CMF 6 - VUFC 1

We got our ass handed to us. Wasn't even close. No effort on our part. We were down early and there was no response to some early goals. Still trying to figure out our system and new faces - and last night it showed.

Too true. It was 5-0 at half time. CMF with smart runs and our guys didn't pick up. To their credit, CMF looked very good and sharp. Good luck at westerns.

Surprisingly, Winterpeg isn't really that bad at that time of year - cold but pitches not frozen and no snow (at least when Nationals were there back in '95)

Yeah but that was before the Cryonegian glaciation era.

Ok maybe not snow or rock hard pitches but the wind chill was in place for us in 2007 and it was WAY colder than here at Thanksgiving...

This week, all games Friday:

Croatia vs VUFC. Croatia are notoriously slow starters and VUFC is full of the desire and hope of a newly promoted team. That keeps it close, but skill and guile overcome effort and unfulfilled aspiration.

West Van vs Westside. Two old rivals and former Western Canadian Champs lock horns at Ambleside. Home field gives West Van the edge here.

VUFC 3 - 2 Croatia

Got our first win of the year in dramatic fashion. Croatia had more possession in the first half and we worked off of the counter. We wasted 3 goal scoring chances that seemed to be easier to score than miss and Croatia made us pay by intercepted a clearance and scoring off of a rebound to go into the break up 1-0.

More of the same in terms of possession in the second. We tie up the game on a header and our spirits were lifted. They hit the post and force our keeper to make a couple brilliant stops. And their pressure paid off as they took the lead on a PK. They then had a defender given a red card(two yellows I believe) and the game changed from there. We pressed for the next 20mins and scored a couple for the W! Our winner was a nicely hit first time shot from the edge of the box that the keeper could only parry over and in to the net...but he makes that save 9 out of 10 times usually. A little fortunate but we'll take it

Looks like Croatia and Westside are both having their usual slow starts to the year.

Our centre d-man said he saw green between ball and goal line on the playing side of the goal line. Wasn't even close to going in but ref decided to call it a goal... after 5 seconds. Our centre defender had time to get control of the ball, turn and pass it to the outside at which time the ref then brought the whistle to his mouth and blew it, pointing to the centre circle. And the ref was standing about 10 yards from centre when he decided to make the call as well. Unbelievable. That said, WV did hit 2 other crossbars/posts so the result could have been much different anyway.

Last night was a clear example of a game that the referee just had no business reffing. He missed fouls on both ends of the pitch and just couldn't keep up with the play. He then berates both sidelines for complaining about fouls whereas I'm pretty sure he knew he was missing the plot himself.
