Canada's Men's Under-20 Team earned a 1-0 win over Ecuador in an international friendly played at Estadio Rommel Fernandez in Panama City, late Thursday.

Tyler Rosenlund scored the game's only goal in the 41st minute. Vince Stewart played a great ball into Rosenlund who took on two players in the box and buried his shot high in the near corner.

"The boys were full value for this win," said Canadian head coach Dale Mitchell. "The only disappointing thing about tonight was that we didn't add to our goal with some of the chances we created. The victory should do our confidence some good heading in qualifying."

The Canadians will train in Ft. Lauderdale for the next four days before taking a one week break. They will return to Florida on January 17 for their final preparation before leaving for Honduras where they will begin CONCACAF Qualifying on January 26.

Vinny is/has rejoined us from a pretty successful first year at SFU from what I've heard. We also just inked Justin Carvery from the Hill as well. Together, up front, we've run up 6 goals in two games. We're a cohesive unit, in perfect harmony... We're as good as the black and white cookie.

5 down 10 to go

Canada plays Mexico today at 5pm, in Honduras. Top two teams in the group make it to Holland for the world finals this summer. Unfortunately its not on TV, nor are the next two games for Canada.
Mitchell picked 6 BC players for his team - Rosenlund, O'Neil, Stewart, D'agostino, Wilson, and Peetboom. Pretty good showing from the VMSL.

Steve, what PPV channel. Two more games coming up vs host Honduras on Friday then vs Jamaica on Sunday.

Rosenlund and Stewart were the only 2 BC players to start. O'Neil and Wilson came on as subs late in the game.

Men's Youth (U-20) Team
Canada Books Spot in World Youth Championships
Friday, January 28, 2005

San Pedro Sula, Honduras – Canada’s U20 National Team defeated Honduras 1-0 on Friday evening, solidifying a place in this summer’s FIFA World Youth Championships. Some resolute defending and a well-placed lob off the boot of Calgary’s Ryan Gyaki midway through the second half sealed the Canucks ticket to Holland in front of a raucous crowd at the Estadio Francisco Morazan.

The victory also sealed top spot in Group B, regardless of the outcome of the Mexico vs. Honduras match on Sunday afternoon.

The first half saw Canada absorb some early pressure from the Hondurans who certainly seemed buoyed by the home support.

The best chance of the half occurred early (14th minute) in the encounter when a Canadian giveaway in the midfield sprung the Honduras attack. Ramon Nunez made his way to the right side of the Canadian penalty area then unleashed a rocket toward Josh Wagenaar’s goal, forcing the Grimsby, ON native into a superb reflex save.

Roughly a half hour later, the Canadian ‘keeper had to deal with a heart-pounding bobble at his six-yard box off a long range shot. However, Wagenaar managed to get his positioning right and took the bounce off the shoulder, and then pounced on the loose ball to avert disaster.

After the break, the Canadians seemed far more organized and rarely looked bothered by the Honduran attack. It appeared as though they would attempt to catch Honduras on the break and in minute 61, they did just that.

After some excellent defending from Vince Stewart (Delta, BC), the wing-back started what would be the decisive move for Canada and quite possibly Canada’s best inter-play of the two games (61st minute).

Stewart served a low, hard ball into the feet of Will Johnson. Johnson wasted little time and laid the ball for Marcel De Jong who had joined the attack from his wide-left position. De Jong then found Tyler Rosenlund near the right corner of the Honduras penalty area and the Port Coquitlam native took the pass on his chest, in stride. Rosenlund then clipped a delicate ball toward Gyaki who had made a slicing run through the area. The Calgary, AB midfielder, without hesitation, turned quickly and lobbed his shot over the helpless Honduran keeper.

The Hondurans went searching for the equalizer but found the Canadian defence incredibly difficult to break down.

But in the waning moments of the match, the Canadian’s survived a major scare. Some miscommunication at the back led to a Honduran breakaway, but just as the striker neared the penalty spot, Wagenaar burst from his goal and forced the Honduran to try and emulate Gyaki’s opener. But the Honduran’s shot sailed over the bar and with it went any chance at securing a point.

“We had to defend a lot tonight,” said Canadian Head Dale Mitchell during his post-game press conference.

“Honduras had a lot of the ball and to be fair, the result was never clear. As much as we are happy to be heading to the World Championships, we are still quite fortunate to escape with all three points.”

Mitchell concluded by adding, “Chemistry is a very big thing in sport and this team certainly has an abundance of it. Our biggest problem was we couldn’t keep the ball enough to really cause Honduras problems, but the guys worked incredibly hard and together, they dug out the win.”

Canada also beat Jamaica 1-buzz yesterday to win every game in their group!!!! That's three on the trot for the Canadian U-20 team. Sign of a good thing, me thinks! We rightfully deserve to host the 2007. Well done Cam, Tyler and Stitch for qualifying out of a tough group!
