PREMIER DIVISION – DAY 15

No big upsets took place this past weekend, although ICSF Inter’s 2-1 victory over West Van FC could be classified as a surprise result. Therefore, nothing much changed in the Premier Division standings, with the Metro-Ford Wolves still leading the pack with an impressive 11-3-1 record. At the bottom of the table, the Serbian White Eagles—after upsetting the potent Surrey United last week—returned to their losing ways and thus remained in last place with only 7 points. A couple of key games will be played this weekend with West Van FC hosting Surrey United on Friday evening, while the red-hot ICSF Inter will travel to Coquitlam to take on the league-leading Metro-Ford Wolves on Saturday afternoon.

ICST PEGASUS - SERBIAN WHITE EAGLES 4-2: On Friday evening, at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey, the hosts came back from a 2-1 deficit and eventually defeated the visiting White Eagles by a reasonably comfortable 4-2 margin. Pegasus took the lead at the 20th minute mark when Omari Aldridge converted a fine cross by Deep Toor into the opening goal. The Serbians fought back tenaciously and quickly restored parity when Bobby Jhutty stole the ball from defender Gurjit Dhaliwal and proceeded to set up Majo Bratic for the equalizer. The White Eagles then took the unexpected lead at the 60th minute when Juan Sanchez’ well-taken free kick was volleyed home by David Hill from the edge of the penalty area. Soon thereafter—at about the 65th minute mark—Pegasus was able to knot the score when a wide-open David Samra easily tapped the ball into the net from close range. Ten minutes later, Pegasus scored what proved to be the winning goal when Niko Marcina sent Omari Aldridge flying towards the White Eagles goal with an exquisite through ball. Aldridge’s shot, however, hit the crossbar but Jag Gill picked up the rebound and slotted the ball home without any hesitation. Late in the game, Aldridge capped off a brilliant individual performance with a brilliant, curling shot from the top of the box, a shot that found the top corner of the net and thus sealed the victory for ICST Pegasus. Midfielders Niko Marcina and Diaz Kambere played extremely well for Pegasus, while forward Omari Aldridge was a going concern throughout the match as he drove the White Eagles defenders to distraction with his pace, skill, and fitness. For the Serbians, defenders Joel Malouf and Derrick Bassi also played very well, while goalkeeper Richard Goddard was forced to make several fine saves in order to keep the score respectable. The victory elevates Pegasus to 9th place in the Premier Division standings, while the White Eagles remained mired in last place with a 2-1-11 record.

SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS - WESTSIDE FC 6-2: On Saturday afternoon, at Cloverdale Athletic Park in Surrey, the Firefighters returned to their winning ways with a resounding 6-2 victory over the visiting Westside FC. The home team took the lead early in the match when a penalty kick was awarded for a hand-ball infraction by Westside’s Graeme Webber. Rizal Ganief stepped up to the place and hammered the ball home for the opening goal. At about the 15th minute mark, Surrey United increased its lead when Lucas Barrett slammed home a fine cross by Ryan Reynolds from close range. To their credit, the visitors fought back tenaciously and were rewarded at the 25th minute mark when James Brown’s shot was deflected into the net by a Surrey defender. For the next 15 minutes the Westsiders enjoyed their best spell of the game and pushed forward in search of the equalizer, forcing the Firemen back on their defensive heels. As luck would have it, however, it was Surrey United that scored just before the halftime whistle, thus restoring its 2-goal lead. The play started with former Whitecap Steve Kindel crossing a fine ball into the box from the left flank. The ball was subsequently flicked on by Ryan Reynolds and slammed home from close range by young Raakim Amijee. Early in the second half, Surrey United put the game out of Westside’s reach when Andrew Proctor controlled a Mason Webb cross before placing the ball into the corner of the net. The visitors refused to quit and once again fought back and narrowed the margin at the 65th minute mark on a counter-attack goal by young Michael Buree. Five minutes later, however, Surrey United scored its fifth goal of the contest when Rizal Ganief finished off a picture-perfect cross from young Sean Einarsson to notch his second goal of the match. Surrey rounded out the scoring late in the game when substitute Cam Wilson tucked home an Angus Burke feed. Despite the loss, Westside’s central midfielder Wyatt Seddon-Johnstone played extremely well throughout the contest. The Firefighters’ victory solidifies their hold on second place, with a 9-2-3 record, while Westside FC remains in 6th place with 22 points.

RICHMOND FC HIBERNIANS - PUNJAB HURRICANES 3-2: The second Saturday game was played at Minoru Park in Richmond between the red-hot Hibernians and the up-and-down Hurricanes. At the end of the day, the Hibs walked away with the hard-earned 3 points—their fourth victory in a row. The Hurricanes took the early lead when Josh Bennett won a 50-50 ball in the middle of the park and sent a streaking Roman Doutkevich on a breakaway with an immaculate pass. Doutkevich proceeded to slot the ball into the back of the net, past a charging Luke O’Shea—the Richmond goalkeeper. Midway through the first half, Richmond knotted the score when Taj Sangara converted a great cross by midfielder Craig McMillan, who had previously beat 3 defenders on his way towards the Hurricanes’ goal. Shortly thereafter, the desperate Hurricanes regained the lead when Joey Brar finished off a well-taken corner kick by Gagan Josan by volleying the ball into the top left corner of the Richmond net. The Hibernians once again tied things up early in the second half when Taj Sangara scored his second goal of the match, this time on a great header from a perfectly-placed cross by Alan Chivers. At the 75th minute mark, Richmond FC scored the winning goal when Taj Sangara became the provider as he set up Mark Sammarco with a brilliant cross-field diagonal pass. Sammarco calmly controlled the ball and half-volleyed it into the Punjab net. Late in the game, the Hurricanes almost tied things up but Roman Doutkevich’s shot—from outside the penalty area—grazed the crossbar and sailed over the net. Needless to say, Taj Sangara played extremely well for the home team as he scored two great goals and also set up the winner. Forward Brad Caldwell, midfielder Alan Chivers, and defender Geoff Salt also turned in excellent performances for the victorious Hibernians. For the Hurricanes, defender Joey Brar and forward Roman Doutkevich also played very well, albeit in a losing cause. As a result of their fourth consecutive victory, the Hibernians find themselves in 7th place, with a 6-3-5 record, while the Hurricanes are still in penultimate place, with only 10 points from 14 games.

ICSF INTER - WEST VAN FC 2-1: Also on Saturday afternoon, at Burnaby Lake West Complex, ICSF Inter upset the visiting West Van FC by a close 2-1 score. The visitors had most of the possession in the early going and applied a lot of pressure on the Inter defence. However, the former Trollers were unable to capitalize on their numerous opportunities and the game remained scoreless till the 35th mark. At this juncture—against the run of play—Inter took the lead when veteran midfielder Joseph Marrello spotted a streaking Dominic Delli Santi and set him up with a perfect pass. Delli Santi then proceeded to neatly tuck the ball into the back of the net for the game’s opening goal. West Van continued to press but Inter’s goalkeeper—Erman Ozkan—came up with some brilliant saves to keep his team in the lead until the halftime whistle. Early in the second half, West Van finally knotted the score when Ryan Glanville was fouled inside the penalty area by Michael Winters. On the ensuing penalty kick, veteran Paul Dailly made no mistake as he calmly deposited the ball into the net for the equalizer. The ‘Italians’ responded positively and created a few goalscoring chances of their own. In particular, Sheldin Maistry and Joseph Marrello came very close to scoring but watched agonizingly as their shots barely missed the net. At the 73rd minute mark, Inter regained the lead when midfielder Colin Streckmann played a clever ball to Mike D’Agostino who was subsequently fouled inside the West Van penalty area by Drew Gelley. A penalty kick was awarded and Gelley was sent off for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity. Bevan Footman converted the penalty kick, thus giving Inter the lead and the eventual victory. Late in the game, West Van’s Milad Rahmati was also red-carded for a serious foul play infraction, leaving his team with only 9 men for the rest of the match. Defender Michael Winter turned in a marvellous performance for ICSF Inter, while young midfielders Luigi Pantusa, Dom Delli Santi, and Mike D’Agostino worked very hard and effectively during the entire match. The victory elevates ICSF Inter to a 7th place tie with the Richmond Hibernians, while West Van FC remains in a third place tie with Columbus FC and Delta United.

SAPPERTON ROVERS - CROATIA SC 0-0: The fourth, and last, Saturday game was played at Queen’s Park Stadium and featured two teams desperately in need of points: the host Sapperton Rovers and the visiting Croatia SC. Both teams fought hard but, in the end, had to settle for a scoreless draw, a result which can be defined as disappointing. The Rovers began the game brightly, instilling their robust, physical game in search of the badly-needed 3 points. The Croatians, on the other hand, maintained their ground and slowly began to carve out opportunities of their own, after wrestling possession from the Rovers as the first half progressed. At the 17th minute mark, Croatia’s goalkeeper—Didar Sandhu—made a wonderful reflex save when a great cross by Mark McQuade was headed towards the goal by an unmarked Ted Ullrich. To add insult to Sapperton’s injury, Kevin Booker picked up the rebound and inexplicably missed the net with his close-range shot. Shortly thereafter, Ullrich once again came close to scoring but, once again, Sandhu pulled off a great save to keep the game scoreless. The Croatians replied in kind and, at the 26th minute mark, young Kresemir Bebic raced in on goal on a partial breakaway only to have goalkeeper Garth Legasse come up with an outstanding save. Early in the second half, a fine interplay between Johnny Sulentic and Selim Karim resulted in an opportunity for Croatia’s Chris Craveiro, only to have his shot cleared off the line by Sapperton defender Brayden Volkenant. Shortly thereafter, at about the 65th minute mark, the Croatians again came close to taking the lead but, once again, goalkeeper Garth Legasse rose to the occasion and made a great save on a redirected shot by Chris Craveiro. Late in the match, Johnny Sulentic beat several Sapperton defenders before slipping a clever pass to an unmarked Goran Vitic whose chip shot barely missed the net. Both goalkeepers—Croatia’s Didar Sandhu and Sapperton’s Garth Legasse—played extremely well throughout the contest and fully deserved their shutouts. Croatia’s backline—composed of Matteo Agnoloni, Darko Jelic, Maarten Koorn, and Andrew Parkes—was rock-solid, while Sapperton’s defensive unit—Mark McQuade, Brayden Volkenant, and Rhys Volkenant—also played very well. As mentioned earlier, the result does neither team any favours as they both remain in danger of relegation.

COLUMBUS FC - AKAL FC 3-0: On Sunday, at Andy Livingstone Park in Vancouver, Columbus FC remained in contention for the league title by defeating the visiting Akal FC by an emphatic 3-0 margin. The ‘Italians’ got off to a great start and took control of the match right from the opening whistle. They were rewarded at the 5th minute mark when a well-taken corner kick by Steve DeBlasio found defender Blair Robertson at the far post. Robertson proceeded to calmly slot the ball into the back of the Akal net for what proved to be the winning goal. A few minutes later, Stefano Pannu received a brilliant pass from Steve Frazao just outside the Akal penalty area and unleashed a powerful, low shot that caught the inside of the post, giving the Akal goalkeeper—Nuno Jesus—no chance whatsoever. Columbus could easily have added a couple of more goals but breakaway chances by Steve Frazao and Nathan Quan went awry with Frazao barely missing the net and Quan having his shot brilliantly saved by Nuno Jesus. Late in the first half, Columbus put the game out of Akal’s reach when Stefano Pannu found an unmarked Kazunori Kikuchi inside the Akal penalty area. Without a moment’s hesitation, Kikuchi put an end to Akal’s chances of recovery with a brilliant shot. In the second half, Columbus appeared to take its foot off the pedal as Akal tried hard to get back into the match. Early in the second half, Akal’s Desmond Tachie came close to narrowing the margin but his excellent shot bounced off the post and out of danger. Soon thereafter, Tachie was fouled inside the penalty area by Columbus’ Blair Robertson, resulting in a penalty kick being awarded to Akal FC. Tachie himself took the spot shot but he blasted the ball wide thus maintaining Thomas Lindley rather easy shutout—his 6th clean-sheet of the season. Columbus’ forward Kazunori Kikuchi and midfielder Stefano Pannu turned in solid performances while Nathan Quan and Blair Robertson anchored the backline very effectively. Columbus thus remains in third place, with a 8-1-4 record, while Akal FC is getting closer and closer to the dreaded relegation zone!

METRO-FORD WOLVES - DELTA UNITED 3-1: Also on Sunday, at John Oliver Municipal Park in Delta, the league leading Metro-Ford Wolves defeated the aspiring Delta United by a 3-1 margin after a very entertaining and well-played 90 minute of non-stop action. Delta United got off to a great start and almost took the lead in the first minute of play when veteran Shawn Blakeway’s diving header—on a cross by Harp Khakh—barely missed the Metro-Ford net. The Wolves replied in kind and came close to taking the lead at the 9th minute mark but a well-taken shot by Jovan Blagojevic was brilliantly saved by Delta’s veteran goalkeeper, Steve London. Then it was Delta’s turn as Mike Gomes’ header barely missed the net after he had been set up by Shawn Blakeway. Midway through the first half, however, the Wolves took the lead with Blagojevic once again involved in the play. On this occasion, he unleashed a wicked shot from the edge of the penalty area, once again forcing London to make a semi-miraculous save. Luckily for the Wolves, veteran Russel Huggon was in the right place at the right time as he hammered home the rebound from close range to give his team the lead. Soon thereafter, Delta United almost knotted the score as Harp Khakh sent Shawn Blakeway racing in on goal on a breakaway. Unfortunately for the home team, Blakeway’s shot narrowly missed the target and the score remained 1-0 for the visitors till the halftime whistle. In the second half, Delta United tried desperately to get back into the match but, as luck would have it, it was Metro-Ford that added to its lead on a lethal counter-attack as Carlo Basso played a clever ball to a streaking Jovan Blagojevic who raced in behind the Delta backline before calmly slotting the ball into the net for what proved to be the winning goal. Shortly thereafter, however, Delta United got back into the game when Mike Gomes took advantage of a rather ugly goal-mouth scramble and sent the ball in the direction of the Metro-Ford net where it was inadvertently deflected into his own net by Russel Huggon. At the 80th minute mark, Huggon made amends for his previous faux-pas as he beat a few Delta defenders before slipping the ball to an unmarked Carlo Basso who hammered home the Wolves’ third goal from just inside the penalty area. Despite the loss, Delta’s goalkeeper Steve London turned in yet another superlative performance, while forward Harp Khakh and midfielder Mike Gomes also played remarkably well during the entire 90 minutes. For Metro-Ford, the defensive quartet—veteran Cliff Vaghy and youngsters Connor Ayre, Paul Clerc, and Kia Mirzahossein—were outstanding as they kept Delta’s vaunted attackers at bay. Young midfielder Devin Phelan also turned in a brilliant performance while forwards Carlo Basso and Jovan Blagojevic were more than a handful for the Delta defenders throughout the match. The victory solidifies the Wolves’ hold on first place, while Delta United remains tied for third place, with an admirable 8-1-5 record.

ICSF INTER - WESTSIDE FC 1-0: On Wednesday, December 1, a Day 13 make-up game was played at Vancouver Technical School between two middle of the pack teams: ICSF Inter and Westside FC. The match, between two committed and evenly-matched teams, was hard-fought and ended with a 1-0 victory for the ‘Italians’. Westside FC had a difficult time adjusting to the Inter formation in the early going and absorbed some substantial pressure. The Westsiders managed to adjust their shape and eventually got more into the game but, as the momentum appeared to shift, it was Inter that took the lead at the 40th minute mark when young veteran Andrew Corazza took advantage of some poor communication among the Westside defenders and clinically finished off the lone goal of the contest. Both teams traded chances for the remainder of the first half and Westside was unfortunate not to get the equalizer when Sebastian Crema and Andrew Czalij were both stymied by goalkeeper Erman Ozkan in rapid succession. The second half saw Westside FC press hard for the equalizer, while Inter relied mainly on defending and counter-attacking, a tactic that proved to be very successful. In particular, on one of Inter’s counter-attacks, Sheldin Maistry was unable to take advantage of a defensive blunder as his shot went wide of the open net. Midfielders Wyatt Seddon-Johnstone, James Brown, and Andre` Herath played extremely well for Westside FC, as did veteran defender Andrew Czalij. For Inter, defender Michael Winter was a tower of strength throughout the match, while goalkeeper Erman Ozkan fully earned his shutout with some excellent goalkeeping. Also, young midfielders Luigi Pantusa and Domenico Delli Santi once again performed admirably.

METRO-FORD WOLVES - SAPPERTON ROVERS 2-0: On Tuesday, November 30, another Day 13 match was played, this one at Charles Best School in Coquitlam between the league-leading Metro-Ford Wolves and the struggling Sapperton Rovers. At the end of the day, the young Wolves prevailed by a 2-0 margin with Jovan Blagojevic scoring both goals in fine fashion. The first goal was scored at the 15th minute mark when Blagojevic collected the ball near the touchline, proceeded to twist himself around a couple of Sapperton defenders before unleashing an unstoppable left-footed shot into the top corner of the net. Then, at the 30th minute mark, Blagojevic repeated his earlier feat as he dribbled around a Sapperton defender before tucking the ball under the Sapperton goalkeeper for the insurance marker. At the other end of the pitch, Metro-Ford goalkeeper Lucas Menz had to come up with a couple of brilliant saves—on shots by Ted Ullrich and Jason Pierotti—to maintain his team’s lead and his clean sheet. In the second half, the Wolves continued to press and could have increased their margin of victory had it not been for some outstanding goalkeeping on the part of Simon Postma—particularly on shots by Blagojevic, Alfredo Valente, and Russel Huggon. Defensively, Metro-Ford’s young centre-backs Paul Clerc and Sam Coulter were rock solid throughout the match while midfielders Rob Sing and Jay Gangnes performed admirably for the Rovers, albeit in a losing cause.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: ICSF Inter for its excellent performances in beating Westside FC and West Van FC by narrow, but well-earned margins. Led by the fine play of young defender Michael Winter—as well as even younger midfielders Domenico Delli Santi and Luigi Pantusa—Inter climbed to 7th place in the standings as a result of the two very important victories. Inter’s overall record is now an even 6-3-6.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Metro-Ford Wolves wide midfielder JOVAN BLAGOJEVIC for his remarkable performances in his team’s victories over the Sapperton Rovers and Delta United. On both occasions, Blagojevic led the way with his inimitable skill and pace. Against the Rovers, he scored both goals—in brilliant fashion—in his team’s 2-0 victory. Against Delta, he scored yet another fantastic goal and set up two others. For his magnificent performances, JOVAN BLAGOJEVIC will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2010-12-30.

PREMIER DIVISION – DAY 16

One huge upset took place this past week, as the struggling Punjab Hurricanes defeated Columbus FC—by a 2-0 score—in a make-up game on Wednesday evening. Columbus, however, bounced back and remained tied for third place by edging the Serbian White Eagles 1-0 on Sunday evening, while the unpredictable Hurricanes suffered an embarrassing 5-0 defeat at the hands of Delta United. At the top of the table, things got more interesting as Surrey United edged closer to the league-leading Metro-Ford Wolves by defeating West Van FC, while the Wolves were held to a 1-1 tie by ICSF Inter.

SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS - WEST VAN FC 2-1: The defending champions—Surrey United Firefighters—extended their win streak to two games with a very impressive come-from-behind 2-1 victory over West Van FC at Ambleside Park on Friday evening. The home team got off to a good start and basically dominated the entire first half, scoring once and coming close on several other occasions. Only some brilliant goalkeeping on the part of Surrey United’s Paul Shepherd kept the game scoreless until the 25th minute mark. At this point, West Van’s Kevin Crouch finally gave his team the well-deserved lead when he took advantage of a goal-mouth scramble and hammered the ball into the net from close range. The former Trollers continued pressing and came close to doubling their margin at the 38th minute mark, but Shepherd once again rose to the occasion and pulled off a brilliant save on a point-blank shot by Crouch. Soon thereafter, Shepherd robbed Ryan Glanville with yet another amazing save, thus keeping the score at 1-0 till the halftime whistle. Led by two experienced former Whitecaps—Steve Kindel and Jeff Clarke—the Firemen got back into the match in the second half. Kindel’s and Clarke’s immaculate passing skills frequently set up the Surrey United young and speedy forwards as they started to create very dangerous and threatening goalscoring opportunities. Finally, at the 63rd minute mark, the Firefighters knotted the score when a patented Clarke pass—to Rizal Ganief—was redirected towards Angus Burke, whose initial shot was brilliantly saved by West Van’s goalkeeper Marco Durante. However, Burke reacted quickly and hammered home the rebound for the equalizer. Not content with the tie, the Firemen pushed forward tenaciously in search of the winning goal and were rewarded at the 75th minute mark when a well-taken corner kick by Vinny Stewart found 16-year old youth call-up Sean Einarsson at the top of the box. The youngster proceeded to hit a great, low shot towards the West Van net, a shot that Angus Burke deflected past a sprawling Marco Durante for the winning goal. Shortly thereafter, West Van’s chances of tying things up came to an abrupt end when veteran defender Tim Perry was ejected from the game for a foul and abusive language infraction, thus leaving his team short-handed till the final whistle. Surrey United continued to press and came close to scoring what would have been the insurance marker in the late stages of the game but Durante pulled off another superb save on a shot by Cam Wilson. The hard-earned victory closes the gap between Surrey United and the league-leading Metro-Ford Wolves, while West Van now needs a minor miracle to get back into title contention.

