Because the Irish national team was the only team that would give the square heads a game after all that World War 2 bother.

Naturally the teams swapped jerseys at the end.

The poor Germans only had the green Ireland jerseys to wear until the Marshall Plan finally set aside funds to buy the Gerries a new white kit. The Bosch realised how good teams in green looked and decided to keep wearing the Irish tops as their away kit.
