Scholorships went down

I believe that the NCAA lowered the amount of scholorships, either 1 or 2, that a program can offer, therefore the previously powerhouse schools lost some of their fringe recruits to other schools that had scholorships available. The impressive part is teams like Dooke who manage to turn over their availability into McDonald all americans. Other programs need to learn from them.

Not a stellar start.....

Local phenom Kyle Wilson had a rough start last night in his opening game with the U Mass Minutemen..........When your turnovers outnumber your points, you know you had a tough game.......

Massachusetts REBOUNDS PLAYER MIN FG FT 3PT OFF TOT AST PF ST TO PTS Jenkins 18 0-5 2-2 0-3 3 6 2 1 2 1 2 Brand 34 11-14 1-2 0-0 0 4 1 3 2 2 23 Rhymer 24 2-7 1-3 0-0 4 8 2 3 2 1 5

K Wilson 16 0-1 0-0 0-0 0 2 2 1 0 3 0

Also, number 3 Kansas was upset 93-91 by Ball State. Top ranked Duke needed a steal in the last 7 seconds to preserve an 80-79 victory of the Pirates of Seton Hall. College basketball is brilliant.

The top 10 is going to change

This is why a true sports fan loves college sports because on any given night the underdog has a chance.

Kansas and Georgetown both suffer early losses and combine that with Carolina and Kentucky it is going to make for an interesting year. These are 4 of the most storied programs in college basketball history, I wonder how they will respond to the early upsets.

Seton Hall

The Blue Devs-Pirates game might not have been such a surprise to those in the know. Seton Hall still has a core of recruits that came in under Tommy Amaker, including Marcus Toney-El and Andre Barrett. Seton Hall really should have been an elite-8 calibre team last season (think about it - Eddie Griffin and Samuel Dalembert were first round draft picks) and really fell apart due to internal strife. Had they kept their heads on straight, they would have made the NCAAs and probably done quite well given the talent level they had at their disposal.

This narrow loss to the consensus #1 might do a lot to get the Pirates back into the top 25. That being said, the three-way passing play between Duhon, Williams and Dunleavy to finish with the Jones dunk was one of the nicest college plays I've ever seen. Duke really is a different class. I think Duke could land 4 guys in the draft this year if they decide to come out at the same time.

Good question...

Two polls are released each week, the AP (associated press) and the Coaches Poll. I have no idea which one you posted.

Heels in trouble....

0-2 to start the season!

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- Matt Doherty has played on one of the few North Carolina teams to start a season 0-2.

Now he's coached one.

Four days after losing in the Smith Center to Hampton and one day after falling out of the Top 25, the Tar Heels lost in the final seconds to Davidson 58-54 Tuesday night.

Chris Pearson's slam dunk with 31.9 seconds left was the go-ahead basket and Peter Anderer made two free throws 21 seconds later to seal the upset as the Wildcats improved to 1-1.

The Tar Heels, ranked 19th in the preseason, haven't lost their opening two games since the 1982-83 season when Doherty was a junior. But those losses were to St. John's and Missouri, and not on the home court where the storied program had gone 176-27 prior to the two stunning losses.

"It's got to be low," Doherty said when asked about his team's confidence level. "So, after the game I was very positive with them.

"I was on a team that was 0-2 and should have been 0-3, but a guy named Jordan hit a jumper at the buzzer to put it into overtime and we beat Tulane in triple overtime. It does shake your confidence."

Michael Jordan isn't on this team or anybody who comes close. The Tar Heels have now lost twice to teams from the Mid-Eastern Athletic and Southern Conferences that have shot less than 40 percent.

"We've to got to go back to work, that's where we go from here," senior Jason Capel said. "We got better shots tonight, they're just not going in. That's the beauty of basketball, you can shoot the ball great one night and not so well the next."

North Carolina trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half and by eight with 2:31 left before Capel's 3-pointer capped an 8-0 run to tie it up with 55.6 seconds left.

But seconds later the North Carolina defense lost Pearman inside and got the game-winning basket after a pass from Michael Bree.

Seeing a zone for the second straight game, the Tar Heels shot 30 percent -- 25.6 percent in the second half -- as Doherty lost to his former high school coach Bob McKillop.

