Young players score Coca-Gola scheme (29 July 2004)
Coca-Cola Great Britain has come up with a bold incentive scheme for the English Football League: score 4,500 or more goals next season and it will fund one young, up-and-coming or apprentice player, at each of the League’s 72 clubs, for an entire season!
In real terms, the soft-drinks corporation has offered the league a cool £1million, if its clubs can score the stipulated record goal haul. The money will be paid into a fund, from which all of the 72 clubs may draw, in order to aid their development of a young player.
Coca-Cola sponsorship manager, Steve Cumming, explained that the “£1million Goal Chase" is a fun idea that he hopes will bring added excitement to the league season - in anticipation of gaining something genuinely valuable to clubs and fans alike: new talent.
