Kelowna 2010 Tournament

I haven't played in this tourney in about 3 years... It has gone totally down hill from it's glory years in the 90's... We won it a few times with Surrey U at the tail end of the 90's and again at PAU in the mid 2000's...
There used to be big money on the line ($2000) and quality teams getting hammered and seeing who could cope best... The last bunch of years it became shite teams wearing yellow boots thinking they were special aaaand not even drinking before their match... Sad really.
CFL, I hope it has got better the last few years!? You have to stuff those twats from Edmonton Italia as I'm sure they have never won anything before other than this tourney (their wold cup)

I think us Nomads would have gone back, but the tourney organizer (Graham I think?) really screwed us over two years ago and don't think we'll ever go back, although our guys have gone with other teams...
The beer garden left a lot to be desired compared to legendary stories I had heard of in the past...

Being from Ktown I can tell you what happened to the tournament...
Your all right..It use to rival any tournament from tons of spectators to huge beers gardens and great food. It was the event all the locals would take in which made the beer gardens huge and all the single okanagan girls lookin for love use to stop in for a cold one on the way to the clubs Saturday night.
Not to mention the good teams and prize money that use to be involved.
The May long weekend in Ktown also had the Knox Mountian Hill Climb car race and huge baceball/Slow Pitch tournaments. The city was bumpin.
Skinny dippin with the local chicks after the packed clubs was a fav for most guys.
Renting boats between games or staying at a hotel with a pool or near the beach...Aahh the memories...
The perfect place to go to get away from the big city.
The Tournament was run and called the " Zodiac" Tournament. Named after the sponsor and organizer The Rutland Zodiac Pub. (and Soccer Club)
The Zodiac Pub and Zodiac soccer club (a very well respected and good local club)
folded after new owners of the Pub took over.(some years ago)
All though the name is still used, The Zodiac Pub does not run the tournament anymore.
The tournament is run by the Kelowna Sport and Recreation Center.
The Government ! For real the government runs the tournament.
They follow the same formula as set down from years before...But without the soccer passion the Zodiac Club had.
Grant Campbell who runs the tournament now...never played competitive soccer and doesnt know or have the contacts to invite the proper teams needed to help make the weekend a success. He works for the Rec Center and has a bottom line to be accountable for. So he dropped the Prize money because he couldnt get the teams registered to cover the expences.
Again without a Soccer Club running the event and haveing the Government running it with a bottom line to watch out for...It just became an event with no life..or heart.
I went to school with Grant and hes a hell of a nice guy....But hes not a soccer guy.
He gets paid to run the same tournament every year which is now set up to break even and just attract enough teams to fill the surrounding motels.
The Zodic tournament was so good ,that back in the day the local teams would have to play off to see who would get 1 of the 2 local spots only..The Zodiacs haveing the other.
Now its a fight and an arm twist to get the local teams to enter...Sad actually.

The Penticton tourny runs that same weekend and the competition is equally as bad...possibly worse. We (Williams Lake) won the Kelowna tourny last year if that says anything. 8 teams...some teams from the valley, edmonton, etc. We're going again just because nothing beats the Okanagan in the summer (reference Ghouse's post). Both of these tournaments can learn from Kamloops Aug Long as there is big prize money and huge beer gardens which promotes quality teams to make it (inter, wvan, etc.)
One tournament that is an absolute riot is Revelstoke...always 20+ teams, decent prize money and the whole community comes out for it. I also forgot to mention there is a foam party each year.

We beat the B Cup eventual winner handily in the prelims, but lost the first game (A 8am Saturday Morning game following a 5 am bedtime Friday night!) by 4 goals and somehow in a three way tie were eliminated by the two teams we beat, on goal differential! FFS...
He was so confused about his decision that he handed kjohnsob half a roll of beer tix and kjohnsob ended up getting so drunk that he got megged forwards and backwards by a chick in the beer gardens during a game of keepyuppy. (perhaps the best part of the beer garden all weekend!

The Zodiacs started the tournament as a Fundraiser and when they folded...The tournament should have folded too...But the Rec Center wanted to keep it running to keep the local aarea busy with peeps.
A guy running a tournament for a pay check will not put in the effort or passion a tournament like this with the history behind it needs.

ahhh good times!!! Man was that a fun weekend!! I'm considering goin up this year if there's a team lookin for guys!! Too much fun to pass up

I like the casino in Kelowna......and Penticton........and Kamloops. All great tournaments.

Man I regret even opening this thread, sounds to me like this is going to be a downer of a year at Kelowna hahaha. I will have to drown my sorrows at flashbacks.

Hahah... Ghouse I like your style. Is there any actual local teams though that are planning on going? Always good times getting together with some local boys at the clubs? I know we recruited KJohn back from edmonton for this tourny.
