Re: The Superlative Azzi Week in Review

Only two Premier Division games were played this past weekend as the regular season is quickly coming to an end. Both results decided second place in each of the two groups as the Sapperton Rovers and ICSF Inter maintained their hold on that position by defeating Columbus-Clan FC and West Van FC respectively. Only one game remains to be played in the Premier Division, ICSF Inter and Sporting Club.

On Friday evening, at the newly constructed Point Grey School field, the recently crowned Imperial Cup champions Columbus-Clan FC dropped a 2-1 decision to the much more determined and motivated Sapperton Rovers. The Rovers dominated the entire first half, exhibiting some excellent ball control and pin-point passing. Led by forwards Trevor Todd and Luke Hogan, as well as midfielders Colin Phillips and Ted Ullrich, Sapperton had Columbus on its heels for most of the first 45 minutes of play. Despite the Rovers’ vast territorial advantage and a number of glorious scoring chances, the first half ended in a scoreless tie. Two of the above-mentioned goal-scoring opportunities saw Colin Phillips and Luke Hogan ring their shots off the goalpost with the Columbus goalkeeper well beaten. Early in the second half, Trevor Todd finally gave Sapperton a well-deserved lead as he took advantage of a defensive blunder to slot the ball into the empty net from the edge of the penalty area. At this juncture, Columbus seemed to wake up, started exerting some pressure of its own and eventually equalized when defender Bernd Schwericke one-timed the ball into the net on a great cross from Frank Troisi. At this point, Sapperton made a couple of key substitutions and, once again, took control of the match. Newly-inserted 19-year old Alex Jappy had a huge impact on the game as he worked tirelessly on the left flank, defending and attacking with speed and enormous determination. Capping off an outstanding individual performance, Jappy scored the late winner as he calmly controlled a Paul Raposo cross before blasting the ball into the top corner of the net. Young defenders Jassi Rhandawa and Cam Taylor were also instrumental in the victory as they kept the vaunted Columbus attack at bay for most of the match. As a result of the well-earned victory, the Rovers clinched second place in the Group ‘B’ table.

The second game was played on Sunday between ICSF Inter and West Van FC at Byrne Creek School in Burnaby. Once again, the narrow 2-1 final score in Inter’s favour was not indicative of the flow of the game as the Italians controlled the play from the opening whistle and were very unfortunate not to win by a wider margin. After a scoreless first half, veteran Laurent Scaligine opened the scoring early in the second half on a great set-up from young Alex Marrello. ICSF added to its lead a few minutes later as Scaligine scored his second goal of the match as he took advantage of a penetrating run by Mike Tempesta who beat 3 defenders before crossing the ball into the box. Very late in the game, West Van got on the score sheet as Tom Adamson blasted a long range shot into the back of the net. West Van veteran Mike Dodd, playing his last game in the Premier Division, was outstanding throughout the match, trying desperately to lead his team to a better result. Dodd has played in the Premier Division for 15 years and will be missed tremendously. On behalf of the entire VMSL family, we would like to thank Mike for his outstanding contribution to the league, both as an excellent player and as a true sportsman. We will miss you Doddy!

TEAM OF THE WEEK: ICSF INTER for its excellent performance in defeating the visiting West Van FC by a narrow 2-1 margin. After dropping a heart-breaking 2-1 decision to Columbus-Clan in the Imperial Cup final last weekend, Inter came back with a vengeance and played one of its best games of the season. As a result of the victory, ICSF lays claim on second place in the very tough Group ‘A’ of the VMSL’s Premier Division.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sapperton Rovers young left winger ALEX JAPPY for his enormous contribution to his team’s hard-earned 2-1 victory over Columbus-Clan FC. With the game tied at 1-1, JAPPY entered the game and immediately made tremendous impact with his penetrating runs and determined defending. Not only that, but JAPPY also scored the winning goal on a brilliant effort. For his outstanding performance, ALEX JAPPY will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2006-04-21. The pizza must be consumed on the premises.

Re: The Superlative Azzi Week in Review

VMSL teams got off to a great start in the Provincial Cup playdowns this past weekend as 6 of our teams advanced to the quarter-finals of the ‘A’ Cup. The only two teams to be eliminated—Sporting Club and Metro-Ford Wolves—lost to fellow VMSL teams, ICSF Inter and Firefighters respectively. In the Under 21 Provincial Cup, 3 of our 4 teams advanced to the next round with the heavily-favoured Norvan Norwick being the only one to suffer a loss, once again at the hands of another VMSL team, Burnaby Canadians. Ours Masters’ teams also fared very well with Wickham FC being the only one out of the 6 participating teams to suffer the indignity of elimination.

Things got off to a flying start on Saturday at Adanac Park when ICSF Inter knocked the defending Province Cup champions, Sporting Club, out of the competition by virtue of a well-earned 2-0 victory. In the first half, Inter controlled the majority of the play and fully deserved the 2-0 halftime lead. Tim Perry opened the scoring midway through the half when he headed home a great set-up by VJ Kos. Just before the halftime whistle, Joseph Marrello added the second goal when he converted a brilliant cross from Cristian Tropeano. In the second half, ICSF was forced to defend tenaciously as Sporting Club, led by the outstanding play of Mark Gomes and Mike Gomes, came surging forward in search of the all-important goal. However, the Inter defence, led by the outstanding play of central defenders VJ Kos and Scott Spracklin, was able to preserve the clean sheet for goalkeeper Dennis Kindel. ICSF midfielder Tim Perry not only scored what proved to be the winning goal, but also played extremely well in the middle of the park during the entire match. Inter now advances to the quarter-finals against arch-rival Columbus-Clan. The match will be played on Sunday at Adanac Park starting at 3:00 p.m.

