WFC2 v Arizona United – The Story In Pictures (and words!)

WFC2 are on a bit of a roll in USL, extending their current unbeaten streak to three matches after back to back home wins. The latest came on Sunday at Thunderbird Stadium with a very comfortable 2-0 win over Arizona United, in a match that saw them produce 19 shots.

The wins sees the Whitecaps (3-4-3; 12 points) move to within one point of Arizona in 9th place in the USL Western Conference standings and within two points of the playoff places after ten games.

Whereas BC Place hasn’t exactly been a home fortress for the Whitecaps this season, Thunderbird Stadium has been different, with WFC2 now unbeaten in their five matches there so far this year.

The ‘Caps started nine MLS players in the game, with captain Tyler Rosenlund and winger Victor Blasco being the only exceptions. They also started four Canadians, after the CSA gave them a special exemption to play less than the mandatory six starters.

It wasn’t the most exciting first half. Vancouver tried to take the game to Arizona but as with the first team, putting away those chances was proving difficult.

The Whitecaps turned up the pressure at the start of the second and Caleb Clarke showed quick reaction four minutes in to tuck away a rebound after Arizona keeper Carl Woszcynski had done well to keep out a Kianze Froese shot from the edge of the box. The goal was Clarke’s fourth of the season and his second straight game with a goal.

Vancouver had several chances to add a second and were in control of the match. They finally got their second killer goal with 12 minutes of the game remaining.

It came from Brett Levis and was the Saskatoon native’s first professional goal. And what a beauty it was too as the midfielder won possession at the half way line and skipped past two Arizona players before burying it in the bottom right corner of the net.

There was no way back for Arizona and the young Caps go marching on. Next up are two away matches in four days. Colorado Springs are first up on Wednesday followed by a trip to OKC Energy on Saturday.

AFTN photographer Tom Ewasiuk was there to capture all the action before, during and after the game and here’s his “Story In Pictures”, with a full Flickr slideshow at the end.

Loving these articles, keep them coming. It's about the only place to get WFC2 news.

Good to see so many 1st team guys in the mix, that's partially what the squad is there for. So that being said:

~How did Nico Mezquida look?
~How Rodriguez look? Hoping to see him in Wednesday, and hoping going forward it is Kah getting the WFC2 assignments.
~Did Ben draw in?
~Is it only a matter of time before we see Victor Blasco in the show?

Last year, these assignments would not have been possible. Personally, I am hoping to see Rodriguez take his spot, and keep it. I'd also like to see Ben and Caleb get a shot playing in the 1st team. Clarke now with a few goals may be a good selection, as you always want to ride a hot hand. Couldn't hurt to give Rivero some real competition for his minutes, God knows it isn't coming from Hurtado or Mattocks.

Speaking of which, Hurtado is notoriously absent from these games. What's the scoop? Has he been refusing the opportunity to play, or is it now obvious he's become so redundant that they don't even want to waste USL minutes on him?

Regarding Hurtado, excellent question... there's a guy who would benefit most playing in these games...

I work out at Fortius in Burnaby, and have seen Tiebert and Hurtado and some other guy with a broken or injured foot in a cast working out with the trainers. This was while the caps were on the road......

Looks like the injured guys come their to train so my guess is Hurtado has some type of injury.

No under armour arm sleeve was seen...

Mezquida wasn't as good as I would have expected. Seems to be an issue with him. He's shite hot in training but can't bring it in games.

Considering all the goalscoring issues, Clarke has to get a look soon, although I keep thinking that about Earnshaw. Three in three for Clarke now though.

McKendry had slow start to year but has got better week upon week.

As for Hurtado, he had an injury but is ok now. No-one's saying why he's not playing USL but Robbo has said he leaves it up to individual players. Read into that what you will.
