side, Bryan Da Cruz, having already found the net three times at this higher level, while Gavin Lytton leads the team this season with five goals in six games. That being said, the strength of schedule comes into play again as the newly promoted boys have only managed a single goal in their two recent losses. Look for Westside to flex their muscles, and experience at this level, in this one.

Rino's Fury v Coquitlam Metro Ford Lupi
Given that it is top half against bottom half, it stands to reason that the top teams will not go six for six. That being said, looking at the schedule, it is tough to see where the bottom six might get a result. Usually Rino's would be a fairly safe bet for an upset as they begin to rumble to life part way through the season. However, their two most recent results against the bottom two sides produced a narrow 1-0 win over Santos and then they granted Greencaps a first point of the season in 2-2 draw. Lupi, meanwhile, are flying high having five wins and just a lone loss to begin the season. Rino's can never be totally written off, but something just is not clicking at the minute for the Vancouver boys. Look for Lupi to take advantage on Sunday.

No outright upsets for the bottom six against the top six last week, but a trio of draws, including Santos stunning GN has narrowed things considerably at the top of the league. It is almost the same recipe this week with four of the top sides against four of the bottom sides so we will see if there is any further movement at the top.

Completely Baseless Predictions - Week 8

Westside FC A v NorVan Storm
It was a wild win for the Westsiders with all sorts of goals being scored in their 5-4 game last week with Strikers. It is both the most goals Westside has scored in a match and the most they have allowed from a group that is usually involved in lower scoring affairs. NorVan, meanwhile, took it on the chin last week against UBC who were in the mood to issue a statement after dropping their first points of the year in a 1-1 with Westside the week before. That statement ended up reaching the tune of 6-0 as "Richmond" padded their league best goals for. While Westside are not the same juggernaught by any means, they are floating around at the top of the table while the North Shore boys are mired at the bottom. NorVan are bleeding goals as beyond the thumping from UBC, they have given up three goals in each of the three matches leading up to that one. Westside are clear favourites, though it should not be nearly as lopsided this week from a NorVan perspective, though who knows, maybe Westside have figured out how to score goals.

VAFC Santos v Richmond Hibernian
There has been steady progress made by Santos since their latest merger with Burnaby Metro. Back to back narrow 1-0 losses and then they earned their first point in a stunning 1-1 with GN last weekend. Unfortunately, just as they seem to be building some momentum, the free scoring league leaders are on the docket. This is the last thing that Santos need. It should be a stats day here for the likes of Golden Boot leader Sebastian Dzikowski et al. On the plus side for Santos, based on current form they should be able to keep it below double digits, which you might not have bet on a month ago.

Vancouver Greencaps v GN Sporting
What on earth happened to GN last week? A draw with last place Santos has dealt a strong blow to the Surrey/Delta crew's promotion hopes. Perhaps it was the classic cold weather GN from years past given that it was a miserable Friday night. Whatever the case Sporting get somewhat of a do over against second bottom Greencaps this week. That being said, the Irish lads have picked up back to back draws against mid-table sides Rino's and Sierra, so you would not fancy them to be a total push over. Certainly confidence was eroded in GN slightly with that last result, but they still have to be favourites going into this match based on the records of the two sides alone.

Vancouver Strikers v Club Inter EDC Burnaby B
After three losses on the spin, newly promoted Strikers have fallen from the lofty heights at the top of the table to a comfortable mid-table seventh. While back to back promotions was never likely for an older group of more casual players, they are still finding ways to compete at this level and certainly to score goals. Even in a loss this week they mustered four tallies, which will of course be enough to win most weeks. Strikers have taken care of business against the teams below them in the table and you would expect that to leave on the right side of the relegation line come the final tally, likely with decent room to spare. Chinter beat the two bottom feeders but have snapped back to reality with a pair of loses in which they were shutout. This should be a decent match up, but with Strikers at home on their smaller Jericho pitch and given their ability to find the net, I see them taking the points in this one.

Burnaby Metro Athletic v Rino's Fury
Given this is another week of mostly top against bottom match ups, we'll make this one the MOTW. Rino's continue to confound, squeaking one out against Santos, giving Greencaps their first points of the year and then posting a solid 2-2 with second place Coquitlam last week. The consummate Division 1 stalwarts, Rino's have clearly fully embraced the mantle passed onto them by relegated Binger's Army as they can beat anyone, or drop points to anyone, on any given day, regardless of the positioning in the table of the two sides. That fact should slightly worry Burnaby Metro. Consistency has eluded Metro this season, but have recently bounced back from a pair of losses with back to back clean sheet victories over Strikers and Chinter. Perhaps this points to Metro, as they did last season, having refocused and recommitted to their goal of promotion. Or maybe not. This will be a good test as Rino's will be more than happy to take the points off them and deal a hammer blow to their promotion hopes. In an interesting twist, Farivar Torabi, the leading scorer for Rino's Tigers in Premier, has surfaced as well as the coach of his former team Burnaby Metro. It will certainly be interesting to see him lined up with Rino's on Friday and then against them, at least in the technical area, on Sunday. This game is a toss up, Burnaby are likely slight favourites, but this seems like one of those gut-feel, classic Rino's wins. I'll split the difference and call it a draw.

Coquitlam Metro Ford Lupi v Westside Sierra
The rigors of Division 1 have certainly set in for Sierra, especially after they were held to a 1-1 draw against second bottom Greencaps last week. So far their results against the teams above them in the table have been mixed at best. Yes, they edged past "clubmates" Westside 1-0 in Week 2, but lost out to both Richmond and GN. There other wins have been just as narrow with a late winner against third bottom NorVan and a narrow 1-0 draw against Santos. Dicipline also seems to be an issue as Pablo Clinaz is the latest Sierra player to pop up on the naughty list and rumour has it the team concedes a large amount of penalty kicks, which would appear to be backed up by several of the match reports. All in all it points to a team very much still finding its feet at this level. It looks like they can definitely compete, but can they hold their nerve in the big moments of the match? Many a promoted side have had to run a similar gauntlet. They now face a trip to Coquitlam to take on another side above them in the table, Lupi. The Tri City boys were handed their second speed bump of the season when they were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw with Rino's last week. It would seem that Coquitlam are tidy at the back, but do not necessarily produce a ton going forward, which often leaves their opponent hanging around an would make for some nervy ends to matches. They should have enough to get past Sierra in this one, but the Burnaby based side will be hopefully that Metro Ford do indeed let them hang around and possibly knick a result at the death. This is the only match up between two sides from the top half, so it sets up as a decent affair, but I think Lupi are clearly the favourites.