ICSF INTER - METRO-FORD WOLVES 1-1: On Saturday afternoon, at Coquitlam Town Centre, the league-leading Metro-Ford Wolves were held to a 1-1 tie by the visiting ‘Italians’—the second draw of the season between these two teams. Led by the excellent play of young central midfielder Luigi Pantusa, ICSF Inter got off to a great start and dominated the early part of the match. In particular, Pantusa’s fine passing sent fellow midfielder Mike D’Agostino down the right flank on several dangerous occasions as he used his speed and determination to drive the Metro-Ford defenders to distraction. However, it was the home team that came very close to taking the lead at the 15th minute mark when midfielder Brayden Gant had his excellent shot brilliantly saved by Inter’s goalkeeper, Erman Ozkan. Immediately thereafter, on a lethal counter-attack, Inter took the lead when newly-signed Michael Nonni finished off a brilliant 3-way passing play—involving Pantusa, D’Agostino, and veteran Joseph Marrello—with an unbelievable drive to the top near post. The goal seemed to be the wake-up that the Wolves needed as they started to press tenaciously in search of the equalizer. However, some excellent defending on the part of Jesse Dhami, Bevan Footman, Michael Winter, and Ryan Zaharija kept the vaunted Metro-Ford attack at bay until the 30th minute mark. At this point, 4 Metro-Ford veterans combined to knot the score as Jamie Fletcher sent Adam Day down the right flank with a perfect pass. Day then proceeded to whip a hard cross onto the path of former Whitecap Alfredo Valente who, without a moment’s hesitation, slipped a pin-point cross to Russel Huggon who then hammered the ball into the Inter net for the equalizer. The Wolves continued to dominate proceedings for the remainder of the first half but, once again, some excellent defending on the part of Inter’s backline kept the score at 1-1 till the halftime whistle. The second half was more or less a repeat of the first, with the only exception being that no goals were scored. However, both teams had numerous chances but some solid goalkeeping on the part of Inter’s Erman Ozkan and Metro-Ford’s Lucas Menz kept the score tied till the end. Inter’s forward Michael Nonni was a going concern throughout the contest, while—as mentioned earlier—midfielders Luigi Pantusa and Mike D’Agostino turned in brilliant performances. For the Wolves, right fullback Adam Day, midfielder Andrew Veer, and forward Russel Huggon were also outstanding in their respective roles. The result keeps Metro-Ford in first place in the Premier Division standings, albeit by the narrowest of margins, while ICSF Inter remains in the middle of the pack with an even 6-4-6 record.

COLUMBUS FC - SERBIAN WHITE EAGLES 1-0: On Sunday evening, at Burnaby Lake West Complex, Columbus FC bounced back from Wednesday evening’s embarrassing defeat at the hands of the Punjab Hurricanes by edging the last place White Eagles by a narrow 1-0 margin. The Serbian White Eagles’ goalkeeper—Tomas Koblyka—made several outstanding saves during the match and kept his team in the running till the final whistle. As expected, Columbus controlled most of the game and enjoyed the vast majority of possession but had to wait till the 70th minute mark to score the winning goal. Defender Blair Robertson, after having made a great run down the right flank, sent a brilliant cross into the box, where teammate Stefano Pannu was able to one-time the ball into the back of the Serbian net. Early in the second half, Columbus’ goalkeeper—Thomas Lindley—was called upon to make a fine save on a breakaway chance by Nemanja Okuka as he thwarted the Serbian forward and thus recorded his 7th clean sheet of the season. Columbus’ midfielders Leigh Sembaluk and Stefano Pannu, as well as veteran defender Robbie Cairns, played remarkably well throughout the match, while newly-signed Donald Kambere turned in an excellent performance in the White Eagles’ midfield. The result leaves the White Eagles mired in last place, while Columbus FC is still tied for third place with Delta United.

DELTA UNITED - PUNJAB HURRICANES 5-0: On Saturday, at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey, Delta United bounced back from last week’s heart-breaking loss to the Metro-Ford Wolves by defeating the unpredictable Punjab Hurricanes by a decisive 5-0 score. Needless to say, the visitors dominated the entire game and fully deserved the emphatic margin of victory. Delta United almost took the lead very early in the match when Brett Livingstone, after having beaten a couple of Punjab defenders, hammered a rocket of a shot against the goalpost. At the 35th minute mark, however, Delta took the lead when Phil Lensky sent Shawn Blakeway on a breakaway that resulted in the first goal of the match as the veteran striker neatly tucked the ball into the back of the net. Late in the first half, Blakeway was denied a glorious goalscoring opportunity when the Hurricanes goalkeeper—Sheldon Steenhuis—came up with a brilliant diving save on Blakeway’s well-timed diving header. Early in the second half, Phil Lensky doubled Delta’s lead when he blasted a rocket of a shot into the Hurricanes’ net from the edge of the penalty area. Then, at the 61st minute mark, Lensky became the provider as he set up newly-signed Garrett Peters with a brilliant cross for Delta’s third goal. Soon thereafter, Peters scored his second goal of the match, once again on an immaculate pass from Lensky. Finally, just before the final whistle, Delta rounded out the scoring when Harp Khakh and playing-coach Steve Millar combined to set up Mike Gomes who proceeded the head the ball into the back of the net for his 6th goal of the season. The entire Delta clan played extremely well during the entire contest but special mention should be made of Steve Millar and Brian Gebbie, whose rock-solid defending made life rather easy for goalkeeper Steve London as he earned a rather easy clean-sheet. Needless to say, Phil Lensky played extremely well in the middle of the park as he directed traffic throughout the match in his own inimitable way. The victory keeps Delta United tied for third place with Columbus FC, with identical 9-1-5 records, while the Hurricanes are now tied for penultimate place with the Sapperton Rovers.

WESTSIDE FC - ICST PEGASUS 2-2: Also on Saturday, at Andy Livingstone Park in Vancouver, Westside FC and ICST Pegasus settled for a 2-2 tie, a result that leaves both teams in the middle of the pack in the Premier Division standings. Pegasus had most of the scoring chances in the first half and could easily have been up by a couple of goals had it not been for some outstanding goalkeeping on the part of Westside’s Rowan Anders. In fact, Anders thwarted clear-cut efforts by Deep Toor, Jag Gill, and Omari Aldridge to keep the game scoreless until the halftime whistle. The second half was more evenly played as the Westsiders got back into the match and started creating chances of their own. At the 60th minute mark, Westside FC scored the opening goal when a well-executed passing play involving Joe Bhegani and Sebastian Crema led to a square ball being played across the box and clinically finished by Gavin Barrett. Ten minutes later, Pegasus knotted the score when Diaz Kambere unleashed a wicked drive from well outside the penalty area, shot that gave Anders no chance whatsoever as the ball hit the crossbar and bounced into the net. Shortly thereafter, at about the 75th minute mark, Westside regained the lead as Gavin Barrett scored his second goal of the match as he took advantage of a lucky bounce to steer the ball into the back of the net. Very late in the match, the visitors were rewarded for their indomitable work ethic when Goldy Takhar was sent on a breakaway by Diaz Kambere and made no mistake as he calmly tucked the ball behind a helpless Rowan Anders for the tying goal. Omari Aldridge played very well for Pegasus on the right flank, while defender Paul Bahia, midfielder Diaz Kambere, and forward Sahil Sandhu also performed admirably during the entire contest. As mentioned earlier, Westside’s goalkeeper—Rowan Anders—pulled off some amazing saves, particularly in the first half, while veteran defender Chris Mehuys and young forward Gavin Barrett also deserve special mention for their fine play.

AKAL FC - SAPPERTON ROVERS 0-0: On Sunday, at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey, two teams desperate for points—Akal FC and the Sapperton Rovers—had to settle for a scoreless tie, thus leaving both of them near the bottom of the table. Neither team created too many goalscoring chances as they both appeared satisfied with the single point. Defenders Jeff Rogers and Sundeep Sull played very well for the Rovers, while Rob Sing and Kevin Booker performed admirably in the middle of the park . For Akal FC, defenders Hapbinder Chohan, Raju Chohan, Jessi Randhawa, and Surinder Janda were rock-solid, while midfielder Sarpreet Pahal was a going concern throughout the match.

ICST PEGASUS - CROATIA SC 3-2: On Wednesday, December 8, in a make-up game held at Vancouver Technical School, ICST Pegasus edged Croatia SC by a 3-2 margin. Pegasus took the early lead at the 7th minute mark when young Sahil Sandhu slotted home a rebound after a Niko Marcina breakaway opportunity had been stymied by Croatia’s goalkeeper, Didar Sandhu. Late in the first half, Sahil Sandhu added his second goal of the contest as he beat the older Sandhu (Didar) with a wicked shot from the edge of the penalty area. The Croatians bounced back in the second half and narrowed the margin at the 50th minute mark when Johnny Sulentic sent Kresimir Bebic flying towards the Pegasus goal on a breakaway. Bebic made no mistake and calmly placed the ball behind goalkeeper Andy Singh and into the back of the Pegasus net. However, Pegasus reestablished its 2-goal lead shortly thereafter as Jag Gill scored a brilliant goal on a fine individual effort. Once again, the Croatians bounced back and scored their second goal when Phil Kotter ripped the ball into the net from close range after having received a great square pass from Andre` Costa. Near the end of the match, Croatia SC came close to knotting the score on a couple of occasions, but Costa and Darko Jelic were unable to finish their golden opportunities.

PUNJAB HURRICANES - COLUMBUS FC 2-0: Also on Wednesday, December 8, the Punjab Hurricanes upset the heavily-favoured Columbus FC in a make-up match played at Andy Livingstone Park in Vancouver. The Hurricanes opened the scoring at the 30th minute mark when Cam Hundal converted a well-taken cross from Ryan Dhillon as he one-timed the ball into the Columbus net. In the second half, at the 70th minute mark, Sam Gill put the game out of Columbus’ reach, once again on a fine cross by Ryan Dhillon. Defensively, Joey Brar and Pami Birring played extremely well for the Hurricanes, while goalkeeper Jason Blakely fully earned his shut-out as he made several key saves in the second half of play.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS for their excellent performance in defeating the very talented West Van FC by a narrow, but well-earned 2-1 margin. Led by the fine play of former Whitecaps Steve Kindel and Jeff Clarke, the Firemen bounced back from a shaky first half and took control of the march, scoring two excellent goals—both by Angus Burke—to clinch the all-important victory.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Surrey United’s forward ANGUS BURKE for his excellent performance in his team’s vital 2-1 victory over West Van FC. After having been outplayed during the entire first half, the Firemen bounced back in the second half and, led by the inspirational play of Burke, were able to gather all 3 points by scoring two excellent goals. Needless to say, Burke scored both goals, to lead his team to victory. For his magnificent performance, ANGUS BURKE will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2011-01-07.

PREMIER DIVISION – DAY 17

No upsets occurred this past week, as the rich got richer while the weak got weaker! The two top teams—Metro-Ford and Surrey United—remained at the top of the table by virtue of their elaborate victories against the Punjab Hurricanes and ICSF Inter respectively. Unfortunately, the very important match between the Sapperton Rovers and the Serbian White Eagles had to be postponed due to a light failure at Vancouver Technical School. The remainder of the schedule should be very interesting as the battles at the top and bottom of the table become more and more intensive.

SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS - AKAL FC 5-1: The defending champions—Surrey United Firefighters—extended their win streak to 3 games with a rather easy 5-1 victory over the struggling Akal FC in a make-up game played on Wednesday evening at Newton Athletic Park. The match was evenly played in the early stages with Akal FC having the best goalscoring opportunity at the 15th minute mark as Javid Khan’s shot hit the goalpost as she sailed in all alone on what appeared to be a lethal breakaway. Ten minutes later—at the 25th minute mark—Surrey United took the lead when Rizal Ganief converted a penalty kick that was awarded when he was fouled inside the penalty area by Akal’s Jesse Randhawa. Ganief himself took the penalty kick only to have goalkeeper Nuno Jesus come up with a brilliant save. Unfortunately for Jesus, and the rest of the Akal crew, the referee ruled that the goalkeeper had moved forward before the kick was taken, thus resulting in a retake of the spot shot. On his second effort, Ganief made no mistake and thus gave his team the go-ahead goal. The Firefighters increased their lead at the 38th minute mark when defender Steve McAuley rose majestically to head home a superbly taken corner kick by former Whitecap Steve Kindel. The second half insertion of yet another former Whitecap—Jeff Clarke—into the Surrey United lineup brought an extra dimension to the Firefighters’ play and, 10 minutes into the second frame, Clarke’s brilliant left wing cross found defender Mason Webb who then proceeded to head the ball into the net for what proved to be the winning goal. In the second half, Akal FC reduced the deficit at the 70th minute mark when Desmond Tachie caught the Surrey United goalkeeper—Drew Smiley—off guard as he converted a long ball into the home team’s lone goal. Five minutes later, the Firemen restored their 3-goal lead when Angus Burke continued his recent goalscoring form as he raced into the box and headed home an excellent cross from Cam Wilson. Soon thereafter, Wilson switched roles from provider to finisher when he slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the Akal net after having received a clever pass from fellow substitute Andrew Proctor. The result maintains Surrey United’s second place status, only 2 points behind the Metro-Ford Wolves, while Akal FC is getting closer and closer to the relegation zone.

COLUMBUS FC - CROATIA SC 2-1: Also on Wednesday evening, in yet another make-up game, Columbus FC remained in contention for the league title by edging the unlucky Croatia SC by a narrow 2-1 margin. The match, played at Vancouver Technical School, was well-played and very entertaining as both teams tried desperately to gather all 3 points. The Croatians got off to a flying start and came close to taking the lead on several occasions in the first half but some bad luck, some poor finishing, and some excellent goalkeeping on the part of Columbus’ Thomas Lindley, kept the game scoreless till the halftime break. In particular, Lindley made a great save on an early shot by Danny Rogic, while Chris Craveiro’s cross was headed wide by Croatia’s Cristian Tropeano. At the 33rd minute mark, Croatia SC appeared to take the lead on a diving header by Tropeano, but the goal was disallowed due to an offside infraction. Early in the second half, Lindley once again rose to the occasion as he denied Corey Sanford an excellent goalscoring opportunity with yet another fine save. Shortly thereafter, Lindley had to leave the match due to an injury and was replaced by Giordano DiPalma. As luck would have it, the Croatians took the lead a few minutes later when veteran Johnny Pashalidis cleverly beat a couple of Columbus defenders before unleashing an unstoppable shot from well outside the penalty area, a shot that bounced off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net for the go-ahead goal. The ‘Italians’ responded in kind and quickly levelled the score when Steve DeBlasio converted a well-executed pass from midfielder Robbie Cairns with a low, left-footed drive into the back of the Croatia net. Columbus FC then scored the winner, late in the match, with Steve DeBlasio becoming the provider as he sent a well-struck corner kick into the Croatia penalty box. After a wild goalmouth scramble, defender Devon Greenside finally was able to secure the victory for Columbus as he scored from close range. Defensively, Columbus’ Nathan Quan and Devon Greenside turned in superlative performances, while midfielder Robbie Cairns worked relentlessly throughout the contest. Needless to say, forward Steve DeBlasio also played extremely well as he scored a brilliant goal and assisted on the winner. For Croatia SC, defenders Corey Sanford, Darko Jelic, and Maarten Koorn kept the vaunted Columbus attackers at bay for most of the match, while veteran goalkeeper Didar Sandhu had to make a few excellent saves. The victory keeps Columbus FC in third place in the Premier Division standings, while the Croatians are uncharacteristically near the bottom of the table, with only 15 points from 15 games.

ICST PEGASUS - WEST VAN FC 1-0: On Friday evening, in a regular Day 17 game played at Newton Athletic Park, ICST Pegasus defeated the visiting West Van FC by a narrow 1-0 margin in what could be considered a mild upset. Both teams had several chances to open the scoring in the first half, with Pegasus having the better ones. Right after the opening whistle, Jag Gill almost gave Pegasus the lead when he fired a close range shot over the crossbar, with goalkeeper Tyler Silvestre well-beaten. Later in the first half, Sahil Sandhu and Omari Aldridge were both thwarted by Silvestre on glorious breakaway opportunities The score thus remained tied at 0-0 till the halftime whistle. West Van got off to a great start in the second half and came close to taking the lead but two consecutive efforts by Corey Birza were denied by excellent saves on the part of Pegasus’ goalkeeper Andy Singh. As luck would have it, however, it was the home team that took the lead at the 65th minute mark when forward Jag Gill battled tenaciously to keep possession of the ball in the middle of the part and then proceeded to send speedy Omari Aldridge on a lethal breakaway with an impeccable through ball. Aldridge made no mistake as he placed the ball behind a helpless Silvestre for the game’s lone goal. The entire Pegasus team played extremely well in earning its 6th consecutive positive result—5 victories and one tie. Special mention, however, must be made of defenders Deep Toor, Carlos Dhaliwal, Jag Sajan, and Diaz Kambere as they made life relatively easy for goalkeeper Andy Singh as he recorded the shut out. Also, forwards Sahil Sandhu and Omari Aldridge—as well as midfielder Niko Marcina—played extremely well throughout the match. The well-deserved victory improves Pegasus’ record to 7-3-7, good for 7th place in the VMSL Premier Division standings. West Van FC, on the other hand, remains in 5th place with a disappointing 8-1-7 record.

COQUITLAM METRO-FORD WOLVES - PUNJAB HURRICANES 4-0: On Saturday, at Coquitlam Town Centre, the Metro-Ford Wolves remained in first place by virtue of a rather easy 4-0 victory over the visiting Punjab Hurricanes. After a rather evenly-played, and uneventful, 20 minutes, Metro-Ford took the lead at about the 25th minute mark when former Whitecap Alfredo Valente whipped a dangerous cross into the Hurricanes’ box where young Brayden Gant took advantage of a poor clearance on the part of a Punjab defender and hammered the ball home for what proved to be the winning goal. Despite the fact that the Wolves controlled most of the play, they had to wait till the 65th minute mark to add the insurance marker to the scoresheet. On this occasion, Alfredo Valente unleashed a wicked, unstoppable drive into the top corner of the net from well outside the penalty area. Shortly thereafter, second half substitute Sang Hwang was rewarded for an excellent individual performance as he slotted the ball into the back of the Punjab net after having made an amazing run towards the goal. Near the end of the match, veteran Oliver Heald finished off the scoring when he picked up a rebound from yet another Sang Hwang shot and blasted the ball into the net from close range. Young Metro-Ford centre-backs Matt Besuschko and Paul Clerc were rock-solid throughout the match, while newly signed Anthony DiNicolo also turned in an admirable performance in his right fullback role. Another Metro-Ford youngster, Devin Phelan, was a tower of strength in the middle of the park, while veteran forward Russel Huggon drove the Punjab defenders to distraction with tireless work ethic. For the Hurricanes, midfielder Ryan Dhillon performed admirably, albeit in a losing cause. As mentioned earlier, the Wolves remain in first place as a result of the victory, with a 12-4-1 record, while the Punjab Hurricanes are still mired in penultimate place, with only 13 points from 17 games.

RICHMOND FC HIBERNIANS - AKAL FC 2-0: Also on Saturday, at Minoru Oval in Richmond, the Hibernians continued their impressive streak by winning their fifth game in a row, this one at the expense of the visiting Akal FC. The home team came out of the starting gates with determination and dominated the early part of the game. In particular, wide midfielders Alan Chivers and Chase Wickham caused the Akal defenders immense problems as they sent several dangerous crosses into the danger area. The early Richmond pressure paid off at the 15th minute mark when Taj Sangara scored the opening goal after having received a great pass from Alan Chivers. Richmond FC continued to dominate proceedings with Chase Wickham, Masumi Turnbull, and Brad Caldwell narrowly missing the net on glorious goalscoring opportunities. Defenders Stu Walters, Mike Revell, and Conor Radil were able to shut down the few Akal counter-attacks, generated mostly by Desmond Tachie. Late in the first half, the Hibernians added the insurance marker, once again scored by striker Taj Sangara. On this occasion, defender Geoff Salt intercepted an Akal pass, fed the ball to Masumi Turnball who flicked it onto the path of Sangara who calmly deposited it into the back of the Akal net. With the exception that the Hibs failed to score, the second half was more or less a repeat of the first as Richmond FC continued to carry most of the play. Numerous chances went awry as Erik Olson, Alex Orasa, Peter Chivers, and Masumi Turnbull missed the net by mere inches. The victory places the Hibs in 6th place in the VMSL Premier Division standings while Akal FC remains just a couple of points out of the dreaded relegation zone.

SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS - ICSF INTER 6-2: The last Saturday game was played at Burnaby Lake West Complex and featured the hosting ICSF Inter and Surrey United. The visiting Firefighters followed up their impressive midweek victory over Akal FC by defeating the ‘Italians’ by an elaborate 6-2 margin, thus increasing their prolific goalscoring record to 25 goals in their last 6 matches. Surrey opened the scoring at the 4th minute mark when Rizal Ganief pounced on a loose clearance, cut inside the last Inter defender, and slotted a low shot into the corner of the net. The Firemen increased their lead 10 minutes later when Jeff Clarke sent Mason Webb racing down the right flank with an exquisite pass. Webb’s subsequent low cross was then hammered home from close range by league-leading goalscorer Angus Burke as he notched his 12th goal of the season. At the 25th minute mark, Inter reduced the deficit when young midfielder Luigi Pantusa set up Sheldon Maistry who made his way into the Surrey United penalty area and unleashed an unstoppable, left-foot strike into the back of the net. Soon thereafter, the Firemen re-established their 2-goal lead when a well-struck corner kick by Steve Kindel was deflected into the net by Andrew Proctor. Surrey United then added its 4th goal of the match when substitute Cam Wilson—who had replaced an injured Lucas Barrett—side-footed an Andrew Proctor cross into the ICSF goal. Once again, however, Inter bounced back and narrowed the margin shortly before the halftime break when forward Michael Nonni was fouled just outside the Surrey United penalty area. On the ensuing free kick, Luigi Pantusa delivered a perfectly-executed shot that curled into the top corner of the net, past a bewildered Drew Smiley. Any thoughts of a further Inter comeback quickly eroded at the start of the second half when Rizal Ganief scored what could easily be described the ‘goal of the game’. After collecting the ball just inside his own half, Ganief used his speed and skill to fly by three Inter defenders on his way towards the goal. He then proceeded to hammer the ball into the net to record his second goal of the match, and tenth of the season. Surrey United rounded out the scoring ten minutes before the final whistle when former Whitecaps’ skipper Jeff Clarke blasted home a powerful left-foot shot from the top of the box, following a neat give-and-go with Cam Wilson. The result keeps Surrey United only 2 points behind the league-leading Metro-Ford Wolves, while ICSF Inter drops to 9th place with a 6-4-7 record.

COLUMBUS FC - WESTSIDE FC 0-0: The lone Sunday game was played at Andy Livingstone Park in Vancouver when Columbus FC hosted the visiting Westside FC. After a rather lacklustre 90 minutes, both teams settled for a scoreless draw—a result that prevents both teams’ efforts to climb up the ladder. Neither team created any really good goalscoring chances in the first half although Columbus was almost gifted a goal when the Columbus forwards failed to take advantage of a mix-up between Westside defender Graeme Webber and goalkeeper Rowan Anders. The ‘Italians’ came out of the second half starting blocks with a vengeance, in search of the all-important 3 points that would have kept them in the running for the league title. Very early in the second half, Columbus substitute Thomas McCole hit the goalpost with a shot that seemed destined for the back of the net, after he had rounded goalkeeper Rowan Anders with a slick move. Soon thereafter, off a Steve DeBlasio corner kick, Blair Robertson’s wicked full volley was blocked by a sprawling James Possee, thus preventing Columbus from taking the lead. The Westsiders replied in kind and also came close to taking the lead on a couple of occasions. On the first, Gavin Barrett barely missed the wide open net from close range while on the second attempt, Sebastian Crema was thwarted by a foot save from Columbus’ goalkeeper Giordano DiPalma as Crema sailed in on goal on a breakaway. Columbus defenders Devon Greenside and Nathan Quan worked tirelessly, giving the Westside attackers very little space. At the other end of the pitch, Graeme Webber and James Possee turned in excellent performances in keeping the always dangerous Columbus attackers at bay. Westside midfielders Indy Khabra and Jay Kent-Hume also deserve special mention for their work rate and composure in the middle of the park. Columbus’ Giordano DiPalma and Westside’s Rowan Anders recorded the clean sheets in their respective nets. The result leaves Columbus in third place on the VMSL’s Premier Division table, while Westside FC is now in a 7th place tie with ICST Pegasus, with a 6-6-5 record.

DELTA UNITED - CROATIA SC 2-0: On Wednesday evening, at John Oliver Park in Delta, the hosting Delta United shut out the visiting Croatians by a 2-0 margin after a hard-fought 90 minutes of non-stop action. Delta United got off to a great start as newly-signed Gibson Bardsley forced Croatia’s goalkeeper Didar Sandhu to make an outstanding save. Shortly thereafter, at about the 7th minute mark, Bardsley hooked up with another new signee—Oscar Jimenez—to score the opening goal. Jimenez’ well-placed corner kick was volleyed into the back of the Croatia net by Bardsley, giving Sandhu no chance whatsoever. Delta United kept pressing and added its second goal at the 13th minute mark when Harp Khakh sent Bardsley flying down the right flank with a great through ball. Bardsley proceeded to cross the ball onto the foot of Brent Livingstone, whose unstoppable one-timer gave Delta what proved to be an insurmountable lead. Despite the fact that the Croatians tried desperately to get back in the game, and controlled most of the play in the second half, the Delta United defence—led by Steve Millar and John Blair—allowed very few clear-cut scoring opportunities, making life relatively easy for goalkeeper Steve London as he registered yet another shutout. Young midfielder Brent Livingstone also defended tenaciously as he held former professional Johnny Sulentic at bay for most of the game. Delta’s well-deserved victory improves their record to 10-1-5, good for 4th place in the VMSL’s Premier Division standings, while Croatia SC is still in the danger area, with a mediocre 4-3-9 record.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS for their excellent performances in their emphatic victories over Akal FC and ICSF Inter. After defeating the struggling Akal FC by a 5-1 margin on Wednesday evening, Surrey United clobbered the talented ICSF Inter by an unexpected 6-2 scoreline on Saturday. In so doing, the Firemen remained in contention for the coveted VMSL Premier Division title—only two points behind the league-leading Metro-Ford Wolves.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Richmond FC’s forward TAJ SANGARA for his brilliant 2-goal performance in his team’s 2-0 victory over Akal FC. Not only did Sangara score two excellent goals, but he also led his team to its 5th consecutive victory with his indomitable work rate and amazing speed and skill. For his excellent performance, TAJ SANGARA will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2011-01-14.

PREMIER DIVISION – DAY 18

One huge upset took place this past weekend as all 14 Premier Division teams returned to action after the yearly Christmas break. In fact, on Sunday afternoon, the struggling Croatia SC defeated the high-flying Metro-Ford Wolves by a well-deserved 2-0 margin. As a result, not only did the Croatians elevate themselves out of the relegation zone but they also dropped the Wolves into second place, one point behind the defending champions Surrey United Firefighters. At the bottom of the table, the Punjab Hurricanes—as a result of their 4-2 victory at the expense of ICSF Inter—also climbed out of the relegation area, while Akal FC dropped to 12th place by virtue of their 4-1 loss to Delta United.

WEST VAN FC - COLUMBUS FC 0-0: Two of the top teams in the VMSL’s Premier Division—West Van FC and Columbus FC—faced off on a windy and chilly Friday evening at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver. After an evenly-played 90 minutes of non-stop action, the two teams settled for a disappointing scoreless draw, a result that helps neither team. Neither side was able to take full control of the match and, in the end, the final result appeared to be a fair one. Columbus got off to a great start and came very close to taking the lead in the early going when newly-signed forward Thomas McCole chipped the ball over goalkeeper Marco Durante only to have the ball hit the crossbar. Columbus also came close to scoring early in the second half but a close-range shot by Stefano Pannu was well-saved by Durante. To add insult to Columbus’ injury, Durante also denied Steve DeBlasio with a brilliant save as Columbus’ captain picked up the rebound and half-volleyed the ball towards the net. At the other end of the pitch, the former Trollers—led by Paul Dailly’s patented free kicks and corner kicks—also had some excellent scoring chances but Kevin Crouch and Max Baessato sent their headers just over the crossbar. Near the end of the match, Marco Durante pulled off another excellent save on a close-range shot by Robbie Cairns while Paul Dailly watched agonizingly as his well-driven free kick bounced off the crossbar with goalkeeper Giordano Di Palma well beaten. Defensively, Columbus’ Jonathan Poli and Devon Greenside were rock-solid, while West Van’s veteran midfielder Paul Dailly was his usual brilliant self for the entire 90 minutes of action.

PUNJAB HURRICANES - ICSF INTER 4-2: Also on Friday evening, at Tom Binnie Field in Surrey, the unpredictable Punjab Hurricanes climbed out of the dreaded relegation zone by defeating the hot-and-cold ICSF Inter by a 4-2 margin. The Hurricanes got off to a bright start and almost took the early lead at the 10th minute mark when Derrick Bassi volleyed a great cross from Gary Badesha just wide of the target. The Hurricanes kept pressing and, a few minutes later, Joti Thind was robbed by a great save on the part of Inter’s goalkeeper Erman Ozkan. Shortly thereafter, Thind fired a wicked shot from the edge of the penalty area just over the crossbar. As often happens, however, it was Inter that took the lead at the 33rd minute mark when Luigi Pantusa unleashed a long-range, left-footed shot from well outside the penalty area, a shot that found the back of the far corner of the Punjab net. A few minutes later, however, the Hurricanes responded in kind as Bobby Jhutty tied things up on yet another laser-beam of a shot from the edge of the penalty area. Near the end of the first half, the Hurricanes came close to taking the lead on a couple of occasions but Ryan Dhillon’s effort was well-saved by Ozkan, while Pami Birring’s header bounced off the crossbar. Early in the second half, however, the Punjab Hurricanes finally took the lead when Joti Thind outmuscled Inter’s defender Jesse Dhami before placing a perfect pass onto the path of Pami Birring who made no mistake in finishing from close range. ICSF Inter bounced back and tied things up a few minutes later when Lui Pantusa repeated his earlier effort as he blasted a clinical left-foot shot into the net from the left corner of the penalty area. At this point, Inter appeared to take control of the match and attacked furiously in search of what would have been the winning goal. As luck would have it, however, it was the Hurricanes that managed to score two late goals—albeit against the run of play. At the 87th minute mark, Bobby Jhutty scored what proved to be the winning goal when his rather harmless shot inexplicably found the back of the net past goalkeeper Erman Ozkan. Well into injury time, the Hurricanes added their insurance marker when Ryan Dhillon was sent flying on a lethal counter-attack by Gary Badesha. Dhillon made no mistake and put the ‘Italians’ out of their misery with the Hurricanes’ fourth goal. As mentioned earlier, the Hurricanes’ victory elevated them to 11th place, one point ahead of Akal FC, while Inter remains in 9th place with a 6-4-8 record.

WESTSIDE FC - SAPPERTON ROVERS 1-1: On Saturday, at Andy Livingstone Park in Vancouver, Westside FC and the Sapperton Rovers settled for a 1-1 tie after a rather uneventful 90 minutes of play as both teams showed some post-Christmas rust. At the 20th minute mark the game appeared to take a bad turn for the Rovers as their goalkeeper—Garth Lagasse—was ejected for reacting rather violently to a challenge from Ian Sandilands. Shortly thereafter, at about the 35th minute mark, the Westsiders took advantage of the situation and took the lead when James Brown struck an unstoppable half-volley from well outside the penalty area, a shot that bounced off the underside of the crossbar and into the Sapperton net, past substitute goalkeeper Simon Postma. To the Rovers’ credit, they kept working hard and, despite being shorthanded, they pressed for the equalizer for the remainder of the match. Sapperton’s best goalscoring opportunity came midway through the second half when Rob Sing fired a close-range shot towards the Westside net, only to have goalkeeper Rowan Anders come up with an unbelievable save. Near the end of the game the Rovers finally knotted the score when veteran striker Ted Ullrich was fouled inside the penalty area, resulting in a penalty kick being awarded. Mark McQuade made no mistake on the spot shot as he clinically drove the ball past Anders for the tying goal. Westside’s forward James Brown not only scored his team’s lone goal but was a going concern throughout the match—particularly on second half counter-attacks. Goalkeeper Rowan Anders also turned in an excellent performance as he made numerous saves to keep Westside in the game against the very hungry Rovers. For Sapperton, defender Jeff Rogers, as well as midfielders Colin Phillips and Rob Sing, played extremely well for their shorthanded squad. The result keeps Westside FC in the middle of the pack, while Sapperton is still in the relegation zone, with an unimpressive 3-5-9 record.

SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS - ICST PEGASUS 2-0: On Saturday, at Cloverdale Athletic Park, the Surrey United Firefighters took over sole possession of first place by recording their 4th consecutive victory—this one at the expense of the visiting ICST Pegasus lads. The Firefighters got the early boost they were looking for when they took the lead at the 8th minute mark with a play that was started and finished by Cam Wilson. His original great pass sent Andrew Proctor racing down the right flank while Wilson continued his run into the Pegasus penalty area where he rose superbly to head home Proctor’s brilliant cross. The game then swayed back and forth for the remainder of the first half with Surrey United creating the better chances but failing to hit the target. At the other end of the pitch, Pegasus’ Diaz Kambere twice saw his shots narrowly miss the net, while United’s Rizal Ganief and Andrew Proctor had their efforts cleared off the line. Very late in the first half, Surrey’s goalkeeper—Paul Shepherd—came up with a phenomenal save as he denied Jag Gill the equalizer as Gill raced in on a breakaway. Early in the second half, Andrew Proctor was once again instrumental in setting up the Firemen’s insurance marker when his splendid through ball sent Angus Burke racing past the heart of the Pegasus defence. Burke—the Premier Division top goalscorer—then proceeded to hammer a powerful, rising shot into the top corner of the net for his 13th goal of the season. Pegasus battled back tenaciously and came close to scoring on a few occasions but quality crosses by Omari Aldridge, Sahil Sandhu, and Nico Marcina were not converted. Very late in the match, Pegasus’ Meysam Soltani fired his close-range shot just wide of the net with Paul Shepherd well beaten. The Firefighters’ make-shift backline—Rob Wilson, Vinny Stewart, Mason Webb, and Tom Lowndes—kept the speedy and lively Pegasus attackers at bay for most of the contest, while Paul Shepherd fully deserved his clean sheet with yet another solid performance. As mentioned earlier, Surrey United is now alone in first place with a one point lead over the Metro-Ford Wolves. Pegasus, on the other hand, remains in the middle of the pack—with a 7-3-8 record.

RICHMOND FC HIBERNIANS - SERBIAN WHITE EAGLES 2-0: On Sunday, at Burnaby Lake West Complex, the Hibernians continued their impressive unbeaten streak by defeating the struggling White Eagles by a 2-0 margin. The visitors got off to a flying start as left winger Craig McMillan opened the scoring at the 3rd minute mark as he muscled his way past the Serbian defenders before hammering the ball into the back of the net with an unstoppable shot. The rest of the first half was very evenly played with both teams playing very cautiously in fear of surrendering a goal. In the second half, the White Eagles threw caution to the wind and began pressing in search of the equalizer. However, the Richmond backline—composed of Connor Radil, Mike Revell, Stuart Walters, and Geoff Salt—defended extremely well and limited the Serbian goalscoring chances to a minimum. The White Eagles came close to scoring on a couple of occasions but some brilliant goalkeeping on the part of Luke O’Shea preserved the clean sheet for the Hibs. In particular, an excellent effort by Nemanja Okuka was palmed away by a diving O’Shea. As luck would have it, however, it was the Hibernians that were able to double their lead midway through the second half when Taj Sangara tapped home a rebound after Peter Chivers’ low shot was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Richard Goddard. At this point, the home team took control of the proceedings and could have scored a couple of more goals but chances by Alan Chivers, Craig McMillan, and Brad Caldwell all went awry. Central midfielder Peter Chivers played extremely well for the winning team, while newly-transferred Mladen Ljumovic turned in an excellent performance in the Serbian midfield. The result elevates the Hibernians to 5th place in the VMSL Premier Division standings, while the White Eagles remain mired at the bottom of the table.

DELTA UNITED - AKAL FC 4-1: Also on Sunday, at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey, the red-hot Delta United easily defeated the struggling Akal FC by a resounding 4-1 margin. Needless to say, the visitors dominated the entire 90 minutes of play and the score could have been even more elaborate if Akal’s goalkeeper—Nuno Jesus—had not pulled a few outstanding saves. Delta United almost took the lead at the very start of the match when Gibson Bardsley waltzed around the entire Akal backline before having his side-footed shot blocked by Jesus. Midway through the first half, Bardsley again came close to scoring as he volleyed a fine cross from Mike Gomes just over the crossbar. Shortly thereafter, it was Oscar Jimenez’ turn to miss a glorious opportunity as he was set up by a great pass from Harpreet Khakh. Once again, however, Jesus came to the rescue with a fine save and kept the game scoreless till the halftime whistle. The second half was more or less a repeat of the first except that Delta United was finally able to score some goals! Ten minutes into the second half, Delta took the well-deserved lead when Mike Gomes raced down the left flank before cutting the ball back onto the path of Harpreet Khakh who proceeded to hammer it home for the opening goal. A few minutes later, Gibson Bardsley scored what proved to be the winning goal after he had been sent in all alone by Oscar Jimenez. At about the 80th minute mark, Akal FC narrowed the margin when Emmanuel Ayiku pounced on a loose ball inside the penalty area and blasted it home. However, the visitors kept pressing and scored two late goals to put the game out of Akal’s reach. The third Delta goal was scored by Mike Gomes as he tapped in a rebound after Nuno Jesus had made yet another great save on a Gibson Bardsley shot. Then, with only a couple of minutes remaining in the match, Bardsley and Brian Fowler combined to set up Oscar Jimenez who drove the ball into the net from well inside the penalty area. Veterans Woody Bradford and Steve Millar played extremely well in their defensive roles for Delta United, while Akal midfielder Harry Lakhan worked hard all game long, albeit in a losing cause. The result catapults Delta United ahead of Columbus FC into 3rd place in the Premier Division standings, while Akal FC is now mired in the relegation zone, with an unimpressive 3-6-9 record.

CROATIA SC - METRO-FORD WOLVES 2-0: The third Sunday game was played at Andy Livingstone Park in Vancouver between Croatia SC and the Coquitlam Metro-Ford Wolves. The talented, but under-achieving, Croatians were able to defeat the Premier Division leaders by a well-earned 2-0 margin and thus pull off what could be described as the upset of the season! The game got off to a great start as both teams seemed eager to score the opening goal, attacked aggressively, and created several excellent goalscoring opportunities. Croatia’s Johnny Sulentic almost gave his team the early lead—after he had been set up by Kresimir Bebic—but Metro-Ford’s goalkeeper—Lucas Menz—was equal to the task and pulled off a great save. At the other end of the pitch, Croatia’s goalkeeper—Didar Sandhu—made an excellent save on a Russel Huggon shot, after Huggon had been set up by Alfredo Valente. Midway through the first half, Croatia SC took the lead when a long punt by goalkeeper Sandhu found Johnny Sulentic who proceeded to outmuscle a Metro-Ford defender and then chip the ball into the net, over an onrushing Lucas Menz. The second half was more or less a repeat of the first with the Wolves trying hard to get back into the game. However, some solid defending on the part of Jure Krpan and veteran Darko Jelic, as well as some excellent goalkeeping by Didar Sandhu kept the score at 1-0 till the 78th minute mark. In particular, Sandhu pulled off a brilliant save on a shot by Jovan Blagojevic midway though the second half. However, at the 78th minute mark, Croatia SC put the game out of the Wolves’ reach when veterans Chris Craveiro and Darko Jelic combined to set up Johnny Sulentic who first-timed the ball into the bottom corner of the net for what proved to be the insurance marker. The entire Croatian team played very well but special mention should be made of young midfielder Phil Kotter who dictated the pace of the match for the entire 90 minutes with his indomitable tenacity and wonderful ball distribution. Metro-Ford’s second half substitute—outside midfielder Sang Hwang—also performed admirably, albeit in a losing cause. The all-important victory elevates the Croatians out of the relegation zone, while the Wolves drop to second place as a result of their loss.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: CROATIA SC for its amazing performance in defeating the highly-favoured Metro-Ford Wolves by a well-earned 2-0 margin. Led by former professional Johnny Sulentic’s two goals, as well as the midfield play of young Phil Kotter, the Croatians climbed out of the dreaded relegation zone as a result of their impressive victory.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Croatia SC’s midfielder PHIL KOTTER for his superlative performance in his team’s 2-0 upset victory over the Coquitlam Metro-Ford Wolves. Despite his young age, Kotter played the part of a general during the entire match. Not only did he win numerous tackles with his incredible work rate, but he also created several goalscoring opportunities with his impeccable ball distribution. For his excellent performance, PHIL KOTTER will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2011-01-27.

Re:

the score could have been even more elaborate if Jesus had not pulled a few outstanding saves.

Delta United almost took the lead at the very start of the match when Gibson Bardsley waltzed around the entire Akal backline before having his side-footed shot blocked by Jesus.

Once again, however, Jesus came to the rescue with a fine save and kept the game scoreless till the halftime whistle.

Jesus had made yet another great save on a Gibson Bardsley shot.

I guess it really is true.

Unfortunately for Jesus, and the rest of the Akal crew, the referee ruled that the goalkeeper had moved forward before the kick was taken, thus resulting in a retake of the spot shot.
The lord works in funny ways sometimes.

PREMIER DIVISION – DAY 19

Only 5 of the scheduled 7 games were played this past weekend since a couple of matches had to be postponed due to the closure of grass fields. The standings remained more or less the same with the Surrey United Firefighters still in first place as a result of their convincing 2-0 victory over Columbus FC. At the bottom of the table, the Punjab Hurricanes won their second consecutive game—this one at the expense of Croatia SC—and thus climbed into 10th place, 4 points out of the relegation zone. Akal FC, however, continued to struggle by dropping at 4-2 decision to the Metro-Ford Wolves and therefore remained in 12th place.

