El Dukies....

Just finished watching the first five minutes of the Duke-Michigan game and have come to the conclusion that Duke will not lose a single game this season and will win the NCAA title, hands down. They just racked up 29 points and a 25-point lead in just over five minutes of action. And we're not talking Austin Peay or McNeese State here people....this is Michigan, Fab 5 Michigan, NCAA Champs Michigan, you know....and Duke is handing them their asses on a platter. Tough.

Duhon, Jones and Williams - best three-guard backcourt in NCAA history?

Hyperbole rules,

Lots of upsets this week, including Duke dropping a 78-77 squeaker to Florida State. Over the last 2 days, no less than SIX ranked teams have fallen and there are NO undefeated teams left. Kentucky lost tonight to go to 0 - 2 in conference play. North CArolina was pounded tonight for the second straight game. Maryland 112 NC 78
Wake Forest 84 NC 62 (in Chapel Hill)......

All you Tar Heel fans are VERY quiet. For good reason, apparently. By the way, I am a Texas Tech fan, because of the General. He is college basketball's Mike Keenan......

Indiana seem to be doing well without Coach Knight. They put a licking on Number 12 Iowa today in Iowa.......

Duke is still number one despite its' loss.

There are a lot of good games coming up in the next couple of weeks with the conferences being in full swing now. Watch out for Texas as a sleeper. Texas lost one of its' top players, 6'7" Chris Owens, but have gone undefeated since and against some pretty good competition. 3 of its' 4 losses have come against ranked teams Gonzaga, Indiana, and Arizona, with a 4th loss on the road against Utah, who is always tough at home.......

They have beaten #6 Oklahoma State and #11 Stanford. This schedule will bode well for an invitation to the big dance......

Texas always has great athletes on its' basketball teams. It should be interesting....

I like this team. Drew Gooden and Nick Collison are legit All-Americans, but that loss to UCLA showed me that despite having some tremendous talent and sharp basketball minds on the floor, the Jayhawks don't have the athleticism to match with certain teams.

Iowa-Illinois should be a good game. In the backcourt, you have Luke Recker and Ryan Hogan attempting to contain Frank Williams. Up front, which one of the Illini big men will handle Reggie Evans, the master of the Hawkeye double-double?

That pic of Jeffries you posted is great. I really like Jeffries and see him as a Tayshaun Prince-like talent, with less outside game but a better post presence. And, as evidence with the pic, he can finish hard.

Remember when this used to be a rivalry?

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- Kris Lang didn't look at the scoreboard during the game and didn't even know what the final score was. The North Carolina senior just knew it was bad, real bad.

"I'm kind of speechless right now," Lang said after an 87-58 loss to No. 1 Duke on Thursday night. "I'm sorry I can't come up with any better words."

There had been little evidence North Carolina could compete with the top-ranked Blue Devils this season. And Duke went out and proved the obvious as Mike Dunleavy scored 23 points and Jason Williams added 18 in the most lopsided game in the series since 1964.

"When I was being recruited by both of these schools I felt that either place I went all the games would be close, they all would be battles," said Dunleavy, who was 10-for-15 from the field. "To win in the fashion we did I was a little surprised."

Duke (19-1, 7-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat North Carolina by 14 points in the Smith Center in the 2001 regular-season finale, then bounced the Tar Heels by 26 in the ACC tournament title game.

It was more of the same this time as the Blue Devils became the first team to win four straight in the 16-year history of the Smith Center.

Mike Krzyzewski took out his starters with three minutes left and his club up by 35 points.

Brian Morrison led North Carolina, which matched a season-high with 25 turnovers, with 12 points.

"You have to credit Duke for the fact that they anticipated the passing lanes," Lang said. "They knew our offense -- and they are long and quick."

Duke and Maryland have a two-game lead over North Carolina State and Wake Forest at the halfway mark of the ACC season. The Blue Devils and Terrapins meet for a second time Feb. 17 in College Park. Md., in what will likely decide the regular-season crown.

The loss dropped North Carolina (6-12, 2-6) to 1-7 in January. The last time the program lost that many in the month was in 1951.

"The toughest thing now is we've got to move on," North Carolina coach Matt Doherty said. "We really have to put this game behind us."

Unlike in past years when both teams were ranked high in the polls, there was little buildup and interest in this one. Tickets were going for face value prior to the tipoff of what is usually one of college basketball's most anticipated games.

Duke, which has won seven straight since a one-point loss to Florida State on Jan. 6, shot 61 percent in the first half and committed just two turnovers to go up by double digits.

The Blue Devils then went on a 10-2 run to start the second half as Carlos Boozer had a layup and turnaround jumper, and Dunleavy made a 3-pointer and a layup to go up 58-37 and the rout was on.

A 3-pointer by Williams with 7:57 left gave Duke a 31-point lead as North Carolina managed just 12 points in the first 15 minutes of second half.

"In the second half our defense was great," Krzyzewski said. "It wasn't good, it was great."

"In the first half we left a few guys open because maybe we were too worried about (Jason) Capel and Lang," Dunleavy said. "We learned to make sure we stayed with our man, help out when we needed to, and to respect everyone."

Doherty called a 30-second timeout with 5:28 left and yelled at his team to pick up the pace and compete harder as the Tar Heels tried to avoid more embarrassment and the worst loss in the 210-game series.

