IMPERIAL CUP – QUARTER-FINALS

The 4 Imperial Cup quarter-finals were played this past weekend with 3 games ending in predictable scores, while one rather major upset took place as the Punjab Hurricanes sent the Richmond FC Hibernians packing by defeating the heavy favourites by a 2-1 score. Despite the fact that the other 3 games did not produce any upsets, the scores were very close as the underdogs—Sapperton Rovers, Westside FC, and West Van FC—made life somewhat miserable for the favourites—Surrey United, ICST Pegasus, and Metro-Ford.

ICST PEGASUS - WESTSIDE FC 4-3: On Friday evening, at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey, the red-hot ICST Pegasus disposed of the visiting Westside FC by a narrow 4-3 margin, a victory that advances Pegasus to the quarter-finals of the Imperial Cup. The home team came flying out of the starting gate and created numerous scoring chances in the early going. In particular, Azad Palani came close to opening the scoring in the early going as he hit the woodwork twice in rapid succession, once on a header and once on a right-footed shot. Palani was finally rewarded at the 15th minute mark when he raced in on goal on a partial breakaway—after having been set up by Niko Marcina—and struck a well-placed left-footed shot off the far post and into the net for the game’s opening goal. A few minutes later, Pegasus added its second goal of the match when a brilliantly-placed diagonal ball by Paul Bahia found Andrew Reed in full stride down the left flank. Reed then proceeded to square the ball to Omari Aldridge who easily beat goalkeeper Rowan Anders from very close range. At this point the Pegasus lads seemed to take their foot off the pedal while the Westsiders appeared to find their legs and got back into the match. The visitors narrowed the margin at the 30th minute mark when Jay Kent-Hume sent Sebastian Crema on a breakaway, an opportunity that Crema was able to finish brilliantly. Westside FC continued to press and got the equalizer at about the 35th minute mark when central defender Graeme Webber blasted a loose ball into the net from close range. However, Pegasus regained the lead just before the halftime whistle after Diaz Kambere had done some outstanding work down the right flank. Rowan Anders was able to save the first shot by Jag Gill but Azad Palani pounced on the rebound and calmly slotted it home. The second half was more or less a carbon copy of the first, with both teams taking turns attacking and defending. Pegasus was able to add to its lead at the 60th minute mark when Niko Marcina fired a wicked shot directly into the net from an awkward angle, catching Rowan Anders off guard as he was probably expecting a cross. Once again the Westsiders refused to give up and almost found their 3rd goal when Sebastian Crema was unlucky to see his close-range chip shot bounce off the crossbar. However, at the 85th minute mark, Westside FC was able to narrow the margin when Brian Reems was fouled inside the penalty area by Pegasus’ goalkeeper Andy Singh. John Stonehocker had no difficulty in converting the ensuing penalty kick, making things very interesting for the remainder of the match. With Westside FC trying desperately to score the equalizer during the last 5 minutes, ICST Pegasus counter-attacked very effectively and came close to extending their lead on a couple of occasions. However, Goldy Takhar hit the crossbar from close range, while young Sahil Sandhu’s shot was saved by Rowan Anders. All in all, a very entertaining and exciting match, played by two very skilled and tenacious teams!! Defensively, Westside’s Sam Wallace and Graeme Webber performed remarkably well, while midfielder Wyatt Seddon-Johnstone and forward Sebastian Crema also turned in excellent performances. For the winning Pegasus team, fullbacks Andrew Reed and Diaz Kambere were outstanding throughout the match, while midfielders Niko Marcina and Adam Costley controlled the middle of the park with poise, skill, and tenacity. Forward Azad Palani continued his recent torrid scoring pace, netting his 10th goal in his last 9 games! The victory advances ICST Pegasus to the semi-finals of the Imperial Cup where they’ll face the Coquitlam Metro-Ford Wolves. On the other hand, Westside’s chances to qualify for the Provincial Cup playdowns diminished enormously as a result of the Imperial Cup loss.

SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS - SAPPERTON ROVERS 2-1 PK’s: On Saturday, at Cloverdale Athletic Park in Surrey, the defending Imperial Cup champions—Surrey United—edged the underdog Sapperton Rovers on penalty kicks after 120 minutes of play—including overtime—could not produce a winner. The strong wind played a huge part in the game and the Firefighters, with the wind at their backs in the first half, took the game to the visitors in the initial part of the game. In the 9th minute, Surrey United came close to opening the scoring when a fine cross by fullback Mason Webb found Angus Burke in the middle of the box. However, the league’s leading marksman was unable to finish the golden goalscoring opportunity as he hit his shot just wide of the target. Although the Firemen enjoyed a large advantage in terms of possession, some excellent defensive play by Sapperton’s Jeff Rogers, Brayden Volkenant, and Rhys Volkenant denied the free-scoring Premier Division champions any real scoring chances. In fact, Surrey United had to wait until the 31st minute mark for another opportunity but Sapperton goalkeeper—Garth Lagasse—made a spectacular save to turn a Rizal Ganief free-kick around the post. From the resulting corner-kick—taken by former Whitecap Steve Kindel—the ball found striker Ryan Reynolds who lifted his shot just over the cross bar. Surrey United finally broke the deadlock in the 68th minute with a brilliantly-executed play that saw Rizal Ganief take a first-time pass from Mason Webb before launching a superlative cross into the danger area where Angus Burke volleyed the ball into the Sapperton net. At this point, the Rovers were forced to change their defensive strategy and started applying pressure on the Surrey United defense. However, efforts by Jason Pierotti and Mark McQuade went awry and the score remained 1-0 in Surrey United’s favour until the dying seconds of regulation time. With only about a minute left, a long throw-in by Jason Pierotti was redirected towards the Surrey United goal by goalkeeper Garth Lagasse and eventually slammed into the net by defender Jeff Rogers for the last-gasp equalizer. Both teams traded chances in the overtime, but the game remained deadlocked and had to be settled by the dreaded penalty-kick shoot-out. Surrey United’s goalkeeper—Paul Shepherd—rose to the occasion in the shoot-out as he made two excellent saves on shots by Brayden Volkenant and Jason Pierotti to secure the Firefighters’ hard-earned victory. Surrey United will now face the upstart Punjab Hurricanes in the semi-finals of the Imperial Cup. The match is scheduled for Sunday, March 20 at Cloverdale Athletic Park, starting at 2:00 p.m. The Sapperton Rovers, on the other hand, will now shift their concentration towards league play as they’re trying desperately to avoid relegation.

