Canucks Name Alain Vigneault Head Coach
Tue. Jun 20, 2006

Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks Senior Vice-President and General Manager Dave Nonis announced today that Alain Vigneault has been named Head Coach of the Vancouver Canucks.

"We are excited to be making this announcement today," said Dave Nonis. "Alain has enjoyed success at many levels and has proven that he can thrive in a great hockey market like Vancouver. His familiarity with the players and our organization will undoubtedly be an asset as we build towards the future."

Vigneault, 45, becomes the 16th Head Coach in club history with the announcement made today. He previously served in the NHL as Head Coach of the Montreal Canadiens from 1997-2001, becoming the organization’s second youngest coach in club history at the age of 36. Vigneault has compiled an NHL record of 109-118-35-4, reaching the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals during his first season behind the Canadiens bench and was nominated for the Jack Adams Award as NHL Coach of the Year, following the 1999-2000 season.

Vigneault joins Vancouver from the club’s AHL affiliate, the Manitoba Moose, where he led the team to within one game of the conference finals. In the 2005-06 season, his first season with the Moose, Vigneault guided the club to a 44-24-7 record.

Prior to joining the Moose, Vigneault spent 13 seasons as Head Coach in the QMJHL with Trois-Rivieres, Hull, Beauport and PEI. In 1988, Vigneault led the Olympiques into the Memorial Cup and was subsequently named CHL Coach of the Year. He has also been honoured as coach of the QMJHL’s Second All-Star team on three separate occasions.

Vigneault has also achieved success on the international stage. He served as an Assistant Coach with Canada’s National Junior Team in 1989 and 1991, winning a gold medal at the 1991 World Junior Championships in Saskatoon.

The Gatineau, Quebec-native began his career in the NHL playing for the St. Louis Blues from 1981 to 1983. Drafted by the Blues in the eighth round, 167th overall in the 1981 Draft, the defenceman recorded two goals, five assists and 82 penalty minutes in his NHL career. Vigneault went on to serve as a scout for the Blues for two seasons and as an Assistant Coach for the Ottawa Senators from 1992 to 1996.

And what would you no-minds have done?

Pat Quinn?

Offer Bowman $10,000,000 ?

Pat Quinn in a second......Vigneault is soft spoken and easy going that is why he was run out of Montreal and hasn't been in the league. His bum tapping won't work here either.

Look for Bertuzzi to be gone this weekend in a trade. Come on Lonogo!!

Regs, I've got nothing against Vigneault but it simply appears on paper to be a rehashing of the Tom Renney debacle. If Bertuzzi is still here he and his cronies will eat this guy alive. If he's not, well, okay, this could turn out to be a good hiring. But on the face of things...

Anyway, who really cares, hockey is the most boring of any of the major sports by far.

Can you do something about your tribute to Ronaldo? At least a leaf over his package or something?

Pat Quinn was a long shot. Too much $$, if he coached Vancouver, he could make even more money missing the playoffs, leaving MORE money and ticket sales for his Vancouver Giants. (Minority Owner).

It's right fcuking there! Impossible to avoid. It's like walking down Granville street trying to avoid panhandlers. You try, but eventually, you have to deal with one.

What were you thinking w/ that selection? Looks like something my 18 year old niece would have up in her bedroom.

Seriously man, dress him up a little. A fig. Anything.