ICST PEGASUS - ICSF INTER 3-1: On Saturday, at Burnaby Lake West Complex, Pegasus defeated Inter by a clear-cut 3-1 margin and thus climbed into sole possession of sixth place in the Premier Division standings. The visitors controlled most of the action and had the majority of goalscoring chances throughout the contest. At the 10th minute mark, Azad Palani gave Pegasus the lead when he deflected a Jag Gill free kick into the back of the net from close range. Shortly thereafter, Omari Aldridge came close to doubling the Pegasus lead but his close range shot was blocked by an Inter defender. The ‘Italians’ replied in kind and came close to knotting the score when young Domenic Delli Santi blasted a wicked drive towards the Pegasus net from the edge of the penalty area, only to have goalkeeper Andy Singh come up with a fine save. Late in the first half, Pegasus’ Sahil Sandhu—after having made a fine individual run—blasted the ball just wide of the Inter net, thus keeping the score at 1-0 till the halftime whistle. Very early in the second half, Inter was able to equalize when young Luigi Pantusa headed home a well-taken free kick by Joseph Marrello. However, Pegasus battled back and regained the lead a few minutes later when Azad Palani scored his second goal of the match—and his 7th of the season—when he headed home a brilliant cross from the foot of Omari Aldridge. At the 70th minute mark, Pegasus scored the insurance marker when second half substitute Maysam Soltani neatly placed a shot into the bottom corner of the Inter net after some fine build-up by Omari Aldridge and Diaz Kambere. The visitors could have added a couple of more goals to their margin of victory in the late stages of the match, but efforts by Ryan Powell and Sahil Sandhu went awry. Defensively, Pegasus’ Jag Sajan and Diaz Kambere played extremely well, while Niko Marcina and Adam Costley controlled the middle of the park virtually flawlessly. For Inter, defenders Michael Winter and Milos Jeftic—as well as goalkeeper Erman Ozkan—were towers of strength throughout the match, as they managed to keep the scoreline respectable. The victory improves Pegasus’ record to an even 8-3-8, while Inter remains in 9th place, with 22 points from 19 games.

COQUITLAM METRO-FORD WOLVES - AKAL FC 4-2: Also on Saturday, at Coquitlam Town Centre, the Metro-Ford Wolves remained in contention for the Premier Division title by defeating the struggling Akal FC by a 4-2 margin. In the first half, the visitors twice took the lead, only to have the Wolves knot the score on two separate occasions. At about the 15th minute mark, a well-taken corner kick by Akal’s Desmond Tachie was converted into the opening goal by an opportunistic Arash Afrooze to give his team the early lead. The Wolves came back with a vengeance and tied things up when veteran Russel Huggon hammered home a loose ball from inside the penalty area. However, at about the 33rd minute mark, Akal FC regained the lead when Arash Afrooze was fouled at the edge of the penalty area. On the ensuing free kick, Emmanuel Bentil curled a lethal shot around the wall and into the top corner of the Metro-Ford net, past goalkeeper Lucas Menz. Just before the halftime whistle, the Wolves once again tied things up when young Brayden Gant rose above all the defenders and managed to head a well-struck corner kick by Emilio Bottiglieri into the Akal net. The second half belonged entirely to the Metro-Ford Wolves as they created numerous goalscoring chances before finally taking the lead. In particular, efforts by Russel Huggon and Carlo Basso went awry as they both inexplicably missed the net from close range. As luck would have it, however, it was Basso and Huggon that scored Metro-Ford’s two goals in the latter part of the game to clinch the victory. On the first goal, Basso flicked home what proved to be the winning goal after having received an exquisite through ball from Huggon. Late in the match, Huggon himself scored his 12th goal of the season as he raced in on goal on a breakaway, after having been set up by young Devin Phelan. Veteran defender Emilio Bottiglieri played extremely well for the Wolves, while midfielder Devin Phelan was rock-solid throughout the contest. The victory leaves the Wolves one point behind league-leading Surrey United, while Akal FC remains in the dreaded relegation zone, with an unenviable 3-6-10 record.

PUNJAB HURRICANES - CROATIA SC 1-0: Also on Saturday, at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey, the Punjab Hurricanes won their second game in a row, this one by a 1-0 margin at the expense of the hot-and-cold Croatia SC. Both teams tried hard to gain to all-important 3 points as the match was hard-fought and quite evenly-played. At the 23rd minute mark, the Croatians almost took the lead when Gustavo Argueta laid a perfect square ball onto the path of Phil Kotter, whose close-range shot was brilliantly saved by the Hurricanes’ goalkeeper, Sheldon Steenhuis. Shortly thereafter, it was the Hurricanes’ turn to miss a glorious goalscoring opportunity when Pami Birring’s header—on a great cross from Josh Bennett—sailed just over the crossbar. Then, at the 34th minute mark, Cam Hundal’s effort from the edge of the 6-yard box was brilliantly saved by Croatia’s goalkeeper, Didar Sandhu. To add insult to the Hurricanes’ injury, Hundal then sent the rebound over the crossbar. Early in the second half, Croatia’s Darko Jelic and Phil Kotter combined to set up Kresimir Bebic, whose subsequent shot barely missed the net. At the other end of the pitch, Didar Sandhu once again pulled off an amazing save, this one on a shot by Punjab’s Joti Thind. A few minutes later, Sandhu once again robbed Thind whose shot seemed destined for the back of the net. The Croatians replied in kind when Andrew Sciampacone set up Corey Sanford with an immaculate pass. Unfortunately for Sanford, and the entire Croatia clan, his shot went wide of the net. At the 80th minute mark, the Hurricanes were able to break the stalemate when Joti Thind finally managed to beat Didar Sandhu with a fine shot, after having been set up by Josh Bennett. Late in the match, playing-coach Josip Maras came close to knotting the score for the Croatians on a couple of occasions. However, goalkeeper Sheldon Steenhuis made a brilliant save on Maras’ first effort while the second shot barely missed the net. Punjab’s striker Joti Thind was a going concern throughout the match, while defenders Derrick Bassi, Joey Brar, Gurj Sandhu, and Daniel Badesha were able to shut down the vaunted Croatian attack and preserve the clean sheet for goalkeeper Sheldon Steenhuis. Croatia’s midfielders—Corey Sanford, Phil Kotter, Andrew Sciampacone, and Matteo Agnoloni—also played extremely well, albeit in a losing cause. The result improves the Hurricanes’ chances of avoiding relegation, while the Croatians are now in 11th place with a 5-3-10 record.

RICHMOND FC HIBERNIANS - WESTSIDE FC 1-1: The last Saturday game was played at Minoru Oval in Richmond and featured two middle of the pack clubs: the hosting Richmond Hibernians and the visiting Westsiders. After a very competitive and hard-fought 90 minutes of action, both teams had to settle for a 1-1 tie, a result that most spectators would consider to be a fair one. Richmond FC had control of the match for the first 20 minutes and could easily have taken the early lead had it not been for some outstanding goalkeeping on the part of Westside’s Rowan Anders. In particular, Anders made a phenomenal save on a shot by Taj Sangara as the Hibs’ striker raced in on goal on a partial breakaway after having received a fine pass from Chase Wickham. The Hibernians also came close to scoring a short time later, but Brad Caldwell watched agonizingly as his powerful shot hit the outside of the goalpost. At this juncture, the Westsiders finally found their legs and started to get into the game. At about the 30th minute mark, Westside FC took the lead when Jay Kent-Hume finished off a goal mouth scramble when he spectacularly scored the go-ahead goal on an unstoppable, overhead scissors kick. Early in the second half, Richmond FC knotted the score when Alan Chivers picked up a loose ball in the middle of the park, dribbled by a few Westside defenders, and unleashed an unstoppable, blistering shot into the back of the net from about 30 yards out. The remainder of the game was hard-fought with both teams trying desperately to score what would have been the winning goal. In particular, James Brown and Brian Reems came close to scoring for Westside FC, while Chase Wickham and Peter Chivers were denied clear-cut scoring chances by goalkeeper Rowan Anders. For the Hibs, striker Brad Caldwell, defender Connor Radil, and midfielders Peter Chivers and Chase Wickham turned in superlative performances. Needless to say, goalkeeper Rowan Anders was the key man in the Westside line-up as he pulled off numerous brilliant saves. As well, defenders Graeme Webber and Taku Bradshaw performed admirably throughout the entire match.

SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS - COLUMBUS FC 2-0: The lone Sunday game was played at Point Grey School in Vancouver between two of the top teams in the VMSL’s Premier Division: the hosting Columbus FC and the visiting Surrey United Firefighters. At the end of the day, the Firemen walked away with yet another victory, this one by a 2-0 margin. The visitors almost took the lead at the 10th minute mark when Ryan Reynolds, after having received a great pass from Cam Wilson, barely missed the Columbus net. However, the Firefighters kept pressing and were finally rewarded at the 25th minute mark with Reynolds and Wilson once again involved in the play. On this occasion Reynolds won the ball in the middle of the park and found a streaking Wilson on the right flank. After having beaten a couple of Columbus defenders, Wilson proceeded to set up a wide-open Angus Burke who made no mistake in slotting the ball home for his 14th goal of the season. Moments later, Columbus FC had a great chance to tie the game as forward Justin Carvery unleashed a wicked shot from the edge of the penalty area, only to have the ball hit the crossbar and bounce out of danger. Just before the halftime whistle, Surrey United scored what proved to be the insurance marker when a cross by newly-signed Tom Lowndes was headed home by Rizal Ganief from close range. During the entire second half, the ‘Italians’ pressed hard but were unable to create any real goalscoring opportunities, mostly due to the excellent play of defenders Steve MacAuley, Brad Petoom, Steve Kindel, and Tom Lowndes, who made life relatively easy for goalkeeper Paul Shephard as he recorded yet another shutout. Despite the loss, Columbus’ central defender Jonathan Poli played extremely well as he anchored his backline brilliantly, albeit in a losing cause. The victory keeps Surrey United in first place, while Columbus FC is still in fourth spot in the Premier Division standings.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS for their clinical performance in defeating the very tough and determined Columbus FC by a well-deserved 2-0 margin. Led by defenders Steve McAuley, Brad Petoom, Steve Kindel, and Tom Lowndes, the Firemen kept the vaunted Columbus attackers at bay for the entire contest. As a result of the victory, Surrey United remains in first place, with a one-point edge of the Metro-Ford Wolves.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Westside FC’s goalkeeper ROWAN ANDERS for his remarkable performance in his team’s 1-1 tie with the red-hot Richmond FC Hibernians. Time after time Anders came up with brilliant saves thus keeping his team in the game. For his excellent performance, ROWAN ANDERS will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2011-02-04.

PREMIER DIVISION – DAY 20

All 7 scheduled Premier Division games—plus a couple of midweek make-ups—were played this past weekend. Once again, the standings remained more or less the same, despite the fact that Akal FC’s victory over the Punjab Hurricanes narrowed the gap between the two teams near the bottom of the table. Surrey United remained one point ahead of the Metro-Ford Wolves at the top of the standings by easily defeating the hot-and-cold Sapperton Rovers, while ICST Pegasus soundly trashed Columbus FC 4-0 in what could be considered an upset. The Richmond Hibernians—after having been held to a 2-2 tie on Wednesday evening by the struggling Croatia SC—pulled off another semi-upset by defeating West Van FC by a 2-0 margin.

CROATIA SC - RICHMOND FC HIBERNIANS 2-2: On Wednesday evening, at Andy Livingstone Park in Vancouver, the visiting Hibernians were held to a 2-2 tie by the struggling Croatians in a Day 16 make-up game. Croatia SC got off to a great start and almost took the early lead at the 15th minute mark when veteran Chris Craveiro’s wicked long-range shot was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Luke O’Shea. On the ensuing rebound, Cristian Tropeano barely missed to target, thus keeping the game scoreless. Shortly thereafter, however, the Hibernians took the lead when a long free kick by Mike Revell was headed onto the path of Taj Sangara by forward Brad Caldwell. Sangara then proceeded to clinically slot the ball past goalkeeper Didar Sandhu for the go-ahead goal. Just before the halftime whistle, the Chivers brothers—Peter and Alan—combined to give Richmond a 2-0 lead when midfielder Peter Chivers sent Alan Chivers down the right flank with an immaculate pass. Alan Chivers’ subsequently drilled a low cross into the 6-yard box, a cross that was inadvertently deflected into the net by Croatia’s Jure Krpan. The Croatians bounced back in the second half and got back into the game very early when Kresimir Bebic and Selim Nahdi combined to set up veteran Darko Jelic who volleyed Nahdi’s final pass into the back of the Richmond net from the far post. Then, at the 60th minute mark, Jelic became the provider as he combined with Bebic to set up Phil Kotter who ripped the ball into the net from close range for the equalizer. The rest of the match was fairly evenly played as both teams tried hard, but unsuccefully, to get the all-important winning goal.

SAPPERTON ROVERS - SERBIAN WHITE EAGLES 1-0: Also on Wednesday evening, at Vancouver Technical School, the Sapperton Rovers managed to edge the virtually relegated Serbian White Eagles by a narrow 1-0 margin in a Day 17 make-up game. The lone goal of the match was scored very early—at about the 5th minute mark—when a great cross by Nico Verseveldt was brilliantly headed home by Sven Wagner. The Rovers kept pressing and almost doubled their margin on efforts by Ted Ullrich and Jason Pierotti, but their chances went awry. The Serbians battled back tenaciously in the second half and came close to scoring on a couple of occasions on efforts by Milan Dragutinovic and Juan Sanchez. However, Sapperton’s goalkeeper—Simon Postma—rose to the occasion both times and retained his clean sheet. Late in the match, the Rovers also came close to scoring what would have been the insurance marker, but Matt Rosenlund and Jay Gangnes were unable to finish what appeared to be golden opportunities. Midfielder Kevin Booker, defender Nico Verseveldt, and forward Jason Pierotti played exctremely well for the Sapperton Rovers, while defenders Sava Miljanic and Stefan Kalaba turned in solid performances in the White Eagles’ backline.

ICST PEGASUS - COLUMBUS FC 4-0: The lone Friday evening game took place at Newton Athletic Park between two teams near the top of the Premier Division table: the hosting ICST Pegasus and the visiting Columbus FC. At the end of the day, Pegasus walked away with a well-earned 4-0 victory at the expense of the under-staffed ‘Italians’. The home team took the lead at about the 15th minute mark when Ryan Powell converted an excellent cross by Azad Palani into what proved to be the winning goal. Shortly thereafter, Pegasus’ coach—Rob Reed—was ejected from the technical area for overly-disputing a referee’s decision. In the second half, Pegasus doubled its lead at the 60th minute mark when former Whitecap Diaz Kambere drove home a first-time shot from the edge of the penalty area. To add insult to Columbus’ injury, defender Jonathan Poli was ejected shortly thereafter for a serious foul play infraction against Pegasus’ Adam Costley. Two more red cards were issued a few minutes later, one to each team as Pegasus’ Carlos Dhaliwal and Columbus’ Steve DeBlasio were both ejected for having received their second caution. At the 80th minute mark, young Sahil Sandhu put the game out of Columbus’ reach as he scored Pegasus’ third goal after having been sent on a breakaway by Robby Toor. Just before the final whistle, Columbus’ newly-signed Graham Smith was also ejected for having received his second caution—this one for having handled the ball inside the penalty area. On the ensuing penalty kick, Niko Marcina easily scored Pegasus’ fourth, and final, goal. Pegasus’ young attacking midfielder—former professional Sahil Sandhu—was a going concern throughout the contest as he drove the Columbus’ defenders to distraction with his pace, unbelievable footwork, and immaculate passing. Goalkeeper Amar Dhinsa recorded the shutout, probably the easiest of his career since Columbus did not have many goalscoring opportunities. The victory improves Pegasus’ record to 9-3-8, while Columbus remains in fourth place with 33 points from 20 games.

WESTSIDE FC - DELTA UNITED 0-0: On Saturday, at Andy Livingstone Park, Westside FC held the aspiring Delta United to a scoreless tie after a rather poorly played 90 minutes. As expected, most of the game was played in the Westside end of the field as the home team relied mostly on its defensive tactics. Having said that, Delta United showed very little urgency and, as a result, was unable to penetrate the barricaded Westside defensive wall. Defensively, Delta’s Woody Bradford, Brian Fowler, Steve Millar, and Jake Starheim made life relatively easy for goalkeeper Steve London as he recorded yet another clean sheet. Delta’s Brian Gebbie controlled the middle of the park with his excellent ball skills and enormous work rate, while forward Garrett Peters tried desperately to penetrate the Westside defense throughout the match, albeit unsuccessfully. For Westside, defenders Graeme Webber, Sam Wallace, Brian Reems, and particularly Andrew Czalij were rock-solid as they kept Delta’s vaunted attackers at bay during the entire match. Midfielder Michael Buree worked hard during the entire match on the right flank, while goalkeeper Rowan Anders recorded the shutout for Westside FC. The result leaves Delta United in 3rd place, with a 11-2-5 record, while Westside FC remains in the middle of the pack with 27 points from 20 games.

RICHMOND FC HIBERNIANS - WEST VAN FC 2-0: Also on Saturday, at Minoru Oval, the Hibernians maintained their impressive 9-game undefeated streak by defeating West Van FC by a 2-0 margin. The initial part of the first half was quite evenly played with both teams taking turns attacking and defending. However, at the 30th minute mark, the Hibs took the lead when Brad Caldwell calmly tapped home a clever pass by Alan Chivers for what proved to be the winning goal. The play originated from a great through ball played by midfielder Masumi Turnbull to Chase Wickham, whose subsequent hard, low cross was redirected by Chivers onto the path of a wide-open Caldwell. A few minutes later, Caldwell went from hero to villain when he inexplicably missed the net after having received a glorious pass from Taj Sangara. The Hibernians, however, continued to press and came close to scoring what would have been the insurance marker late in the first half, but a phenomenal save by West Van’s goalkeeper—Marco Durante—on a blistering shot by Taj Sangara kept the score at 1-0 till the halftime whistle. The second half was more or less a repeat of the first as Richmond FC exerted more pressure and kept the former Trollers on their heels. However, midway through the second half, West Van FC came very close to knotting the score when forward Kevin Crouch’s header was brilliantly saved by Richmond’s goalkeeper, Luke O’Shea. Shortly thereafter, the Hibernians finally scored the much-needed insurance goal when Taj Sangara took advantage of a long punt by goalkeeper Luke O’Shea, raced in all alone and—after having his initial shot saved by Durante—finished off the rebound into the empty net. Sangara almost added Richmond’s third goal a few minutes later, but his wicked shot bounced off the post, with Durante well-beaten. Late in the match, O’Shea preserved his shutout with yet another brilliant save, this one on a shot by Ryan Glanville. The entire Richmond FC team played remarkably well, but special mention should be made of strikers Brad Caldwell and Taj Sangara as they drove the West Van defenders to distraction during the entire match with their indomitable work ethic. Also, Luke O’Shea fully earned his clean sheet with some excellent goalkeeping, albeit aided and abetted by defenders Mike Revell, Stu Walters, Tim Sowerby, and Rory Gattens. As a result of their hard-earned victory, the Hibernians now find themselves only one point behind 3rd place Columbus, with a game in hand. On the other hand, West Van FC remains in the middle of the pack, with an even 8-2-8 record.

SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS - SAPPERTON ROVERS 5-0: The first Sunday game was played at Cloverdale Athletic Park between the hosting Firefighters and the visiting Rovers. After a very one-sided 90 minutes, the home team laid claim to the all-important 3 points by virtue of a clear-cut 5-0 victory. The Firefighters started the game in a determined fashion and only two great saves by Sapperton’s goalkeeper Simon Postma denied Surrey strikers Angus Burke and Andrew Proctor from opening the scoring in the early stages of the match. However, in the 24th minute, Surrey United finally broke the deadlock when a Tom Lowndes corner-kick was only partially cleared to the top of the penalty area where former Whitecap Steve Kindel fired an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner of the Sapperton net. A few minutes later, the Firemen increased their lead when a Tom Lowndes throw-in was redirected by Andrew Proctor onto the path of Angus Burke who, after slipping by a defender, slotted the ball into the net, past an onrushing Simon Postma. Fifteen minutes into the second half Surrey United added a third goal, this time with Burke becoming the provider and Proctor the finisher. Shortly thereafter, United scored again, this time when Cam Wilson redirected Mason Webb’s low shot into the back of the net. Late in the match, after defender Brad Peetom’s header had bounced off the crossbar, the Firefighters added their 5th goal when Angus Burke linked well with playing-coach Niall Thompson to create a close-range opportunity for Andrew Proctor who proceeded to slot the ball home for his second goal of the match. The entire Surrey United team played very well, while goalkeeper Simon Postma and midfielder Mark McQuade perfomed admirably for the Rovers, albeit in a losing cause. As a result of their 6th consecutive victory, the Firefighters remain in first place, one point ahead of the Metro-Ford Wolves. The Rovers, on the other hand, are still mired in the relegation zone with an unimpressive 4-5-10 record.