PUNJAB HURRICANES - RICHMOND FC HIBERNIANS 2-1: Also on Saturday, at Minoru Park in Richmond, the struggling Punjab Hurricanes surprisingly qualified for the Provincial Cup playdowns as a result of an upset 2-1 victory over the Richmond Hibernians. The Hurricanes almost took the early lead at the 12th minute mark but Richmond’s goalkeeper—Matt Clayton—pulled off a magnificent save off a Gary Badesha free-kick from the edge of the penalty area. The next 30 minutes of play proved to be an even battle, with neither team taking control of the match. However, the Hurricanes’s Bobby Jhutty had a couple of goalscoring opportunities but missed the net on the first one and was stymied by Matt Clayton on his second attempt. At the 40th minute mark, the Punjab Hurricanes finally took the lead when Amar Bains’ shot—after he had received a nifty pass from Bobby Jhutty—was inadvertently deflected into his own net by Marcus Brougham. Just before the halftime whistle, Richmond FC knotted the score in similar fashion when Brad Caldwell’s shot was redirected into his own net by Punjab’s Joey Brar. It should be mentioned that Caldwell had made a fantastic run towards the Hurricanes’ goal, beat a few defenders before unleashing the shot that was subsequently deflected into the net for the tying goal. The Hibernians got off to a great start in the second half and almost took the lead when substitute midfielder Alex Orasa beat 3 defenders before setting up Brad Caldwell with an immaculate pass. Unfortunately for Richmond FC, Caldwell’s shot barely missed the target, with goalkeeper Sheldon Steenhuis well-beaten. The Hurricanes replied in kind and, at the 64th minute mark, came close to taking the lead when a shot by Bobby Jhutty hit the crossbar. Shortly thereafter, at the 72nd minute mark, Jhutty once again missed a golden opportunity as he watched agonizingly as his shot grazed the crossbar after he had been sent on a breakaway by Rupi Birring. With only a few minutes remaining in regulation time, the Hurricanes took the lead with Bobby Jhutty once again involved in the play. On this occasion, Jhutty won the ball in the middle of the park, beat a couple of Richmond defenders on his way towards goal, and then slipped a brilliant pass to Ryan Dhillon who raced in all alone and easily slotted the ball into the back of the net for the winning goal. However, 3 minutes into stoppage time, the Hibernians almost tied things up when Brad Caldwell’s wicked drive was brilliantly saved by Sheldon Steenhuis. As luck would have it, the Hurricanes counter-attacked immediately thereafter and came very close to scoring what would have been the insurance marker when Bobby Jhutty hit the goalpost with his curling shot and Ryan Dhillon missed a sitter on the subsequent rebound. As mentioned earlier, the Punjab Hurricanes qualify for the Imperial Cup semi-finals—and the Provincial Cup playdowns—as a result of the hard-earned victory. The Richmond FC Hibernians have also qualified for the Province Cup, through the Premier Division standings.

COQUITLAM METRO-FORD WOLVES - WEST VAN FC 2-0: The final Imperial Cup quarter-final match was played on Saturday at Charles Best School in Coquitlam and featured two of the top teams in the VMSL Premier Division: the hosting Metro-Ford Wolves and the visiting West Van FC. After an exciting and evenly-played 90 minutes of non-stop action, the Wolves walked away with a hard-earned 2-0 victory, thus eliminating the former Trollers from further Imperial Cup action. Both teams exchanged numerous goalscoring opportunities, with the visitors having their best chances in the first half while the Wolves replied in kind in the final 45 minutes. Early in the game, West Van’s Carl O’Connor hit the woodwork on two separate occasions, while teammate Kevin Crouch also came close to scoring but was thwarted by some excellent goalkeeping on the part of Lucas Menz. At the other end of the pitch, the Wolves also had a glorious opportunity to open the scoring midway through the first half, but former Whitecap Alfredo Valente—after having received a clever pass from Russel Huggon—rang his shot off the goalpost. At about the 70th minute mark, Metro-Ford took the lead when Alfredo Valente and Oliver Heald combined to set up a streaking Ian Clarke down the right flank. The veteran Clarke sped away from the West Van defenders before neatly placing the ball into the back of the net, past a bewildered Marco Durante. Shortly thereafter, Metro-Ford goalkeeper Lucas Menz was forced to leave the field due to a shoulder injury, allowing youth call-up Brando Ciccone to make his first senior appearance of the season. Ciccone then proceeded to make a phenomenal save on a point-blank shot by Jesse Fetterley to preserve his team’s slim lead. With about 5 minutes to go in the contest, Alfredo Valente gained possession of the ball in the middle of the park, noticed that goalkeeper Marco Durante was standing at the top of his penalty area, and proceeded to sail the ball over the helpless goalkeeper from at least 40 yards for the Wolves’ insurance marker. Metro-Ford centre backs Kyle Jones and Matt Besuschko were towers of strength throughout the contest, while midfielder Jovan Blagojevic made a successful return from injury as a second half substitute as he drove the West Van defenders to distraction with his speed and skill. For West Van, a pair of veterans—midfielder Mike Dodd and defender Trevor Short—turned in remarkable performances while Leo Nash was rock-solid in the middle of the defensive unit. The hard-fought victory advances the Wolves to the semi-finals of the Imperial Cup where they will face the red-hot ICST Pegasus. The match is scheduled for Sunday, March 20 at Coquitlam Town Centre, starting at 5:00 p.m.

PREMIER DIVISION

DAY 24

COLUMBUS FC - DELTA UNITED 2-2: On Wednesday evening, at Vancouver Technical School, two of the top teams in the VMSL’s Premier Division—Columbus FC and Delta United—settled for a 2-2 tie, thus diminishing both teams’ chances of finishing in third place in the standings. The visiting Delta team got off to a flying start and took the lead at the 4th minute mark when Phil Lensky worked his way down the right flank before crossing the ball into the Columbus penalty area where Gibson Bardsley clinically headed it home for the go-ahead goal. Soon thereafter—at about the 15th minute mark—Delta United doubled its lead with Phil Lensky once again being a major contributor. On this occasion, Lensky set up Sunny Bains with an impeccable right-wing pass, a pass that Bains one-timed into the back of the Columbus net from the edge of the penalty area. The ‘Italians’ fought back tenaciously and almost narrowed the margin on a couple of occasions but Delta goalkeeper Steve London came up with two phenomenal saves on shots by Steve Frazao to keep his team in a 2-goal lead till the halftime whistle. Very early in the second half, Columbus FC finally narrowed the margin when Steve DeBlasio took advantage of a Delta defensive blunder, raced in all alone and clinically beat an onrushing Steve London for Columbus’ all-important first goal. Despite the fact that Columbus continued attacking, the visitors maintained their 2-1 lead until the very late stages of the contest. With about 5 minutes left, Delta’s Gibson Bardsley—who had scored his team’s initial goal—went from hero to goat as he was sent off the field of play for having received his second caution of the match. Then, well into added time, Columbus was finally able to knot the score when Blair Robertson’s wicked shot was first saved by Steve London and then handled by Delta’s Mark Gomes. On the ensuing penalty kick, Steve DeBlasio made no mistake, thus earning his team the well-deserved tie. Needless to say, Columbus’ Steve DeBlasio was outstanding in his forward position as he scored both his team’s goals and also created numerous other opportunities. Substitutes Sheu Fortunato and Leigh Sembaluk also performed admirably in the midfield roles. For Delta United, midfielders Oscar Jimenez and Phil Lensky, as well as defender Brian Fowler, also deserve special mention for their excellent performances. As mentioned earlier, the result helps neither team’s chances of catching third place Richmond FC.

