Well I guess maybe half of Serie A and La Liga may up and fly into Vancouver for this one, all expenses paid of course by the upstanding promoter. If that occurs, then it will be a walk for the visitors.

If not, who knows.

Not sure if this has been posted but very interesting development...

Zidane doubtful for Vancouver kickaround
CBC Radio One Vancouver is reporting that Zinedine Zidane has injured his back while lifting his child in his Vancouver hotel and may not be able to keep his commitment to play at BC Place on Saturday.

Clearly, ZZ got wind of the Vancouver lineup and caught a case of the "clarkey flu" :knvb:

What a mess

does he have an obese kid?

Apparently he was spotted at Robson Cycles yesterday getting bikes for himself and his kids to ride around Stanley Park. Not sure if this was before or after the "lift."

The telling shot will be if he makes it to the promised kickaround with eastside kids tomorrow at Britannia.

The game is off now.

As of July 1st, the FVSL/VMSL had stepped up to cover some of the expenses for our players because they didn't want to pay for referees, parking, game balls, warm up kit etc.

Apparently they (tour promoters) announced yesterday that there were no NAME players other than Zidane coming and the players were pissed but were going to go ahead with the game.

So much for that.

What a load of crap... the local squad has been training up to 4 times a week for this. I feel for them.... at least they're fitter for it in the end.

Just re-reading this...who is "they"? They being the promoters?

Who was going to be the local's coach?

Doesn't matter. A disgrace though (not on the part of the local people), but hopefully this is a lesson learned.

What a crock of sh**...what happens for refunds?!

Oh well, McDonald's Willingdon is REALLY nice, they have TVs and everything! Also, it's head office so you KNOW they don't spit in the burgers when you make a special order!

Sure it is.

My point being, the locals should not have had to cover one penny of their expenses to play in this thing.

We (FVSL/VMSL) are still supporting this event for now as they have managed to reschedule to Swangard on the 12th, depends on the players patience at this point as they have put in a terrific commitment training for this game. Proposed mtg with Zizou Friday evening to discuss. I wanted to POST publicly to avoid the obvious pisstake that will ensue if cancelled. If he is genuinely injured and will meet Friday then maybe it's a go. We are also trying to get a game against Whitecaps Residency and/or Victoria Highlanders in preperation for the 12th:cool:

Zidane's Vancouver charity match in doubt after freak injury
By THE CANADIAN PRESS – 4 hours ago

VANCOUVER, B.C. — Zinedine Zidane's charity soccer match Saturday in Vancouver is in danger of being cancelled after the former French star suffered a freak injury.

Nick Smith, a spokesman for the game organizers, said Zidane injured his back while bending down to pick up his child Wednesday night as he was watching Vancouver's Canada Day fireworks display.

Organizers expect to make a decision on the game's status Friday. Smith said Zidane's chances of playing are "50-50."

"Fingers crossed is all I can say at the moment," said Smith about the game's chances of going ahead.

The game at B.C. Place is the finale in the three-game "Friends of Zidane" tour that has already staged events in Toronto and Montreal.

The former FIFA World Player of the Year underwent physiotherapy Thursday, but may have pulled a tendon in his back and recovery usually takes a week.

The games pit Zidane and other current and retired international soccer stars against local select sides with proceeds going to UNICEF and other causes.

Zidane, 37, helped France win the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000. The smooth-passing midfielder guided France to the 2006 World Cup final against Italy, but was sent off for head-butting Italian defender Marco Materazzi.

He later said Materazzi had insulted him.

Zidane, who won the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player, retired after that game.

Very Interesting..... Refund Please....

Zidane and Friends postponed to July 12

Retired soccer superstar tweaks back on Canada Day

By BOB MACKIN, 24 HOURS

Zinedane Zidane's Zidane and Friends event at B.C. Place Stadium on Saturday has been rescheduled for July 12 thanks to an injury. (FILE PHOTO)
Three years ago Zinedine Zidane's head got him in trouble.

The retired French soccer superstar is in Vancouver and this time it's his back.

Saturday night's B.C. Place Stadium exhibition match billed as Zidane and Friends will be rescheduled for July 12, promoter Ahcene Adlani told 24 hours. Zidane injured his back while picking up his three-year-old daughter during Canada Day fireworks.

"We rushed him to the physiotherapist after midnight," Adlani said. "This kind of injury takes at least four or five days."

Zidane led France to its 1998 World Cup triumph in Paris. In the 2006 final, he was ejected after head-butting Italy's Marco Materazzi for an apparent insult. Italy took the championship on penalty kicks.

Adlani said around 8,000 tickets were sold for the match in the 59,000-seat dome. He said the July 12 match will happen at either B.C. Place or Burnaby's Swangard Stadium, home of the Vancouver Whitecaps. Information about refunds for those who cannot attend the new date will be forthcoming, he said.

Adlani said Zidane is still scheduled to attend a soccer clinic at Britannia School in Vancouver on Friday morning. A banquet planned for the Italian Cultural Centre was canceled.

Adlani, who runs a Vancouver soccer academy, is self-promoting Zidane's Canadian tour, which had stops in Toronto and Montreal.
Another article talking about postponing game to the 12th....
