Men’s U-18 Team
10 November 2011
Canada sends youth development team to Costa Rica

The Canadian Soccer Association has announced its men’s U-18 development group will hold an 11-day camp in San José, Costa Rica. The national camp, led by coach Robert Gale, will run 16 to 26 November and will feature 20 players born 1995 or later.

The men’s U-18 development group has been established to provide additional international experience for Canada’s youth players in the coming years. The 1995-born players are no longer eligible at the U-17 level, so they must work towards the U-20 international competitions in 2013 (when they are 18) and 2015 (as the CONCACAF and FIFA events are held every two years). The group is also eligible to play in the Olympic U-23 category in 2016 (held every four years).

As part of the camp, the Canadian team (whose players are currently categorized as U-16) will face Costa Rica in a two-match international series. Of note, the Edson Soto-coached Costa Rica U-16 team recently won the Torneo Sub-16 de la UNCAF as Central American champions.

“This is a great opportunity for our 1995-born players to gain valuable experience at the international level against a very talented Costa Rica side,” said Canadian U-18 development coach Rob Gale. “International football competition helps prepare our youth players towards representing our great country at the national “A” level. The staff and players are very much looking forward to this challenging series against Costa Rica.”

This will mark coach Gale’s first turn at the helm of a national youth camp. Earlier this year, Gale served as an assistant coach for Canada at the CONCACAF Men’s Under-17 Championship (silver medal) and FIFA U-17 World Cup.

From those competitions, Gale has already worked with four of the 1995-born players brought into this newly-formed U-18 development group. Luca Gasparotto, Sadi Jalali and Michael Petrasso all represented Canada at this year’s FIFA U-17 World Cup Mexico 2011. The trio, along with Dylan Carreiro, also won silver at the CONCACAF Men’s Under-17 Championship in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Nine other 1995-born players have previous experience in the Canadian youth system. That group all took part in a U-15 international series against USA in October 2010 (Canada and USA split the two-match series). Seven players (including the two youngest who were born in 1996) are taking part in their first national youth camp.

To date, Canada has won two CONCACAF men’s youth championships: the CONCACAF Men’s Under-20 Championship in 1986 and 1996. It has also participated in 13 FIFA youth competitions: eight FIFA U-20 World Cups and five FIFA U-17 World Cups. Of the 34 players that have represented Canada at the national 'A' level in 2011, 28 of them previously participated in a national youth camp at one point in their career. From that group of 28 players, 19 of them participated in either a FIFA U-20 World Cup or a FIFA U-17 World Cup.

So BC's only contribution to this intake is Findlay!

5 players from Alberta
2 players from Manitoba
a great big zero from British Columbia!

disgrace.

So my country can't score a single goal in two games against Panama and Saint Neverheardofit -- and now my province can`t place a single player on the next generation of Canadian internationals.

That`s just brilliant.

Oh - and they are under about six feet of snow in Alberta and Manitoba from now until May. Somthing just doesn`t add up.

Why is Findlay on the coaching staff?

For a guy who should be responsible for the lack of production in high-level BC-born players, well, erm,... yeah

Why are we so shocked at this? Do we not realize that BC soccer has lost it's mojo? Seriously our best athletes play hockey for the most part. I have little or no faith in the management / coaching of BC soccer at the highest level as well.

Well, it's happened again...

Canada M16 announces roster for camp in Italy | Canada Soccer

Really? No one from BC? They scour Ontario for players inside and outside TFC's Academy but in BC?

I've beat up the BC Provincial teams for this but I think they get a pass on this one. This is neglect on the CSA and their staff.

The U15's had a whack of players from BC last year (BC coach) but this year (Manitoba)?

Wow again......are we really that far behind? Perhaps a look at our Provincial Programs and how players are selected. Maybe look after the kids a bit instead of charging an arm and a leg to play provincially.....might be a start. Maybe look at ALL youth players playing soccer in the province and not just the ones playing in the ONLY league BC Soccer will look at? Just a few thoughts but I can't believe another National Team at any level has NO BC players on it. At least Findlay will get to be assistant coach again.....right? Seems fair

Speaks well for HPL. Do you have two grad, if you do you play. At best gold players. Same goes for MSL. If you belong to a cleak you are in. Sevety percent of kids are non athletic. Tha's the reason they do not get selected.
Skill alone does not cut it. World speed is five times faster than MSL.Four times faster then HPL coaching.
Kids only work with the ball do not work off of the ball. That's te reason none get sellected.

Jonesy, thanks for bringing this to our attention. This is really shocking because this is the age group that was supposed to benefit from the Whitecaps Residency program. According to Fonseca at the CSA, the 3 Canadian MLS Residency teams are supposed to produce players for the CSA teams. I wondered if the absence of BC players from the team roster is due to the Whitecaps not releasing the players but I noticed two non-BC Whitecaps Residency names on the list.

Ontario is a big place. There is four times as many kids playing in Ontario and Qubeck than here. Also the main training centre is there. For players from BC costs are huge. Till they add a second training centre for kids from Western Canada BC will be forgoten. There is five very good players on Vancouver Icland for that age. None were selected. Parents have no money. Kids on Caps residancy are from all over the World. Even if you see four kids from the program none come from BC. Alberta is close and their kids did come to BC to play on resdency program. Now with Colin Miller in Edmonton you could see Alberta grow it's own program. As you did see Edmonton FC is almost as good as Caps with sixteenth of a budget Caps get.