Duke's largest win in the series was 35 points in February 1964.

"I told our kids at the four-minute timeout, 'You know what, both of these programs have had amazing traditions and we should feel fortunate that we won this game, but just remember where you're at,'" Krzyzewski said. "This is a place that has produced amazing basketball for the last four decades and it will continue to do that. We'll always respect that."

The Tar Heels shot 58 percent in the first half, but fell behind by as many as 15 points as eight players accounted for 14 turnovers. North Carolina also let Duke get nine easy baskets on either layups or dunks.

Duke got off to a slow start offensively, but the Tar Heels threw away any chance of capitalizing with 11 turnovers in the opening 10:09.

North Carolina was within eight before the Blue Devils scored on their final eight possessions of the half. Williams, quiet much of the period, was the key over the final 4:13, getting two driving layups and a 12-footer for a 48-35 halftime lead.
____________________________________________________

I'll wait for the Sandman to chirp in. This is bloody embarassing. And the Captain said college ball was less frustrating....sure 'aint for coach Doherty and the Heels. This is a disgrace to Tar Heels basketball.

I couldn't agree more, kind of......

I know what you're saying, Sensei. This rivalry used to mean that the underdog would cover the spread. Now, even with a 17 point cushion, NC couldn't pull it out for one of my bets. I guess it is okay, as long as teams like Detroit, Youngstown State, Tennessee Tech, Nevada, and Virginia Military, keep coming through for me.....:)

I am following a few teams in the west carefully......Pepperdine and Tulsa might be able to pull first round upsets this year. They are both very athletic and love to run and gun. I know tough defense is critical in the big dance, but these guys will be fun to watch.......

UCLA were clubbed by 30 at Oregon tonight......Arizona were actually 5 point underdogs at California and beat them outright 67 - 57. UCLA's youth is really starting to show now......

Finally, Alabama are putting up some impressive results lately and will be a team to reckon with in the big dance.....

Team's Ive noticed...

1) Texas Tech. Yeah, Bobby Knight is back. These guys went 9-19 a year ago, returned about 5 guys and had basically nobody come in as freshmen. Wow. Shows what a little coaching can do. Knight's got them at 15-4 and pretty much a guaranteed berth come March.

2) Utah. Haha, can't not mention the Utes. Majerus has them on a 12-game winning streak without the services of ex-Duke transfer Chris Burgess. Yeah, they play in a crap conference with a bunch of mormons launching threes, but they're gonna crack the top 25 soon. Nice.

I like 'Zona, but they're too green and far too inexperienced to make any noise come March. Love Will Byum though. He's a gamer. And Luke Walton looks like a beefier, post-based Mike Dunleavy Jr. at times...but the real story is Jason Gardner, the poster-boy for removing your name from the NBA draft.

UCLA is an enigma, wrapped in a riddle, smothered in secret sauce. They win big games, lose brutal games, win bigger games (Kansas) lose by big margins to beatable teams (Oregon). They've got tons of talent. Kapono, Barnes, Gadzuric, Bozeman, Cummings, Young....the list goes on. They could put a lot of guys in the NBA...but can't win games consistently at the NCAA level. Odd. I still think Lavin had underachieved since he started there. Harrick was the guy they had, and is now the guy they need.

WTF?

UCLA is an enigma, wrapped in a riddle, smothered in secret sauce

You have obviously been talking a little too much to Screw You Captain.......

Good stuff, Sensei. Texas Tech can't win on the road though. They have been blown out a couple of times, once last night to a poor Nebraska team. They ended up losing by 11 but were down by 32 at one point. They are 15 - 4 because of a diabolically poor schedule. They did beat a good Oklahoma at home by 13 but were blown out by 27 on the road against the same team... Don't get me wrong. I love following Bobby Knight and I am glad he has put some life into a program that obviously needed it......

I wouldn't get too excited yet about the Red Raiders, since they have a lot of tough games left against Texas, Kansas, and Oklahoma State on the road. Don't expect them to win any of these games and they will finish with 9 losses approximately....They will be a bubble team.

As for Pepperdine/Gonzaga, it will be a battle for the tourney spot. Pepperdine has already beat Gonzaga by 9, limiting Dickau to 15 points and a Big Country Reeves' breakfast, EIGHT turnovers........

You've gotta love college hoops, and basketball.....

In the West Coast Conference final, Gonzaga beat my favorite new team, Pepperdine by about a dozen(it's not over yet). Dickau, after scoring a measly 2 points in the first half, scored 27 in the second half, making 8 shots in a row at one point.

Gonzaga will get the automatic birth and a probable number 2 seed, or even perhaps a number 1 seed(I can't see this happening). Pepperdine will be a bubble team, that will definitely be NIT bound if it doesn't make it to the big dance.........

You've gotta' love college hoops..........

Police said Little, a 23-year-old junior, taped Justin Hodge of Oberlin, Ohio, to a chair on Monday, beat him on the head with a whiskey bottle, dropped a barbell on his face, punched, kicked and burned him.

Hodge also told police that Little urged his friends to drive him to Columbus, Ohio, and have him killed there.

Judge Nadine Allen of the Hamilton County Municipal Court set Little's bond at $50,000 on the felonious assault and kidnapping charges pending further court appearances
