With the chance to vote less than two weeks away, I'm becoming more and more uncertain about the looming outcome. Initially I imagined the 'YES' vote would largely outnumber the nay-sayers, however in recent weeks it seems both the bid committee and mayor's office is becoming frightened of the 'NO' camp.

As such, I invite everyone (regardless of whether you actually live in the City of Vancouver or not -- but limited to those living in the Lower Mainland) to simply vote on the official ballot question:

"Do you support or do you oppose the City of Vancouver's participation in hosting the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic Winter Games?"

I encourage you all to vote prior to reading (or posting) any comments below. Further official information regarding the plebiscite can be found at the City of Vancouver's Olympic Vote Process Website.

Thanks.

I get the feeling right now that people are starting to get excited about the possibility of hosting- and preparing- for hosting these games. I was originally concerned about the vote, but now I'm thinking it will actually be a strong enough "yes" vote to encourage IOC officials to give us their vote.

Of course, I voted "no".;)

This poll here looks like a total landside until you figure in how many of those that have voted so far can actually vote in the real one (3 I think)

Thank the heavens I'm eligible for the TTP plebiscite. Otherwise, my voice wouldn't be heard.

You're an angel, Regs. Live long and prosper.

In my mind the 2010 games are ours to give away. Foolish antics such as holding this "senseless" vote clearly demonstrate our inability as possibly the most beautiful city in the world to also become one of the most dynamic.

Capture the moment...go big or go home!

2010...YES guy!!!!:D

Like Rain on your Wedding Day

Listening to CKNW today, they were advertising that they would be providing complete coverage of the Olympic Plebiscite on the 22nd, and getting immediate reaction from both the “Yes and No Camps”.

Then it struck me: who is the “No” camp, anyhow? I’m firmly on the yes side, so I haven’t really been taking not of the names of the main group, or groups, who are opposed to the Olympics. I think most casual observers know that the “Yes” side includes such heavy hitters as Gordon Campbell, Larry Campbell, Jim Green, Mike Harcourt, Jean Cretien, Jim Patterson, Wayne Gretzky, Arthur Griffiths…the list goes on and on.

This is a pretty wide spectrum. Obviously, there is some private money that has gone into promoting the Yes vote, but more than that- and most significantly- the cost of promoting the Yes vote is mostly government subsidized in one form or another. Weather it is by direct advertising, press conferences, or through the media, the bulk of the advertising is done by people funded or paid by one of three levels of the government.

This is great! Finally, the socialist system is going to work for me! The socialists, of all parties, have monopolized the airwaves to create such a positive spin on the vote, and there is little to no blitz coming from the No side. Obviously, this is because the NO people aren’t well funded, and they are reduced to working the talk show circuit, which inevitably is reduced to an open ended debate.

In the words of our favorite resident phsyco-bi-sexual-stinky-socialist-promoting-capatalist-benefitting-tree-hugger Alannis Morrisette: Isn’t it Ironic? :D

I wonder how many people have actually thought about the issues before they blindly abide the wishes of the creme de la creme.

issues...

the negatives or the issues were ALL we talked about in the leadup and during the process of selection.

so many people worried about things that turned out to be completely not worth worrying about.

In fact, our media was negative most of the time and it was great to see sydney silence so many critics.Plenty of information and discussion was on all the time.

It's nice to know that what applies to Sydney equally applies to Vancouver. They are the same, after all.

Quite a fair call Keeps. Sydney is better.

Talking to vancouverites when i was over there i found that the concerns were nearly the same.

transport, native(aboriginal) issues, environment issues and the ridiculous belief that "they should spend the money elsewhere"(like they would) are examples.

hmmm

Just bout to head out to the polls. They say we need a 75% vote to show the IOC, but i think it's gonna be more like 60/40 yes. BUt it's all up to the IOC now.

Well said. I can't believe that we're going to shite the bed and give these Olympics away to Salzburg, all because the infinitely wise Larry Campbell wanted to make himself look good by holding this fukcing plebiscite!
This from the same brilliant mind who came up with the idea to re-instate photo-radar for the purpose of combating street racing. Not a bad idea I guess......if the province hadn't already sold all the photo-radar equipment!! IDIOT!

64% for the yes.

That should satisfy the IOC. Hopefully the next vote goes Vancouvers way to.

Lots of Room for Cheating Today

Did my civic duty today and voted in the Olympic Plebisit (sp.)

Went in to vote and signed the card and showed my I.D., but my name was not scratched off any voters list, all they did was take the signed card.

I could have gone to every voting station in the city and signed a card and voted Yes or No.

Yes that would be dishonest, but it could be done.

Hope that the numbers from the vote are correct and no cheating took place.

Hope we get the Olympics with the 64%, it would be great for the city, province and country.

64% is a very average result. Not bad, but not overwhelming either.

In the end, however, I think Vancouver will win over the IOC members on the strength of its massage parlors, not the plebiscite result.