WESTSIDE FC - AKAL FC 3-1: Also on Wednesday evening, at the newly-opened South Memorial Park in Vancouver, Westside FC kept its hopes of qualifying for the Provincial Cup playdowns alive by defeating the visiting Akal FC by a 3-1 margin. The Westsiders came close to opening the score early in the match when Sebastian Crema unleashed a wicked free kick from well outside the penalty area, only to have the ball strike the underside of the crossbar and, subsequently, the goal line. Westside FC kept pressing and finally took the lead at the 20th minute mark when Indy Khabra set up Sebastian Crema with an immaculate square ball, a pass that Crema easily tapped into the empty net for the game’s initial goal. To their credit, the visitors didn’t give up and fought hard for the remainder of the first half in an effort to score the equalizing goal. Early in the second half—at about the 55th minute mark—Akal FC was able to knot the score when Hussein Abu brilliantly headed home a well-struck corner kick by Desmond Tachie. That appeared to be the wake-up call that the Westsiders needed as they once again took over the reins of the match in search of the all-important go-ahead goal. At the 75th minute mark, Sebastian Crema became the provider as he set up Jay Kent-Hume with a clever pass well inside the Akal penalty area. Without a moment’s hesitation, Kent-Hume blasted the ball into the net for what proved to be the winning goal. The insurance marker came shortly thereafter with the ‘Man-of-the-Match’—Sebastian Crema—scoring on a blistering long-range drive to the top corner of the Akal net. Defender Sam Wallace, midfielder Michael Buree, and forward Sebastian Crema played extremely well for Westside FC as they led their team to the all-important victory. As mentioned earlier, the 3 points keep Westside FC’s hopes of qualifying for the Provincial Cup alive, while Akal FC has now been officially relegated to Division 1 as a result of the loss.

ICST PEGASUS - COQUITLAM METRO-FORD WOLVES 3-2: The third Wednesday evening game was played at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey and resulted in a 3-2 upset victory by the Pegasus lads over the visiting Metro-Ford Wolves, a result that officially knocked the Wolves out of contention for the Premier Division title. The home team came flying out of the starting blocks and narrowly missed several goalscoring chances before taking an early 2-0 lead with both goals coming from breakaway opportunities. Azad Palani, Sahil Sandhu, and Jag Gill all came very close to scoring very early in the match, but their clear-cut chances all went awry. The first goal was scored at the 15th minute mark by Niko Marcina as he was sent in on goal by an exquisite Diaz Kambere pass. A few minutes later, it was Azad Palani’s turn to race towards the Metro-Ford goal, this time on a great set-up by Jag Gill. In his own inimitable way, Palani blasted the ball past goalkeeper Lucas Menz for Pegasus’ second goal. Shortly before the halftime break, the Wolves bounced back and narrowed the margin when Andrew Veer calmly converted an Oliver Heald corner kick by slotting the ball home from close range. Midway through the second half, Metro-Ford came close the knotting the score when veterans Oliver Heald and Russel Huggon combined to set up Sang Hwang. Unfortunately for the Wolves, Hwang’s shot brushed the outside of the goalpost, with Pegasus’ goalkeeper—Amar Dhinsa—well-beaten. At about the 70th minute mark, Pegasus restored its 2-goal lead as Niko Marcina scored his second goal of the match, this time on a well-placed penalty kick. The spot shot was awarded when young defender Paul Clerc handled the ball inside the Metro-Ford penalty area. The visitors, however, replied in kind and once again narrowed the margin at about the 75th minute mark when Oliver Heald neatly chipped the ball over the Pegasus defense onto the path of a streaking Russel Huggon who made no mistake in firing the ball home from close range. The last 15 minutes of the match proved to be very interesting—although scoreless—as the Wolves applied enormous pressure on the Pegasus defence in search of the equalizer. However, with Metro-Ford frantically pressing forward, Pegasus also had a couple of glorious chances to put the game out of reach but counter-attacks efforts by Jag Gill and Ryan Powell both went awry—the first saved brilliantly by Lucas Menz and the second missing the net by mere inches. Pegasus’ backline—comprised of Paul Bahia, Diaz Kambere, Gurjit Dhaliwal, and Lavy Mangat—did extremely well in keeping the dangerous Metro-Ford attackers at bay for most of the game. Midfielders Niko Marcina and Adam Costley also played extremely well, while forwards Jag Gill and Azad Palani drove the young Coquitlam defenders to distraction with their pace and skill. For the Wolves, veteran midfielder Oliver Heald was outstanding throughout the contest, while young goalkeeper Lucas Menz had to be sharp on several occasions, especially in the first half. The victory improves Pegasus’ record to 11-4-9, good for 6th place in the VMSL Premier Division standings, while Metro-Ford remains in second place with 50 points from 24 games. It should be noted that both teams have qualified for the Provincial Cup playdowns.

ICSF INTER - SERBIAN WHITE EAGLES 3-0: The fourth, and final, Wednesday evening match was played at Andy Livingstone Park in Vancouver and featured ICSF Inter and the already relegated Serbian White Eagles. Needless to say, the ‘Italians’ controlled the play for most of the 90 minutes and walked away with a rather easy 3-0 victory. The White Eagles resorted to a defensive tactic and relied on counter-attacks for their lone goalscoring opportunities. Early in the match, veteran Sasa Vucenovic missed a clear header for the Serbians, while Dalibor Plavsic sailed a couple of shots wide of the net. Otherwise, some solid defending on the part of Inter’s Robert Hall, Ryan Zahjaria, and Milos Jeftic thwarted the quick Serbian forwards and made life relatively easy for goalkeeper Dennis Kindel as he gathered the shutout. Inter’s first goal was scored late in the first half by midfielder Colin Streckmann with a lethal strike from 30 yards out. Very early in the second half, forward Liam Miller added the insurance marker to Inter’s tally as he capitalized on a goalmouth scramble, after Sheldin Maistry had inexplicably missed a golden opportunity to score from close range. At about the 80th minute mark, Inter’s Colin Streckmann was fouled inside the White Eagles’ penalty area, resulting in a penalty kick being awarded. On the ensuing spot shot, Milos Jeftic rounded out the scoring by calmly placing the ball in the back of the Serbian net. Midfielders Colin Streckmann and Joseph Marrello controlled the middle of the park for Inter, while young Luigi Pantusa was a going concern all game long on the left flank. For the White Eagles, defender Miso Rakita, midfielder Stefan Kalaba, and forward Sasa Vucenovic played very well, albeit in a losing cause. It should be noted that Inter’s chances of qualifying for the Provincial Cup playdowns have immensely improved as a result of the victory.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: PUNJAB HURRICANES for their remarkable upset victory over the heavily-favoured Richmond FC Hibernians in the Imperial Cup quarter-finals. The Hurricanes, who are still in danger of getting relegated from the Premier Division, thus qualified for the Imperial Cup semi-finals and, also, for the Provincial Cup playdowns. Led by the incredible performance of young midfielder Bobby Jhutty, the Hurricanes fully deserved their narrow victory over the Hibernians.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: ICST Pegasus’ forward AZAD PALANI for his superlative performances in his team’s 2 victories this past week. On Wednesday evening, Pegasus defeated the heavily-favoured Metro-Ford Wolves by a 3-2 score in a regular league game, while on Friday evening, they knocked Westside FC out of the Imperial Cup by beating them by a 4-3 margin. On both occasions, Azad Palani was instrumental in his team’s victories as he scored 3 brilliant goals. For his outstanding performances this past week, AZAD PALANI will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2011-04-07.

