Rovers take title with win over Athletic Club

The Sapperton Rovers senior men’s team captured the league championship by defeating Athletic Club of BC 4-2 Wednesday evening at Byrne Creek Oval.

It was a come-from-behind victory for the Rovers, who claimed their second Knight trophy with the first one coming in 1994, the first year it was presented.

The Rovers scored three goals in the final 15 minutes to get the win. Sapperton’s Jason Pierotti had opened the scoring in the first half. Athletic Club got two quick goals in the second half to take a 2-1 lead.

But in the 75th minute, Danny Caraiman tied the game and five minutes later Reyhan Ismal finished off a three-way passing play with Ted Ullrich and Andrew Celenza to take the lead. Rob Sing finished the scoring with two minutes left.