CROATIA SC - ICSF INTER 0-0: Also on Sunday, at Andy Livingstone Park, two talented, but rather unsuccessful teams—Croatia SC and ICSF Inter—battled to a scoreless draw after a hard-fought 90 minutes of non-stop action. Both teams tried desperately to gather all 3 points as they took turns attacking and creating excellent goalscoring opportunities. The Croatians—led by Chris Craverio’s outstanding midfield performance—had most of the play in the first half and came close to scoring on several occasions. In particular, at the 30th minute mark, Craveiro’s great pass to Cristian Tropeano forced goalkeeper Dennis Kindel to make a brilliant save on the subsequent close-range shot. Shortly thereafter, Craveiro and Tropeano hooked up again in similar fashion, only this time Tropeano’s shot barely missed the net. Then, just before the halftime whistle, Tropeano became the provider as he set up Paul Bolina who then proceeded to blast the ball straight at Kindel from short range. The Croatians continued to press at the beginning of the second half and once again almost took the lead on a few occasions. Tropeano, Corey Sanford, Kresimir Bebic, and Paul Bolina all came close to giving Croatia SC the lead, but their efforts all went awry. At this point, the ‘Italians’ seemed to wake up and started taking control of the match. Second half substitute Dom Delli Santi had the best chance to give Inter the lead when—at the 80th minute mark—he received a brilliant counter-attack pass from Joseph Marrello but his low shot was brilliantly saved by Didar Sandhu. Shortly thereafter, Delli Santi deflected a shot by Rey Ismail just wide of the net with Sandhu apparently beaten. Then, it was Michael Winter’s turn to miss the target as he rang his wicked shot off the crossbar. Very late in the match, however, it was the Croatians that almost took home all 3 points when former professional Johnny Sulentic fired a wicked one-time, long-range shot just wide of the Inter net after having been set up by Darko Jelic and Cristian Tropeano. As mentioned earlier, Inter’s goalkeeper—Dennis Kindel—played brilliantly throughout the match, while midfielders Michael Winter, Luigi Pantusa, Joseph Marrello, and Dom Delli Santi worked tirelessly for the entire 90 minutes. For the Croatians, young Matteo Agnoloni turned in an excellent performance at his right back position as his spirited effort inspired some of his veteran teammates. The result helps neither team as they both remain near the relegation zone.

AKAL FC - PUNJAB HURRICANES 2-1: The third Sunday game was played in the early evening at Newton Athletic Park and featured two teams trying desperately to avoid relegation: Akal FC and the Punjab Hurricanes. After 90 minutes of non-stop, physical action, the home team walked away with a hard-earned 2-1 victory, a result that keeps Akal FC in the running in its quest to avoid relegation. Bobby Jhutty had a chance to open the scoring for the Hurricanes in the early going, but his header—off a Gary Badesha free kick—grazed the crossbar, with goalkeeper Nuno Jesus well-beaten. Shortly thereafter, it was Akal’s turn to almost take the lead when Peter Chohan raced in all alone, only to have goalkeeper Sheldon Steenhuis pull off a semi-miraculous save. The Hurricanes replied in kind and, at the 25th minute mark, Pami Birring’s shot was cleared off the line by defender Surinder Janda. The Punjab Hurricanes finally took the lead at the 31st minute mark when Cam Hundal fired an unstoppable shot, from well outside the penalty area, into the back of the Akal net. Near the end of the first half, Akal FC knotted the score when an immaculate through ball by Harry Lathan was chipped over the head of the onrushing goalkeeper—Sheldon Steenhuis—by BJ Rockson. Early in the second half, the Hurricanes almost regained the lead but Cam Hundal’s breakaway was thwarted by goalkeeper Nuno Jesus. Then, at the 65th minute mark, Akal FC scored what proved to be the goal in a bizarre fashion as a Desmond Tachie corner kick somehow found its way into the Punjab net on a goalmouth scramble. At this point, the Hurricanes threw caution to the wind in an attempt to even the score but efforts by Joti Thind, Cam Hundal, Bobby Jhutty, and Derrick Bassi were thwarted by some brilliant goalkeeping on the part of Nuno Jesus. Defensively, Surinder Janda, Sarpreet Pahal, and Raju Chohan played very well for the winning team, while Nuno Jesus pulled off some miraculous saves during the entire match. For the Hurricanes, outside midfielders Cam Hundal and Ryan Dhillon were dangerous throughout the entire 90 minutes as they created some quality goalscoring chances. The result narrows the gap between the two struggling teams to one point, with Akal FC still inside the dreaded relegation zone.

COQUITLAM METRO-FORD WOLVES - SERBIAN WHITE EAGLES 3-1: The last game was also played on Sunday evening, this one between the Metro-Ford Wolves and the Serbian White Eagles. The match, played at Burnaby Lake West Complex, ended in a 3-1 victory for the second-place Wolves, thus extending the White Eagles losing streak to 5 games. The heavily-favoured Wolves got off to a fine start and took the lead midway through the first half when former Whitecap Alfredo Valente collected the ball near the touchline and whipped in a wonderful cross for young Carlo Basso, who rose above his defender and guided his header into the bottom corner of the White Eagles’ net. Metro-Ford added to its lead late in the first half with Basso once again the goalscorer. On this occasion, Emilio Bottiglieri and Sang Hwang combined to set up Basso who managed to outwork his defender before slotting the ball into the back of the net. Early in the second half, Metro-Ford’s Brayden Gant was fouled inside the penalty area by Sava Miljanic, resulting in a penalty kick being awarded. Veteran Emilio Bottiglieri hammered home the ensuring spot shot, giving Metro-Ford an insurmountable 3-0 lead. Midway through the second half, Carlo Basso was once again at the centre of attention as he got behind the Serbian backline, only to have Miljanic foul him inside the penalty area. As a result, a penalty kick was awarded and Miljanic was sent off for having denied an obvious goalscoring opportunity. Another young veteran, Russel Huggon, stepped up to the plate to take the penalty kick, only to have Serbian goalkeeper—Richard Goddard—pull off a miraculous save. Despite being a man down, the Serbians fought back tenaciously and narrowed the margin in the late stages of the match when Miso Rakita headed home a wonderful cross by Milan Dragutinovic. The Wolves came close to increasing their lead on a couple of occasions, but Alfredo Valente had his excellent shot saved by Goddard, while Jamie Fletcher watched agonizingly as his blistering drive bounced off the goalpost and out of danger. The White Eagles’ goalkeeper—Richard Goddard—played brilliantly throughout the match, while defender Miso Rakita and midfielder Sasa Vukovic also performed admirably, albeit in a losing cause. For the Wolves, defenders Emilio Bottiglieri and Paul Clerc, midfielders Brayden Gant and Jovan Blagojevic, as well as striker Carlo Basso, played extremely well throughout the match. The Wolves’ victory keeps them one point behind Surrey United at the top of the Premier Division table, while the White Eagles seemed destined for relegation, with a very poor 2-1-15 record.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: RICHMOND FC HIBERNIANS for their excellent performance in defeating the highly-regarded West Van FC by a clear-cut 2-0 margin. Led by the excellent play of forwards Brad Caldwell and Taj Sangara, the Hibernians pretty well dominated every aspect of the match and fully deserved their victory. The well-earned 3 points place Richmond FC near the top of the standings, with a record of 9-5-5.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Akal FC goalkeeper NUNO JESUS for his brilliant performance in his team’s very important 2-1 victory over arch-rivals Punjab Hurricanes. Time after time Jesus came up with miraculous saves, thus keeping his team in the game. For his excellent performance, NUNO JESUS will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2011-02-11.

PREMIER DIVISION – DAY 21

Week 21 of the Premier Division schedule proved to be very interesting and ended with some surprising results. The Coquitlam Metro-Ford Wolves climbed back into first place as a result of a well-earned 3-1 victory over Westside FC, while their arch-rivals—the Surrey United Firefighters—were held to a 1-1 draw by the red-hot Richmond FC Hibernians. Near the bottom of the table, the Sapperton Rovers kept their hopes of avoiding relegation alive by defeating ICST Pegasus, while the ‘Italian’ Derby ended in a lop-sided 4-0 victory for ICSF Inter over Columbus FC. The remaining 5 weeks in the schedule should provide the numerous VMSL fans with a lot of excitement since the battles at both ends of the table are intensifying rapidly.

ICSF INTER - COLUMBUS FC 4-0: On Saturday, at Burnaby Lake West Complex, the highly-anticipated ‘Italian’ Derby took place with the hosting ICSF Inter prevailing over the visiting Columbus FC by an elaborate 4-0 margin. The initial part of the first half was quite evenly played, with both teams attacking and creating some quality goalscoring opportunities. Columbus almost took the lead very early in the match, but veteran Robbie Cairns’ close range shot was brilliantly saved by Inter’s goalkeeper Erman Ozkan. At the other end of the pitch, Luigi Pantusa and Andrew Corazza came close to scoring for Inter, but goalkeeper Giordano DiPalma rose to the occasion and kept the game scoreless until the 26th minute mark. At this juncture, Inter took the lead when midfielder Colin Streckmann unleashed a wicked drive from well outside the penalty area into the top corner of the Columbus net. Shortly thereafter, at about the 30th minute mark, Andrew Corazza emulated Streckmann’s feat by driving yet another blistering shot into the Columbus net, also from long range. It should be mentioned that Corazza had initially been set up by an excellent pass from young midfielder Luigi Pantusa. In the second half, Inter was able to capitalize on some very sloppy Columbus defending and added a couple of more goals in rapid succession. On the first, at the 52nd minute mark, midfielder Michael Winter won the ball in the middle of the park, laid it off to Luigi Pantusa, who promptly crossed it to Colin Streckmann, whose brilliant one-time volley amazingly found the back of the net. The second goal came at the 60th minute mark when Pantusa’s well-taken free kick was mishandled by goalkeeper Giordano DiPalma, resulting in a goal-mouth scramble that ended when an opportunistic Andrew Corazza pounced on the loose ball and hammered it home from close range. Defensively, Robert Hall, Bevan Footman, Jesse Dhami, and Sunny Uppal played very well for Inter, making life relatively easy for goalkeeper Erman Ozkan as he registered his 5th shutout of the season. Needless to say, midfielder Luigi Pantusa and striker Andrew Corazza also played remarkably well in the Inter lineup. The very important victory elevates Inter 6 points out of the dreaded relegation area, while Columbus’ loss—coupled with Richmond FC’s tie with Surrey United—drops them to 5th place in the Premier Division table.

SAPPERTON ROVERS - ICST PEGASUS 3-2: Also on Saturday, at Queen’s Park Stadium in New Westminster, the Sapperton Rovers won their second consecutive match, this one at the expense of ICST Pegasus. The visiting Surrey-based team got off to a great start, scored two goals in the first 25 minutes, and took a 2-0 lead into the dressing room at half time. The first Pegasus goal was scored at the 10th minute mark when Azad Palani converted a well-placed cross from Omari Aldridge. Then, at the 25th minute mark, young Sahil Sandhu got on the end of a loose ball at the far post and managed to tuck it behind the Sapperton goalkeeper Garth Lagasse for Pegasus’ second goal. The visitors kept pressing and came close to adding to their margin on several occasions, but some spectacular goalkeeping on the part of Lagasse kept the scoreline at 2-0 till the halftime whistle. In particular, Lagasse thwarted 4 clear-cut breakaway opportunities, two by Azad Palani, one by Omari Aldridge, and another by Niko Marcina. Early in the second half, the visitors again came close to adding to their lead on a couple of occasions, but efforts by Palani and Sandhu went awry. Obviously, all the missed chances would come back to haunt ICST Pegasus considerably as the Rovers gradually got back into the game and narrowed the margin at the 52nd minute mark when Jay Gangnes received a great pass from Mark McQuade, slipped by 2 Pegasus defenders, and placed the ball behind an onrushing goalkeeper, Amarjit Dhinsa. Unbelievably, the Rovers then scored two late goals to lay claim to all 3 points! The first, at the 82nd minute mark, was scored by Mark McQuade who, after having received a through pass from Omid Ahmadi, slammed the ball into the far corner of the net for the tying goal. Then, just before the final whistle, Kevin Booker fed a brilliant pass to Jay Gangnes who proceeded to beat a Pegasus defender before slotting the ball home for the winning goal. Sapperton’s goalkeeper Garth Lagasse turned in a sensational performance, particularly in the first half as he pulled off innumerable brilliant saves to keep his team in the game. Defensively, Brody Phillips and Colin Phillips also played very well in a winning cause, while Jay Gangnes should be complimented for his outstanding 2-goal performance. Pegasus’ forward Omari Aldridge played remarkably well during the first half but was unable to play in the second half due to an injury. The victory improves Sapperton’s chances of avoiding relegation, while ICST Pegasus remains in the middle of the pack with an even 9-3-9 record.

RICHMOND FC HIBERNIANS - SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS 1-1: The third Saturday game was played at Minoru Oval in Richmond and featured two of the strongest teams in the VMSL’s Premier Division: the hosting Hibernians and the visiting Firefighters. The Hibs continued their impressive undefeated streak by holding the powerful Surrey United Firefighters to a 1-1 draw, thus ending the Firemen’s 6-game win streak and also dropping them back into second place in the Premier Division standings. The visitors almost took the lead in the early going when Vinny Stewart’s goal-bound free kick was brilliantly pushed aside by Richmond’s goalkeeper Luke O’Shea. The match was locked in a midfield battle for most of the first half with both defensive cores keeping goalscoring chances at a premium. The pace of the game remained more or less the same in the second half with Richmond FC showing a bit more determination and perseverance. At the 50th minute mark, Richmond midfielder Masumi Turnbull’s excellent shot was brilliant saved by Surrey goalkeeper Paul Shepherd after Turnbull had been set up by Taj Sangara. Five minutes later, it was Sangara’s turn to come close to breaking the deadlock, but Shepherd pulled off yet another sensational save. At the other end of the pitch, Surrey United also had an excellent goalscoring opportunity at about the 68th minute mark when forward Rizal Ganief lifted a clever chip shot over an advancing Luke O’Shea, only to have the ball agonizingly roll past the upright. With the game seemingly destined to be a goal-less affair, Surrey United finally took the lead at the 84th minute mark when fullback Robbie Wilson raced down the left flank before firing a perfect cross onto the path of an unmarked Andrew Proctor. Proctor’s first shot hit the goalpost, but he had the presence of mind to follow through and hammer the rebound into the net on his second attempt. However, the Hibernians bounced back tenaciously and came close to knotting the score a few minutes later when Taj Sangara’s shot was once again brilliantly saved by Surrey goalkeeper Paul Shepherd. However, just before the final whistle, the Hibs got the well-deserved equalizer when some tremendous work by defender Mike Revell kept the ball in play along the Surrey United goal line and proceeded to set up Taj Sangara who quickly spotted a wide-open Masumi Turnbull who made no mistake as he first-timed the ball into the net from close range. Surrey’s defenders Robbie Wilson, Steve McAuley, Brad Peetom, and Stefan Leslie played extremely well throughout the match, as did goalkeeper Paul Shepherd. For Richmond FC, midfielders Masumi Turnbull and Alex Orasa worked tirelessly during the entire 90 minutes, while defender Mike Revell, forward Brad Caldwell, and goalkeeper Luke O’Shea also performed admirably. As mentioned earlier, the tie drops Surrey United to second place, one point behind the Metro-Ford Wolves, while Richmond FC climbs to 4th place, with a record of 9-6-5.

COQUITLAM METRO-FORD WOLVES - WESTSIDE FC 3-1: Also on Saturday, at Coquitlam Town Centre, the Metro-Ford Wolves climbed back into sole possession of first place by defeating the visiting Westsiders by a 3-1 margin. Even though the Wolves dictated the pace of the game in the early going, it was Westside FC that took the lead at about the 28th minute mark when Bernd Schwericke hit a stunning left-foot volley from well outside the penalty area into the Metro-Ford net, giving goalkeeper Lucas Menz no chance whatsoever. The Westside lead did not last long, however, as the Wolves equalized at the 35th minute mark when Carlo Basso collected a pass from Emilio Bottiglieri and neatly tucked the ball into the net from the top of the penalty area with a curling, right-foot shot. The first part of the second half was dominated by the Wolves and they came close to taking the lead at the 55th minute mark when Russel Huggon was fouled inside the Westside box by veteran defender Andrew Czalij. Obviously haunted by ghosts of his Westside past, veteran Oliver Heald inexplicably missed the net on the ensuing penalty kick, thus leaving the game tied at 1-1. However, at the 60th minute mark, Metro-Ford scored the winning goal, once again from the foot of young Carlo Basso. Basso’s second goal was pretty much a carbon-copy of his first as he eluded a Westside defender before curling the ball around a helpless Westside goalkeeper, Rowan Anders. In the 75th minute, Basso turned provider after he tenaciously chased down a loose ball, shrugged off a Westside defender and set up a wide-open Brayden Gant, who had no difficulty in slotting home the insurance marker. Soon thereafter, Westside FC’s veteran Keith Moore—the oldest player in the VMSL’s Premier Division—set up young Mike Honey whose subsequent goal was called back for a dubious offside infraction. Immediately thereafter, at the other end of the pitch, Coquitlam’s Sang Hwang collected the ball at the halfway line, dribbled through a maze of Westside players, only to have his clever finish barely miss the far post. Defensively, Westside’s Sam Wallace and Taku Bradshaw—as well as midfielder Bernd Schwericke—played extremely well, albeit in a losing cause. For the Wolves, striker Carlo Basso was a going concern throughout the contest, while midfielder Sang Hwang was especially dangerous, particularly in the second half. The defensive quartet of Brook Scott, Matt Besuschko, Emilio Bottiglieri, and Anthony DiNicolo also played extremely well. As mentioned earlier, the victory elevates the Coquitlam team back to first place, while Westside FC remains in the middle of the pack, with an even 6-9-6 record.

PUNJAB HURRICANES - SERBIAN WHITE EAGLES 2-1: The last Saturday game was played in the early evening at Newton Athletic Park between two teams near the bottom of the table: the Punjab Hurricanes and the last place Serbian White Eagles. After a hard-fought 90 minutes of play, the Hurricanes walked away with a narrow 2-1 victory. Early in the match, the Hurricanes almost took the lead but the White Eagles’ goalkeeper—Tomas Kobylka—came up with a splendid save on a close-range shot by Joti Thind. Midway through the first half, Kobylka once again rose to the occasion as he stopped Bobby Jhutty’s long-range shot with yet another excellent save. Then near the end of the first half, Kobylka made another great save—on a Gary Badesha free-kick—only to have Ryan Dhillon pick up the rebound and slot the ball into the empty net for the go-ahead goal. Midway through the second half, the Serbians came close to knotting the score but Mladen Ljumovic’s shot was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Sheldon Steenhuis. Shortly thereafter, however, the White Eagles were rewarded for their perseverance when Milan Dragutinovic scored the tying goal with a long-range shot that gave Steenhuis no chance whatsoever. However, with only a few minutes left in the match, the Hurricanes regained the lead when Ryan Dhillon beat a couple of Serbian defenders down the right flank and sent a perfectly-placed ball onto the path of Bobby Jhutty who proceeded to blast it into the net for the winning goal. Defensively, Gurj Sandhu and Joey Brar played very well for the Punjab Hurricanes, while midfielders Ryan Dhillon and Bobby Jhutty were outstanding throughout the match as they guided their team to a very important victory. Despite the loss, defender Joel Malouf and midfielder Sasha Vukovic played remarkably well for the White Eagles and deserve special mention for their excellent performances. The loss drops the Serbians even deeper in the relegation abyss, while the Hurricanes are now in 10th place in the Premier Division table, only one point ahead of Croatia SC and the Sapperton Rovers. It should be mentioned, however, that Croatia SC and Sapperton have a game in hand over the Punjab Hurricanes.

WEST VAN FC - DELTA UNITED 1-0: The lone Sunday game—played at John Oliver Park in Delta—featured two very skillful teams, the visiting West Van FC and the hosting Delta United. At the end of 90 minutes of non-stop action, the former Trollers walked away with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at the expense of the aspiring home team. Delta United had most of the possession during the entire match, but their numerous goalscoring efforts were stymied by some outstanding goalkeeping on the part of West Van’s Marco Durante. In particular, at the 60th minute mark—with the game still scoreless—Delta’s Garrett Peters raced in on goal on a breakaway, only to have Durante pull off a miraculous save. Similarly, in the 75th minute, John Blair tried to chip the ball over Durante, only to have the West Van goalkeeper come up with yet another outstanding save. As luck would have it, however, it was West Van FC that took the late lead when veteran Mark Gomes fouled West Van’s Alan McIndoe inside the penalty area, resulting in a penalty kick being awarded. Veteran Paul Dailly stepped up to the plate and placed his shot into the corner of the net for the winning goal. It should be mentioned that goalkeeper Steve London came very close to stopping the shot as he got his finger tips on the ball, only to have it bounce off the post and into the net. For Delta United, defenders Woody Bradford, Brian Fowler, and Steve Millar all played remarkably well, while midfielder Jacob Starheim and goalkeeper Steve London also deserve special mention for their excellent performances. As mentioned earlier, West Van’s goalkeeper—Marco Durante—was outstanding, pulling off numerous remarkable saves, particularly in the first half. Forward Ryan Glanville also played very well as his indefatigable work rate caused the Delta defenders problems all game long. The victory improves West Van FC’s record to 9-2-8, while Delta United, despite the loss, remains in third place with 35 points out of 19 games.

NORVAN PACIFIC -- after having spent one year in purgatory -- regained promotion to the Premier Division by clinching first place in Division 1 by virtue of a 1-0 victory over Binger’s Army. Just as the game seemed destined for a tie—a result that would have kept the promotion door open for several teams—Norvan’s Matt Harwell drove the ball home from just inside the penalty area to give his team the well-deserved victory. WELCOME BACK TO THE PREMIER DIVISION, NORVAN PACIFIC!!!!

TEAM OF THE WEEK: SAPPERTON ROVERS for their gutsy performance in defeating the heavily-favoured ICST Pegasus by a narrow, and hard-fought 3-2 margin. Trailing 2-0 at the halftime whistle, the Rovers fought back tenaciously and eventually gathered all 3 points with 2 late goals. Led by the stellar performance of goalkeeper Garth Lagasse—as well as Jay Gangnes’ two brilliant goals—the Rovers still remain in contention to avoid relegation.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: West Van FC’s goalkeeper MARCO DURANTE for his brilliant performance in his team’s 1-0 victory over the high-flying Delta United. Throughout the match, but particularly in the first half, Durante came up with numerous, semi-miraculous saves. For his outstanding performance, MARCO DURANTE will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2011-02-18.