IMPERIAL CUP – SEMI-FINALS

The 2 Imperial Cup semi-finals were played this past weekend with Surrey United and the red-hot ICST Pegasus advancing to the final by virtue of a couple of narrow victories, against the Punjab Hurricanes and the Metro-Ford Wolves respectively. The final will be held at Cloverdale Athletic Park on Sunday, March 27 with kick-off slated for 3:30 p.m.

ICST PEGASUS - METRO-FORD WOLVES 2-1: On Saturday early evening, at Coquitlam Town Centre, the high-flying ICST Pegasus defeated the Metro-Ford Wolves by a narrow, but well-deserved, 2-1 margin. The Wolves got off to a bright start and were rewarded for their fine play at the 20th minute mark when young Jovan Blagojevic headed home a marvellous cross from Alfredo Valente. At this point, however, the home team inexplicably relinquished the reins of the match as the visitors started to take control of the proceedings. Very early in the second half, Pegasus knotted the score when young Sahil Sandhu collected the ball on the left flank, strolled by a flat-footed Metro-Ford defender and proceeded to chip the ball over the head of goalkeeper Brando Ciccone from close range. The underdog visitors continued to exhibit a lot of passion and tenacity and came close to taking the lead shortly thereafter, but Omari Aldridge watched agonizingly as his shot hit the woodwork as he raced in on goal on a breakaway. Pegasus was finally rewarded with what proved to be the winning goal at the 15th minute mark. On this occasion, midfielder Niko Marcina set up fullback Andrew Reed on the right flank with a nifty pass. Reed’s subsequent low shot found the back of the Metro-Ford net at the far post, giving Ciccone no chance whatsoever. The Pegasus lad continued to press and could easily have added to their margin but some excellent goalkeeping on the part of 17-year old Ciccone—as well as some poor finishing—kept the scoreline unaltered till the final whistle. In particular, Jag Gill and Azad Palani both barely missed the net with close-range headers, while Sahil Sandhu was a constant threat to the Metro-Ford defenders, using his incredible pace and skill to full advantage. Late in the match, at about the 89th minute mark, the Wolves came close to tying things up but Russel Huggon’s shot narrowly missed the net. Also, Pegasus goalkeeper Amar Dhinsa had to be very alert on a couple of occasions as he punched away a couple of dangerous crosses by Alfredo Valente and Andrew Veer. As mentioned earlier, Sahil Sandhu drove the Metro-Ford defenders to distraction, particularly during the second half, with his speed and amazing skill. Also, midfielders Adam Costley and Niko Marcina were rock-solid in the middle of the park while the Pegasus backline—comprised of Andrew Reed, Diaz Kambere, Paul Bahia, and Deep Toor—shut down the vaunted Metro-Ford attackers for most of the match. The well-earned victory earns ICST Pegasus a spot in the Imperial Cup final against the Surrey United Firefighters. The match will be held on Sunday, March 27 at Cloverdale Athletic Park, starting at 3:30 p.m.

SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS - PUNJAB HURRICANES 2-0 OT: On Saturday, at Cloverdale Athletic Park in Surrey, the defending Imperial Cup champions—Surrey United—edged the underdog Punjab Hurricanes by a 2-0 margin, by scoring 2 goals late goals in the second overtime period. Very early in the contest, at about the 8th minute mark, Surrey United came very close to opening the scoring when a fine cross by Rizal Ganief found Angus Burke in the middle of the penalty area. However, the league’s leading goalscorer was denied his glorious opportunity by Sheldon Steenhuis’ fabulous save. Late in the first half, Steenhuis made another fantastic save as he dove across the goal line to palm away a well-struck free kick by Rizal Ganief. In the second half, the Firefighters inserted player-coach Niall Thompson on the forward line and the veteran caused the Punjab defenders a lot of problems with his determination and skill. In fact, had it not been for some excellent goalkeeping on the part of Steenhuis, Thompson could easily have scored a couple of goals in the early part of the second half. At the other end of the pitch, the Hurricanes also had a few excellent goalscoring chances as the game opened up considerably, with both teams trying hard to score the all-important opening goal. At the 65th mark, Punjab’s Bobby Jhutty had a great opportunity to give the Hurricanes the lead but fired his shot just over the crossbar from inside the penalty area. Shortly thereafter, Jhutty’s seemingly lethal free kick from the edge of the 18-yard box was saved brilliantly by goalkeeper Paul Shepherd. Late in regulation time, the Hurricanes once again came very close to scoring, but on this occasion Joey Brar’s header—from a well-taken corner by Gary Badesha—was cleared off the line by defender Brad Peetom. In the first overtime period, both teams threw caution to the wind in a desperate effort to take the all-important lead. Surrey United had an excellent chance to open the scoring when Niall Thompson set up young Jordan Whitehead, whose subsequent shot was saved by Sheldon Steenhuis. The Hurricanes replied in kind as Ravi Jammu volleyed the ball towards the Surrey United net from close range, only to have Paul Shepherd pull off yet another brilliant save. Midway through the second overtime period, the Firefighters finally took the lead when Vinny Stewart created an opportunity for Niall Thompson, an opportunity that the veteran forward converted into the winning goal by slotting the ball into the far post of the Punjab net. With time running out, and with the Hurricanes pressing furiously forward in search of the equalizer, Surrey United’s Rizal Ganief notched the insurance marker by slamming the ball into the net from an awkward angle, after having received the ball from Angus Burke’s throw-in. Needless to say, both goalkeepers—Surrey’s Paul Shepherd and Punjab’s Sheldon Steenhuis—played extremely well as they both pulled off some miraculous saves during the 120 minutes of play. Surrey United’s defender Brad Peetom and midfielder Ryan Reynolds should also be mentioned for their excellent performances. For the Hurricanes, defenders Joey Brar and Daniel Badesha turned in superlative efforts, albeit in a losing cause. The Firefighters thus qualify for the Imperial Cup final, against ICST Pegasus.

