Champions League

Mighty Glasgow Rangers 3 (6) Maribor 1 (1)

The Teddy Bears off to a good start. Caniggia with another 2 goals, looks like he might be one of our best signings in recent years.......which was on a free. I guess that makes up for the litany of multi-million dollars bell-ends who have been tossed in the scrap heap.

More good news, Michael Ball (Everton) looks like he is on his way to Ibrox for 7milGBP. Looks like a good prospect and can help pave the way for the exit of diddies extraordinaire Amorouso and Konterman. C****c, in trying to keep up with the Jones', have announced the signing of Steve Guppy. Oh no, I am shitting the sheets now.

EEEEEEZZZZZZZYYYYYYY

Classy Celtic too good for Ajax

AMSTERDAM, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Celtic produced a polished performance to beat Ajax Amsterdam 3-1 in the first leg of their Champions League third round qualifying tie on Wednesday.

Bobby Petta put the Scottish champions ahead just seven minutes into the game when Ajax goalkeeper Fred Grim came off his line to punch clear a cross. The ball fell into the path of the Celtic midfielder, who chipped the Ajax captain from the edge of the penalty area as he tried to scramble back.

Didier Agathe scored Celtic's second 13 minutes later when Swedish striker Henrik Larsson put him clear on the flank, the winger outpacing his marker before firing the ball into the corner of the net.

The Dutch side hit back five minutes before the break. A shot by Greek striker Nikos Machlas was blocked by Celtic goalkeeper Robert Douglas, only for Georgian Shota Arveladze to stab the ball home from close range.

Celtic restored their two-goal lead 10 minutes into the second half, Chris Sutton scoring with a powerful header from Agathe's cross

Thanks, Bucky. Unfortunately, I can't offer congratulations but then again Rangers held the Turkish champions to a draw at home. :)

Glory, glory Glasgow Celtic

Ajax appeared to be too young and inexperienced. They had a few chances but looked very lethargic throughout....

Isn't it ironic?

Imagine going to a team's field and having the ref go against you. That has never happened at Ibrox before.......

Poor Artur Numan. Apparently, he had to be escorted off the field a couple of years back when he was good enough to play for Holland. The Turks don't like him for whatever reason. That is unfortunate.

Numan fears Turks despite appointment of top referee
By Peter Jardine in Istanbul

Captain Arthur Numan has warned Rangers to expect Fenerbahce's con men to plumb new depths here on Wednesday - despite the appointment of the best referee in the world for the £10million Champions League roulette fixture.
Italian official Pierluigi Collina will take charge in the Sukru Saracoglu stadium as a clear indication that UEFA regard the fixture as worthy of their top trouble-shooting official.

But Numan still expects Turkish tactics to be even more underhand than in the goalless first leg at Ibrox when Michael Mols was red-carded after an unseemly incident with Ghanaian Samuel Johnson, who grabbed the striker in the groin.

A suspension for Mols has opened the door for a place in a 19-strong travelling party for Billy Dodds, Kenny Miller, Allan Johnston and young defender Maurice Ross, with Argentinian striker Claudio Caniggia surprisingly beating injury to make the journey as well. Neil McCann, however, was ruled out and his inactivity must concern Scotland.

Caniggia hasn't featured since the Fenerbahce first leg after suffering a rib injury but he could yet partner Tore Andre Flo in Istanbul.

Numan, who required protection from riot shield-wielding bodyguards while here with Holland some years ago, expects the on-field dirty tricks to surpass events in Glasgow.

'We need the referee to be very strong - I hope he knows the situation when you go to Turkey,' said Numan, with Collina taking charge just as did when Rangers visited Galatasaray last year.

'He was in charge in Istanbul and did well but they will do everything or anything to get a result. I think they will try whatever method to get us a yellow or red card. We must be patient and somehow hope to control the tempo.

'Fenerbahce will be worse here even than at Ibrox. They will try anything and will try to influence the referee and linesmen so the officials must be very strong.'

Rangers remain angry at the suspension for Mols, who clashed with Samuel Johnson at Ibrox, with referee Urs Meier only showing Fenerbahce goalkeeper Recber Rustu a yellow card.

'The referee or the linesman saw what happened but the keeper should have been sent off as well. It's a pity he is suspended but we have other people who can create something for us.'

Johnson, who grabbed Mols in the groin at Ibrox, is doubtful for the return after suffering a head injury against Istanbulspor on Sunday night which later required hospital checks.

Keeper Rustu also missed the 1-0 defeat by Istanbulspor with a shoulder problem but coach Mustafa Denizli is confident he will be fit.

Glory Glory Glasgow Celtic

Apparently Ajax played a much better game by all accounts. However, they were destroyed in Holland and the better team is moving on. Bring on the !5 million pound and a decent seeding.

As for Rangers, it is too bad that they missed out on a 10 million pound payout. They appear to be spending a lot of money lately with no results......Another failure in Europe. It really is too bad.......:D

Tough break, Bucky, and the rest of the Rangers fans on TTP. You still have a chance at some domestic stuff this year, if Celtic feel like giving it up.

The Big Boys

Now it is time for the 'real' teams of Europe to battle it out. That doesn't include weak teams like Rangers, Ajax, Parma and so on.
Here are the groups. At first glance, the Big Arse have a nice draw to see them through as does United. Liverpool are going to have a very difficult time by a very good Dortmund team and Kiev is always tough to play, especially in the Ukraine.

Despite the fact I support Celtic, I really like their chances to get through since the top 2 make it. They will be tough games but I don't Juventus will be as good as they have been the last couple of years. Rosenborg are a stiffling type of team and Porto will be very skillful. I am really looking forward to this.......

rubbish

All UEFA sanctioned games to have been played this week have been cancelled 'as a mark of respect to the families of the victims of the American tragedy'. What does football have to do with it? I appreciate the sentiment but really, football has nothing to do with terrorism. Vinnie Jones is in Hollywood now for fcuk's sake.

This weekend's Premiership games will go on as scheduled.

Champs League postponements/The Arse

Fair play postponing the games. What happened yesterday is enormous for the world, let alone the US. I hope they find the cnuts and exterminate them! Period.

Nice to see that The Arse managed to play their first Champs League game against that Spanish powerhouse, Mallorca. Especially since they lost! On Rsol' ECL debut.

Smashing stuff indeed!

Would that make you happy? Extermination? More killing? What about a fairly conducted trial with appropriate evidence to support any claims? Innocent until proven guilty and all that..... is this what happens when 'civilisation' is attacked? Extermination is very civilised, of course.

Besides, all UEFA was trying to do was misguidedly demonstrate a mark of respect for those murdered. 'Exterminating' them because of a few cancelled fixtures is excessive to say the least.

Brutal Call

The I-tie team will take the victory anytime, but the PK call with 2 min. to go was absolutely brutal!

Celtic had a great comeback, but if you saw the entire game, it really should never had come to 2 PKs in the final 5 minutes.

But, again, what a brutal PK call to cost Celtic the match.......Juventus mystic lives on!