In the second game of the Adanac Park Saturday double-header, the Vancouver Firefighters eliminated the Metro-Ford Wolves on penalty kicks after neither team was able to score in regulation time and overtime. The match was very evenly played even though Metro-Ford had by far the best chances to score. Former Whitecaps goalkeeper Mike Franks was at his absolute best as he made a couple of outstanding saves in regulation time on shots by former professionals Emilio Bottiglieri and Davide Xausa. In overtime, the Wolves squandered another glorious opportunity when Russel Huggon blasted the ball against the cross-bar from close range. All 5 Firefighters shooters were able to score from the penalty mark, while Mike Franks once again rose to the occasion in stopping Connor Cregg-Guinan’s shot. Defensively, former Metro-Ford player Travis Turner played extremely well for the Firemen, while Jeff Skinner displayed an enormous amount of skill and composure in the middle of the park. The Firemen will now travel to Cloverdale Athletic Park on Sunday to take on the heavily-favoured Surrey United. Kick off is slated for 3:00 p.m.

Also on Saturday, at Mercer Stadium in New Westminster, the Sapperton Rovers defeated the North Delta Lions (of the Fraser Valley League) by a 3-1 score. Sapperton controlled virtually the entire match and could easily have won the game by a much wider margin had it not been for some outstanding saves by the Delta goalkeeper and some atrocious finishing by the Rovers’ forwards. Paul Favaro, on a cross from Ted Ullrich, scored the opening goal for the Rovers at the 35th minute mark. After North Delta had tied things up early in the second half, Ryan McNabb received a pass from Colin Phillips, cleverly beat a couple of defenders and proceeded to slot the ball into the top far corner of the net from the top of the box. Very late in the game, Colin Phillips added the insurance marker when he pounced on a rebound—from a Mike Favaro shot—before tapping the ball home. The Rovers will now face much tougher competition in the quarter-finals when they take on the very dangerous Croatia SC.

On Sunday, Croatia SC travelled to the unfriendly confines of Victoria to take on the Gordon Head Titans of the Vancouver Island Soccer League. With numerous Croatian fans cheering for their team, Croatia SC was able to return home with a well-deserved 4-1 victory. Croatia took the early lead on a well-taken free kick by Aaron Keay as he curled the ball around the wall into the net for the opening goal. Unfortunately for Croatia, young Mirko Maras was ejected from the game just before the halftime whistle for serious foul play. The Titans took advantage of the situation as they controlled most of the play in the early going of the second half. After the Victoria team tied things up, the Croatians slowly began to turn the game into their favour with some lethal counter-attacks. On one of these counter-attacks, Steve Dickinson was able to capitalize on his speed and skill as he raced past a couple of defenders before cleverly chipping the ball over the head of the Gordon Head goalkeeper. A few minutes later, Croatia’s young goalkeeper—Andrew Haines—brilliantly saved a close-range shot to keep his team in the lead. The missed opportunity seemed to take the wind out of the Titans’ sails as Croatia came roaring back on yet another counter-attack to score the insurance marker when young Adrian Kekec calmly slotted home a powerful drive from just inside the penalty area. Kekec then added his second goal of the match in similar fashion just before the final whistle. Croatia will now take on the Sapperton Rovers on Sunday at Adanac Park at 1:00 p.m.

Also on Sunday, at Cloverdale Athletic Park, the heavily-favoured Surrey United struggled to defeat the upstart Langley United by a narrow 1-0 margin. The VMSL league winners seemed a little complacent against their Fraser Valley opponents and had to rely on a brilliant second-half effort by former professional Niall Thompson for the winning goal. Thompson took matters into his own hands as he beat a couple of Langley defenders before blasting the ball into the net. The Cloverdale-based team will have to play a whole lot better in the next round against the ever-dangerous Vancouver Firefighters!

Finally, also on Sunday at Byrne Creek School in Burnaby, Columbus-Clan FC made mince meat out the Fraser Valley champions, Chilliwack Rapids, and came away with a lop-sided 4-0 victory. Columbus scored the opening goal very early in the match when veteran Carmine D’Onofrio took advantage of a flat-footed Chilliwack defence as he sent Tiernan King flying in on goal with a brilliant pass. Soon thereafter, King increased the lead with a splendid solo effort that saw him round the keeper before easily depositing the ball into the net. In the second half, Columbus continued to dominate and quickly secured its lead when Tiernan King—on a great set-up from Craig Richards--repeated his previous feat by rounding the keeper and scoring his third goal of the match. King and Richards reversed roles a few minutes later as King turned provider and Richards finisher for the 4th and final goal of the match. As mentioned earlier, Columbus-Clan will now face ICSF Inter in the “Italian” derby on Sunday at Adanac Park.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: CROATIA SC for its gutsy performance in defeating the Gordon Head Titals by a 4-1 margin. It is never easy beating a Victoria team in Victoria. Not only did Croatia SC accomplish this very difficult feat, it did so playing with only 10 men during the entire second half. As a result of the well-earned victory, the Croatians will now advance to the quarter-finals of the Province Cup where they will meet the Sapperton Rovers.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Columbus-Clan’s TIERNAN KING for his brilliant display of goalscoring prowess in his team’s 4-0 victory over the highly-regarded Chilliwack Rapids. King scored 3 wonderful goals in his team’s decisive victory and also managed to set up the 4th goal by teammate Craig Richards. For his outstanding performance, TIERNAN KING will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2006-05-18.
