Not that Bruins fans are in any position right now to criticize roster construction, BUT...
pay four softer than butter forwards 40 million bucks to collectively go the full (Joe) Thornton at the first sign of adversity (read: Tkachuk, Matthew and Bennett, Sam);
cobble together a patchwork group of blueliners with one arguable top 2 D and the next closest 40 years old and fading fast;
sign a couple of complete bandaid goaltenders and then be shocked when both are out when you need them the most.
is that harsh? maybe. but soy latte boy has been sneering about analytics for the entirety of his tenure, and the reality is that said tenure has been a complete failure. they should have moved one of the other three for D help the second they signed JT; instead they gambled that their pro scouting could identify depth veterans to sign on the cheap to fill out the roster.
in contrast, the Panthers gave up an 110 point forward and a better D man than anything Toronto has (with the exception of Reilly maybe) to acquire Matthew Tkachuk. The same scribes fawning over Toronto's core pilloried Florida for that move in the off-season.
Bill Zito knows what he's doing. Dubas should be looking for work in a few weeks, but this is MLSE so who knows...
