The Island Games will serve as the CPL’s 2020 regular season, with the winner crowned league champions and awarded the North Star Shield. The winner of The Island Games will also qualify for the 2021 Concacaf League.
The format of The Island Games breaks down like this:
- An opening group stage (28 games) where every team will play each other once. The top four teams advance to a second round-robin group.
- A second group stage (six games) where every team will play each other once. The top two teams advance to the finals.
- A winner-take-all, one-match finale with the North Star Shield at stake.
I was aware...
The most interesting thing I read is that of all the guys playing League 1 Ontario in 2019, only one solitary player was signed to a pro contract across the entire CPL in 2020.
So much for a development pathway... Certainly doesn't bode well for the proposed L1BC
Instead of approaching VMSL, FVSL, and VISL and asking those for a partnership in creating BC 1 League where top teams from those 3 leagues would compete, BC Soccer is saying that it is not preferred path (to deal with existing leagues, clubs, teams) and lists quite a few reasons of which none make a lot of sense to me (page 4 of the document; link posted below).
BC Soccer is obviously looking for wealthy individuals (owners) to create new L1BC teams but that then contradicts the main “objective” of L1BC:
“A specific quantified objective within BC Soccer’s 2016-2019 strategic plan is to “Introduce a professionally administrated adult amateur soccer league…” (page 1 of the document).
A professionally administered adult amateur soccer league!? So, professionally administered amateur league which logically implies that the players cannot be paid (but BC Soccer “professional administration, of course, can).
If that is the case, why then look for specific owners/operators (obviously gearing toward privately owned new clubs)? We all know that some players are being paid under the table playing in current “amateur soccer leagues” so good luck forming that L1BC where new amateur soccer league would be professionally administered! What would really be different from, let's say, current VMSL Premier League? Direct BC Soccer's "profesional administration"!?
Again, instead of approaching VMSL, FVSL, and VISL to join in a creation of L1BC and adding a top league where teams from multiple soccer leagues would compete, BC Soccer is trying to invent a hot water.
What would be wrong if top 4 teams from VMSL Premier League, 2 from FVSL, and 2 from VISL would be invited to inaugural L1BC (if it is ever created)?
Another step would be to create combined Division 1 (from multiple leagues), Division 2, etc. and finally have all those leagues under one league/umbrella.
That would be a step in a positive direction. That could work. That could be a path to a better development (continuation from Youth Leagues) and to CPL. That would make a sense, in my opinion.

@YoAdrian , any additional comments?I’m surprised TSS not trying to take all the credit for Jordan Haynes and Zach Verhoven playing for Pacific yesterday.
Oh wait, they always love to.
Both played one season (three months) of PDL with them one summer.
The way these jokers carry on you’d think they coached them since they were 5 years old or something ♂