PREMIER DIVISION

DAY 25

SAPPERTON ROVERS - DELTA UNITED 1-0: On Sunday, at John Oliver Park in Delta, the desperate Sapperton Rovers kept their hopes of avoiding relegation alive by defeating the heavily-favoured home team by a slim 1-0 margin, thus ending Delta United’s chances of finishing in third place in the Premier Division standings. The home squad got off to a great start and came close to taking the lead on a few occasions but Sapperton’s goalkeeper—Garth Lagasse—rose to the occasions and pulled off a few remarkable saves to keep the favourites off the scoresheet. In particular, at the 20th minute mark, a well-taken free kick by Harpreet Khakh was brilliantly saved by Lagasse. Despite the fact that Delta United carried most of the play and retained most of the possession, it was Sapperton that took the lead at about the 42nd minute mark when Colin Phillips and Jason Pierotti played a clever give-and-go that was eventually finished off by Phillips as he clinically slotted the ball past goalkeeper Drew Smiley. Just before the halftime whistle, Delta United almost tied things up but Phil Lensky’s shot just went wide of the net, with Lagasse well beaten. Early in the second half, the Rovers almost added to their lead with a couple of great goalscoring opportunities, but Delta’s goalkeeper—Drew Smiley—pulled off a couple of excellent saves on shots by Omid Ahmadi and Jay Gangnes. The home team replied in kind and came close to knotting the score at the 57th minute mark but Garrett Peters’ wicked drive sailed just wide of the Sapperton net. Delta United kept pushing forward in search of the equalizer, but some excellent defending on the part of Sven Wagner, Jeff Rogers, Brayden Volkenant, and Rhys Volkenant kept the Rovers in the lead till the final whistle. Despite the loss, Delta’s midfielders Oscar Jimenez and Phil Lensky played extremely well, as did veteran defender Woody Bradford. For the winners, midfielder Colin Phillips once again turned in a superlative performance as he led his team to victory with his indomitable work rate and fine-tuned skills.

WESTSIDE FC - SERBIAN WHITE EAGLES 6-0: Also on Sunday, at Burnaby Lake West Complex, Westside FC clobbered the already relegated Serbian White Eagles by a 6-0 margin. In so doing, the Westsiders remained in contention for the last Provincial Cup spot as they will now face ICSF Inter—in their last league game of the season—to decide which of the two teams will enter the coveted competition. Westside FC dictated the pace of the match from the opening whistle and the end result was a fair reflection of the game. After a frustrating initial 25 minutes, Westside FC finally took the lead when Michael Buree drove a low ball towards the near post, where Jay Kent-Hume neatly slotted it home for what proved to be the winning goal. From that point onward, the goalscoring opportunities and goals became easier for the Westsiders and they quickly added to their lead when veteran Chris Mehuys found the back of the net, on yet another impeccable low cross from Buree. Then, just before the halftime whistle, Brian Reems made it 3-0 by calmly slotting a left-foot shot past the Serbian goalkeeper. Early in the second half, Andre` Herath scored Westside’s fourth goal after having received a great pass from Anthony Doran. The fifth and sixth goals followed shortly thereafter, both on headers by Joe Bhegani and defender Andrew Czalij respectively. Midfielder Michael Buree was dangerous throughout the contest, setting up no less than three goals, while Indy Khabra and Anthony Doran also turned in excellent performances in the middle of the park. Despite the loss, the White Eagles’ Nemanja Okuka and Mladen Ljumovic performed admirably during the entire 90 minutes.

WEST VAN FC - AKAL FC 7-0: The third Sunday game was played at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey and resulted in an emphatic 7-0 victory for the visiting West Van FC over the struggling—and already relegated—Akal FC. The former Trollers took the early lead at the 5th minute mark when defender Leo Nash converted a corner kick by Carl O’Connor into what proved to be the winning goal with a wonderful volley from inside the 18-year box. Ten minutes later, Jesse Fetterley’s low cross/shot was inadvertently deflected into his own net by an Akal FC defender for West Van’s second goal. Then, at the 30th minute mark, Ryan Glanville, after having been set up by Kyle McDiarmid, beat a couple of Akal defenders at the top of the box before blasting the ball into the far corner of the net. The visitors continued to dominate proceedings in the second half and added their third goal at the 50th minute mark when Corey Birza finished off a low cross from Jesse Fetterley from well inside the penalty area. At this point, Bruno Teixeira stepped up to the plate and scored two goals in rapid succession. On the first, Teixeira beat a couple of Akal defenders before blasting an unstoppable shot into the back of the net from outside the 18-year box. Then, a few minutes later, Teixeira converted a low cross from Sean Taylor into his team’s 6th goal from well inside the penalty area. The final goal was scored at about the 75th minute mark when Leo Nash headed home a well-taken free kick by Sean Taylor. Marco Durante registered the shutout for West Van FC, probably the easiest one of his career! As a result of the victory, West Van FC remains in 6th place in the standings while, as mentioned earlier, Akal FC has been officially relegated to the first division.

IMPERIAL CUP – FINAL

SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS - ICST PEGASUS 3-1: On Sunday, at Cloverdale Athletic Park in Surrey, the defending Imperial Cup champions—Surrey United—won their third Imperial Cup in 4 years ;by defeating ICST Pagasus by a hard-fought 3-1 margin in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd. Even though both teams started the game rather cautiously, it was the underdog Pegasus that came close to opening the scoring in the early stages of the match—on two separate occasions. On the first—at about the 5th minute mark—Diaz Kambere narrowly missed the bottom corner of the net with a shot from the top of the box, after some nifty passing between Niko Marcina and Adam Costley. Then, at the 15th minute mark, Azad Palani had his close-range, first-time shot brilliantly saved by Paul Shepherd. Shortly thereafter—at the 20th minute mark—the Firefighters broke the deadlock when a clever piece of individual skill by Vince Stewart resulted in a brilliant low cross, a cross which Angus Burke had no difficulty in converting into the opening goal. Pegasus tried desperately to get the equalizer before the halftime break and came close when Azad Palani’s looping volley sailed over the head of goalkeeper Paul Shepherd but then bounced off the field and somehow hit the crossbar. In the second half, Pegasus continued to press for the equalizer and finally succeeded at the 75th minute mark when the referee called a penalty kick against Surrey United. The play started when substitute Goldy Takhar set up Jag Gill with a clever pass. Subsequently, Gill was fouled just inside the penalty area by Angus Burke, resulting in a penalty kick being awarded. Niko Marcina then proceeded to calmly convert the spot shot for the tying goal. The Firefighters responded magnificently and regained the lead 10 minutes later when Vince Stewart sent Jeff Clarke bursting through the middle with a perfectly-placed pass. The former Whitecaps skipper rounded the Pegasus keeper—Amar Dhinsa—before cutting the ball back onto the path of Mason Webb who hammered his shot against the upright. United’s player/coach—Niall Thompson—showed his vast experience by diving full-length to head the rebound into the corner of the net for what proved to be the winning goal. Pegasus pressed hard to find the equalizer and pushed forward relentlessly but unsuccessfully. Very late in the game—in a lethal counter-attack—the Firemen added their insurance marker when Robbie Wilson broke up a Pegasus attack and sent Rizal Ganief racing in on goal with a brilliant pass from inside the Surrey United half. The speedy Ganief outpaced the Pegasus defenders, rounded the goalkeeper before hammering the ball into the net to seal the hard-earned victory. Despite the loss, Pegasus defender Diaz Kambere was a solid tower of strength throughout the contest, while midfielder Adam Costley was his typical inspirational self, as he attacked and defended tenaciously for the entire 90 minutes. For the winners, goalkeeper Paul Shepherd once again turned in a brilliant performance, while forwards Angus Burke and Rizal Ganief drove the Pegasus defenders to distraction with their pace and skill. Congratulations to the Surrey United Firefighters for their second consecutive Imperial Cup victory and good luck to both teams in the upcoming Provincial Cup playdowns!

