Went along to watch Campo v Inter. Definitely a far more organised Campo side that what I saw earlier in season. Soccer Coach has done well there, and some well known old faces back too. Defence looks better, although they did give up 5 going on 10. Biggest problem is they have nothing up front to take the pressure off their backline. New GK (I think). He was good.

Here's all the goals and some other highlights

You could be 6 for 6 this weekend. Rino’s v CMF will be interesting. Kindel sits for a suspension and Rino’s scoring like fiends again. Could be a long night for the Coquitlam lads..

Clearly things will all be to play for in 2019 as nothing pertaining to either the title race or the Provincial Cup places has remotely been determined as of yet. We come into the final round of fixtures before the Winter Break with just four points separating the top seven teams. At the bottom the second relegation place is also totally in flux and will need to be sorted out down the stretch. Plenty then for everyone to play for and all sides will be hoping to head into the holidays feeling extra festive with three big points tucked in their pockets!

Completely Baseless Predictions - Week 15

Croatia v Campo Atletico
New/old coach, same result for Campo who are now 0-0-2 following their regime change and have yet to score a goal under recently reappointed manager Eduardo Azmitia. While shape and structure have shown improvement, it is still clearly a work in progress, as evidenced by their 5-0 mauling at the hands of Inter last weekend. Making matters worse for Campo was the fact that Richmond won their game against NorVan, moving them onto nine points with Guildford. As those two sides are still scheduled to meet head to head, it will now take a minimum of 10 points to have even a chance of survival, though, more than likely, it will require at least 12 points. That translates to Campo needing to win half of their remaining eight games. Certainly a tall order, however, they do have all four of the other bottom teams on the schedule come 2019. So not impossible, but surely Azmitia is focused on laying the foundations for a successful structure moving forward, likely into Division 1. Croatia need the points to keep pace at the top and should have momentum after knocking off first place West Van 1-0 last week. They certainly cannot afford to be the test case that sees Campo get their mojo going and, in truth, their offense could really use with a stats day. Chances are Campo will manage at least a point somewhere along the way, but I don't think it will be this week.

Rovers Tigers v Richmond Hibernian
While CCB currently sit atop the table, what last weeks results really did was pave the way for Rovers to move into pole position to defend their title when they play their make up games. After their 2-0 win over local rivals Pegasus, Rovers sit only four points out of first place and still hold two games in hand. Richmond on the other hand scored a massive result when they beat NorVan last week. The 3-0 victory halted a run of five losses in a row and moves them level with the other main relegation candidate, Guildford. The Surrey side seem to be currently experiencing a downturn in form, meaning that survival is likely to be fully up for grabs come the New Year. This week, while another haul of points would no doubt be welcome, the boys from below sea level will likely feel as though they are heading into the holidays on a high no matter what. Still, they will likely be keen to improve upon the 7-0 hammering they took the first time these sides met. I would not expect Rovers to be in a festive, giving mood though, as their games in hand mean nothing if they toss aside points and fall out of touching distance before they ever get to cash them in.

CCB LFC v Club Inter EDC
And so the prophecy was fulfilled... CCB and their allegedly expensively assembled band of hired guns now sit atop the VMSL standings following their 2-0 defeat of Coquitlam, combined with Croatia beating West Van. While Rovers have the ability to pass CCB of their own volition, CCB too have their fate in their own hands as another win against their local rivals come the reverse fixture would put them in the drivers seat to win the league. It has been an impressive run from the Surrey crew who have now stretched their winning run to five on the spin while they are now unbeaten in their last seven games. Next up is a spicy encounter with Inter who played them to a 1-1 stalemate during their first meeting. Inter took the piss out of the "revamped" Campo last weekend, putting up a 5-0 win and only being denied further offensive success by some inspired goalkeeping. Mohammed Habib registered at hat trick which bodes well for the Italian-Chileans as they have only managed a single win without him scoring this season. If Habib is in form than it should present a compelling showdown between opposing strikers as his opposite number, former Inter man Milad Mehrabi, should be leading the line for CCB. The real battle though is between the supporting casts and, at least on paper, this would appear to be where the home side have the edge. Former Vic West and VIU Mariner Victor Blasco is in scintillating form; he's up to seven goals for the season and has scored in four straight outings. Inter will need to be able to counter CCB's second wave if they are to have any chance of taking all the points. It should be a cracker of a match, with both teams going for it, but CCB have to be favourite given their depth of squad and the fact that they have fought their way to the top of the table.

