Montreal 1

Well, that game just on Fox Sports World was, erm, interesting

Can you say "put your head down and hoof it up the park"?

Can you say "non-exsistent midfield"?

Can you say "bad way to showcase your team across the continent"?

Gutted by the loss,

~Regs.

I agree Regs! The Whitecaps had nothing going for them and I mean nothing. I thought Nico Caverro played well for the most part in the back but the Caps played alot of long ball and they seemed very slow compared to Montreal. That's 2 losses in a row!

Corazzin scores winner as Whitecaps beat Storm

CALGARY (CP) - Carlo Corazzin scored the game-winning goal to help the Vancouver Whitecaps beat the Calgary Storm 1-0 in A-League soccer action on Monday.
Calgary's Zuniga Nicolas Zuniga opened scoring at the 21st minute.

Whitecaps' Jason Jordan ties the game when Naill Thompson feeds him a pass at the 81st minute.

Just two minutes later, John Sulentic set up Corazzin to give the Whitecaps the victory.

Vancouver improved to 13-6-5 this season, while Calgary dropped to 4-17-3.

Trust Niall to involve himself in something so complicated as a 1-0 win in which three goals were scored.

Live to see another 30 minutes (more or less)

90' - Whitecaps - Dave Morris scores in the 90th minute to bring the Whitecaps back to life.
02' - Seattle - Seattle stuns the Whitecaps with an early goal in just the second minute.
In overtime.

Oh What a Night at Swangard

Sat in the VIP section with Notty, Sarge and many others on a fantastic night in burnaby. Johan Hedburg was there to help with the kick-off, then he hanged with the boys in the garden for the rest of the night. The Moose is a great guy, I wish him the best in Vancouver, the guy sat with us, talked soccer and hockey, let us have a pinch of Swedish chew. If Can the Man does not get the job done this year, then I hope Johan gets a chance because he is quality.

As for the game, the WhiteCaps finishing was terrible, how many times do you shot over the bar, Kindel with 2, Nial with 2, Corrazin with 2 and Morris with 1, Dave did score the tying goal in injury time. Full marks to Seattle, they defended like madd men all game, and I think deserved the result. Tough luck to Clarky who had his PK saved, it was bound to happen some time, all the shoters scored until Jeff.

Great night at Swangard, until next year.
The pints were $2, and I did have at least 6.

Did anyone see the little tidbit in the Vancouver Sun on Saturday about 2 Whitecap employees being let go?

Lennard Bobbaduzzi was quoted as saying something about the way the company is growing at such a fast rate was the reason. So you let people go that have helped for so long?

I think Peter may have some inside scoop on this [as well as a recently registered TTPer that was one of the canned former employees].

Cheers,

~Regs.

VANCOUVER -- The Vancouver Whitecaps chose SFU forward Kevin Crouch, NAIA Region 1 player of the year, with the 12th pick of the A-League college soccer draft Wednesday.

Crouch lead the Clan in scoring with 12 goals and six assists.

UBC defender Aaron Richer was the first local product to go in the draft, chosen third overall by Calgary. Richer, a Vancouver native named CIS player of the year last year, scored three goals in 2003 and played every minute of the Thunderbird season.

The Whitecaps went with University of Victoria goalkeeper Jordan Robinson in the second round.

this slipped quietly under the radar...unless i missed a post on the subject.
would have been nice to have him around for provincials, but congrats to richer on being drafted...condolences with respect to the team that drafted him though.

WHITECAPS ANNOUNCE DATES OF 2004 MEN’S PLAYER COMBINE

……Open Tryouts for Men’s team to be held March 1st – 3rd

Vancouver, BC - Whitecaps FC Director of Soccer Operations Bob Lenarduzzi, announced today that the club will hold a “Men’s Player Combine” to kick-off the 2004 season.

The Combine is an open tryout for aspiring and current professional players that will take place on March 1, 2, and 3 from 1:00pm to 3:30 pm at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex.

Whitecaps head coach Tony Fonseca is looking forward to identifying both local and foreign talent at the tryout. “Part of my role as Head Coach of the Whitecaps Men’s team and the club development program is identifying and developing players who are able to take that step to the pro team level,” says Fonseca.

In 1987, the Whitecaps, known then as the Vancouver 86ers, held an open trial and took a chance on a young Fijian prospect named Ivor Evans. The “Fiji Flash” as he became known, went on to become a crowd favourite and one of the club’s most dominant players.

“We are very excited this season about the direction and growth of the club”, says Bob Lenarduzzi. “The purpose of this open tryout is to facilitate the overwhelming number of inquiries and requests we’ve received from players with pro potential on a local and international level. We’ve attracted attention from players throughout Europe, South America and Africa who have expressed a strong interest in playing in Vancouver.”

When March 1, 2, 3 from 1:00pm to 3:30pm.

Where Burnaby Lake Sports Complex.

Fee:* $75.00 per player (Cdn). Players are responsible for their own expenses. For non-resident players requiring accommodations, the club is providing a special rate of $69.00 a night plus tax at its official partner hotel, the Burnaby Accent Inn. Contact Mike Anastasi at: (604) 473-5000.
Staff Players attending the trials will be assessed by the Whitecaps Men’s Head Coach Tony Fonseca.

Footwear The surface is field turf. Bring moulded cleats and running shoes.

Format Game situations.

Selection Players will be guaranteed at least two sessions as part of their registration fee. Some players may be released after the Tuesday session.

Registration:

Registrations will only be accepted on-line via the club website.

Combine Timeline:
Feb. 21st Application deadline.
Feb. 25th Combine fees due.
March 1st Combine begins.

$75.00 to train with a bunch of hacks for two days, and then get cut. Seems like a pretty smart investment. I can see it now:

"Doug, we really liked your hustle and intensity out there. Unfortunately, your $75 cheque bounced and you still owe room and tax charges at the roach motel we made you pay for. Even though we'd like to keep you around, it just wouldn't be fair to the guy who showed up in Chuck Taylors with a bag of 1500 nickles. I'm afraid we're going to have to let you go. We're trying to run a professional soccer club here."

never mind the fact they have scheduled the open tryouts at the exact time that the majority of "local soccer talent" are scheduled to play league games...i've got a tough decision to make.

You play your league games on a Monday afternoon???

I think we sould wait to see what actually comes from these tryouts before we hack them. There may actually be some desire by the staff to see "who else" is out there, you know players they usually might not or can't look at but are still quite capable...you know like one or two from the valley! ;)

Cash grab it may be but don't you think there are better ways that da management can get their hands on a few thousand dollars that would be less public. $75 seems like just enough to ensure that those trying out are actually serious about trying out so that they don't get every Tom, Dick and Cnut out to be seen.