"It's a wonderful experience to be on a Broadway stage like this," McKillop said. "As a New Yorker, I know what it's like to be on Broadway and I think our players performed wonderfully."

Kris Lang started 0-for-7 and didn't score until getting a three-point play with 11:47 left that tied the score at 36-36. He finished 4-for-14, while Capel was 3-for-14.

Lang also lost a pass underneath from Capel with 10.4 seconds left that could have tied it.

"It just hit me right in the chest," said Lang, who watched in disgust as the ball -- and North Carolina's chances -- rolled out of bounds. "I take total blame for that. I just didn't catch it and finish."

After two losses, the Tar Heels have shot a combined 12-for-54 from beyond and arc and turned it over 36 times against zone defenses.

"We're not a good ballhandling team," Doherty admitted. "We've got to give guys an idea where the looks are in the zone -- faking passes, making passes. You do some basic drills you do when you were in basketball camp in fourth grade."

Anderer led the Wildcats, who lost to Charlotte by 14 points in their season opener, with 18 points.

Melvin Scott led the Tar Heels with 15 points.

Doherty changed two players in his starting lineup, but few things were different from the first 20 minutes of the team's season-opening upset loss to Hampton last week.

Scott made a 3-pointer to open the game, but the Tar Heels managed just one basket over the next 10:25 to fall behind 17-5.

During that stretch, North Carolina committed eight of its 14 first-half miscues, which included at least one turnover from nine different players as Doherty searched for a combination that would click.

"We realized that their confidence would be shot [after the Hampton loss] and that if we could hang with them through the first round that we would have a chance," McKillop said.

The Tar Heels fell behind Hampton 17-6 and never recovered.

This time, Scott brought North Carolina back late in the half with two 3-pointers and two free throws in a span of 1:07 to help forge a 27-27 tie at the break against a Davidson team playing without suspended starter Wayne Bernard.

The Wildcats helped the Tar Heels rally by missing 10 straight during a five-minute stretch.

If that is not enough........

Ball State 91 UCLA #4 73

This is shaping up to be a very exciting season. Next up for Ball State, the defending National Champions, Duke.

They have already knocked off the number 3 and 4 ranked teams in the country. Can they do it again?

Stay tuned.

Captain who has a new favorite college basketball team :)

Though his numbers might be appropriate for Chump of the Night , his impact obviously can't be measured in stats. How can I not love a team with a familymembersomewherealongtheline playing?

Surprised Sandman hasn't mentioned the whipping Duke laid on Iowa last night. The Hawkeyes are a pretty solid team with Recker, Evans and Hogan - and Alford is one of the better coaches in the country. And Duke beat the snot out of them. Dunleavy is going to surprise the hell out of everyone this season, he's gonna play himself right into the NBA lottery. He's a great shooter who always seems to knock down big shots.

In the other ACC/Big Ten Challenge game, the Terps of Maryland knocked off #2 Illinois, behind Juan Dixon's 25 points. Maryland has looked good since that season-opening loss to 'Zona. Chris Wilcox is a beast in the post for the Terps - he and Lonny Baxter could be a problem for Boozer when Duke comes to town.

Complimenting the Blue Devils...very untarheel!!!!!

Have you seen the SI College Basketball Issue? It gives each programs graduation rate........How do the Memphis Tigers have 0% rate........that must be a great recruiting tool.

Duke not only ranked #1 but also has the highest grad rate along with Virginia...........That's impressive.

Memphis Tigers...

Ha. I did see that. And ACC schools are routinely known for high grad rates...like Vince at UNC last year :) Don't get me started on that one. As for Duke's grad rate, well, they've always had some brainy-acts out there. Grant Hill was extremely intelligent, and Shane Battier had all kinds of academic honors last season. I know there's more, I'm just too lazy to research.

As for Memphis...Calipari's recruiting process isn't going to help that 0% either. Dajuan Wagner will barely be around after basketball season, basically telling everyone he's a 1-year guy and out. Calip also goes after JuCo guys, who aren't exactly the most amazing students alive, so that aint going to help the grad rate either.

As for the Duke props....what can I say? They look amazing. And the Heels don't. And I think Mike Dunleavy could be my next big white donkey project.

-Sensei.