West Van v Pegasus
The North Shore boys found their stay at the top of the table a short one as they were deposed after losing to Croatia 1-0 last week. They will be looking for an immediate bounce back when they welcome ninth place Pegasus to Ambleside on Saturday. While this season can hardly be considered anything close to a success to this point for Peg, their form has improved of late. Notwithstanding their 2-0 defeat to local rivals Rovers last week, the Surrey boys had picked up seven points over the four matches preceding that game, easily their best form of the season to date. Ironically, despite their woeful start to the campaign, Peg actually earned their first point of the year when they held West Van to a draw during the first meeting between these two teams. West Van cannot afford a similar slip up this time around if they are serious about their title aspirations. Irrespective of Peg's former pedigree and weapons, the former Trollers will need to assert their dominance over a lower table team and ensure that they come away with the win this week.

Rino's Tigers v Coquitlam Metro Ford
This one is the MOTW and is sure to be a compelling fixture. Rino's have emerged from their recent struggles to take advantage of a pair of relegation threatened teams in Richmond and Guildford, with the resulting points lifting them back into the title conversation as they currently sit in second place, just one point behind leaders CCB. They also seem to have kicked their offense back into gear, putting up a combined 11 goals in their two wins, including posting a 7-3 win over Guildford last week. The concerning aspect, from a Rino's point of view, is that they are still conceding goals. Both Richmond and Guildford put three past them, including scoring early in the game. Coquitlam boast the best defensive record in the league, so conceding early again this week is likely to be a recipe for disaster. Metro Ford are coming off a closely contested loss to now leaders CCB, who got by them 2-0. However, both goals were scored very late, one in the final minute and one in injury time. The Tri-Cities boys were also without talisman and leading scorer Carlo Basso, but he will be available this week after serving his suspension. Veteran defender, and former Whitecap, Steve Kindel, though, is out this week based on yellow card accumulation. Metro Ford could also sit on 28 points, level with Rino's if they were to win their game in hand, however that is easier said than done given it is against defending champions Rovers. All in all this sets up as a fascinating encounter. Rino's are traditionally able to score their way out of trouble, however, CMF simply do not concede goals. Rino's had their way with Coquitlam in their first meeting, thrashing them 5-0, a scoreline that accounts for more than a third of Metro Ford's 13 goals against on the year. I can't see that happening again this time around. Look for a close, low scoring game and I have to think that will favour the home side. It's a toss up for sure, but I am going to give Coquitlam the edge based on their defensive prowess and Rino's recently inability to keep the ball out of their own net!

NorVan v Guildford
A game that could have very interesting effects on the relegation race here. NorVan were well off the pace in losing 3-0 to relegation threatened Richmond last weekend, however, Guildford have seemingly gone over the edge of a cliff. The Surrey side banged off three crucial wins against fellow lower table sides to move out of the drop zone and followed that up with a pair of hotly contested 1-0 losses to heavy hitters Inter and Coquitlam. It seemed as though the newly promoted outfit had got their feet under them and were looking to be favourite to beat the drop down the stretch. Unfortunately, they then forfeited their next match against CCB before returning last week to get blasted 7-3 by Rino's. The worse news for the Guildford camp is that Richmond knocked off NorVan last week to move level with them on nine points. That being said, NorVan seem to have fallen off the form that saw them beat their fellow promoted side 2-0 back when these two met at the end of September. This would be an ideal fixture for Guildford to be targeting points from and, in their previous form they would likely be good value for it, now, however, it seems they are in a state of disarray. In fact, it is likely NorVan who are now looking at this fixture to get back on track after going winless over their last five outings. It all depends what type of Guildford team shows up for this one. If it is the team that clinically knocked of their relegation rivals and then proceeded to play like a side that belongs at this level, they should have every chance of picking up more crucial points against a NorVan side that appear to be on cruise control at the moment. Based on recent form though, it is difficult to get behind that idea, so look for NorVan to come away with the win in this one.