MASTERS’ ‘A’ CUP – FINAL

SAPPERTON ROVERS – METRO-FORD WOLVES 4-2 OT: Also on Sunday, and also at Cloverdale Athletic Park, the heavily-favoured Sapperton Rovers managed to defeat the Metro-Ford Wolves by a 4-2 margin after an exciting and well-played 120 minutes of non-stop action. The old Wolves took the lead midway through the first half when Andrew Lovett latched on to a loose ball after a Sapperton defensive blunder and cleverly chipped it over the head of goalkeeper Tom Huntley. Early in the second half, the Rovers knotted the score on a brilliant near-range volley by Zico Najm as he converted a flicked header by Kent Waechter. At about the 70th minute mark, Sapperton took the lead when Alex Milenkov sent Ryan McNabb in on goal with an excellent pass. McNabb had no difficulty whatsoever in placing the ball into the back of the net for the go-ahead goal. In the dying moments of regulation time, Elliot Smith hammered home the equalizer for Metro-Ford, thus sending the game into overtime. Late in the first overtime period, Sapperton’s Alvin Prasad crossed a well-taken free kick onto the path of Zico Najm whose header found the back of the net for what proved to be the winning goal. The Wolves tried desperately to knot the score during the second overtime period, without any success. In fact, in the last minute of play, the Rovers scored the insurance marker on a lethal counter-attack when the Masters’ Division top goalscorer—Alex Milenkov—received the ball at the top of the penalty area and hammered it home from close range. The entire Sapperton team played very well and fully deserved the victory but special mention should made of defenders Kent Waechter and Mike Araszewski for their rock-solid performances. Also, midfielders Paul Favaro, Zico Najm, and Karm Lidder turned in excellent performances as they dictated the pace of the game from start to finish. For Metro-Ford, central defender Tim Harris, midfielders Richard Price, and forward Jeff Roberts worked hard all game long, albeit in a losing cause. Both teams will represent the VMSL in the upcoming Provincial Cup playdowns.

PREMIER DIVISION

MAKE-UP GAMES

COLUMBUS FC - METRO-FORD WOLVES 2-0: On Tuesday, March 22 Columbus FC remained in contention for third place by defeating the Metro-Ford Wolves by a 2-0 margin in a match played at Charles Best School in Coquitlam. Both goals came in the second half after the young Metro-Ford squad had held the vaunted Columbus attackers at bay during the first 45 minutes. The first Columbus goal came at the 65th minute mark when Steve DeBlasio blasted the ball into the net from the edge of the penalty area on a well-executed free-kick. The second goal was scored shortly thereafter when Stefano Pannu placed a low, hard cross into the six-yard box after having beaten a couple of Metro-Ford defenders down the left flank. Kaz Kikuchi proceeded to side-foot the ball into the net for the insurance marker. Columbus’ defenders Jonathan Poli, Tony Gaita, Blair Robertson, and Graeme Smith were rock-solid as they made life relatively easy for goalkeeper Thomas Lindley as he recorded yet another clean sheet. Forward Steve DeBlasio also turned in an outstanding performance, in a winning cause. For Metro-Ford, young defenders Kyle Jones and Paul Clerc performed admirably against the very experienced Columbus forwards, while midfielders Andre` Pietramala and Adam Jones—both youth call-ups—also deserve special mention for their fine performances.

CROATIA SC - SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS 3-2: Also on Tuesday evening, at South Memorial Park in Vancouver, Croatia SC finally got out of the dreaded relegation danger zone by upsetting the league champions Surrey United Firefighters by a 3-2 margin. The visiting Firemen took the lead early in the game when Rizal Ganief scored on a fine individual effort. The Croatians tied things up just before the halftime whistle on a penalty kick by Andre` Costa after Paul Bolina had been taken down inside the box. Early in the second half, the reigning VMSL champions regained the lead, this time on a goal-mouth scramble that was finished off by defender Steve McAuley. Croatia SC bounced back and equalized at the 60th minute mark when playing-coach Josip Maras chipped a great pass to former professional Johnny Sulentic who proceeded to slot the ball into the bottom corner of the net from well inside the penalty area. Late in the match—at about the 85th minute mark—the Croatians took the lead by scoring what proved to be the winning goal when Andre` Costa finished off a clever 3-way passing play—also involving Daniel Rogic and Bernard Kesic—with a close-range shot. As mentioned earlier, the hard-earned victory puts the Croatians out of the danger zone!

PUNJAB HURRICANES - ICST PEGASUS 0-0: On Wednesday, March 23, at Newton Athletic Park, the Punjab Hurricanes and ICST Pegasus settled to a scoreless tie after a tightly-fought defensive battle. The Hurricanes carried most of the play during the first half, while the second half belonged almost entirely to the visiting Pegasus team. However, some excellent defending on the part of both teams and some brilliant goalkeeping by Punjab’s Mark Macelli—a youth call-up playing his first ever senior game—and Pegasus’ Amar Dhinsa kept the match scoreless till the end. Defensively, Diaz Kambere and Paul Bahia were once again rock-solid for ICST Pegasus, while young forward Sahil Sandhu turned in yet another exciting performance, using his speed and skill to full advantage. For the Hurricanes, defenders Joey Brar and Pami Birring were also impressive as they held the vaunted Pegasus attackers—Sahil Sandhu and Azad Palani—scoreless during the entire match.

WEST VAN FC - SERBIAN WHITE EAGLES 5-0: On Friday evening, at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver, West Van FC easily disposed of the Serbian White Eagles by defeating the visitors by an elaborate 5-0 margin. Veteran Paul Dailly—one of the oldest players in the VMSL’s Premier Division—led the way by scoring 4 goals, 3 of them on penalty kicks. Dailly’s fourth goal was a thing of beauty as he unleashed one of his patented long-range shots that amazingly found the back of the net. Corey Birza scored West Van’s last goal at the 75th minute mark on a fine individual effort. Young Reid Alsop recorded the shutout in the West Van net in his first start of the season. For the White Eagles, defender Stefan Kubala, midfielder Mladen Ljumovic, and forward Branko Jerkovic performed admirably despite the lop-sided scoreline.