PREMIER DIVISION – DAY 22

The battles at both ends of the Premier Division standings got more intense after the conclusion of Week 22 in the 2010-2011 schedule. At the top of the table, the Surrey United Firefighters regained sole possession of first place as a result of their emphatic—and somewhat surprising—4-0 victory over the unpredictable Delta United, while the Coquitlam Metro-Ford Wolves struggled to earn a single point against West Van FC. Nothing much changed at the bottom of the table as several teams remained in the dreaded relegation-danger zone.

DELTA UNITED - SERBIAN WHITE EAGLES 4-2: On Wednesday evening, at John Oliver Park in Delta, the Serbian White Eagles sank deeper into the relegation abyss by dropping a 4-2 decision at the hands of the hosting Delta United in a Day 19 make-up game. Despite the fact that Delta United controlled most of the match, it was the White Eagles that went to the dressing room with a 2-0 halftime lead. Newly-signed Jonathan Hodgett scored the opener at about the 15th minute mark when he made a great run towards the Delta goal, beat a couple of defenders, and calmly deposited the ball behind goalkeeper Steve London for the go-ahead goal. Shortly thereafter, Delta’s playing-coach—Steve Millar—almost equalized, but his rocket of a shot bounced off the goalpost and out of danger. At about the 30th minute mark, the Serbians doubled their margin when Jonathan Hodgett once again made a brilliant run down the middle of the park, only this time he chose to cut the ball back onto the path of a wide-open Mladen Ljumojevic who made no mistake in scoring from close range. Delta United once again bounced back, but once again failed to score as Mike Gomes’ shot also bounced off the goalpost. However, the home team was finally able to score the very important initial goal early in the second half when Harpreet Khakh beat a couple of Serbian defenders down the left flank and placed a perfect cross into the box, a cross that was subsequently headed home by Mike Gomes. At the 60th minute mark, Delta United knotted the score, once again on a goal by young veteran Mike Gomes. On this occasion, Gomes beat a few White Eagles defenders before drilling the ball into the back of the net. Delta United then proceeded to score the winning goal at the 70th minute mark when Hapreet Khakh become the finisher as he converted a neat pass from Ioannis Tsoulouhas. Very late in the match, Delta added its insurance marker, this time on a wicked, unstoppable drive by Garrett Peters. Delta midfielders Harp Khakh and Mike Gomes turned in inspirational performances, particularly in the second half, as they led their team to victory. Veteran defenders Woody Bradford and Steve Millar also performed admirably in a winning cause, while goalkeeper Steve London had to pull off a few excellent saves, particularly in the first half. For the White Eagles, goalkeeper Tomas Kobylka, defender Sava Miljanic, midfielder Mladen Ljumojevic, and forward Jonathan Hodgett played very well, albeit in a losing cause. The victory solidifies Delta’s hold on third place, while the White Eagles are now in need of a major miracle to avoid relegation.

ICST PEGASUS - RICHMOND FC HIBERNIANS 0-0: On Friday evening, at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey, two very evenly matched teams—ICSF Pegasus and Richmond FC Hibernians—battled to a scoreless draw after an intense 90 minutes of play. The home team controlled most of the play, but the visiting Hibs also had several goalscoring chances during the match. At the 17th minute mark, Richmond midfielder Masumi Turnbull picked up a loose ball inside the Pegasus penalty area but watched agonizingly as goalkeeper Andy Singh pulled off a phenomenal save. Shortly thereafter, at about the 25th minute mark, it was Pegasus’ turn to come close to scoring as Azad Palani’s short-range shot—on a clever cross from Jag Gill—was brilliantly saved by Richmond’s goalkeeper Luke O’Shea. Early in the second half, Pegasus’ young Sahil Sandhu—a former professional with Germany’s FC Energie Cottbus—beat a couple of Richmond defenders, raced in on goal on a breakaway, only to have goalkeeper Luke O’Shea come up with a courageous save. At about the 80th minute mark, Azad Palani once again came close to scoring for Pegasus, but once again Luke O’Shea stood tall and pulled off yet another superlative save. The Hibernians once again replied in kind and came close to taking the lead very late in the match when midfielder Alex Orasa—after having made a mesmerizing run—was fouled just outside the Pegasus 18-yard box. On the ensuing free kick, Erik Olsen’s excellent shot bounced off the crossbar and out of bounds with goalkeeper Andy Singh well-beaten. Just before the final whistle, Pegasus almost took home all 3 points when Diaz Kambere’s long-range shot also bounced off the crossbar. All in all, a very well-played match between two very determined teams! For Pegasus, midfielder Sahil Sandhu turned in yet another brilliant performance using his pace and footwork to full advantage throughout the contest. Forward Jag Gill also played very well, as he showcased his skills and work ethic on numerous occasions. For the Hibernians, defenders Rory Gattens, Geoff Salt, Marcus Brougham, and Tom Brook distinguished themselves as they helped goalkeeper Luke O’Shea register the hard-earned clean sheet. Richmond FC thus remains in 4th place, with an impressive 9-7-5 record, while ICST Pegasus is still in 6th place, with 31 points from 22 games..

WEST VAN FC - COQUITLAM METRO-FORD WOLVES 1-1: Also on Friday evening, at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver, the Metro-Ford Wolves dropped back into second place due to their inability to defeat the hosting former Trollers. As usual, the game was very highly contested and quite evenly played as both teams tried hard to secure all 3 points. Unfortunately, the heavy winds—particularly in the first half—played havoc and prevented both teams from demonstrating their skills. In the first half, the home team came close to scoring on a couple of occasions, but efforts by Alan McIndoe and Marco Mayer went awry. The opening goal of the game came at the 70th minute mark when West Van’s Carl O’Connor capitalized on a bad defensive turnover and proceeded to fire a wicked, long-range drive into the bottom corner of the Metro-Ford net. Ten minutes later, the Wolves tied things up when young Devin Phelan’s fine shot, from the edge of the penalty area, found the back of the net, probably aided and abetted by a Leo Nash deflection. The West Van backline—composed of Drew Gelley, Tim Perry, Max Baessato, and Leo Nash—played extremely well throughout the contest, while front runner Ryan Glanville and midfielder Carl O’Connor also performed admirably. For the Wolves, defenders Matthew Besuschko and Emilio Bottiglieri distinguished themselves in dealing with West Van’s direct approach, while veteran forwards Ian Clarke and Russel Huggon also played very well. The tie drops the Metro-Ford Wolves back to second place, one point behind Surrey United, while West Van FC remains in the middle of the pack, with a 9-3-8 record.

SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS - DELTA UNITED 4-0: On Saturday, at Cloverdale Athletic Park in Surrey, the Surrey United Firefighters bounced back from last week’s disappointing tie against Richmond FC by clobbering the aspiring Delta United by an elaborate 4-0 score and thus regain sole possession of first place. The Firemen started strongly and took the lead in the 5th minute when Mason Webb broke down the left flank, beat a Delta defender, and fired a perfect low cross that Andrew Proctor gathered and converted into what proved to be the winning goal with a low shot into the bottom corner of the net. Former Whitecaps’ captain Jeff Clarke almost added a second goal a few minutes later, but his purposeful flicked header just missed the target. In the 15th minute, Surrey United appeared to score its second goal when Angus Burke tapped home a close-range rebound after a powerful Rizal Ganief shot had struck the upright, but the goal was nullified because of an offside infraction. Delta United bounced back and came close to knotting the score at the 22nd minute mark when Mike Gomes headed the ball onto the path of Shawn Blakeway whose subsequent shot was brilliantly saved by Paul Shepherd. Shortly thereafter, Blakeway had another great opportunity to tie the game, but his shot barely missed the net with Shepherd well-beaten. Late in the first half, however, a shot by Surrey’s Rizal Ganief was inadvertently deflected into the Delta net by Blakeway as he was attempting to clear the ball out of danger. To add insult to Blakeway’s injury, the veteran Delta forward suffered a major concussion shortly thereafter and had to leave the field of play and rushed to the hospital! If Delta United had any ideas of mounting a second half comeback—similar to Wednesday’s against the Serbian White Eagles—they were quickly dispelled 3 minutes into the second half when the Firefighters increased their lead to 3-0. On this occasion, Mason Webb’s cross was cleverly flicked on by Jeff Clarke for Angus Burke to head home his league-leading 16th goal of the season. At the 56th minute mark, Surrey United added its final goal of the contest when Rizal Ganief intercepted the ball just inside the Delta half of the field and quickly sent Jeff Clarke on an overlapping run down the right flank. The veteran then cut inside at the goal line and fired a low cross that Andrew Proctor fired home from close range for his second goal of the match. The entire Surrey United team played extremely well, but special mention should be made of youngsters Jordan Whitehead and Raki Amijee who worked tirelessly in their respective midfield and defence positions. Brad Peetom and Stefan Leslie also played extremely well in their defensive roles, helping Paul Shepherd as he recorded yet another clean sheet. Despite the rather embarrassing loss, Delta’s defenders John Blair and Woody Bradford also played very well throughout the game. The Firefighters’ well-deserved victory elevates them to sole possession of first place, one point ahead of the Metro-Ford Wolves, while Delta United remains in 3rd place with a 12-2-7 record.

PUNJAB HURRICANES - WESTSIDE FC 1-0: Also on Saturday, at Empire Field/Stadium, the Punjab Hurricanes gathered 3 very important points by defeating the struggling Westsiders by a narrow 1-0 margin. The match was very evenly played as both teams seemed rather tentative at the start but opened up as the game progressed. Midway through the first half, the Hurricanes came close to taking the lead but a well-struck long-range shot by Joey Brar bounced off the Westside crossbar and out of danger. Westside replied in kind and also nearly opened the scoring shortly thereafter but a left-footed effort by Brian Reems was easily handled by Punjab’s goalkeeper Sheldon Steenhuis. The second half saw both teams taking more chances and attacking with more determination in search of the winning goal. The Hurricanes once again came close to taking the lead early in the second half but a Bobby Jhutty free kick from the edge of the penalty area bounced off the crossbar. Soon thereafter, Westside’s goalkeeper—Rowan Anders—made an excellent save to deny Joey Brar as his close-range shot seemed destined for the back of the net. At the other end of the pitch, the Westsiders also came close to scoring, but chances by Andre` Herath and Briam Reems went awry as their shots barely missed the net. Very late in the match—at about the 85th minute mark—the Hurricanes finally lay claim to all 3 points when Manvir Brar was fouled inside the Westside penalty area by defender Indy Khabra. On the ensuing penalty kick, Josh Bennett slotted the ball into the back of the net to give his team the victory and the all-important 3 points. For Westside FC, defender Graeme Webber, midfielder Paul Dhaliwal, and forward Jay Kent-Hume played extremely well, albeit in a losing cause. For the Punjab Hurricanes, defenders Sunny Badesha, Pami Birring, and Joey Brar were airtight throughout the match, limiting Westside’s scoring chances to a minimum and making like relatively easy for Sheldon Steenhuis as he recorded his clean sheet. Also, outside midfielders Ryan Dhillon and Josh Bennett were going concerns all game long, while central midfielder Manvir Brar contributed immensely to the victory with his excellent performance. The all-important victory improves the Hurricanes’ chances of avoiding relegation, while Westside FC remains in the middle of the table with a 6-9-7 record.

SERBIAN WHITE EAGLES - CROATIA SC 0-0: On Sunday, at Empire Field/Stadium, the ‘Balkan Derby’ took place in front of a well-behaved but enthusiastic large crowd. Unfortunately, the match ended in a scoreless tie, a result that does neither team any favours. As expected, the Croatians carried most of the play and created numerous goalscoring opportunities. However, some incredible goalkeeping on the part of the White Eagles’ Richard Goddard kept the scoreline at 0-0 till the final whistle. In particular, Goddard made several outstanding saves on shots by Chris Craveiro, Corey Sanford, and Johnny Sulentic. At the other end of the pitch, the White Eagles also came close to scoring on a couple of occasions, but efforts by Jonathan Hodgett and Sasa Vukovic barely missed the net. Defensively, Joel Malouf and Sava Miljanic played extremely well for the struggling Serbians, while young midfielder Mladen Ljumovic was a spark-plug all game long. For the Croatians, former professional Johnny Sulentic was a going concern throughout the contest as he drove the Serbian defenders to distraction with his skill and speed. Also, defender Darko Jelic and goalkeeper Didar Sandhu—another couple of veterans—turned in excellent performances, while midfielder Corey Sanford worked tirelessly in the middle of the pitch. As mentioned earlier, the result helps neither team as the White Eagles remained mired in last place in the standings—with little hope of avoiding relegation—while the Croatians are also in the relegation zone with an unimpressive 5-6-10 record.

COLUMBUS FC - SAPPERTON ROVERS 0-0: Also on Sunday, and also at Empire Stadium/Field, the Sapperton Rovers held the heavily-favoured Columbus FC to a 0-0 draw after a rather lacklustre 90 minutes of play. The match was more or less a midfield battle with both teams succeeding in cancelling each other out and therefore minimizing their goalscoring opportunities. Columbus had a couple of good scoring chances in the first half, but shots by Steve DeBlasio and Leigh Sembaluk barely missed the net. At the other end of the pitch, Sapperton’s Omid Ahmadi made some good penetrating runs but the Columbus defence—led by Nathan Quan—responded very effectively and prevented the Rovers from scoring. Columbus continued to press in the second half and once again came close to scoring as substitute Steve Frazao sailed a couple of shots over the crossbar. However, Stefano Pannu probably had the best Columbus chance to break the deadlock, but his wicked shot bounced off the crossbar and out of harm’s way. It should also be mentioned that Sapperton’s goalkeeper—Garth Lagasse—was solid in goal and fully earned his clean sheet. As a result of the tie, the Rovers are still in the relegation zone, tied with Croatia SC with 21 points. Columbus FC, on the other hand, remains in 5th place with a 10-4-8 record.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS for their impressive 4-0 victory over the highly-ranked and high-flying Delta United. Led by the impressive midfield performance of former Whitecap Jeff Clarke, the Firefighters dominated virtually the entire 90 minutes and fully deserved the victory—a result which puts them back into first place in the Premier Division standings.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Serbian White Eagles’ goalkeeper RICHARD GODDARD for his superlative performance in his team’s 0-0 tie with arch-rivals Croatia SC. Had it not been for Goddard’s amazing goalkeeping, the game could easily have ended in an emphatic victory for the Croatians. For his outstanding performance, RICHARD GODDARD will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2011-02-25.

PREMIER DIVISION – DAY 23

The battles at both ends of the Premier Division table became less intense after Day 23 of the schedule. At the top of the table, the Surrey United Firefighters pretty well lay claim to the league title with a narrow 1-0 victory over second-place Coquitlam Metro-Ford, while the Serbian White Eagles have now officially been relegated to the first Division as a result of their 5-0 loss to West Van FC on Wednesday evening. The Sapperton Rovers and Akal FC were soundly beaten by ICSF Inter and the Serbian White Eagles respectively and thus remain mired in the relegation zone.

ICSF INTER - AKAL FC 3-2: On Wednesday evening, at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey, ICSF Inter scored two late goals to edge the desperate Akal FC by a 3-2 margin in a Day 22 make-up game. The ‘Italians’ took the lead at the 30th minute mark when young Luigi Pantusa—after having made a great run towards goal—was fouled inside the Akal box by defender Peter Chohan. On the ensuing penalty kick, veteran defender Bevan Footman calmly deposited the ball into the Akal net to give his team the lead. Coincidentally, Akal FC tied things up a few minute later, also on a penalty kick. On this occasion, Donald Kambere’s fine cross was handled by Inter’s Rob Hall inside the penalty area. Surinder Janda made no mistake on the spot shot and thus equalized the score at 1-1 after 35 minutes of play. The second half saw Akal FC exert more pressure in search of the all-important second goal, a goal that the home team eventually scored at about the 75th minute mark. After having made a fabulous save a few minutes earlier, Inter’s goalkeeper Dennis Kindel misplayed a back pass and allowed speedy Desmond Tachie to pounce on the ball before slipping it into the back of the net. However, the most exciting part of the match was yet to come as Inter rallied back tenaciously and scored two late goals to secure the victory. In both cases, young Domenic Delli Santi was influential as he scored the first goal—off a rebound on a Sunny Uppal shot—and then set up Sheldin Maistry inside the Akal penalty area for the winning goal. Defensively, veteran Robert Hall and Milos Jeftic played extremely well for the winning team, while midfielders Lui Pantusa, Michael Winter, and Dom Delli Santi also performed admirably throughout the match.

RICHMOND FC HIBERNIANS - DELTA UNITED 4-0: Also on Wednesday evening, at John Oliver Park in Delta, the Hibernians continued their impressive streak by easily defeating Delta United by an elaborate 4-0 margin in a Day 13 make-up game. Delta United had a couple of early chances to open the scoring, but a header by Mike Gomes—on a great cross by Harp Khakh—just missed the net. Soon thereafter, Brett Livingstone’s point-blank shot was brilliantly saved by the Hibs’ goalkeeper, Luke O’Shea. As luck would have it, however, it was Richmond FC that opened the scoring at the 28th minute mark when Chase Wickham set up Alex Orasa, whose shot was fumbled by goalkeeper Steve London before entering the net. Delta United bounced back and, just before the halftime whistle, Mike Gomes once again barely missed the net on a header, this time on a cross from brother Mark Gomes. Early in the second half, the Hibernians almost added to their lead, but a thunderous shot by Masumi Turnbull rattled off the crossbar and out of danger. However, at the 54th minute mark, Richmond FC scored the all-important second goal when Mike Revell rocketed a vicious free-kick from the edge of the penalty area into the Delta net. At the 80th minute mark, the Hibernians added their third goal when midfielder Craig McMillan picked up a loose ball in the middle of the park, dribbled past a few Delta defenders, cut in on goal and slotted the ball into the net. Late in the match, forward Brad Caldwell rounded out Richmond’s scoring as he tapped the ball into the goal after goalkeeper Steve London had fumbled a cross by Geoff Salt. The entire Richmond FC team played remarkably well, but special mention should be made of defenders Mike Revell, Geoff Salt, Marcus Brougham, and Tom Brook for their rock-solid performances. Despite the loss, veteran Delta defenders Woody Bradford and Steve Millar also deserve special mention for their fine performances. Richmond’s victory narrows the margin between the two teams in their battle for third place as Delta United now find themselves only one point ahead of the Hibernians.

WEST VAN FC - SERBIAN WHITE EAGLES 5-0: The third Wednesday evening game was played at Vancouver Technical School and featured the visiting West Van FC and the hosting Serbian White Eagles in a Day 13 make-up game. As expected, the former Trollers dominated proceedings from start to finish and walked away with a comfortable 5-0 victory, a result that puts an end to the Serbian hopes of remaining in the Premier Division. The game was more or less one-way traffic for its entire duration, with West Van dominating proceedings from start to finish. At the 13th minute mark, the visitors took the lead when Alan McIndoe made a brilliant individual run towards the Serbian goal before slotting the ball into the net from close range. Midway through the first half, Ryan Glanville added West Van’s insurance marker when he picked up a rebound and calmly deposited the ball past the White Eagles’ goalkeeper. The visitors continued to press and missed several other goalscoring opportunities during the latter part of the first half with chances by Ryan Glanville, Bruno Tiexiera, and Gary Anderson all going awry. The Serbians also created a couple of chances of their own but Majo Bratic was unable to convert either one of them, thus leaving the scoreline at 2-0 till the halftime whistle. The second half was more or less a repeat of the first, with West Van FC applying most of the pressure and scoring 3 unanswered goals to put the game out of the Serbians’ reach. At the 60th minute mark, young Massimo Pannozzo converted a neat pass from Ryan Glanville for West Van’s third goal. Shortly thereafter, it was Max Baessato’s turn to score as he concluded an amazing run with an unstoppable shot. Near the end of the match, Alan McIndoe duplicated his earlier effort by scoring his second goal as he raced in on goal before belting home the final tally. Despite the loss, Serbia’s defender Stefan Kalaba played extremely well, while midfielder Mladen Ljumovic and forward Jonathan Hodgett worked very hard throughout the 90 minutes of play.

SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS - COQUITLAM METRO-FORD WOLVES 1-0: On Saturday, at Coquitlam Town Centre, in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd, the Firefighters edged the Metro-Ford Wolves by a 1-0 margin, thus extending their lead at the top of the table to a comfortable 4 points. The much anticipated clash between the two top Premier Division teams lived up to its expectations as they produced a thrilling game, full of goal-mouth incidents and excellent soccer. The match was very evenly-played and could easily have ended with a 4-3 score for either team had it not been for some outstanding goalkeeping as well as some last ditch goal-line clearances. The Wolves got off to a bright start with former Whitecap Alfredo Valente tormenting the visitors’ defenders with his incredible skill. United goalkeeper Paul Shepherd made two phenomenal point-blank saves in the first 10 minutes to deny the aforementioned Valente in rapid succession. At the 15th minute mark, it was Lucas Menz’ turn to shine, as the Metro-Ford goalkeeper tipped a full volley from former Whitecaps’ skipper Jeff Clarke over the crossbar. A few minutes later, Valente was at it again as his vicious, swerving, left-foot shot from well outside the penalty area appeared to have Shepherd beaten, but the ball agonizingly swerved wide of the upright. Surrey United responded well and a magnificent cross-field pass from Steve Kindel—yet another former Whitecap—found Jeff Clarke on the right flank. Clarke’s subsequent cross just eluded centre-back Brad Peetom who barely missed the ball with his diving header. The second half proved to be a different affair as it was Surrey United that carried most of the play and created the majority of the goalscoring chances. Rizal Ganief had a great opportunity to open the scoring at the 58th minute mark when he broke clear of the Metro-Ford defence, rounded goalkeeper Lucas Menz and proceeded to fire a curling, left-foot shot towards the empty net only to have the ball barely miss the target. Shortly thereafter, Ganief received a clever pass from Jeff Clarke but once again clipped his shot wide of the net. Finally, at the 74th minute mark, United got the all-important breakthrough when yet another pass from Jeff Clarke sent fullback Mason Webb overlapping down the left flank. Webb’s subsequent left foot cross inexplicably curled into the top far corner of the net for the game’s lone goal. Metro-Ford responded positively and almost tied things up when another former Whitecap—Oliver Heald—just missed the far post with a flashing header. In the 79th minute, the Wolves thought they had levelled the score but were denied by yet another brilliant save by Paul Shepherd on a shot by Russel Huggon. Huggon quickly picked up the rebound and blasted it towards the empty net only to have Steve Kindel miraculously clear the ball out of danger. With Metro-Ford pressing hard for the equalizer, Surrey United almost scored what would have been the insurance marker in the late stages of the match but Lucas Menz made a fabulous goal-line save off a point-blank header by Jeff Clarke. The Firefighters hung on to claim all 3 points and thus increase their lead at the top of the Premier Division standings to a practically insurmountable 4 points over Metro-Ford. It should be mentioned that both teams have just 3 league games remaining.

PUNJAB HURRICANES - WEST VAN FC 3-3: Also on Saturday, at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey, the Hurricanes held the heavily-favoured West Van FC to a 3-3 tie after a hard-fought and exciting 90 minutes of action. The visiting former Trollers got off to a great start and took a 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of play on goals by Carl O’Connor and Marco Mayer. The Hurricanes responded positively to their shaky start and almost narrowed the margin when Gary Badesha hit the crossbar with a long-range free-kick. Then, at the 25th minute mark, West Van’s Carl O’Connor went from hero to goat as he ejected from the game for a violent conduct infraction. The Hurricanes continued to press and were finally rewarded just before the halftime whistle when a Gary Badesha corner kick resulted in a scramble inside the West Van penalty area, a scramble that was eventually finished off by Amar Bains as he succeeded in scoring the Punjabs’ opening goal from close range. However, West Van re-established its 2-goal lead early in the second half when Ryan Glanville scored what most people thought would be the insurance marker. However, very late in the match, the Hurricanes bounced back and scored two wonderful goals to even the score. At the 87th minute mark, Amar Bains scored his second goal of the contest when he headed a Gary Badesha corner kick into the top corner of the West Van net. Then, in injury time, Pami Birring knotted the score as he flicked a Gary Badesha cross past Marco Durante, the West Van goalkeeper. Amar Bains played remarkably well in his centre-back position for the Punjab Hurricanes and he also managed to score 2 goals from set pieces. Midfielders Gary Badesha and Bobby Jhutty—as well as defender Sam Gill—also performed very well as they played a huge part in the Hurricanes’ astonishing comeback. The Punjab Hurricanes now find themselves 5 points clear of the relegation zone, while West Van FC is still in 6th place, with a mediocre 10-4-8 record.

ICSF INTER - SAPPERTON ROVERS 4-0: The third Saturday game was played at Empire Field/Stadium between the hosting ICSF Inter and the visiting Sapperton Rovers. After a one-sided 90 minutes of play, the ‘Italians’ walked away with a rather easy 4-0 victory, a result that sinks the Rovers even deeper in the relegation abyss. Early in the match—at about the 10th minute mark—Inter took the lead when Andrew Corazza controlled a long clearance by defender Sunny Uppal and sent Dom Delli Santi flying down the right flank with a perfectly-executed pass. Delli Santi then proceeded to beat a couple of Sapperton defenders before crossing the ball onto the path of Michael Winter who, without a moment’s hesitation, placed it inside the Rovers’ net for what proved to be the winning goal. A few minutes later, Winter switched roles when he became the provider as he set up Andrew Corazza for Inter’s second goal. On this occasion, Corazza—after controlling Winter’s pass—beat a Sapperton defender before chipping the ball over the head of goalkeeper Garth Lagasse and into the net. Midway through the second half, Sapperton’s chances of mounting a comeback came to an abrupt end when young veteran Jay Gangnes was sent off the field of play for a violent conduct infraction. Despite being reduced to 10 players, the Rovers battled hard for the duration of the match and managed to keep the scoreline at 2-0 till the 75th minute mark. At this point, Inter’s Colin Streckmann won a tackle in the middle of the park, fed a brilliant pass to Dom Delli Santi who, after beating a couple of Sapperton defenders, dribbled the ball around goalkeeper Lagasse before placing it into the net from close range. Inter’s 4th, and final, goal was scored at the 85th minute mark with Colin Streckmann once again the main contributor as he stripped the ball from an opponent and sent Joey Audia flying towards goal with an impeccable pass. The young Audia then finished off the play by scoring his first VMSL Premier Division goal with an unstoppable low shot. Inter’s goalkeepers Erman Ozkan and Dennis Kindel shared the rather easy shutout, aided and abetted by some excellent defending on the part of Robert Hall, Milos Jeftic, Bevan Footman, Sunny Uppal, and Ryan Zaharija. Despite the loss, Sapperton’s goalkeeper Garth Lagasse should be mentioned for his stellar performance. Inter’s impressive victory solidifies its hold on 8th place in the Premier Division standings, while the Rovers remain in the relegation zone, with a 5-6-11 record.

COLUMBUS FC - RICHMOND FC HIBERNIANS 3-0: The fourth, and last, Saturday game was played at Minoru Park in Richmond between the streaking Richmond FC Hibernians and the hot-and-cold Columbus FC in what might be considered a battle for third place. Surprisingly, the Hibs’ 12-game unbeaten streak came to an abrupt end as the ‘Italians’ came out of their slumber and registered an impressive 3-0 victory. Columbus FC controlled the run of play for most of the game and fully deserved the impressive margin of victory. Steve DeBlasio opened the scoring midway through the first half on a well-placed penalty kick after midfielder Blair Robertson was fouled inside the Richmond FC penalty area by defender Geoff Salt. Shortly thereafter, the ‘Italians’ doubled their lead when Leigh Sembaluk headed home a wonderful cross by Steve DeBlasio. Columbus continued pressing and came close to increasing the margin on a couple of occasions, but some excellent goalkeeping on the part of Richmond’s Luke O’Shea kept the scoreline at 2-0 till the halftime whistle. The second half was more or less a repeat of the first as the Hibernians tried hard to narrow the margin. At about the 77th minute mark, Richmond FC was awarded a penalty kick when Brad Caldwell was fouled inside the Columbus penalty area by Devon Greenside. Unfortunately for the home team, Erik Olsen missed the target on the ensuing penalty kick, thus leaving the score at 2-0. Very late in the match, Columbus added its third goal with Steve DeBlasio once again involved in the play. On this occasion, DeBlasio blasted a wicked drive from well outside the penalty area into the top right-hand corner of the net, a shot that gave Luke O’Shea no chance whatsoever. Needless to say, DeBlasio played extremely well throughout the match, while midfielders Leigh Sembaluk and Jonathan Poli—as well as defender Devon Greenside—also turned in excellent performances. Despite the loss, goalkeeper Luke O’Shea performed admirably in the Richmond FC goal. As a result of the victory, Columbus FC climbs into a 4th place tie with the Hibernians, only one point behind Delta United.

ICST PEGASUS - DELTA UNITED 3-0: On Sunday, at John Oliver Park in Delta, ICST Pegasus defeated the slumping Delta United by a 3-0 margin. The visiting Pegasus lads took the lead at the 10th minute mark when Ryan Powell tapped in a brilliantly-placed cross by Niko Marcina, who had previously beaten a few Delta defenders on his way to the goal. Shortly thereafter, Delta United came close to knotting the score, but Pegasus’ goalkeeper—Andy Singh—came up with an amazing save on a shot by Garrett Peters. At the 19th minute mark, Delta United was awarded a penalty kick when Pegasus’ defender Deep Toor fouled Brett Livingstone inside the penalty area. Veteran Mike Gomes stepped up to the plate to take the ensuing penalty kick, but his shot was brilliantly saved by Andy Singh. To add insult to injury, Singh also managed to save Gomes’ subsequent shot as he picked up his own rebound and fired the ball towards the Pegasus goal, only to have Singh pull off yet another semi-miracle. Moments later, Pegasus added its second goal when Azad Palani headed home a fine cross from Ryan Powell. Just before the halftime whistle, Pegasus’ Meysam Soltani put the game out of Delta’s reach when he whipped a very dangerous ball into the penalty area. Soltani’s cross/shot eluded everyone, including goalkeeper Steve London, and went directly into the back of the net. During the entire second half, Pegasus seemed to focus on keeping a clean sheet instead of adding more goals to the scoreline. The visitors were able to accomplish their goal, mostly due to some more excellent goalkeeping on the part of Any Singh. In particular, efforts by Garrett Peters, Danfi Parker, and Steve Millar were all brilliantly saved by Singh. The hard-earned victory elevates ICST Pegasus to a 6th place tie with West Van FC in the Premier Division standings, while Delta United remains in 3rd place, with a 12-2-9 record.

CROATIA SC - WESTSIDE FC 1-0: Also on Sunday, at Empire Stadium, the Croatians breathed a sigh of relief after edging the visiting Westside FC by a 1-0 margin, a result which elevates them out of the relegation zone, albeit by a mere 3 points. Near the end of an evenly-played—and somewhat uneventful—first half, the Croatians took the lead when veteran defender Darko Jelic finished off an excellent 3-way passing play—also involving Chris Craverio and Phil Kotter—with a lethal far-post shot that found the back of the Westside net. The second half was a scrappy affair with neither team able to generate any sustained spells of quality possession. Westside came close to equalizing on a couple of occasions, but failed to do so as Bernd Schwericke and Brian Reems both missed golden opportunities. At the other end of the pitch, Chris Craveiro, Phill Kotter, Cristian Tropeano, and Corey Sanford also came close to scoring but their chances also went awry. Near the end of the match, Croatia SC almost doubled its lead but Westside’s goalkeeper—Rowan Anders—pulled off a miraculous save on a long-range shot by Matteo Agnoloni. Croatia’s Darko Jelic and Corey Sanford dominated the left side of the pitch, while Matteo Agnoloni, Maarten Koorn, and Jure Krpan turned in excellent defensive performances, making life relatively easy for Didar Sandhu as he earned yet another shutout—his 9th of the season. For Westside, Graeme Webber and Sam Wallace were rock-solid in their defensive roles, while Wyatt Seddon-Johnstone was his usual workhorse self in the middle of the park. As mentioned earlier, the all-important victory places Croatia SC 3 points ahead of the Sapperton Rovers in the relegation-avoidance race, while Westside FC remains in the lower-middle of the pack, with a 6-9-8 record.

SERBIAN WHITE EAGLES - AKAL FC 4-0: The last Sunday game was played at Newton Athletic Park between two teams near the bottom of the table: the hosting Akal FC and the visiting Serbian White Eagles. Despite the fact that the White Eagles had already been relegated to the first Division, they demonstrated a great deal of grit and determination in defeating their desperate opponents by a 4-0 margin. After an evenly-played—and scoreless—first half, the Serbians managed to score an unprecedented 4 goals in the second half to win the game by a comfortable margin. At the 55th minute mark, young Majo Bratic raced towards the Akal goal on a lethal counter-attack and was able to brilliantly finish off the play by chipping the ball over the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Nuno Jesus. Five minutes later, Jonathan Hodgett increased the White Eagles’ lead when he dribbled by a couple of Akal defenders before placing the ball into the back of the net. At the 70th minute mark, Hodgett unleashed a great, long-range shot, a shot that gave Jesus no chance whatsoever. Just before the final whistle, Hodgett rounded out his hat-trick as he found himself wide open in front of the Akal goal and had no difficulty in placing the ball into the net. Defensively, Kyle Knees played very well for the White Eagles, while Juan Sanchez and Mladen Ljumovic worked very hard in the midfield throughout the contest. Needless to say, Jonathan Hodgett turned in a superlative performance, scoring 3 excellent goals and driving the Akal defenders to distraction with his pace and skill. Akal FC now find themselves in a very precarious position—6 points out of the safety zone, with only 4 games remaining.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS for their hard-fought 1-0 victory over the second place Metro-Ford Wolves. Led by Jeff Clarke’s brilliant midfield performance, as well as some unbelievable goalkeeping on the part of Paul Shepherd, the Firefighters increased their lead at the top of the Premier Division standings to 4 points, almost guaranteeing them the coveted title!

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: Surrey United’s midfielder JEFF CLARK and goalkeeper PAUL SHEPHERD for their amazing performances in their team’s 1-0 victory over the Metro-Ford Wolves, as well as ICST Pegasus’ goalkeeper ANDY SINGH for his semi-miraculous efforts in his team’s 3-0 victory over Delta United. For their outstanding performances, JEFF CLARK, PAUL SHEPHERD, and ANDY SINGH will each receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2011-03-04.

Pizza Threesome!

Yes LOL! As the saying goes bad things happen in threes. Last year the same thing happened after the Christmas break. Hopefully we get out of the slump in time for cup as placement in the league does not matter outside of top 8 (provincial cup), unless you are in relagation zone or finish first, no?

IMPERIAL CUP – PRELIMINARY ROUND

The Imperial Cup playdowns started this past weekend with one major upset taking place as the struggling Akal FC edged the heavily-favoured Columbus FC by a 1-0 margin. The other results were more or less predictable as four Division 1 teams were eliminated from the competition. The next round should be more interesting as a few Premier Division teams will be facing each other.

WEST VAN FC - ICSF INTER 3-2 (OT): On Friday evening, at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver, West Van FC edged the visiting ICSF Inter by a 3-2 overtime margin after a heavily-contested and highly-competitive 120 minutes of exciting and entertaining action. Inter took the lead at the 10th minute mark when Michael Winter took advantage of a West Van defensive blunder and calmly placed the ball behind newly-signed goalkeeper Nick Boyd from close range. Inter kept pressing and came close to adding a second goal but Andrew Corazza and Sheldon Maistry both missed glorious opportunities as their shots went wide of the net. The home team gradually got back into the game and started taking over the reins of the match and came close to knotting the score on a couple of occasions late in the first half. However, a brilliant save by Inter’s goalkeeper Erman Ozkan—on a great shot by former Inter striker Kevin Crouch—and the woodwork—on Paul Dailly’s amazing long-range blast—kept the scoreline at 1-0 till the halftime whistle. The former Trollers continued to press at the start of the second half and once again came close to tying things up when Kevin Crouch’s header barely missed the target. Finally, at the 15th mark, West Van FC was able to equalize when Drew Gelley headed home a fantastic cross from Tim Perry, after the central defender had made a nifty run down the right flank. Ten minutes later, substitute Marco Mayer emulated Gelley as he also headed home what proved to be the go-ahead goal on a patented Paul Dailly corner kick. To their credit, the ‘Italians’ never gave up and came close to scoring on a couple of occasions, but 2 efforts by Andrew Corazza went awry. Corazza was finally rewarded very late in the game when he curled a long-range shot into the top corner of the net past West Van’s goalkeeper, Nick Boyd. During the first overtime period, Corazza went from hero to goat as he received his second caution of the match and was therefore sent off, leaving his team with only 10 players for the rest of the match. Very early in the second overtime period, West Van FC scored what proved to be the winning goal when Kyle McDiarmid knocked the ball home from the edge of the penalty area as he one-timed a fine cross from Marco Mayer, who had previously beaten a couple of Inter defenders down the right flank. Once again, however, Inter didn’t give up and came extremely close to equalizing just before the final whistle, but a well-executed shot by Rey Ismail hit the crossbar and bounced out of danger. Despite the heart-breaking loss, defender Milos Jeftic and midfielder Michael Winter turned in superlative performances for Inter. For West Van, central defender Leo Nash was absolutely outstanding throughout the contest, while forward Ryan Glanville worked tirelessly all game long. West Van FC will now take on Estrella de Chile—a first division team—in the round of 16 of the Imperial Cup.

ICST PEGASUS - BINGER’S ARMY 5-0: On Saturday early afternoon, at Empire Stadium in Vancouver, the Premier Division ICST Pegasus destroyed the Division 1 Binger’s Army by an elaborate 5-0 score. Needless to say, the visitors dominated every aspect of the match and fully deserved their emphatic margin of victory. In fact, had it not been for the outstanding performance of Binger’s goalkeeper Chris O’Connor, the scoreline would have been even more one-sided as he came up with several brilliant saves. In particular, Azad Palani was denied by O’Connor on no fewer than 5 clear-cup scoring chances, while Diaz Kambere, Meysam Soltani, and Niko Marcina were also thwarted in acrobatic fashion. Pegasus opened the scoring at the 10th minute mark as Azad Palani raced in on goal on a breakaway, after having been set up by an immaculate pass from Diaz Kambere. Near the end of the first half, Palani added his second goal of the match as he volleyed home a loose ball from inside the Binger’s penalty area. Midway through the second half, Pegasus’ young attacking midfielder—Sahil Sandhu—beat couple of defenders on the right flank, cut inside and calmly slotted the ball home with a left foot shot from the edge of the 18-yard box. At the 75th minute mark, Niko Marcina made a beautiful run from his central midfield position and finished off his breakaway by firmly striking the ball into the corner of the net, giving Chris O’Connor no chance whatsoever. Late in the match, substitute Barinder Johal added Pegasus’ 5th goal as he deftly chipped the ball over O’Connor’s outstretched hands with a half-volley. The entire Pegasus team played extremely well, but special mention should be made of defenders Andrew Reed, Diaz Kambere, and Paul Bahia as they made life very easy for goalkeeper Fyi-Amar Dhinsa as he recorded his clean-sheet. Midfielders Niko Marcina and Sahil Sandhu also played extremely well in a winning cause. ICST Pegasus next opponent will be Delta United, in the Imperial Cup round of 16.

WESTSIDE FC - VANCOUVER OLYMPICS 2-0: On Saturday late afternoon, also at Empire Stadium, Westside FC struggled somewhat but eventually defeated the Vancouver Olympics by a 2-0 scoreline. The Westsiders got off to a bright start and controlled most of the action during the initial part of the match. They were rewarded at around the 20th minute mark when Wyatt Seddon-Johnstone hit a first-time shot from just outside the penalty area, a shot that found the top corner of the Olympics’ net. The home team fought back tenaciously and forced Westside FC to defend for most of the remainder of the first half. In fact, the Olympics came close to knotting the score on a couple of occasions but efforts by Sasa Plavsic and Carmine Pannozzo went awry. The second half was a pretty sloppy affair with Westside failing to find any sustained rhythm or pressure, while the Olympics were limited to long-range efforts that were easily stymied by the always reliable Westside goalkeeper, Rowan Anders. The Olympics did have an excellent opportunity to tie things up at the 65th minute mark, but Muhammed Aburub’s point-blank shot was brilliantly saved by Anders. Then, very late in the contest, Westside put the Olympics out of their misery by scoring the insurance marker when captain Brian Reems gathered the ball inside the 18-yard line and tucked it inside the net past a bewildered goalkeeper, Marco D’Andrea. Veteran Westside defenders James Possee and Chris Mehuys were towers of strength during the entire match, while Taku Bradshaw was dangerous on the left flank as he drove the Olympics’ defenders to distraction with his speed and skill. As a result of the victory, Westside FC will now face another first division team—the newly-promoted Norvan Pacific—in the next round of the Imperial Cup.

CROATIA SC - RINO’S VANCOUVER SC 2-0: On Sunday early afternoon, at Empire Stadium, yet another Premier Division vs Division 1 match took place. Once again, the Premier Division team—Croatia SC—prevailed by eliminating Rino’s Vancouver SC from the Imperial Cup competition. The Croatians got off to a good start and nearly took the lead at the 15th minute mark when Marteen Koorn sent a long diagonal ball onto the path of a streaking Darko Jelic, whose subsequent full-volley was brilliantly saved by Rino’s goalkeeper, Jeff Thom. However, at the 35th minute mark, Croatia SC managed to take the lead on a well-executed 4-way passing play. Veteran Chris Craveiro got things started as he dribbled up the middle of the field before passing the ball to Corey Sanford, whose subsequent pass found Darko Jelic at the top of the penalty area. Jelic then quickly distributed the ball to a streaking Matteo Agnoloni who proceeded to slot the ball home from close range for what proved to be Croatia’s winning goal. In the second half, Croatia SC almost doubled its lead at the 65th minute mark, but Darko Jelic—on a great cross from Kresimir Bebic—sent his header just wide of the target. Soon thereafter, however, the Croatians doubled their lead when Corey Sanford converted an excellent pass from Chris Craveiro into the insurance marker. The entire Croatian team played extremely well but special mention should be made of midfielders Phil Kotter and Matteo Agnoloni as they worked relentlessly throughout the match. Also, defenders Maarten Koorn and Shawan Parkes made life relatively easy for goalkeeper Didar Sandhu as he recorded yet another clean-sheet—his fourth in a row! As mentioned earlier, Rino’s goalkeeper—Jeff Thom—pulled off several exceptional saves as he kept the scoreline respectable, while midfielder Charlie Carrick worked tirelessly throughout the entire match. The Croatians will now take on the number 1 seeded team—Surrey United—in the round of 16 of the Imperial Cup.

