2016 BC Provincial Cup kicks off this weekend as draw throws up some potentially cracking cup ties
The 2016 BC Provincial Cup gets underway this weekend with eight Preliminary Round matches taking place across the lower mainland and Vancouver Island in the Keith Millar Cup (the B Cup), with action in the A Cup getting underway next weekend.
This year’s Finals will be played on Saturday May 14th at Westhills Stadium in Langford, Victoria and last week’s draw threw up some potentially cracking A and B Cup match-ups.
AFTN will be out and about and bringing you the best Provincial Cup coverage from every round of both competitions again this year. Or continuing to be a curse on poor Rino’s Fury who have lost three straight first round matches with us in attendance! The jinx has to be broken one year, right?!
The draw for the A Cup was certainly interesting. Of the eight first round matches, two will be all-VISL (Vancouver Island Soccer League) affairs, with two all-VMSL (Vancouver Metro Soccer League) ties and one all-FVSL (Fraser Valley Soccer League) encounter.
One of the tastiest looking ties is the repeat of the VMSL Imperial Cup final between winners, and also VMSL Premier Champions, Coquitlam Metro-Ford Wolves and West Van. Can the Wolves do the treble?
There’s also a repeat of the VISL Jackson Cup between Cowichan and Bays United. Cowichan won that one with two extra time goals in a 2-0 win, and the islanders should play out one of the ties of the first round.
Like Metro-Ford, Langley United are looking for the treble, having already added the Pakenham Cup to their 2015/16 FVSL UPL title. They kick off their campaign with a tough all-FVSL home clash against Aldergrove United, who finished third in the UPL this season, five points back of Langley.
Last year’s A Cup champs, EDC Burnaby, finished 9th in the VMSL Premier standings this season and didn’t qualify for this year’s tournament. We say this every year, but it would be nice for the defending champions to get an automatic spot, as opposed to the league they play in getting an extra spot.

With last year’s B Cup Champions, Guildford FC, also gaining promotion to VMSL Division 1, there will be new champions crowned this year.
VMSL Division 2B Champions Rino’s Fury, FVSL Division 2 Champions Westcoast FC United, Burnaby First Division champs Mundiavocat, Richmond Champions AC Richmond, and VISL Vic West Casuals all received byes to the first round, avoiding preliminary round match-ups this weekend.
Both 2014 Champions South Burnaby Fighting Irish, and 2012 and 2013 champs Richmond All Blacks, finished second in their respective divisions and will be in action on Saturday, in two of the best matches from the preliminary round.
The Irish host FVSL Division 2 runners-up Langley United Sparta at Burnaby Lake at 5pm, while the All-Blacks travel to VMSL side Harps FC, kicking off at 6pm at Memorial South.
