Match Preview: Ottawa Fury v Vancouver Whitecaps – Defending the Cup

Vancouver Whitecaps defence of the Voyageurs Cup begins today!

It is the classic David vs Goliath story, sort of. A MLS side vs a NASL side to decide who gets to the Canadian Championship Final. Vancouver Whitecaps head to face Ottawa Fury for the first time ever and they only have one thing on their mind – defending the Cup.

With the Whitecaps being the highest finishers of the three Canadian MLS teams in the league standings last year, they get, on paper, what should be the easiest semi-final – facing the lowest rank side left in the competition, namely whoever won the battle of the NASL Canadians. That’s Ottawa Fury, who are here by virtue of beating their western Canadian cousins FC Edmonton in the preliminary round.

The did it the hard way, winning 3-0 on the road in the first leg before giving up two goals at home in the second leg, before eventually hanging on for the 3-2 aggregate win.

TACTICS AND LINE-UPS:

It would be a bad idea for the Whitecaps coaching staff to underestimate the Ottawa Fury. They have been hungry for trophies, even though they are a ‘young’ club. Last year they came first in the Fall NASL Season, and were runners-up in Soccer Bowl 2015.

They even have some Canadian Men’s national team talent on their side. They get more call ups than the Whitecaps through Marcel de Jong and Julian de Guzman. In fact that may end up being a blessing for the ‘Caps as we may have an easier time against them without the ageless de Guzman.

Ottawa will want to show up the Whitecaps and show that they don’t need Canadian soccer stars to win, especially since this year the season doesn’t seem to be off to a good start for them as they sit in 8th place in the NASL Spring Season standings.

We will see some serious squad rotation from the Whitecaps this game. We’ll see a number of Whitecaps who have not played too much getting starting time, a bulk of them Canadians.

Kianz Froese and Marco Bustos come to mind first; if they perform well, they should see some MLS starts coming. I would love to see Sam Adekugbe start, which he most likely will, as I think his pace could do lots of damage to Ottawa. Ben McKendry will almost certainly start. Whether he slots in as a defensive midfielder beside Russell Teibert in a 4-2-3-1 or more offensively in a 4-4-2 formation, is the only real question that remains.

It was also confirmed that the 15-year-old Whitecap Wunderkid Alphonso Davies will play at some point (I am feeling a 60th minute sub), and Davies is the only USL player to earn a call up to the ‘Caps initial 20-man roster.

As for the rest of the ‘Caps I would like to see a bit more veteran influence, especially considering the next game will be in a week, and the next MLS game is June 18th. For me, Pa Modou Kah and Tim Parker should start for this game if the Caps are going to take it seriously, but Cole Seiler is more likely to get the nod beside Parker, and the pair formed a good partnership preseason.

Octavio Rivero could get the starting spot up top, hopefully with Nicolas Mezquida, but Erik Hurtado is likely to get the nod instead of the Uruguayan.

As for the ‘keeper, if Sunday’s WFC2 game was a good indication, which it surely was, Paolo Tornaghi gets the nod the games again this year, ahead of Marco Carducci. At least it gives David Ousted some well deserved rest for saving the Whitecaps in the last game, and many others!

AFTN’S OPPOSITION MAN TO WATCH :

Jonny Steele – the Northern Irishman, and former Whitecap, can make things happen when he has the ball, although Ottawa’s lack of finishing may be a concern for them.

THE VIEW FROM 202 CREW’S PREDICTIONS :

Nick: 1-1, hard fought draw

Dan: 2-0 ‘Caps

Joe: 0-0

Really looking forward to this match and seeing some of the younger Cap Canadians in the line-up!

Agree.

I also think they need to start Octavio. Hurtado seems to have found his place in the line-up, and that is as a late sub, and also to push the other, more established strikers. He's likely benefited by Kudo being hurt.

They need to start Riv to keep the flow going. He's now 2 goals for his last 2 starts, what better way to keep him sharp, and keep his momentum, and confidence, on an upswing. There is time to rest after this match, so I see no harm in playing him till his legs fall off, and plenty of harm in NOT starting him. To give Hurtado a start as a reward at the expense of Rivero would be a mistake, but we've seen Robo make some dumb personnel decisions far too frequently, so I would not be shocked.

Really hoping for a strong performance out of McKendry and Bustos, in particular. I think we know what we have in Froese, which is, meh. I don't think we know what we have, at all, in McKendry at a higher level, and I think everyone still expects greater things from Bustos. Would love to see ALL the Canadian shine in this one.

OK I've seen enough, get these guys out of there.

So poor at all levels... some appear to have an attitude of being better than their opponent so that should be enough (I'm looking at you Kianz)

Funny was just thinking the exact same thing.

That, and Hurtado. You can never fault him on effort, but he's simply not a good striker.

What's with Robo's long leash? Doesn't have to make all three subs at once, but how about 1, and kick over a Gatorade cooler for good measure?

So, in the interest of expdiency (cause I'm fcuking busy, OK?), I'm going to do something I try never to do, which is copy and paste a post I made in, erm, another social media outlet. The one I go to when my diary on TTP here doesn't talk back.

First, the only good news out of last night was Davies; he was a breath of fresh air. I want to see more of him with the big club.

I was honestly too pissed to even post last night.

My honest impression at the beginning was that certain young Canadians started the game as though their shite didn't stink. A huge under estimation of a good squad that went far last season, with good, seasoned pros. What made these kids (Bustos, Ferose, Sam) think they were actually a higher caliber squad? Most of these guys had been playing ULS2, a clear level below NASL. They have not been playing MLS, so they should have approached this match as the underdog, not as the favorite. You could just tell by the way they carried themselves they were more than a tad high on themselves, and overconfident.

Hurtado was not the problem last night, but neither was he the solution. Simply put, for me, he's not a featured striker at the MLS level, or this level. Certainly not playing alone on the Island. In retrospect, having Perez would have been fantastic (is he even available? Maybe away for Copa?), as a veteran presence up top that can hold play up properly.

I feel it was a massive mistake not starting Rivero, and a blunder as well not starting Bustos in a position of strength. He's not a winger, that's been proven. He's a player that needs to be in the middle, with the ball at his feet, to influence a match.

And, sorry, Sam was not near good enough last night. He needs to be stronger on the coverage in the box. Sure, he doesn't have height, but he can do a much better job disrupting a cross than he did on that second goal. That was rubbish, and the kid was clearly out battled. Sam, if you aspire to be an MLS player, you need to win that battle. I bet if you put Sam in a gym environment, his vertical is way higher than most. Not saying he can make up that gap, but a good defender, no matter how big or small, knows they need to battle in the air to, at the very least, disrupt the play, and get the ball on the ground and out of danger. That is priority #1. He was simply out matched by an NASL player, a bad sign for his perceived progress.

As for Fraser, he was trying to make chicken salad out of chicken shite. I will give him a pass based on his overall strong body of work and effort this year at the MLS level, and his effort last night was consistent with that. I really like this kid.

Ferose, don't even get me started. Did he even come out of the room last night? Because I didn't see him. Houdini act.

I'm disappointed about the result, but even more disappointed about the performances of those three young Canadians.