NK HRVAT - RICHMOND FC OLYMPICS 2-1: Also on Sunday, at Empire Stadium, two Division 1 teams clashed in the first round of the Imperial Cup playdowns. At the end of a hard-fought 90 minutes of action, NK Hrvat defeated the visiting Richmond Olympics by a narrow 2-1 margin. The home team controlled most of the play throughout the contest and, had it not been for some outstanding goalkeeping on the part of youth call-up Ante Boskovic, the scoreline would have been more emphatic. Very early in the match, NK Hrvat opened the scoring when Mark DeLuca took advantage of a great cross by Kreso Ukalovic and blasted the ball into the Richmond net from close range. The Olympics tied things up 10 minutes later when Steve Chivers skillfully controlled a long-range free kick by Mike Paynter, beat a Hrvat defender and calmly finished off the play by slotting the ball home from close range. Then, at the 30th minute mark, NK Hrvat scored the winning goal when young Jevin Hillis blasted an unstoppable free kick from well outside the penalty area into the top corner of the Richmond net. The Olympics fought back hard, especially late in the second half, in search of the equalizer but were unable to penetrate the rock-solid Hrvat defense. As mentioned earlier, Richmond goalkeeper Ante Boskovic turned in a superlative performance, while midfielder Steve Chivers was a going concern all game long as he distributed the ball quickly and accurately. For NK Hrvat, striker Jevin Hillis drove the Olympics’ defenders to distraction with his pace and skill, while midfielder Ivan Prpic also played remarkably well in a winning cause. NK Hrvat will now face another Richmond team—the Premier Division Hibernians—in the next round of the Imperial Cup playdowns.

AKAL FC - COLUMBUS FC 1-0: In what could easily be defined as the upset of the season, the struggling Akal FC eliminated the heavily-favoured Columbus FC from further Imperial Cup play by edging the ‘Italians’ by a 1-0 margin in a game played on Sunday evening at Newton Athletic Park. As expected, Columbus FC controlled the tempo of the match, particularly in the first half. Akal goalkeeper—Nuno Jesus—lived up to his name by making a miraculous save early in the game on a great shot by Steve DeBlasio. As well, chances by Steve Frazao, Blair Robertson, and Stefano Pannu went awry, keeping the match scoreless till the halftime whistle. Late in the first half, Pannu received his second caution of the match and was thus sent off, leaving his team with only 10 men for the remainder of the contest. Despite being a man down, Columbus still kept pressing during the second half, but Akal FC played a very smart, defensive game and relied only on counter-attacks to try and gather the all-important first goal. The visitors’ tactics paid enormous dividends when, at the 60th minute mark, Donald Kambere completed a lethal counter-attack to score the game’s lone goal with a hard, low shot from the edge of the penalty area. At this point, Columbus threw caution to the wind and pressed even harder for the equalizer, but some excellent defending on the part of Surinder Janda, Raja Chohan, Harbinder Chohan, and Jassi Randhawa kept the vaunted Columbus attackers at bay. In fact, the was Akal FC that came close to doubling the score at about the 75th minute mark when Desmond Tachie—on yet another counter-attack—was stymied by Columbus’ goalkeeper Giordano DiPalma as he raced in all alone on a breakaway. Forward Donald Kambere and goalkeeper Nuno Jesus turned in superlative performances for Akal FC, while Columbus’ defender Nathan Quan and forward Steve DeBlasio worked tirelessly throughout the match, albeit in a losing cause. As a result of the upset victory, Akal FC will now play the Metro-Ford Wolves in the Round of 16 of the Imperial Cup.

PREMIER DIVISION

DAY 24

RICHMOND FC HIBERNIANS - SAPPERTON ROVERS 1-0: On Saturday, at Queen’s Park Stadium in New Westminster, the visiting Hibernians edged the desperate Sapperton Rovers by a 1-0 margin in a Day 24 league game. The match was a very physical, and somewhat nasty, affair with both teams trying desperately to gain all 3 points. Very early in the match, the visiting Hibs almost took the lead when a long throw-in by defender Geoff Salt was flicked on by midfielder Tom Brook onto the path of Craig McMillan, whose subsequent shot skimmed the outside of the post. Shortly thereafter, it was Sapperton’s turn to come close to scoring as a long-range shot by Trevor Todd was well saved by Richmond’s goalkeeper, Luke O’Shea. Shortly thereafter, another long Sapperton shot—this one by Mark McQuade—was once again saved brilliantly by O’Shea. In so doing, however, O’Shea dislocated 2 fingers and had to be replaced by Matt Clayton. At the 20th minute mark, a dangerous cross by Sapperton’s McQuade was bravely intercepted by Clayton, preventing Omid Ahmadi from heading the ball into the empty net. The Hibernians replied in kind and almost took the lead at the 25th minute mark when a brilliant cross by Geoff Salt was headed just wide of the Sapperton goal by Alex Orasa. A couple of minutes later, Richmond striker Erik Olsen beat two Sapperton defenders down the right flank before sending a perfect cross to Craig McMillan, whose shot once again barely missed the target. At the 30th minute mark, McMillan was once again the danger-man as he watched agonizingly as Sapperton’s goalkeeper—Garth Lagasse—came up with a brilliant save to keep the game scoreless till the halftime whistle. The second half was more or less a repeat of the first as both teams took turns attacking and defending. Things seem to change somewhat at the 60th minute mark when Richmond’s Erik Olsen was sent off the field of play for a serious foul play infraction. However, it was Richmond FC that took the lead at the 75th minute, despite playing with only 10 men. On this occasion, another long throw-in by Geoff Salt sailed into the Sapperton penalty area where midfielder Alex Orasa was able to volley the ball into the bottom corner of the net. The Rovers’ chances of knotting the score diminished a few minutes later when Rhys Volkenant received his second caution and was therefore expelled from the match. However, Sapperton didn’t give up and came very close to tying things up in the late stages of the match when Mark McQuade once again forced Matt Clayton to make a very good save to preserve the shut-out and the all-important victory. Despite the heart-breaking loss, Sapperton’s midfielders Mark McQuade and Colin Phillips played extremely well, as did goalkeeper Garth Lagasse. For the winning Richmond team, goalkeepers Luke O’Shea and Matt Clayton fully earned their clean-sheet, aided and abetted by defenders Tim Sowerby, Geoff Salt, Stu Walters, and Mike Revell. Midfielders Alex Orasa and Craig McMillan also deserve special mention as they worked tirelessly throughout the hard-fought 90 minutes of non-stop action. As a result of the victory, the Hibernians now find themselves all alone in third place, with a 11-7-6 record, while the Rovers remain mired in the dreaded relegation zone, with only 21 points from 23 games.

SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS - PUNJAB HURRICANES 2-0: Also on Saturday, at Cloverdale Athletic Park in Surrey, the Surrey United Firefighters maintained their strong hold on first place by defeating the visiting Hurricanes by a 2-0 margin in a Day 24 league game. Both teams desperately needed all 3 points, but for totally different reasons: the Firefighters to maintain possession of first place and the Hurricanes to remain out of the dreaded relegation zone. The underdog Hurricanes took the game to the defending champions right from the opening kick-off but, as luck would have it, it was Surrey United that opened the scoring at the 10th minute mark when Robbie Wilson sent Angus Burke flying towards the Hurricanes’ goal on a lethal counter-attack. Burke proceeded to outpace a couple of Punjab defenders before chipping the ball over the advancing goalkeeper for what proved to be the winning goal. The goal did not deter the Hurricanes as they continued to press in an effort to knot the score. Bobby Jhutty came very close to tying the game on two separate occasions, but his well-struck free-kicks were brilliantly saved by Surrey’s goalkeeper, Paul Shepherd. Late in the first half, Shepherd once again rose to the occasion, as he brilliantly saved Ryan Dhillon’s close-range shot. Early in the second half, Dhillon was once again stymied by Shepherd, this time on a long-range, curling shot. Surrey United also had a couple of glorious goalscoring chances, but efforts by Mason Webb and Joseph Martin failed to find the back of the net. At the other end of the pitch, the Hurricanes were finally able to beat Shepherd but Robbie Wilson came to the rescue and headed the ball off the goal line. At this point, Surrey United made a couple of key substitutions as former Whitecap Geordie Lyall and playing-coach Niall Thompson entered the field. The strategy immediately paid enormous dividends when Lyall—on a well-timed pass—sent another United substitute—16-year old Sean Einnarrson—racing behind the Punjab defence. The youngster might have had a crack at goal himself, but unselfishly squared the ball to Niall Thompson who had no difficulty whatsoever in slotting it into the open net for the insurance marker. Surrey’s second goal appeared to take the wind out the Hurricanes’ sails and the Firefighters could have added a couple of more goals in the late going but veterans Niall Thompson and Jeff Clarke failed to convert excellent chances. Throughout the match, the Punjab Hurricanes did not appear to be a team struggling in the relegation battle and played some enterprising soccer, with Bobby Jhutty, Rupi Birring, Gary Badesha, and Ryan Dhillon particularly impressing. For Surrey United, Vince Stewart—in an emergency centre-back role—had a strong game while goalkeeper Paul Shepherd was once again the stand-out as he recorded his 6th shutout in the last 7 games. The Firefighters have now pretty well clinched first place in the Premier Division, while the Hurricanes remain in the relegation danger zone.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: AKAL FC for its unbelievable 1-0 victory over the heavily-favoured Columbus FC in the first round of the Imperial Cup playdowns. The underdogs defended remarkably well throughout the contest and eventually scored the winning goal when Donald Kambere capitalized on one of their frequent counter-attacks.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: Surrey United’s goalkeeper PAUL SHEPHERD and Akal FC’s goalkeeper Nuno Jesus for their extraordinary performances in their teams’ respective victories over the Punjab Hurricanes and Columbus FC. Time after time, Shepherd and Jesus came up with semi-miraculous saves to keep their teams in the running. For their outstanding performances, PAUL SHEPHERD and NUNO JESUS will each receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2011-03-11.

Change his name to Jesus because as you see "Akal goalkeeper—Nuno Jesus—lived up to his name by making a miraculous save early in the game". No Jesus = no miracles I guess. I thought it's pretty obvious JBN!

IMPERIAL CUP – ROUND OF 16

Only 3 Imperial Cup games were played this past weekend, due to the intolerable weather conditions. No big surprises took place as the 3 heavily-favoured Premier Division teams—Richmond FC, West Van FC, and Westside FC—disposed of their Division 1 rivals—NK Hrvat, Estrella de Chile, and Norvan Pacific. As well, 2 make-up games were played on Wednesday evening with Croatia SC defeating Akal FC by a 2-0 score, and the Sapperton Rovers edging West Van FC 2-1.

RICHMOND FC HIBERNIANS - NK HRVAT 1-0: On Saturday, at Minoru Park in Richmond, the Hibernians had their hands full against the visiting NK Hrvat, but eventually managed to defeat the Divison 1 team by a 1-0 margin. Very early in the contest—at about the 10th minute mark--the underdog NK Hrvat were reduced to 10 men due to the expulsion of John Botica as he received a red card for a serious foul play infraction. At this juncture, the home team started taking control of the action and exerted constant pressure on the Hrvat defensive unit. At the 25th minute mark, Richmond FC almost took the lead when midfielder Peter Chivers unleashed a long-range cannon of a shot that, unfortunately for the Hibs, bounced off the crossbar and out of danger. Then, at the 40th minute mark, a fantastic run by centre-back Mike Revell resulted in Revell cracking a great shot that was saved by Hrvat’s goalkeeper Marko Bajic. Just before the halftime whistle, Richmond’s Chase Wickham’s cross was headed towards the Hrvat goal by Masumi Turnbull. Once again, however, goalkeeper Marko Bajic made a phenomenal save to keep the match scoreless after 45 minutes of play. The second half was more or less a repeat of the first, as the Hibernians pressed hard to notch the opening goal. A header by Peter Chivers—from a Marcus Brougham cross—narrowly missed the far post at the 55th minute mark. Then, a few minutes later, another excellent cross by Brougham was headed back by Chase Wickham to an unmarked Masumi Turnbull who missed a golden opportunity to give his team the lead when he misplayed the ball—mostly due to the snowy field! Chivers and Turnbull then proceeded to barely miss another couple of excellent chances and the match seemed destined for overtime. However, at the 85th minute mark, substitute striker Luke O’Shea took matters into his own hands as he converted a fine cross by Marcus Brougham into the lone—and winning—goal. It should be mentioned that O’Shea is normally Richmond FC’s goalkeeper but, as a result of a hand injury suffered last week was unable to start in goal. Defensively, Marcus Brougham and Mike Revell played extremely well for the Hibs, while forwards Tim Sowerby and Luke O’Shea also turned in excellent performances. The victory advances Richmond FC to the quarter-finals of the Imperial Cup where they will meet the winner of the Serbian White Eagles – Punjab Hurricanes match.

WEST VAN FC - ESTRELLA de CHILE 4-0: Also on Saturday, at Empire Stadium in Vancouver, the Premier Division WEST VAN FC destroyed the Division 1 Estrella de Chile by an elaborate 4-0 score. Very early in the match, Estrella de Chile’s Murtada Almatrood almost opened the scoring after he had received a great pass from Ducivan DeSouza. However, West Van’s goalkeeper—Marco Durante—came up with a phenomenal save to keep the score level till the 15th minute mark. At his point, the former Trollers took the lead when—on a Tim Perry cross—Kevin Crouch out-jumped the Chilean goalkeeper—Mike Newton—and knocked the ball to Ryan Glanville who, without a moment’s hesitation, slotted it home for what proved to be the winning goal. Ten minutes later, young Bruno Teixeira set up Kevin Crouch for West Van’s second goal. Teixeira beat a couple of Chilean defenders before laying the ball onto the path of Crouch who belted it home for the insurance marker. In the second half, West Van FC continued to press and added a third goal at about the 60th minute mark as Alan McIndoe picked up a loose ball in the middle of the park, beat a couple of defenders and raced in on goal before depositing the ball past a helpless Mike Newton. At this point, the Chileans seemed to wake up and started to take the game to the visitors, albeit without any success. Efforts by Murtada Almatrood and Habil Otieno were thwarted by some excellent goalkeeping on the part of Marco Durante, keeping the scoreline at 3-0 till the late stages of the match. The last goal came just before the final whistle when a perfectly-placed Paul Dailly corner kick was brilliantly headed home by Ryan Glanville, for his second goal of the match. Defensively, Leo Nash, Trevor Short, and Drew Gelley were rock-solid for West Van FC, making life relatively easy for goalkeeper Marco Durante as he earned yet another clean sheet. For the losing team, defender Tarek Yassin, midfielder Ducivan DeSouza, and forwards Murtada Almatrood and Habil Otieno worked very hard throughout the match, albeit in a losing cause. The rather easy victory advances West Van FC to the quarter-finals of the Imperial Cup where they will face the winner of this week-end’s Metro-Ford Wolves – Akal FC contest.

WESTSIDE FC - NORVAN PACIFIC 2-1: The final Imperial Cup game was played on Saturday at Confederation Park in North Vancouver and featured the Premier Division Westside FC and the Division 1—and newly-promoted—Norvan Pacific. After a hard-fought 90 minutes of action, the visiting Westsiders walked away with a hard-earned 2-1 victory. Westside opened the scoring at the 25th minute mark when Sebastian Crema beat a couple of Norvan defenders down the right flank and proceeded to send an impeccable, low cross onto the path of John Stonehocker who neatly tapped the ball into the Norvan net for the go-ahead goal. Norvan Pacific, however, got back into the match in the late stages of the first half when Nick Seddon was denied an obvious goalscoring opportunity when his shot was handled by defender Chris Mehuys on its way to the goal. A penalty kick was awarded to Norvan and Mehuys was sent off the pitch, reducing Westside to 10 men for the remainder of the match. On the ensuing penalty kick, Kyle Guay easily scored the tying goal, thus ending the first half at 1-1. Despite being down a man, the Westsiders turned in an inspired performance during the entire second half as they defended tenaciously and counter-attacked frequently and dangerously. Both teams had several goalscoring opportunities during the second stage with Sebastian Crema, Wyatt Seddon-Johnstone, and Taku Bradshaw coming close to scoring for Westside FC and Norvan’s Matt Harwell, Sean Regan, and Nick Seddon barely missing their chances at the other end of the pitch. However, it was the Westsiders that were rewarded for their determination and hard work at the 75th minute mark, when a loose ball—off a corner kick—was deposited into the back of the net by Westside’s veteran central defender, Andrew Czalij. Brent Dodge and Nick Seddon turned in excellent performances in the Norvan Pacific midfield as they worked tirelessly throughout the contest. For Westside FC, defender Andrew Czalij was a tower of strength for the entire 90 minutes, while midfielder John Stonehocker and forward Sebastian Crema also deserve special mention for their superlative performances. As a result of the hard-fought victory, Westside FC advances to the quarter-finals of the Imperial Cup where they will face the winner of the upcoming Delta United – ICST Pegasus match.

PREMIER DIVISION

MAKE-UP GAMES

CROATIA SC - AKAL FC 2-0: On Wednesday evening, at Vancouver Technical School, the Croatians improved their chances of remaining in the Premier Division by defeating the desperate Akal FC by a 2-0 margin in a Day 21 make-up game. Croatia SC dominated most of the proceedings but had to wait till very late in the game to score both goals. Midway through the first half, Croatia’s veteran defender/midfielder Darko Jelic had a glorious opportunity to give his team the lead but his close-range shot just barely missed the net after he had been set up by a wonderful cross from Kresimir Bebic Shortly thereafter, at about the 35th minute mark, Jelic’s attempt once again went awry as his shot—on a cross by Selim Nahdi—was saved by Akal’s goalkeeper, Nuno Jesus. Early in the first half, Jelic became the provider as he set up Philip Kotter with a well-executed free kick. Unfortunately for Kotter—and the rest of the Croatian clan—his header sailed over the crossbar. Soon thereafter, Akal FC came very close to opening the scoring when Desmond Tachie flew in on goal on a breakaway, only to watch agonizingly as his finishing touch barely missed the net. Finally, at the 80th minute mark, the Croatians took the lead when Andre` Costa took advantage of a defensive blunder, intercepted an Akal back pass to goalkeeper Nuno Jesus, and easily scored what proved to be the winning goal from close range. A few minutes later, Croatia’s youth call-up Lucas Sweda made a fantastic run down the right flank before crossing the ball to Paul Bolina who unselfishly fed a wide-open Corey Sanford at the back post. Sanford’s initial effort was well-saved by Nuno Jesus, but he picked up his own rebound and fired home the insurance marker. The entire Croatia SC team played remarkably well, but special mention should be made of goalkeeper Didar Sandhu for registering his 5th consecutive shutout. Also, Jure Krpan was dominant in the middle of the defensive line, while Andrew Sciampacone turned in an amazing performance in the middle of the park. The result keeps the Croatians slightly out of the dreaded relegation zone, while Akal FC now needs a minor miracle to remain in the Premier Division.

SAPPERTON ROVERS - WEST VAN FC 2-1: Also on Wednesday evening, at Queen’s Park Stadium in New Westminster, the Sapperton Rovers kept their dreams of staying in the Premier Division alive by defeating West Van FC by a 2-1 margin in a Day 19 make-up game. The Rovers turned in one of their best performances of the season, against a very strong and physical West Van team. Sapperton opened the scoring very early in the match when Colin Phillips was sent on a partial breakaway by Jason Pierotti and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Marco Durante from the edge of the penalty area. Facing a must win situation, the Rovers kept pressing and came close to adding to their margin on a couple of occasions but efforts by Colin Phillips and Mark McQuade..went awry. In the second half, West Van FC fought back tenaciously and almost equalized on a few occasions but Sapperton’s goalkeeper—Garth Lagasse—came up with a few outstanding saves on efforts by Ryan Glanville, Kevin Crouch, Jesse Fetterley, and Alan McIndoe. Finally, at about the 55th minute mark, Bruno Teixeira knotted the score when he volleyed home a cross by Ryan Glanville. However, Sapperton bounced back and once again took the lead at the 70th when Jason Pierotti was fed a brilliant through ball by Mark McQuade and unleashed a wicked drive from well outside the penalty area, a drive that gave goalkeeper Marco Durante no chance whatsoever. Defensively, Brayden Volkenant and veteran Sven Wagner played extremely well for the victors, while midfielder Mark McQuade and forward Jason Pierotti caused the West Van defenders headaches all game long. The Rovers now find themselves only 2 points behind the Punjab Hurricanes, with both teams having 2 league games left to play. West Van FC, on the other hand, is in a 6th place tie with ICST Pegasus, with 34 points from 23 games.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: SAPPERTON ROVERS for their upset 2-1 victory over the highly-favoured West Van FC in a very important regular season match. Led by the excellent performances of forward Jason Pierotti, midfielder Mark McQuade, and defenders Sven Wagner and Brayden Volkenant, the Rovers fully earned their remarkable victory, a result which keeps their hopes of avoiding relegation alive.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sapperton Rovers’ forward JASON PIEROTTI for his superlative performance in his team’s 2-1 victory over West Van FC. All game long, Pierotti drove the West Van defenders to distraction with his pace, skill, and grit. To cap off a brilliant individual performance, Pierotti—after having set up Sapperton’s initial goal—scored the winning goal on a great individual effort. For his outstanding performance, JASON PIEROTTI will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2011-03-25.
