Vogts 'could be boss by January'
By Peter Jardine

German football legend Berti Vogts remains in the frame to become Scotland's new manager - and could be installed in time for the Euro 2004 draw in January.
The 55-year-old, who led Germany to victory at Euro 96 at Wembley, was quoted as saying there has been 'contact' from the SFA.

Although Vogts, currently under contract to the Kuwait Football Federation until next summer, added that he will be staying on in the Gulf for now, it is understood he has not withdrawn interest in the Hampden post.

Craig Brown stated last week that Vogts would make an ideal choice as his successor, should the SFA take the foreign option.

Bucky,

What do you think of Berti?

Btw, will you be watching the World Cup next summer over at your Father's house?

Man United goalkeeper wanted for butter ads for supermarket chain

LONDON (AP) - Fabien Barthez's goalkeeping blunders have earned him a "butterfingers" reputation. So a British supermarket chain is offering the Manchester United goalkeeper a contract - promoting butter.

Tesco said Tuesday it would approach Barthez, the French World Cup and European Championship winner, in the coming weeks to advertise its own brand of butter. Barthez made two glaring errors that helped archrival Arsenal to a 3-1 win on Sunday and his slippery fingers caught the attention of the supermarket.

"He's rich, smooth and spreads well - exactly the same qualities displayed by our butter," Tesco dairy produce spokesman Simon Soffe said in a statement.

"After after Sunday's performance, no one can doubt that Fabien is the ultimate butterfingers."

Soffe said Barthez could be used for the company's garlic butter or perhaps his own special brand.

"Barthez's goalkeeping errors may have put him on a slippery slope with his boss Sir Alex Ferguson but he may unwittingly have handed himself an additional contract.

"Barthez and butter could prove to be the greatest day for Anglo-French relations since the Channel Tunnel and the Concorde."

There was no immediate comment from Manchester United. Messages left on the club's press office answering machine were not immediately returned.

This is How Hitler started.

From Soccernet,

Bayern drop outspoken Effenberg

MUNICH, Germany (Reuters) - Bayern Munich captain Stefan Effenberg has been unexpectedly dropped from coach Ottmar Hitzfeld's lineup for Saturday's match against Hertha Berlin because of his criticism of unemployed people.
Outrage over the comments by the millionaire soccer star, who said that most jobless people were too lazy to look for work because unemployment benefits were too generous, has swept the country and even spilled into the German election campaign.

'The match against Hertha is so important for us and we need the complete support of the crowd for it,' said Hitzfeld of the home match in Munich's Olympic Stadium on Saturday.

Both teams are battling for third place in the league and a spot in next season's Champions League.

'I hope and expect that the fans will help us to get the three important points in the battle for a Champions League qualification spot,' Hitzfeld said.

Hitzfeld had earlier joined a chorus of criticism against Effenberg for calling most unemployed people lazy.

'It wasn't smart of him to make comments like that,' Hitzfeld had said earlier before announcing late on Friday Effenberg would be on the bench on Saturday.

'It's a burden for the whole team,' he added. 'But I hope that they can shake it off and concentrate on the match. Effenberg didn't do us any favours with the remarks.'

Effenberg, who earns a reported four million euros a year, has refused to apologise for his remarks but political leaders and union bosses have condemned them as tactless.

In an interview with Germany's Playboy magazine, Effenberg had highlighted the fact that jobless benefits were only slightly lower than the minimum wage by saying: 'I would cut jobless support to a minimum so that everyone would have to go to work.

'A lot are apparently living so comfortably from jobless benefits that they don't have any desire to get up early each morning and go to work.'

He added on Wednesday: 'I didn't want to insult the unemployed who are really looking for a job. But I think the mass of unemployed is the way I described it. People are attacking me for it but I'm entitled to my opinion.'

Effenberg, 33, has long been a controversial figure. He was dropped from the 1994 World Cup team after a match in Chicago against South Korea when he gave German fans a single finger gesture after being substituted following a poor performance.

He was subsequently sent home and has never played for Germany since.

Two years ago he paid a 167,000 mark out-of-court settlement after being charged with assault for hitting a woman in a Munich nightclub.

Kahn's porn to be wild

A porn actress has given German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn some advice on how to curb his temper - have sex before matches.

The wonderfully named Dolly Buster says a bit of what he fancies would do Kahn the world of good.

Her comments came after the Bayern Munich shot-stopper was involved in a dust-up with Bayer Leverkusen striker Thomas Brdaric during a Bundesliga match.

Buster told newspaper Abendzeitung: "A psychologist will not be able to help Kahn. He has just got too many hormones."

The Czech star added: "What he needs is sex. Maybe he should try passive sex like Ronaldo. That would definitely calm him down."

Ronaldo gave a TV interview earlier this month saying he and his wife enjoyed a bit of how's your father before every game he played.

When Kahn heard that a porn star was trying to give him some advice, he reportedly said it was none of David Seaman's business.
