DAEGU, South Korea -- Steve Frazao of Port Coquitlam, scored the winning goal in a last-minute goalmouth scramble to lift the Canadian men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over China on Wednesday at the World University Games.
Frazao scored in the 90th minute for a surprising result against the Chinese, who were fourth at the 2001 Games in Beijing.
Canada is fielding a men's soccer team at the bi-annual, multi-sport Games for the first time since 1995 when Canada finished 15th in Fukuoka, Japan.
Frazao's UBC teammate, Aaron Richer of Vancouver, opened the scoring in the 37th minute. Chinese midfielder Fei Yu tied the game in the 48th. Canadian goalkeeper Jordan Robinson of Victoria held off several attempts by the Chinese in the second half.
Canada meets Uruguay on Friday and completes the round robin on Sunday against Iran.