DELTA UNITED - RICHMOND FC HIBERNIANS 1-0: On Saturday, at Minoru Oval in Richmond, Delta United dealt the Richmond Hibernians a severe blow by beating them by a narrow 1-0 margin and, in so doing, knocking them out of third place in the VMSL Premier Division standings. The lone goal of the contest was scored at the 60th minute mark when Delta’s Oscar Jimenez was fouled inside the Richmond penalty area by Marcus Brougham. On the ensuing penalty kick, veteran Mark Gomes made no mistake and slotted the ball home for the game’s lone goal. Defensively, Delta’s experienced duo—Steve Millar and Woody Bradford—were rock-solid, making life relatively easy for goalkeeper Drew Smiley’s shutout. Midfielders Harpreet Khakh and Oscar Jimenez also played extremely well in a winning cause. Richmond’s defenders Mike Revell and Stu Walters—as well as midfielder Chase Wickham—also deserve special mention for their fine performances. As mentioned earlier, Richmond’ loss—combined with Columbus’ two victories—place the ‘Italians’ in third place in the final Premier Division standings.

SAPPERTON ROVERS - METRO-FORD WOLVES 1-0: Also on Saturday, at Queen’s Park Stadium in New Westminster, the Sapperton Rovers breathed a sigh of relief as they semi-officially avoided relegation by upsetting the struggling Metro-Ford Wolves by a narrow 1-0 margin. The official relegation sentence was decided on Sunday when the Punjab Hurricanes were demolished by Columbus FC by a 5-0 margin. The Rovers defended tenaciously during the entire first half as the Wolves attacked relentlessly in search of the opening goal. In particular, Chris Attadia was outstanding as he did a brilliant job in marking the very dangerous Jovan Blagojevic. Midway through the first half, veteran Emilio Bottiglieri had his fine header brilliantly saved by Sapperton’s goalkeeper Garth Lagasse. Early in the second half, the Rovers scored what proved to be the winning goal when Mark McQuade’s free kick was slotted home by veteran Ted Ullrich from close range. For the remainder of the match, Sapperton defended extremely well, due mostly to some fine play on the part of Colin Phillips and Chris Attadia. In the late stages of the match, Garth Lagasse came up with another sensational save to deny young call-up Jacob Gosse a golden goalscoring opportunity. Midfielder Mark McQuade and forward Jason Pierotti played extremely well for the Rovers, while Metro-Ford’s youth call-ups Jacob Gosse, Sam Coulter, Tyler Leonard, and goalkeeper Jaden Epplette also performed admirably throughout the tough contest.

COLUMBUS FC - PUNJAB HURRICANES 5-0: On Sunday, at Vancouver Technical School, Columbus FC put the Punjab Hurricanes out of their misery by officially relegating them to the first division by defeating them by a lop-sided 5-0 score. The first half was a very tight and hard-fought contest with both teams defending with grit and determination. The Hurricanes had the best goalscoring opportunities in the first half, but efforts by Bobby Jhutty and Joti Thind went awry. The second half told a totally different story as the ‘Italians’ took over the reins of the match and managed to score 5 unanswered goals. On the first, Stefano Pannu converted a clever pass by Steve DeBlasio into what proved to be the winning goal. Then, Kaz Kikuchi was able to find the net with a spectacular volley from outside the penalty area. Shortly thereafter, Steve Frazao added two goals in rapid succession as he was able to find the net with some clinical finishing. Late in the match, Steve DeBlasio rounded out the scoring on a splendid individual effort. Veteran defender Tony Gaita and forward Kaz Kikuchi played extremely well for Columbus FC as the home team lay claim on the coveted third place. Despite the loss, the Hurricanes’ midfielders—Bobby Jhutty, Ryan Dhillon, and Joti Thind—performed admirably. As mentioned earlier, the Hurricanes have now been officially relegated to the first division, while Columbus FC ends the long and laborious season in third place.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS for winning their second consecutive Imperial Cup as a result of their hard-earned 3-1 victory over the very talented ICST Pegasus. Led by the excellent performances of veterans Jeff Clarke, Niall Thompson, and Paul Shepherd, the Firefighters were finally able to secure the victory against their very skilled opponents. Surrey United has therefore repeated last season’s performance by winning both VMSL awards—the league championship and the Imperial Cup. One more to go!!

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Surrey United’s veteran goalkeeper PAUL SHEPHERD for his magnificent performance in his team’s 3-1 victory over the very skillful ICST Pegasus. Time after time, Shepherd came up with amazing saves to keep his team in the game, particularly in the early going. For his outstanding performance this past week, PAUL SHEPHERD will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2011-04-21.

PREMIER DIVISION

MAKE-UP GAMES

CROATIA SC - ICST PEGASUS 3-1: On Friday evening, at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey, the Croatians ended their season on a bright note by defeating the highly-regarded—and heavily-favoured—ICST Pegasus by a well-earned 3-1 margin. Croatia SC took the lead very early in the match when former professional Johnny Sulentic beat a couple of Pegasus defenders inside the penalty area before driving an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner of the net. Shortly thereafter, the Croatians almost added to their lead with Johnny Sulentic once again involved in the play. On this occasion, Sulentic sent Andrew Sciampacone racing in on goal with a splendid through ball. Unfortunately for Sciampacone—and the entire Croatia crew—his shot just went wide of the mark. At about the 25th minute mark, Sulentic cleverly flicked the ball to a streaking Bernard Kesic, but his shot also narrowly missed the target. As luck would have it, however, it was Pegasus that scored the tying goal at the 30th minute mark when Jag Gill collected an excellent pass from Sahil Sandhu at the top of the Croatia penalty area and rifled home a wicked drive for the equalizer. The Croatians bounced back and came close to retaking the lead on a couple of occasions before the halftime whistle but Pegasus’ goalkeeper Amar Dhinsa pulled off two semi-miraculous saves—on shots by Corey Sanford and Bernard Kesic—to keep the score tied. In the second half, Croatia SC continued to dominate and scored what proved to be the winning goal at the 50th minute mark when young call-up Tomislav Tomic and Bernard Kesic combined to set up veteran Johnny Sulentic at the corner of the 18-yard box. Sutentic proceeded to outmuscle a couple of Pegasus defenders before slotting the ball into the back of the net. Then, at the 60th minute mark, Sulentic whipped a dangerous ball into the penalty area, a cross which defender Jag Sajan inadvertently deflected into his own net. Young forward Bernard Kesic turned in an impressive performance in his first start for Croatia SC, while youth call-up Tomislav Tomic also played extremely well in his left back position. Needless to say, Johnny Sulentic was always dangerous and dominant, as he scored 2 great goals and set up the third. For Pegasus, midfielders Omari Aldridge, Paul Bahia, and Sahil Sandhu—as well as defender Gary Sidhu—also played very well, albeit in a losing cause. ICST Pegasus will now proceed to the Provincial Cup playdowns where they will face Bays United on the weekend of April 16/17 in Victoria. The Croatians, on the other hand, will take a few months off since they failed to qualify for the Provincial Cup playdowns.