Croatia hit the top after beating Campo 2-0 tonight.

Match between CCB and Inter was called off when one of the linos didn't turn up! Shocking!

Metro Ford took the lead after about 70 seconds and could have been 3 or 4 up by the 15th minute, but then Rino's equalised around the 20 minute mark, and the Wolves let the Tigers take over. They left it late but an Erik Edwardson double gave them a deserved win. Here's the goals and some more.

West Vancouver 2 - Campo Atletico 0

Or The Resurrection of a Club With Humble Beginnings

Or The Forgotten Benefits of The CAT System

Or The parallels of the legend of Pegasus and Campo Players.

Bellerophon, a Greek hero, wanted to fly up to Mount Olympus to meet the great Gods that reside there and take his rightful place. Zeus took notice of Bellerophon's attempts to reach Mt. Olympus, and sent a demon to bite Pegasus and hinder Bellerophon from reaching the heavens. Even after Pegasus was bit, and Bellerophon fell back down to the earth, Pegasus continued the mighty journey to the heavens, and in doing so was rewarded by becoming the helper of the Gods.

Darkness slowly starts to fall on Ambleside, and engulfs us second by second.

Cold air chokes our lungs and freezes our bodies. The anticipation of another crushing defeat is felt in our bones.

West Vancouver players emerge from their locker room. They are tall and proud. They seem to be sure of their task in hand, namely, another bludgeoning of the moribund Campo Atletico.

The historic 17-1 is in our minds and their minds too. You can see the hunger in their eyes.

As we walk towards the field, we see their logo. We see in the large banner their Lion, Crown, and the year 1920. All of them remind us of their noble heritage. A club that represents the British Properties and surrounding areas and all that it entitles.

For us it is the opposite. Our club was founded only a few years ago. The inspiration of two teenager friends with a devotion for football. The humble origins of the club started in a basement.

The replandescent Quetzal from the Mesoamericans is in our logo. The bird who has been silent since the arrival of the monarchical powers. The elders say that the Quetzal has promised not to sing again until the lands in this continent are truly free and equal.

As we walk to the bench, a player reminds us: “This is where all started”. Indeed, his memory is correct. Five players and a coach on the field today used to train and play on the exact same field for the now defunct CAT team. It has been a true Odyssey the journey from CAT to Premier. Perhaps this a posthumous testament for the merits of the CAT system.

The hesitation in the ranks is palpable. We have an unusual combination of veterans and young lads who have not seen the intensity and brutal demand that a Premier team can inflict.

The traumatic loss is lurking in the shadows that surround the field. Just waiting to once more devour our team and perhaps finish the club once and for all. This is our last hope to avoid the destruction of the club. Another crushing defeat in this game and the team withdraws from Premier. It is now or never again.

The whistle blows, and the balls rolls with excitement. As planned, we retreat to our end.

A clear foul on the second minute of the game. Miroslavic raises the yellow card. There is no argument over the decision. The overwhelming pressure has taken a toll in some of our younger players. The free kick is well taken and the ball over the crossbar. We can normally breath with relief.

West Vancouver can not find direct entry entry into the area. They switch to long balls. The very first one confuses our defender and midfielder. A player is free. He controls the ball with ease and passes it back to the incoming player who shoots well from the top of the box. A deflection and our keeper is only able to make minimal contact with the ball. The first goal has come in the six minute of the game. It seems that another miserable game is on the horizon.

But strength and anger come from this goal and their confident celebration. West Van can not generate another clear opportunity. If anything, we have a couple of good chances. The first one is denied by the assistant referee who called an inexistent offside. The second one a free kick just outside of the penalty box. The ball is traveling towards the net but a brave West Van players jumps and the ball hits his face. The game stops for his recovery.

