Drama in BC Provincial B Cup as favourites Burnaby Metro Athletic kicked out

It was a week of drama in the 2017 BC Provincial B Cup, both on and off the pitch.

With the Keith Millar Cup semi-finals seemingly all set for this coming weekend, after four hard fought quarter-final match ups, word broke on Sunday night that Fraser Valley Red Devils were launching an appeal with regards to their 2-0 loss to VMSL Division 2A champions, and our cup favourites, Burnaby Metro Athletic.

The appeal was in respect of Burnaby Metro Athletic fielding an ineligible player. One who had also been registered with a Division 4 team in the FVSL and who had just happened to have played against the Red Devils in a Bradner Cup game. The player in question had been sent off in that match, so was easily recognised by the Fraser Valley side.

The BC Soccer Protest Panel met to discuss the situation on Monday and after reviewing the evidence, kicked Burnaby Metro Athletic out of this year’s B Cup, reinstating Fraser Valley Red Devils, who will now advance to the semi-finals.

AFTN reached out to BC Soccer for comment and they issued us the following statement:

** A formal protest was submitted on the basis that the Burnaby Metro Athletic had an illegal/ineligible player on their roster. Allegedly this player had registered for more than one team at the same time. As soon as a player registers for more than one team, they become an illegal player for both teams.

Upon review of all of the evidence presented to them, the Protest Panel determined that he was registered to both teams at once, and therefore was an illegal player.

As per BC Soccer Adult Competitions Rules and Regulations, 3. A) iii) and the BC Soccer Rules and Regulations, 25 i); any team proven to have played an ineligible player in a competition shall be disqualified from further participation in the competition. **

A tough way for any team, let alone one of the favourites to lift the trophy, to go out of a competition, and it’s not known yet who the player is, if the club was aware of the situation, or how this may affect their VMSL Division 2A title.

It’s been a strange competition for the Burnaby side from the start, with their first round opponents, BMSL side Bacardi FC, being forced to forfeit their match with them after a player’s wedding clashed with the date the game was meant to be played and no switch of dates could be agreed.

Burnaby Metro had won their quarter-final tie with the Red Devils with little problem on Saturday afternoon at Burnaby Lake. In a game of few real goalscoring chances, Burnaby Metro were the better side throughout, taking a 42nd minute lead when the Fraser Valley goalkeeper couldn’t hold on to a shot from distance, and the ball went through his hands and over the line.

Former Whitecap Navid Mashinchi wrapped things up for Burnaby Metro Athletic three minutes from full time for the 2-0 victory. Or so they thought.

You can see our highlights of the match that never was below!

With one the clear favourites now out of the competition, all of the last four teams will fancy their chances of lifting the Keith Millar Cup on May 28th.

Given a second chance, Fraser Valley Red Devils will now face another tough challenge in their semi-final on Saturday in VMSL Division 2 Cup champions NVFC Norvan Storm.

The North Van side came through a close battle with BMSL champs Sierra FC in their quarter-final on Sunday, coming away with a 2-1 victory.

That semi-final takes place at Burnaby Lake on Saturday afternoon with a 2.30pm kick off. The second semi-final takes place at Burnaby Lake on Sunday morning, with FVSL side Poco FC Royals taking on the in-form VMSL team Vancouver Greencaps at 9.45am.

The Greencaps saw off another FVSL side in the quarter-finals on Saturday, getting past Fraser Valley Blue Devils 3-1. Poco needed penalties to beat VMSL team FC Serbia United, winning 5-4 after the game was tied at 0-0 after 120 minutes.

Our money’s on an all-VMSL final, but it’s been a strange competition this year, so who knows what other twists lie in store.

Burnaby had little problems with Fraser Valley but only beat them 2-0 and one was a distant shot that squeaked through the keepers hands?

FVRD rarely threatened. Burnaby defence wasn't troubled. Was just a matter of time of them getting goals. Burnaby weren't creating too much themselves but you always felt they had it in the bag. Or I did anyway!

The player in question didn't even get on the field. And from what I hear the Burnaby coach had no idea his player was registered in the FVSL. I have a feeling he won't be welcomed back next year by Burnaby.

How does Bradner Cup work? FVSL site shows a Div 4 version and a Div 1-3 version. How did a Div 4 team play vs a Div 2 team?

The language in the rules contradicts itself some what. Key word being PLAYED.

Is there a more through explanation of the rule. As it reads here specifically if the player didnt actually "PLAY" how can it be enforced?

It was actually a FVSL Presidents Cup match (FVRD vs Kora FC). This is a "Div 2 Cup" that is open to all teams in div 2, 3, and 4. The team that wins this cup earns 1 of the FVSL 5 provincial spots.

The player in questions played vs us in the Presidents cup and was very noticeable (pretty decent- good player; received a yellow; got in a minor pushing match; scored a PK; and finally took a straight red card for going up behind one of our players and kicking him in his legs when he did not have the ball and was not looking in the 80th min). This is how we recognized him so easily. You don't forget someone like that (especially in the same season).

It is what it is. You can say that the manager "did not know anything about him playing for another team" or not. Who knows maybe that is true, but, I find it hard to believe. They screwed over Bacardi in the previous round by not cooperating with what seems to be reasonable requests from Bacardi. The soccer gods were angered. They cheated technically the entire season and finally got caught by the only team that would have ever been able to catch them... coincidence ?

I do feel bad for their team as a whole as it was not their fault. However, no remorse for the player in question as he knew what he was doing. There are many other things that he and his manager said over the course of this last week that I could add that make this thing almost comical but I'll leave to the imagination.

Cheers and good luck to everyone remaining in this dram filled cup.

@RRegatta, thanks for the clarification. If the player was playing with multiple teams which is clearly against the rules, then you are right to notify the associations and he should be punished. It is unfortunate for the rest of the Burnaby Metro players that they go down with him, but the blame falls squarely on the cheater's shoulders and he's the only one that they should be mad at, not the FVRD team who caught him cheating.

@akslop, I would think "play" includes being on the roster and available for selection.

I would think so to but they should change the language and clarify it in my opinion.

For argument and to be stupid about this lets say its the law and you go to court over it. What the Legal definition of the word "Played" . I would think to have played you would have to have actually participated and factored in the outcome.

Look at a back up goalie in hockey. He doesn't get a stat credit with having "Played" if he sits on the bench and watches the game right.

True to a certain extent....but roster depth itself is important in a match.

Agree it could be clearer....

LOL.

I asked Mini Dude about a girl he went on a date with last week; #11 was the result. "I got totally played!"

Actual quote.