WESTSIDE FC - ICSF INTER 0-0: On Sunday, at South Memorial Park in Vancouver, Westside FC and ICSF Inter faced off in a very important game, the result of which would determine which of the two teams qualified for the Provincial Cup playdowns. Westside FC—being 2 points behind the ‘Italians’—needed a victory, while a tie would place ICSF Inter in the coveted Provincial Cup competition. Both teams had excellent scoring chances in the first half, but some solid goalkeeping on the part of Westside’s Rowan Anders and Inter’s Dennis Kindel kept the game scoreless. In particular, at the 15th minute mark, Inter’s Liam Miller—after having received a great cross from Sheldon Maistry—was denied the opportunity to score on a point-blank shot by a phenomenal save on the part of Anders. At the other end of the pitch, Sebastian Crema’s long-range blast was brilliantly stopped by Kindel. The second half was more or less a repeat of the first as both teams took turns attacking and defending. Needless to say, the Westsiders exerted most of the pressure since they desperately needed all 3 points. However, Inter’s counter-attacks were very dangerous and forced Rowan Anders to pull off a couple more miraculous saves—on shots by Sheldon Maistry and Colin Streckmann. Westside also came close to scoring the all-important goal but Graeme Webber’s shot—from inside the box—skimmed off the top of the crossbar. ICSF Inter will now travel to Vancouver Island to face Cowichan in the first round of the Provincial Cup while the Westsiders will have to wait till next season!

TEAM OF THE WEEK: CROATIA SC for its gutsy performance in defeating the heavily-favoured ICST Pegasus by a 3-1 margin in what many people would call a ‘mean-nothing’ game. With only pride at stake, the Croatians dominated the entire 90 minutes of the match and fully deserved the victory. Former professional Johnny Sulentic, young Bernard Kesic, and youth call-up Tomislav Tomic led the way with their superlative performances.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Croatia SC’s veteran forward JOHNNY SULENTIC for his magnificent performance in his team’s 3-1 victory over the very skillful ICST Pegasus. Sulentic drove the Pegasus defenders to distraction throughout the entire game with his skill and indomitable determination. To cap off a brilliant individual performance, Sulentic scored two great goals and was also instrumental in setting up the third marker. For his outstanding performance this past week, JOHNNY SULENTIC will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2011-04-28.

PROVINCIAL ‘A’ CUP

PRELIMINARY ROUND

ICSF INTER - COWICHAN FC 3-1: On Sunday, at McAdams Park in Victoria, ICSF Inter eliminated Cowichan from further Provincial Cup competition by defeating the home team by a 3-1 margin. The Vancouver Island team took the lead at the 16th minute mark when Ryan Andre` took advantage of an Inter defensive blunder and scored from close range on a goalmouth scramble. The ‘Italians’ replied quickly and knotted the score a few minutes later when Sheldon Maistry flicked the ball to a streaking Andrew Corazza who proceeded to blast an unstoppable shot into the net for the equalizer. Early in the second half, Inter’s goalkeeper—Erman Ozkan—pulled off a semi-miraculous save on a penalty kick, a save that appeared to turn the tide in Inter’s favour. At the 70th minute mark, young Luigi Pantusa picked up a poor clearance at the edge of the penalty area, beat a couple of Cowichan defenders, before placing the ball into the back of the net for what proved to be the winning goal. Shortly thereafter, Andrew Corazza put the game out of Cowichan’s reach when he scored his second goal of the match by chipping the ball over the goalkeeper’s outstretched hands after having received a great pass from Colin Streckmann. Midfielders Mike Winter and Luigi Pantusa dictated the pace of the match throughout the entire 90 minutes with their skill and determination, while Andrew Corazza lived up to his reputation by scoring two excellent goals. ICSF Inter will now advance to the Round of 16 against another strong VMSL team: West Van FC. The all-important match will be played on Friday evening, at 8:00 p.m. at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver.

COQUITALM METRO-FORD WOLVES - JUAN de FUCA 6-0: On Saturday, at Town Centre Park in Langford (Victoria), the visiting Wolves demolished the home team by an elaborate 6-0 margin. After a rather sluggish start, the Wolves took the lead midway through the first half when young Jovan Blagojevic latched on to a fine pass from Russel Huggon and hammered home the opening goal with an excellent shot. Immediately thereafter, Anthony DiNicolo burst forward from his defensive position and slipped a marvellous ball onto the path of Alfredo Valente who neatly chipped it over an onrushing goalkeeper for Metro-Ford’s first insurance marker. Just before halftime, Valente became the provider as he whipped a wonderful cross into the danger zone, a cross which defender Matt Besuschko converted into the Wolves’ third goal. Early in the second half, Jovan Blagojevic danced around a few Juan de Fuca defenders before floating a lovely cross into the penalty area, where veteran Oliver Heald rose majestically to head home Metro-Ford’s fourth goal. Russel Huggon and Jamie Fletcher rounded out the Wolves’ scoring—in the 70th and 80th minute respectively—both with fine finishes from just inside the penalty area. Defenders Emilio Bottiglieri and Anthony DiNicolo played extremely well, making life relatively easy for goalkeeper Lucas Menz, as he earned his easiest shutout of the season. In fact, Menz only made one significant save during the entire match when—early in the game—he tipped a well-taken free kick by Landon Benson over the crossbar. Veteran midfielders Russel Huggon and Alfredo Valente were going concerns throughout he contest in their attacking roles. The Wolves will now progress to the Round of 16 of the Provincial ‘A’ Cup where they’ll face the Richmond FC Hibernians. The match is slated for Saturday, April 16 at 3:00 p.m. at Minoru Oval in Richmond.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: ICSF INTER for its excellent performance in defeating the home-based Cowichan FC in a Provincial Cup match in Victoria. It is never easy to beat a Vancouver Island team on their home turf, but the ‘Italians’ managed to do that by a relatively comfortable 3-1 margin. Led by the fine play of midfielders Luigi Pantusa and Michael Winter—as well as the clinical finishing of forward Andrew Corazza—ICSF Inter fully deserved the hard-earned victory.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: ICSF Inter’s forward ANDREW CORAZZA for his brilliant 2-goal performance in his team’s 3-1 victory over Cowichan FC. After a 4-game absence, Corazza returned to his usual attacking role and performed admirably throughout the contest. Not only did he score two excellent goals, but he also created several other opportunities, with his skill and tenacity. For his outstanding performance this past week, ANDREW CORAZZA will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2011-05-05.