The 30th minute of the game saw their second goal. A corner kick followed by a superb volley.

Once again a bit of an error on the marking, but this does not take away the supreme technique. A fine example of the quality of players in West Van.

West Vaan tries to assert its superiority but it is all in vain. Half time comes and the veterans motivate the young ones. Sometimes harshly, sometimes with more tact. Experience matters in a soccer field. The deed is done.

The second half was an entertaining and exciting match with no goals in both sides. The way it should have been in the first half as the errors are corrected.

Miroslavic signals the end of the game. He did very well. No issues with him. Perhaps just the offside call is the only thing to reproach to the linesman as this would have changed the outcome, but as we know, it is part of the game.

Campo Atletico has come back from its deathbed. The surviving players embrace despite the loss as they know that the club was just a few minutes from folding. The captain has saved the team on and off the field, and he lies exhausted on the field of battle. Victorious.

As sometimes surviving and existing is a victory in itself.

As for the moral of the story. Follow your dreams and ambitions. Do not despair on the setbacks. Have hope even in the darkest hour. Any humble team can go from Division 3 to Premier (without paying players). You can play Bronze and Silver, but you can end playing in Premier. It is possible as long as you love the game, as our Campo players have proven one more time that the unthinkable is possible.

Will you and your team be the next Pegasus? Any team can face the most wealthy and established teams with their noble lineage.

What's the Peg story? I've always known them to be a powerhouse ever since getting mauled at Bear Creek park in my first Premier league outing back in the day.(their National championship year)

Always admired the hunger and determination of the "other clubs" to make it to the Premier league ranks. First one of the teams to break in to the top division was Club Ireland...from my recollection anyways. Then Campo and Guildford. Other teams had good goes of it and just fell short including Cliff Ave and Rino's Fury and a couple more at least.

There will only ever be one Pegasus

I understand that there is a Premier Team with the name of Pegasus. I do not know if its history resembles the one of Pegasus or what is supposed to mean. The story of Pegasus is the story of perseverance, loss, pain, vanity, betrayal, victory against overwhelming odds, and desire to reach higher levels even when the rest tells you that this is imposible.

I can tell you that this story applies to many of the players and administrators both in the field and real life, and hence lies my admiration for them. Many of them started in CAT or Division 3 coming from Silver or even Bronze. Many have been the rejects of other teams/clubs. Over the years the team has played with bravery against more power nemesis like the Tigers, the true Rinos, Shaheen, Norvan, West Vancouver, and many others. There have been crushing defeats and glorious wins. Players and administrators have shed blood and tears for this club. There have been internals fights, betrayals, and painful altercations and departures. But also there has been forgiveness, reconciliation, and recognition for one anothers strengths and weaknesses.

We have to give credit to Ben, Cusano, Alfredo, Toni, Chis, Claudio, and many others for the epic journey. For the players too, like Derver, Castro, Guedes, Pablito, Paraic, Joey, Roberto, Mario, Boye's brothers, and the list goes on.

As the story of Pegasus who loses Bellorophon , there is departures after epic wins from players, administrators, and coaches, including yours truly. In the last instance, the club was essentially saved by Nick, though he does not want recognition.

To me there story of the journey of the club can be very inspiring for others and to some degree is part of the unique folklore of the VMSL.
Does the FVSL, VISL, and BMSL have similar stories? I do not think so. I know that there are other teams in the VMSL with similar unique histories, and I hope that it gives them impetus to push for Premier (i.e. Greencaps, Burnaby Athletic, Astro, Strikers, and even Bingers, etc)

Campo is really the story of survival against overwhelming odds. The story of crushing defeats that eventually lead to victories. The story of human limitations, rebellious impertinence, overconfident vanity, mistakes, transformation, forgiveness and eventual redemption and resurrection.

As someone said, some much more has been written about this team in TTP than any other, but it is because it has captured the drama of human life.
